A word from Maenam
Simplicity, innovation and balance are the key ingredients in chef Angus An’s philosophy behind the authentic Thai dishes served at Maenam. His menu is rooted in balancing intense fresh flavours with seasonal ingredients and locally sourced products, while respecting the tradition and the origin of each recipe. With inspiration found in continuous travel, the menu at Maenam is ever-changing but always served with Thai flare and enjoyed in its traditional context, be it family style dining or riffs on Thai street food.

Cellaring one of the most exciting Riesling collections in Vancouver, the wine list at Maenam is a food focused undertaking and concentrates on lighter reds and a spectrum of aromatic whites. The wine, beer and cocktail list evolves as quickly as chef An’s menu, spanning a range of old and new world styles, with a special focus on the best of British Columbia.

Diner Reviews
  • "Love almost everything about Maenam. Food, service, ambience, is fantastic. I'm a frequent diner out, and a long-time customer who spends a good dollar in this restaurant. A phone call in advance of my reservation telling me that I had to be finished dinner in 1-1/2 really put my girlfriend and I off. We almost canceled. Even though food comes quickly and we were told politely, telling a couple trying to enjoy a nice Saturday evening out they only have an hour and a half to do so, put the only bad taste of the night in my mouth! I understand the motivation for the call/policy, but might you expand this to 2 hours or address diners that are lingering, not eating or drinking, specifically?"

  • "Special occasion because prices don't make it affordable everyday. But you get what you pay for...very good quality refined thai cuisine."

  • "We have been take out customers for a while and decided to try the restaurant, were a bit worried about comments on poor service, haughty servers and such but found the opposite, friendly service, quick service and really great food. Try the fixed menu and get exposed to some dishes you would not normally order. Lots of great flavours and excellent presentations. We enjoyed ourselves."

  • "Brought an out-of-province friend here, for food that i felt recommended by William Gibson (the author). When the doors opened at noon, we were seated promptly, and served with a smile. It felt a bit under-staffed, but we had no complaints service-wise. Will visit again!"

  • "We ordered the 9 course Royal Thai Dinner after asking the server about it. He said that since it was our first time at Maenam, it would be the best way for us to experience the menu. As foodies, we were game to try almost anything the kitchen delivered to us. Overall, the food was good but not exceptional nor was it worth the money. We don't think any of the dishes were on the main menu...so we really did not experience the menu. Of the two main course meat (beef and pork ribs) dishes, the sauces for too similar and the beef was extremely fatty. To our surprise, desert was not included with the meal. The server seemed upset when we didn't order any desert and quickly brought us the bill. We would not recommend Maenam."

  • "Maenam is always a great spot. Servers are excellent and fish is so fresh. One of my first choices for lunch!!"

  • "Not your typical Thai restaurant. The food, wine selection, and service were all top notch."

  • "I always enjoy coming here for lunch. Because lunch is the only time they serve Stir fried beef with holy basil. This is easily my fave dish here and I cannot recommend it enough. I've had their curries and appetizers too which are also good. But it's this holy basil dish that takes top spot here. I can't wait to go back again!"

  • "I've dined at Maenam four times. The first and third times the food was uniformly excellent and unique. The second time, some of the dishes were very well done while others pretty well tasted alike and were uninspired. My last experience was that the food, with the exception of one dish, was mediocre. The "Chef's Menu" a prix fixe selection seemed randomly selected on that visit. Dishes were not paired or sequenced well. Most of the dishes could have used more vegetables."

  • "When we arrived at the restaurant they claimed emphatically that they did not have a reservation for us. This was a working lunch and it reflected poorly on me that they did not have our reservation. It will make me think twice about using Open Table again. "

  • "We had the 9 dish Royal Thai dinner for 3. Appies were fresh, original, flavourful and nicely presented. The chef seemed run out of ideas on the final course, with 2 near identical stir frys being served, but overall the food was excellent. Seating is tight, noise volume is high. Patrons mostly affluent westsiders, many on dates, generating an "in-crowd" happening vibe. Our waitress was pleasant but seemed distracted and messed up a couple of drink orders, but the rest of the food service team delivered the dishes with nicely paced efficiency. The wine list is adequate for this type of venue. We had a good time and will go back."

  • "Maenam is an amazing place. The food is delicious and they have some great wine to pair it with. We love doing the chefs dinner, because it means you don't have to think ahead about what you want to eat and a pro makes the decisions for you!"

  • "I appreciated having the opportunity to make a reservation on line. The number of items on the menu were a good amount. Overall it was a pleasant experience although somewhat difficult to hear over the noise. The food was served quite promptly and the staff were pleasant, although perhaps stretched a bit too thin. The soup was lovely with distinct flavours, the Green Papaya Salad was good but could have benefited from a bit stronger flavour. We were somewhat disappointed in the satay and the Pad Thai. However, overall, I think it's a pretty perfect fit for the Kits atmosphere. "

  • "This restaurant never disappoints. It is consistant in delivering top notch food quality. For three in our group it was their first experience. All three agreed this was their new favourite restaurant in the city. We highly recommend the Chef's Tasting menu. This restaurant's wine selection pairs perfectly with the food and they also have a really fun cocktail selection that are unusual and delicious! We give this not only best Thai food in the city; but definitely one of the top restaurants in the city. A true adventure for your pallet."

  • "After a trip to Thailand, where my wife and i attended cooking school, we were looking for what we hoped would be the best Thai restaurant in the area. I am pretty sure we found it. We have eaten at Maenam 3 times since our return and each time ordered the Chef's Menu which is a set menu decided by the chef. Each time the courses have been very different, and delicious. Our party doesn't drink alcohol, so I can not comment on that aspect of the restaurant. However I had the impression there was a nice wine and drink list. As far as the ambience and service, the atmosphere is very comfortable and the decor is modern. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. It will be one of our special occasion restaurants. "

  • "The restaurant offers several cocktails built around South East Asian ingredients... these were an enjoyable and unique experience. The Chef's Royal Thai dinner highlighted local, fresh seafood instead of more common/popular Thai dishes... this was also a great experience. My wife and I will return to this restaurant based on the strength of their razor clams, fried oyster and pig ear. "

  • "Unlike your typical or fave neighborhood thai restaurant with the good but predictable menu offerings Maenam offers freshest ingredients available in the westcoast but cooked and adapted to the best flavors of thailand. I have been here many times before sometimes ordering the tasting menu or sometimes ordering a la carte and it has always been delicious. We have even ventured to Longtail in New West which is a bit of a ways away and as expected a more casual but really tasty offering of a different genre of thai food. Leftovers or ordering an extra padthai to go home is always great even when having later. I would make reservations because the room is always full when I have gone."

  • "This is superb thai food, best I have ever had. I cook thai food frequently and I found the food simply addictive, inspiring me to try some new recipes! The special cocktails are thai themed and delicious. If you are looking for a quiet romantic spot this is a bit noisy but great for dinner with friends or family. "

  • "loved this restaurant so much after our first visit 2 weeks ago that we came back again. the first visit we ordered the chefs menu which was the most delicious thai food I have ever had. this visit we ordered the same but the waiter strongly encouraged us to try the more exotic preset menu(cant remember what it was called). We tried to be open to experimenting but it proved to be a little too advanced for us newbies. We just couldn't appreciate the sea urchin or the sweetbreads or the duck soup. I'm sure a seasoned thai food lover would have been more appreciative! Anyway we love the place and will be back- we'll just know to do our own thing!!"

  • "We arrived 1/2 earlier than our reservation and were happy to seat us. We requested to sit at a different table after we received our drinks and they were happy to do it too...excellent service! The food, cocktails and pairings were amazing...such good value for you $$. Great night and would go back in a second!"

  • "Good Thai food. My second visit - food was just as good as my first visit a few months ago. Fast efficient service. Very noisy the night I was there but the restaurant was full - a good sign! On the down side, I have never been told the time I must leave when the reservation was confirmed. Our allotted time was from 5:30 - 7. What's with that? We finished our meal in that time but I would have enjoyed lingering over an after dinner drink, a coffee, or a dessert. An hour and a half is not a long time for a dinner and we did not feel much like having dessert or coffee knowing that the clock was ticking and our server definitely gave us the impression that our "time was up". Maybe it is more relaxing if you go later in the evening."

  • "I have been here several times and usually come away very happy with the food and service. This time, the food was not quite as good, and the service was terrible. The server forgot to take our drink orders, so we ordered them ourselves. Then the food came before the drinks, which is not ideal. We ordered the chef's selection, but specified no peanuts, as one of our party had a peanut allergy. Sure enough, two of the dishes came with peanuts. And when the server asked if we were done, and we said yes, she turned around and proceeded to ignore us for about 15 minutes until we finally flagged her down and told her to remove our food and give us the check. Also, I wish the 'pescatarian' chef's menu had included at least one vegetable dish."

  • "We took our parents there for the first time and they totally loved it! Considering how well traveled and hard to please they could be, it was huge to hear them saying it's the best thai food they ever had!! It was our second time to the restaurant and so glad it's as great as we remembered from few years ago. Well done, Maenam!"

  • "I enjoyed our dinner at Maenam on Saturday night. The food and service were great. It was nice to have a little extra elbow room at the table and sit in comfy upholstered bench seats. It made for a relaxing and enjoyable dinner experience."

  • "Some dishes were great, like the confit duck salad, the other dishes were just avarage, but with a salty price for what it offers. Definately not good for kids, but great environment for adults."

  • "First off...the food was great.....but do not bring families or kids here.....we knew going in that it was a modern thai place vibrant n noisy....but they made no effort to accommodate us with a toddler n the server was horrible...he had no interest in us as a family....I'm thai and was not impressed by the decor or atmosphere ....food was good however."

  • "A second visit with friends from Denmark was just as special as the first. The smaller chef's menu gave us the opportunity to taste many delicious courses without having to fret about making good choices on food we knew little about. The mussels are outstanding - we had them presented in two ways but I still love them best in the coconut curry sauce. We also took the wine pairing option and enjoyed three BC wines well chosen to complement the variety of the food. Our server was very professional and helpful when introducing the dishes for us, easily answering our questions. The room was less crowded this time and consequently not quite so noisy but that is one of the challenges of such a popular restaurant."

  • "Great place. Food was good but a little too salty. Service was the most interesting part. The gentleman that served us was very quirky and a little scattered but seemed he seemed to be serving the entire room so maybe this was why. I think I will give this place another try as the first time I dined here I was blown away by the food, this time I would say the food was just good."

  • "Green Papaya Salad to wake up our taste buds on a rainy night. Perfect roti and stir fried long aubergine to dip in the green curry of halibut and aromatic curry of free range Fraser Valley chicken. The most delicious burst of flavours we have had in a long time at a Thai restaurant. Accompanied by a Joie Gewurtztraminer. For take-away we brought back some Tom-Kaa, Coconut Mushroom Soup, for our daughter and she loved it. Very good take-away menu."

  • "Excellent food, so elegant, inventive and tasty. For someone who can't eat any dairy products this place is a dream. It is also very healthy. The only down side was the feeling that my party and I were being pushed out after our meal. I understand that Maeman has strict rules on the length of time you are able to enjoy your meal (for a party of two-1 1/2 hours and party of three 2 hours) BUT I noticed that there were several tables in the restaurant that were not occupied, so there was no need to be curt about whether we were going to eat dessert."

  • "Maenam is now one of my 'once a week' places! The crispy pork belly, halibut green curry, sable fish soup and mushroom salad are some of my top picks. Every dish is perfect every time I have had them (all of them more than once). The bartender, James, is one of the best in Vancouver. Excellent at his craft. I have tried many of the signature cocktails and would highly recommend them."

  • "I am from out of town visiting and heard about this place from a local. I couldn't have been happier with the suggestion! The food was light, fresh and aeromatic. Not your traditional American Thai food at all. Would definitely go again when I come back to Vancouver."
