Diner Reviews
  • "The beer here is tasty. Not WHOA AWESOME, but better than most. We got the sampler, which is great, because SAMPLES OF FIVE. We got an appetizer of Bitterballen (lamb and beef)...which was fried. They were fine. The consistency was a little mushy. But the flavor was fine. I wouldn't get them again. Then we got pizzas: Fig & Balsamic Blues and The Garlic Pig. These were both outstanding. We will go back for the beer and pizza. It was very LOUD. It's a warehouse-style building (brewery and all), but they'd do well to throw some sound-deadening panels around."

  • "Went to visit my son who lives in the area. It was a really nice evening. The beers were great and the fried chicken was outstanding. I would recommend it highly...and look forward to my next visit."

  • "If you are a beer lover, you'll love Mad Fox. The food is better than just pub food and the beers are terrific. Get a reservation on the weekends. It's a busy place."

  • "The food and service were both great, I have no complaints to register. However, the beer was out of this world. I highly recommend Mad Fox for any beer lover!"

  • "Arrived at 7:25 for a 7:30 reservation, was informed that it would be a five minute wait while they cleared some tables. At 7:45 the host came over and told us that he did us a favor by inserting us into the queue and that it would only be another 25 minute wait. This would have put a 7:30 reservation at more like 8:15. Might as well not bother making one in the first place if that's the case. We left after that."

  • "I really enjoyed getting to try some of their delicious beers and especially the cask brews! The mac & cheese and onion rings were some of the most spectacular items I tried. We had the frickles & bacon jam burger too and those were also good. It was my first time but I definitely want to come back and try more beers and more items from their menu. It was tough to decide what to order, with so many yummy-sounding choices! Our server was very good--I deducted one star only because there were definite lag times in waiting for him to come back to our table. However, when he was at our table, he was excellent to discuss the menu and beer items with and really took the time to discuss our questions. Great spot--we'll be back!!!"

  • "This is a great event. I love trying all the different kinds of barleywines. Food is great too. Keep having specials during your events. In spite of the demand, the staff kept up very well. Kudos to them. And they are very personable too."

  • "Waiter was not very attentive. After placing drink order, had to flag down another wait staff as our original waiter disappeared for at least 10 minutes! Once he did come back, we informed him that we had ordered our meals with someone else since he was not around. After food arrived, waiter was not attentive to our needs at all--had to flag him down for drink refills, etc."

  • "Been a while since we went to Mad Fox. Have always enjoyed the beer, and the food is usually really good. This time out however, everything seemed a bit off. Enjoyed our server, but he seemed a little overburdened. Food was good for the most part. My daughter's pizza looked worse than I recall their pizza being (glad I did not order one!), fries were cold, and the growler of beer I brought home was flat. So, all in all, rather disappointing this time around... Hopefully next time will be better."

  • "Mad Fox, as far as food is concerned, never lets us down. The service was okay. Wish our server had been a little more attentive. But, we do love the place otherwise"

  • "We arrived early for our reservation, so we thought we'd check in and ask if we could get seated early. The hostess who checked us in was particularly curt with her comments, ending with, "Well, you'll get seated by the time of your reservation. That's all I can say." She didn't direct us to a waiting area, suggest that we get a drink from the bar, nothing. We were seated exactly at our reservation time, and not a moment earlier (hmmm......). Our waitress was very pleasant and energetic, and the food was very good. However, partway through the meal, the fire alarm started going off. It continued to wail for at least 15 minutes while the fire department arrived. Then the alarm went off a second time. Lovely ambiance. :-("

  • "... we enjoyed the appetizers (Frickles and Marrow), but were a bit disappointed about the main courses (Schnitzel and Wild Boar Ragout). However, will come back to try other items. The service was below expectations. It took forever for someone to come around to remove the empty plates from our table and the restaurant wasn't that full. The beer selection is fantastic and, coming from Europe, the Koelsch is highly recommendable."

  • "We have been coming here since it opened and it is always solid. You have probably heard everyone talk about the Frickles -- fried pickles. They are the best around and we always order some, even if we are trying to be good! The burgers are can't miss but something you really need to try the pizzas. The basics are great, but you have to try the Garlic Pig. The beer is also a highlight here, lots of solid standbys and some more adventurous ones as well. Make sure you swing by on Tuesdays for their 1/2 price growler fills! Orange Whip IPA and Slobberknocer Barlyewine are two to look out for."

  • "Comfortable and relaxing place to eat and enjoy a good craft beer. Easy to have a conversation, knowledgeable waitstaff, easy parking in the free garage. LOVE the Fig & Balsamic Blues pizza!"

  • "Hello- This was our first time dining at this restaurant. The bar area had a warm feel to it. They offered decent craft beers. We sat in the dining area for dinner. It was a big open space. We ordered 'Frickles' - fried pickles. I usually don't order this type of food but I must say the frickles were absolutely the best thing we ate all night. My husband ordered the buttermilk fried chicken and I got a kale salad and tomato soup. His chicken was okay and my meal was gross. I should have ordered more bar style food...it may have been better. Overall it was an okay place. I'd go back and just have beer and appetizers."

  • "I've eaten here twice in the last four months, and the experience has been similar. Food is very good, the second meal maybe not quite as good as the first; and there is a good selection of premises-brewed beers; but service has suffered from the same problem - the entree has been delivered before we were half way through the appetizer. Both times, I raised the problem with the waiter (although it wasn't his fault, I think) and the manager, and the response from the manager was essentially "mmm, sorry but the kitchen runs on a timer, and we deliver when the food is ready". I guess I shall have to warn the waiter if I go again that I would like to eat at a more leisurely pace than the restaurant schedules, but perhaps I won't bother."

  • "This used to be our "go-to" brewery restaurant with a creative menu and a wide variety of very good food, and we don't even live in Falls Church. I used to marvel at how under salted the fries were for a place like this. This time the fries and the kale salad were extremely salty. The pork schnitzel was more like ham and cheese flattened into mush and the spetzl had no taste at all. The manager came and just smiled as we mentioned how we were regulars and that the meal was below usual standards. He did offer a new order of fries, but we declined. We weren't looking for free food, but there was no offer of an adjustment made to our bill or even a dessert."

  • "Good beer. Food was mediocre; I visited with four friends who each ordered a different dish. The dishes were ok, but nothing to write home about. Definitely worth the visit to taste the beers."

  • "I love the changing menu and focus on local providers. It also is a casual spot to either grab a beer, meet up for pizza, watch a game,or you can bring the kids. As for the menu, I always order simple and have not been disappointed. Love the pretzel twist with a good brew:)"

  • "The food and fresh beers at Mad Fox keep bringing us back. The bitterballen are a special treat as are the sampling flights of beer."

  • "Unfortunately the service, atmosphere, and some of the food fall flat. The atmosphere was less brew pub and more family restaurant. We had the special appetizers of pork belly and onion carbonara, both of which were delicious. The waitress seemed intent on flipping tables and was trying to hurry us through our meal. My pizza was good, but my husband's duck confit and ham was just a cubed-ham sandwich. It also came out with the wrong side but the waitress questioned what he ordered rather than apologizing and fixing it right away. She did bring the correct side but said she had to check the ticket first... She also had taken our silverware with the empty appetizer dishes and didnt bring us any new. It was ok, but nothing special."

  • "I have eaten at Mad Fox over 50 times and it is consistently good. Chef Andrew is a master at his craft. The food combinations and flavors are something to be celebrated. When you make all the food in-house including the condiments, then you are doing something right. Do yourself a favor and go. It'll be on of the best meals you've had in a very long time."

  • "The brandied wee heavy stout was not only the most unusual beer I have ever had; it was one of the best. The bacon jam burger was also very good. The place was noisy but we could hear each other easily."

  • "This was my second visit to MFB, and I'm already looking forward to my third. The beer is fantastic (beer menu is extensive, obviously) - try the beer flight! The food? Top notch...both visits, it was high quality, served at the right temperature, delicious, fresh ingredients, presented beautifully. Kudos to the chef and his staff. Service was a bit slow (but tolerably so), but it was a very busy evening (happy hour and a corporate event). I will definitely be going back; this place is great!"

  • "Finally made it to Mad Fox. Great kids menu, takes reservations, generous seating space, and hip decor. Friendly, prompt service. Clearly lots of regulars. Fried pickles were awesome. Bacon wrapped meatloaf tasty and generous portion. Burger requested medium well served medium/medium rare. Beers tasty and good varieties - imperial Russian stout my favorite of the night. Oh, and easy free parking. Will definitely return and add as an alternative to Dogfish Head Alehouse and Ramparts in Alexandria."

  • "I've been to Mad Fox many times, but the most recent experience was the best so far. Our server was knew the menus top to bottom and was able to answer our questions and offer suggestions based on what we were looking for. The food and service were outstanding, once again!"

  • "Though microbreweries continue to increase in popularity, it's unusual to find one that not only serves great beer but also serves food that is well above the usual fare. This was a return visit and the experience was, generally, pleasant. We happened to make a lunch reservation on a day when Mad Fox was sponsoring a big outdoor event, in front of the restaurant. It added to the noise level but, overall the experience was still pleasant."
