Diner Reviews
  • "My family has been visiting Cape May for 15 years. We always make it a point to dine at The Mad Batter. Their food and dining experience have been consistently excellent!"

  • "We were a party of six, with one of us a child. The sea bass and salmon were raved about. And the senior licked her fingers while devouring her fish & chips. I ordered from the Specials, and was disappointed. It was the grizzly steak du jour. It was tedious to cut around all the fat, so I left unfulfilled. I spoke to my waitress about it and was told that this cut of meat always has this much fat. A sirloin? I left it at that. It was a long day and I wasn't going to debate it. But next time...I'm going to get a pizza."

  • "Loved the 8-3 time for breakfast. Great selections for all meals. Service was prompt and servers were very friendly."

  • "This was my first visit to Cape May and the Mad Batter was highly recommended. It did not disappoint! Outstanding food and service!"

  • "great drink menu- pizza appetizers big enough for a one person meal. Crab cakes were delicious as was the tuna special. Our waitress Sue was great"

  • "Food is good with a nice selection of items for everyone. The cocktails are great. Pleasurable dining experience inside and outside on the patio"

  • "This restaurant was just OK. The food was OK; with a few really good dishes---the Chilean Sea Bass, the Loaded Fries and a Mozzarella appetizer--- but most of the rest just average. The ambience is a bit strange starting with one really dark bar room, a "sunroom" that was like a meat freezer with the air conditioning blasted, and lastly a garden room that overlooked a charming garden; but the interior of the room was so-so. There were annoying flies in the place. The service was very good. Too pricey for what it is. A disappointment."

  • "Our food was superb - I loved the seafood bisque. The wine list offered a terrific variety and our main courses were very good. We had an attentive waitress as well. I will definitely come back."

  • "I loved eating outside. The ambiance was very nice. And the service was exceptional!"

  • "Just looking at the restaurant I knew it was gonna be great. From the first drink I tasted it was nothing short of spectacular. I am a vegetarian and they had multiple dishes I could choose from which is very hard to come by in the Cape May area! I can not wait to go back again and will definitely be telling everyone to come here!"

  • "Good Food all around! Fun times!! House wine could be better selection for price. Was not good. We got a bottle of KJ and was happy!"

  • "Have always been satisfied with the experience! Food, service and entertainment are always great."

  • "Mad Batter is a very good restaurant in the heart of Cape May and the Cape May Mall and 1/2 block from the Beach. It is also part of a Bed & Breakfast that accommodates its guests. The serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner and they are all great. From their Panini's to Fish & Chips to Crab Cakes and their daily specials. They even have a gluten free menu. You can dine inside, in their sun room or their comfortable porch. So, when we are in Cape May we never miss a chance to dine at the Mad Batter and neither should you."

  • "My husband & I had a great dinner at The Mad Batter. Friends had dined there for brunch, but we were looking for a local stop for weeknight dinner. The menu & daily specials were great for foodies! Wait staff was attentive, tables were appropriately spaced & the food was wonderful. We will try the brunch menu next & can't wait for friends to join us when they vacation in Sea Isle City later this month."

  • "We went for dinner, family of 4. We sat outside, nice table and view of houses on Jackson Street. Service was good, food was terrible for the price."

  • "Nothing bad to say, and my boyfriend really enjoyed the food. Thought it was the best French Toast he's every had! We went there for both dinner and breakfast twice. It's good food, but nothing extraordinary. You'll be happy if you eat here! It's extremely popular but they move through the tables really quickly so the wait was never long."

  • "We have been coming to the Mad Batter for 10 years now and we have never been disappointed. Food and service is excellent."
    Dined on 8/24/2013
  • "The salmon was great, but the penne was barely edible. 2 people at our table had that meal and both of them (who never complain about the food), said it was horrible. The sauce was tasteless and watery. Would not go back for dinner. It was pricey for only 1 out of 3 meals being edible."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Way too expensive for dinner! $30.00 for 3 shrimp and 2 scallops with lobster ravioli?? Not even a salad to accompany the meal??? Forget about it!"
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "The Mad Batter Restaurant was such a nice place -- the atmosphere, the food, the service! I love to eat outside & the views from both inside the restaurant and from the street (look around at the beautifully decorated homes w/ pretty flowers), watching the trolley tours going by, the neighborhood kitty cats moving about.... it was a very very very nice experience!"

  • "This is our third visit at the Mad Batter within two trips to Cape May. The first time we had both lunch & dinner there, on two separate days. During our recent visit we decided we'd try a few different 'starters' as our meal. We began by each having a bowl of the 'Mad batter Clam Chowder' which was very good. Then proceeded to our favorite time on the menu...'Bayberry Wings'. The thai honey hot sauce they are tossed in along with the fried crispiness of these wings make these wings awesome...definitely order these! We finished with an order of the 'Steamed Mussels...the addition of the chorizo sausage & onion in the white wine broth is great! They have cool alcoholic drinks also! Make a reservation here the next time you visit Cape May!"

  • "The food is solid, the service is good. It is good for families, couples, friends. Sit on the porch if you can. If you are a party of 5 or there is no availability on the porch, sit near the garden. If you sit inside, the noise escalates. The fresh juices are a bit pricey but tasty. The bread basket is always a staple, and the Morgan Rostie is one of our favorites. We have even ordered the crab cake for brunch without the bread and a side of remoulade, as well as the chicken salad croissant. It is a relaxing setting and one we keep coming back to because of the value for a Cape May brunch with pleasant people."

  • "Overpriced and way too salty! So many other better places to try in Cape May! "

  • "Did not enjoy this place for dinner, see my review on Yelp. I disagree with how they serve their food and wish we had chosen a better place to eat dinner our first night in Cape May. "

  • "Enjoyed a very courteous waiter and staff along with live music while we ate a delicious meal. Kids likes their food and my wife was happy to have her vegetarian options. I really enjoyed the crab cake entree. Last are there ten years ago. Stable and longlasting. "

  • "The mahi mahi had little taste and came with black beans that may have come directly from a can, as well as a mango salsa that was just large cubes of mango that were not ripe. The crab cakes were fine but had tons of mayo, and came with tasteless noodles. The skirt steak was tasty but extremely chewy and the fries were soggy. The Chilean sea bass was the only item on the menu that did not disappoint. For $55 per person there are many places to get a much better meal! I cannot begin to understand what philadelphia magazine was talking about! "

  • "Have always enjoyed our meals here whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Mad Batter is always a stop on our annual Cape May vacations. It's nestled in a historic neighborhood with several lovely inns. Will come back again!"

  • "What a great find...in the heart of Cape May. Had Lunch and Dinner here, both were superb! Service was excellent..everyone so nice. Don't miss this restaurant when you are in Cape May. Would suggest a reservation as it can get crowded, especially for brunch."

  • "Overall just ok. Drinks were average. Entree came out with cold sweet potatoes took back and microwaved ok but no really effort to make up for such a oversight"
    Dined on 5/7/2014
  • "I ate there on a Sunday night in early May. The restaurant was fairly full. We had the apple and spinach salads and an appetizer of mussels - all of which were very good. We also ate the crab cake sandwich and blackened fish sandwich - both of which were fine. We wanted something on the lighter side and this was perfect. Waiter was very nice. There was rather a long wait for the food and the bill.... The meal was fine, but nothing special. It's on a nice street in the downtown area of Cape May, so excellent location."
    Dined on 5/4/2014
  • "The wait staff was very friendly. The roll and dipping sauce was excellent! Food was good, but a little pricey. Generous portions, but potatoes came out cold. I would go back for lunch, but not dinner. $33. A plate was a bit to much for the quality of food."

  • "we had a great dining experience. We liked it so much for dinner we went back for breakfast the next morning. We had an acoustic guitarist playing throughout dinner and enjoyed the breeze is on the porch for breakfast I must stop when you in Cape May."

  • "GREAT RESTAURANT. We sat on the heated porch. Every table was filled on a Tuesday night in April. Crab cakes were to die for. ALL CRAB!!! Side was mac&cheese . The best ever. Skirt steak was excellent. Disappointed in the loaded fries. Was told by a couple during Happy Hour in the bar that they were delicious. Not to my liking. Should have not been, but they were very bland. Even with bacon , cheese and onions. Breakfast was also excellent and included in our overnight package as was a 30% discount on dinner. No dessert, too full."

  • "Ate here on a cold night in Cape May. Ordered some cocktails, had the seafood soup (which was loaded with bacon), I had the filed and crab cake, which were delicious. All in all a really nice meal and we'll be back!"
