Diner Reviews
  • "The service at Madera is stellar, the food is sublime. The wine list is extensive (>1,800 different wines), and the sommeliers (there are several on staff and they roam the restaurant, ready to assist) are quite helpful and skilled in suggesting a wine to accompany your meal. The ambiance We ordered: Frisée and Arugula Salad; Seared Scallop (starters); Roasted Lamb Ribeye; Oak Grilled Beef Strip loin (Main courses); and Toasted Banana Cake & Beignets (dessert). The only reason I gave 4 stars on the food was because we ordered a side of asparagus, and some of the spears were woody at the bottom end...this would be easily remedied by a more careful cleaning process in the kitchen."

  • "Took my family and friends to Madera after a great experience with an Executive Board dinner there a year ago. Our reservation was at 6:45 so we had lovely views through most of dinner until it was dark. Celebrated 3 birthdays and two anniversaries across 5 people and the staff was amazing - champagne waiting for us, special message on the menu, and desserts for all. Food was exceptional. Wine list extensive. Our foodie friends were very happy. The staff also went out of their way to include our 16 year old with a special non-alcoholic drink. Would definitely go back again."

  • "We were looking forward to trying this lovely spot, but were disappointed with the food. It was presented dramatically, but the sole was swimming in crusty salt, and the other items on the plate were mushy and tasteless. The prawns were good, but too large a serving. Service was very intrusive - trying too hard in all respects."

  • "I had a lovely brunch with a good friend and he had fish and chips and I had the banana pancakes and eggs ... which are my personal favorite. Additionally, since the menu changes a bit overtime they had a potato cheese soup and I couldn't pass it up. It was fantastic."

  • "We went to Madera for Sunday brunch after getting a massage at the spa at the Rosewood. The food was just OK, which is not what we expected for the prices they charge ($15 for a plate of unexceptional fruit, for example). The service was slow and inattentive, again not what we expected for a restaurant this expensive. The breads they served were also nothing to write home about. Bottom line, we wouldn't go here again. Try the Village Pub in Woodside for a really special brunch (slow cooked eggs and wonderful breakfast pastries, anyone?)."

  • "We went at 7:30pm on a Thursday for a romantic birthday celebration for two. I had forgotten to mention the birthday when reserving and called just 15-minutes before and left a voice mail. I didn't expect they'd hear it in time, but we were greeted with happy birthday wishes, a special birthday menu and a pretty little birthday desert. Thursday nights are BEYOND BUSY (CHAOTIC) in the BAR, and the dining room was full; this combined with a beautiful, but open, decor with deep tables made for a VERY LOUD room. We had to virtually shout to talk. Regardless, our VERY TASTY drinks came quickly. The service as a whole was outstanding. It was easy to get reach, good parking, and a nice atmosphere. I want to go again and enjoy the deck."

  • "The four of us had dined at and enjoyed Madera about a year ago. Last Friday, all the fish or seafood entrees were overcooked. They also suffered from chef over-think: combining too many ingredients in the main dish trying to create a masterpiece. The noise level limited us to shouting across the table to be heard. even though we were sitting in an alcove to reduce the noise. The waiter was pleasant although he let us sit an hour waiting for the entree without checking back."

  • "We were hosting a lunch for a 96 year old Religious of the Sacred Heart. There were 5 of us and two guests were hard of hearing. When we arrived early, they told us we had a private room since. It was PERFECT and so grateful that the restaurant helped us celebrate this long term educator. The service was excellent, lunch and choice of menu items varied, and the result was delicious. This is our 3rd time here and we would highly recommend your restaurant again and also the experience in the good weather to sit outside."

  • "Dined here for first time for mother's birthday and it was a huge hit. Something for everyone on this wide-ranging, creative menu. The three generations in our group, teens to their grandparents, all loved their meals. Special touches like printing our menus with Happy Birthday. Service was impeccable- attentive but not fussy. Must end with the beignets- yum!"

  • "I had the ocassion to conduct a VC dinner meeting at your facility and found it to be outstanding. The food was perfectly prepared with the kind of care and delicacy that made each dish wonderful. The atomosphere was valley-scenic and pleasant. The service was prompt and on point with each turn. Well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience."

  • "My latest experience at Madera was top notch. Spectacular cuisine from start to finish and wonderful service. Historically, we've tolerated poor service and mediocre food despite the high prices because Madera's ambience and view is so amazing. Happily, there is a new chef in town and it shows! The chef has definitely made his mark with delicious new menu options and noticeably better management of the restaurant service team. Thank you! Looking forward to dining there again soon."

  • "Food was delicious and different. This is not your big vol get fat quick eastern block restaurant. This is a foodie place and my courses were delicious. You may even find a great wine at less than $100 on the oh so chic and expensive wine list."

  • "The hostess was snobbish, borderline rude. The waiter was slow. The place is VERY loud. Prices are typical. The food was very good... but worth it? It definitely is not our first choice."

  • "We felt the food was excellent with an outstanding presentation. Our waiter was very attentive and knew and communicated perfectly. We were lookling for the right environment to celebrate a birthday and have time for us to celebrate."

  • "Great view, average food, environment did not have a very welcoming feel..... The ambience is high end and did not feel very inclusive. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Some worthy food notes include: -Lobster appetizer: fresh and plentiful -Tart dessert: bold and filled with a variety of textures I did appreciate the views as it looked into the countryside of the peninsula. Beautiful greens and hills that go on towards the horizon. The venue is large and spread out: separate room for bar/lounge and the dining room. At the end of the day I would not make the way out here again: a restaurant in the countryside should have more to offer than just the views to be memorable and to be awarded a Michelin Star."

  • "Very noisy restaurant, could hardly hear what our waitress was saying. Wine list is very impressive, though also quite expensive. Given the location (venture capital central) I'm not surprised. Food was ok, well prepared, but not very exciting or really all that great. Probably won't be going back unless someone else is paying."

  • "The new chef at Madera had been in place only one month. Created a new menu. Food taken to a new level so the one star not in jeopardy. Noisier than we liked and the wines are certainly fully priced. But best spot on the peninsula for a special dinner."

  • "My husband and I went to check out the restaurant for a potential location for a dinner party. The service was incredibly slow and we were still hungry after lunch...for a $50 lunch, you'd think I'd be more satisfied."

  • "I love Madera--the menu has basic food items like a fantastic hamburger or divine fish & chips or you can try something really outstanding like the duck or the sole. Nice place to visit, like I said, resort dining close to home."

  • "This was our anniversary dinner, and it didn't disappoint. The ambiance was elegant and inviting, lovely outdoor lighting as well. We were treated to sparkling Cava flutes on arrival, then a wonderful meal followed. Dinner was leisurely, and service was attentive. We enjoyed all of our courses. My husband had the saddle of lamb for his main, and I had the Liberty duck breast. Everything was prepared with expertise and was delicious and attractive. We are looking forward to another dinner soon!"

  • "Portions were small, I could have eaten 3 appetizers and 3 main courses, I had the beef main course and a scallop. That's right, 1 scallop for the appetizer. Pricey, but what do you expect for Menlo Park. $281, 4 people, 1 person drinking wine, $50 tip, $331 birthday dinner. 3 appetizers, 4 main dishes, 1 side dish, 1 wine drinker, 2 drinking soda, and 1 drinking water. 1 dessert. 1 coffee."

  • "My wife and I dine there few days ago, service was very good. She order fish and I order steak. My steak was not good, her fish dish was very good. I notice the table width for two is too long, it is hard to talk and hear each other with the background noise."

  • "Six of us (all part of the same family, but adults), decided to try the Madera. We all immediately noticed how loud it was and felt uncomfortable trying to speak up to hear one another. Having said that we all enjoyed the meal and service which was spot on. But to have to hear the waiter speak they had to be literally speaking to your ear. Couldn't someone come up with an idea for bringing a soft canopy sound barrier to the ceiling? I would never go there with my husband if I knew we had to yell. Compliments to the kitchen and wait staff!!!"

  • "I took my wife here for Valentine's dinner. I figured that since it was a Michelin-starred restaurant, it ought to be excellent. In truth, I found it to be entirely forgettable. Of the four courses, only the second--a lobster dish--was noteworthy. The others were pretty pedestrian, of the same quality I would expect at a much less expensive restaurant. None of the food was bad, but even at a much lower price, I can't say I'd order any of the dishes again. The ambiance was nothing to write home about, either. By contrast, the service was excellent. The wait staff was polite, timely, and completely professional. Conclusion: very good service, but I'd recommend looking elsewhere for above average food."

  • "The prrice was over the top and the entrees were ok."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Poor food for a michelin 1 star restaurant. Hamachi crudo appetizer had no acid component (e.g. citrus) making it quite bland. Poached lobster was the worst, consistency was way too soft, either overcooked in sous vide style or poor quality / frozen. Red meat entree was OK only, carrot puree was too sweet and not a good pairing. Dessert was OK. Altogether not well done in a creative sense nor was it a strong execution of classic dishes. The dining room decor was the only nice part."

  • "We returned to Madera for our Valentines dinner a day early... Our table was comfortable, our waiter was great, very accommodating to our special needs (gluten free breads, alcohol free food preparation). Food was tasty and deserts were too."

  • "They're a welcome addition in a neighborhood that strangely has few good restaurants. Their menu has tended to be a little to "red meat" for me, but they've been getting more balanced lately."

  • "I always enjoy going to Madera, but have found the food to be below average, especially given the price. Service is pleasant but a bit distracted."

  • "I have been to Madera a lot and there food and service are excellent. This particular day I was sharing brunch with a friend ... their amazing pancakes and eggs benedict. However, lets talk about Benedict for a moment ... I got an email a few hours after having my lovely meal ... saying they had cancelled the reservations that I was at. In other words costing me my OpenTable points (and potential revenue to OpenTable). So I contacted OpenTable support and after a couple of emails over a few days they corrected the situation for me. I am hoping this was a mistake ... but it didn't seem to cool to me ... and it cost me time straightening it out with OpenTable."

  • "I had two associates in from Tokyo for Sand Hill Road meetings. We started the day with a two hour breakfast at Madera as we honed our pitch, well powered by their world-class breakfast cuisine. Madera emptied out past 9, allowing us to work in leisure, with outstanding service attending to us throughout. Following a boffo pitch meeting that extended beyond 90 minutes, we returned for lunch. This time, no reservation. However, the 30 minute wait for a table was sunnily passed over Cokes and Iced Tea on the Valley's best veranda. Taking our dining table, with our drink tab seamlessly transferred to our lunch tab, two of us went for the Salmon Curry, while the odd man out had the Sea Bass, if memory serves. A++ all around."
