Diner Reviews
  • "Lunch at Madison Bistro is always a fantastic choice. Great food, excellent service and nice ambiance."

  • "The bread is amazing at this restaurant. The bar scene is vibrant and a bit loud at times, but not overwhelming. My food tasted great and was cooked perfectly. I ordered the filet with frites. I'm a steak guy and I know it was not a filet. It was more of thin cut NY strip. Overall, it was still fine, but not what I expected. The pear desert was one of the best deserts I had in NY. The French onion soup was very good too for a cold day. The price of the meal was reasonable (pre-fix $45 (3-course)), but the house wine is pricey for what was provided."

  • "We were coming from seeing a concert nearby - Mariachi Flor de Toloache - and craved French Food. Did our Open Table homework, and came up with Madison Bistro as being the best rated and most convenient. We were not disappointed. Both of us had the Prix Fixe dinner, both of us enjoyed our dinner, and both of us left stuffed - and satisfied."

  • "Claude Godard a " Maître Cuisnier de France" is an outstanding chef and such a nice guy! An absolute Must try is his "egg Moley" FABULOUS! His " Salmon croque Monsieur" is so considerate and delicious for those who keep Kosher. In the evening, the glazed "daurade" is Amazing. Their bread and desserts are Made on premises and DELICIOUS!"

  • "The restaurant's service was fine -- especially because of an attentive manager. I booked because we were attending a concert at the Morgan and since my friend was too late to dine, I only had time to try a couple of things: a mesclun salad with garlic chips and the shrimp risotto with pesto. Both were well-presented and my only real objection was to the risotto, i.e., the amount of oil in the pesto that swam atop the risotto as a bed for the shrimp made the dish far too -- rich? cloying? -- to eat much of. Anyway, while I'm sure Madison is a good neighborhood restaurant, I wouldn't seek it out again."

  • "We have been walking downstairs to eat here almost monthly for 16 years. It seems to always be owned by a different person with a different chef and almost always different waiters. They practically never recognize us and it is always understaffed as well. We truly miss Frere Jacques that was around the corner where they knew our names almost immediately. None of us can figure out why this restaurant always seems so mismanaged."

  • "Nice atmosphere and a good place to spend some time !"

  • "When you're not busy at night you create a menu with minimum choices, no specials and high prices to make every meal COUNT. That's what's happening here with $11.00 for any appetizer (Onion soup?) and $26.00 mains and $11.00 desserts this place is definitely not a bargain. Minimal decor, decent service, average food and high prices won't help this Murray Hill old timer."

  • "We have been going here since they open. they consistent in their food quality and excellent service. We are customers for life here."

  • "I went on a St. Valentine's date to this restaurant and the restaurant proved to be a good place for a date. The food was excellent and the service was good to say the least. The one bad aspect was the music. For a candle-lit French restaurant, the music of choice was a poor idea. The bar played Bob Marley songs back to back the whole time. I love Bob Marley, don't get me wrong. It's just that the music choice took away from the general mood of the restaurant (especially on St. Valentine's day)."

  • "I was attracted to the restaurant by the prix fixe lunch at $27. So I invited a guest and although we had no alcoholic drinks -- in fact only sparkling water and cappuccinos, the bill was just under a hundred dollars. No bargain. But the food was definitely good."

  • "Never having been here before, I didn't know what was in store for my group. As it turned out the full lunch menu was available as a prix fixe lunch--one item from each of the three categories. The food was excellent and in the proper amount. One of the appetizers was actually big enough for lunch: the cheese board. If you just wanted that with either a glass of wine or a cappuchino, it would be more than enough. There is an outdoor eating area behind the restaurant, and we plan to return when the weather moderates."

  • "Pleasant friendly bistro with a solid French menu. Goat cheese appetizer and mushroom soup were formidable. Chef came out to greet us. Service is excellent. Wonderful desserts also."

  • "My party and I arrived at the restaurant and were a bit disappointed from the street as the restaurant looked a bit "dated". However, I'm so glad that we gave this place a chance... The food was AMAZING! The Bourgignon was beautiful and the price fixe menu was absolutely perfect!!!!! I recommend this place to anyone in the area who enjoy a classic, comforting French meal!!"

  • "Madison Bistro is one of the best French restaurants in the city. It also has maybe the best prefix lunch deal in all of Manhattan.I went there for lunch if you visit Morgan Library which is directly across the street. Beautifully prepared dishes -truly in the French manner, excellent service, great location– you cannot go wrong Go!!"

  • "Very good neighborhood French, with reasonable pricing."

  • "The service was better than I expected and the food was fine, it's just that my oyster ceviche had shell bits in it that really hurt my teeth and could have hurt my insides if I had accidentally swallowed the shards. For that carelessness, I would not go back here personally, but feel that it is not a bad place."

  • "We had been here a few years ago and had a memorable evening. So when we went to the city to fall in love again we decided to go back. Are we glad we did. We chose the chef's tasting menu and asked for wine pairing. Avocado and crab was wonderful as a start. The skate was delicious. Melvin took great care of us. We are going back for our anniversary in February."

  • "Disappointing. Braised beef Burg. Too much fat. Not a flavorful sauce. Onion soup excellent. Hot choc cake with an icecream very good. St EMILION wine not up to it's price."

  • "OK but unoriginal and uninspired. Gravlax was on their website menu but not available at the restaurant."

  • "Restaurant has been in neighborhood for years, therefore, I had high expectations. What a disappointment! Too brightly lit, exposing every flaw. First course Bisque was tasty. Turkey dinner had lots of potatoes but a miniscule amount of turkey. One guest asked for only dark meat -- couldn't be done. Shrimp dish had 4 shrimp on some rice-- tasty but small portion with no greens. No choice of desserts -- all three were brought to each.. Only a bite of each -- hardly enough to enjoy. Didn't have any black tea -- only herb flavors."

  • "Madison Bistro is just right. The food is beautifully presented and delicious. The portions are also just the right amount. The menu has a wide selection of French classics expertly prepared. The staff is attentive, but not intrusive. The room is comfortable and the noise level is such that you can hear your companions speaking easily, but you don't hear other diners conversations. Also, by New York City standards, the prices are quite reasonable for such high quality."

  • "Madison Bistro is consistent in the food quality and great service in the dining room. We like the prix fix menus because they are well thought out. We visit NY quarterly and always go there for dinner. The person at the reception desk could be a bit friendlier."

  • "We found the food at Madison Bistro to be fantastic, especially the Short Ribs. My daughter lived in Paris for 5 years and found the food to be comparable. Thank you, The Sumner's from St. Louis"

  • "We attended the Socrates in the City event which took place at the Union League Club around the corner. We wanted a close by neighborhood restaurant and picked the Madison Bistro. We had been there once before but just sat at the bar. This time we were served in the dining room. The entire experience was very enjoyable. Great food, great service and great ambiance is the total package. We will definitely come back. We recommend the cheese platter as a salad/appetizer. It was wonderful with four different types of cheeses and dressed salad. The braised short ribs was fantastic served on mashed potatoes with a lovely brown sauce on top. Yum, yum. If you get a chance definitely try this restaurant - very well done."

  • "I was disapointed by the menu, the not so great service for the price level. In the end the value mix is weak, the food and service dont make up for the high price and limited carte. I will not go there again."

  • "Whether a table for a business discussion, a treat for out-of-town friends, or "just because", the Madison Bistro is that rare New York gem: an unpretentious spot where the food is good, the service friendly, and the time unrushed."

  • "I chose this restaurant as a place to catch up with old friends, so I was happy it was not deafening, although it certainly was lively. My starter of Goat Cheese Galette w/ Honey and Thyme was really tasty, as was my main course of roasted organic chicken. My friends loved their shared dessert of Bourbon Vanilla Creme Brulee, and, while I liked my Lemon & Meringue Tarte, I wish that I had tried the Warm Chocolate Molten Cake. One suggestion for staff: Please offer refills of that great bread without having to be asked!"

  • "Very nice, attentive staff. Service was timely and efficient. Steak tartar table side was very good. Souffle was wonderful. Only put downs - Strip steak was grisly and wine was well over priced. Will definitely go back again."

  • "met my family for lunch there - great food, great service, great atmosphere. only had an hour for lunch (due to my work schedule) - servers didn't rush things but i managed to get back in time highly recommend this place to others."

  • "I am a regular at this place and love their prix fixe lunch menu. The service though is more and more disappointing. Actually the waiters are really nice but the manager is unfriendly and very arrogant. I ordered two glasses of wine and I typically like to see the wine they are pouring so I know it is the wine I ordered. When he brought the glasses, I asked to see the bottle and he was very surprised. He said "this is a bistro and we don't do that here". For $12 a glass of wine, I think it's fair to know you are indeed having the wine you requested! $12 is not a bistro price so you should not give an attitude to clients or maybe lower the wine price to have "bistro prices"!"

  • "We wanted a business lunch location where we could talk, but also enjoy delicious food. Madison Bistro was the perfect place. We arrived at 11:45 and the place was pretty empty. By 12:30pm it was packed, and rightly so. The portions were small, but very appropriate for the priz fixe menu, which was a great deal. I especially loved how many choices there were to pair together. The mussel and couscous salad was incredible. Though the noise level increased once we were surrounded by other people, it was never such that it interrupted our discussion. I recommend this location."

  • "I went with a group of five and when we arrived at 7 PM it was quiet. By the time we left at 9:30 it was much more lively. The menu was classic French bistro food and very well done. The crab and avocado napoleon was a delicious appetizer. There were several grilled fish options for a main course. I had a steack-frites for nostalgic reasons. We shared an apple clafoutis for dessert and a very nicely done crème brulée. The wine list was good but missing several of the selections. Our server was originally from Mali and in fact all of the wait-staff seemed to be African. It was a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere on Madison Ave. about four blocks from Grand Central."

  • "The daurade was perfectly prepared (i.e. not the least overcooked), well-seasoned and accompanied by a tasty anchovy sauce. What a relief from the cooked to death fish accompanied by exotic (read sugar) flavors that passes for cuisine at so many NYC restaurants. My wife's and my server, Omar, was his usual knowledgeable, attentive self."
