A word from Macy's - The Oak Grill
A Minneapolis tradition was born on October 2, 1947, when the Oak Grill opened for business. Architect Bob Hansen used characteristics from the Jacobean period in the design of the rooms. The ornate fireplace, originally from Salisbury, England, was over 300 years old when it was transported in sections and reassembled in the Oak Grill. With its solid oak columns and vast frame, it soon became the room's focal point. Its distinctive appearance, along with dark paneling, red chairs and dim lighting, help give the Oak Grill its cozy ambiance.Continued

  • "I ate here when I was kid many years ago and always remembered it. I went to the Macy's flower show and made reservations to have lunch with my son and we both enjoyed it. The quiche was great and the salad even better!"

  • "I have been going to the Oak Grill for at least 50 years. I always enjoy the staff and food. I also love the style of the room."

  • "We have a 91 year old mother who can' t hear in any noisy restaurant, which seems to be all of them. The Oak Grille is quiet, has wonderful food and the overall ambience is perfect. My husband and/or friends have also enjoyed a relaxing lunch after shopping where we can actually have a conversation. This place is really a gem"

  • "I used to work downtown and went to the oak grill several times, for me it was like coming back to a friendly place; love their popovers"

  • "Was expecting to have Quiche for dinner after looking at the menu online. After getting seated, looked for the quiche and it was on the restaurant menu and asked the server for two Quiches. He replied the Oak Room only serves quiche for lunch. Looked again at the menu and did not see anywhere that quiche was only served for lunch. So we had a starter and one soup for me and one salad for my partner. When the food was ready every thing was served altogether Popovers, the starter, soup, salad. Not too impressed."

  • "We have been to this restaurant when it was very busy, and quiet. The service was outstanding at both times. It is in a department store, and has been there for many many years. It is beautifully done."

  • "Macy's was showing off a great dining experience: up to date food and great service in a beautiful, historic space. Flower show is a great community and family event. Kudos!"

  • "We went to the Floral Show and then lunch at Oak Grille. I really liked it, the atmosphere, the food, and the service. It felt like an occasion."

  • "Not up to usual par. Waitress was crazy, told us drinks were not good, didn't let us order salads we wanted. Popovers were ok. Birthday celebration was definitely not what we planned."

  • "A group of friends had lunch together and had great service along with good food all in a setting from days past!!"

  • "The Oak Room doesn't disappoint. We took my grandma to the flower show and then lunch at the Oak room and it was a memorable day. The popovers are amazing and now they are serving red velvet cupcakes with your meal. The food was great and the sevice was too. They did a great job accomodating a wheel chair too."

  • "Old world feeling, with dark wood paneled walls - love the 300 year old fireplace and also the popovers served with each meal. Was a great lunch with friends."

  • "We were promptly seated at our time reserved. Our server was very thorough and excellent at her job. Everyone loved their burgers and salads. I had the special Salmon N. Salad and it was beautiful and colorful on my plate with cut egg and cut red grape tomatoes with the greens and red salmon. My friends had not been at the Oak Grill before, and they felt the restaurant was elegant and a special place to go."

  • "We were especially excited that we could make a reservation this year. It certainly eliminated the angst we have experienced as part of a long line from past years. Our waitress was especially attentive, efficient and helpful. The food was delicious with a great variety to choose from."

  • "I have been here two times so far. Each time there was a different server, The first time it was a female and the second it was a male. I ordered burger both times and I asked to keep everything off of my burger except for sauteed onions. The first time, they gave me a burger with a patty and nothing else. Onions came about 30 mins later when I reminded her again. Similarly the 2nd time I asked for mashed potatoes instead of fries. Server ALSO forgot and I had to remind again and then got me mashed potatoes about 24 mins later. This place gets quite busy so they fail to keep their service level up. The service at Macy's (retail store) and their restaurant is totally different. The food quality is decent but the service is very poor!"

  • "The restaurant was very busy due to the Flower show. However, the staff was very helpful and prompt service. Parking was $21 so would only go once a year."

  • "As always we like to go there anytime we are downtown and more so when we visit the Macy's flower show. Grand daughters love it. Nice and classy for the cost of the meals."

  • "Resturant was very busy, and service was not outstanding, had the halibut but there was so much of the tomato salsa on top the fish arrived very cool, was good though! We were full but wanted the chocolate cake fir later, kitchen litterley dumped the pieces together in the very very large to go container, what a mess, could not really serve!"

  • "I love having lunch at Macy's with my best friends. This is where we always go when we get together. The waiter was so busy I didn't want him to have to warm up our food which was a bit too cool. We all ordered the salmon on mango sauce with lentils, etc. Can you serve the salmon on a bed of wheatberries and rice instead, but with mango sauce?. The Good Earth serves it this way, and it is especially good. The menu is especially nice, and thank you for giving us such a nice time at your restaurant., ,"

  • "Our server Dianna was pleasant offering great suggestions on food choices. A few orders were changed after hearing other diners choices, she took it all with a smile and saying it's OK! It was a busy time we dined, yet she served us in a very timely manner with beverages and our entrees. We have a great time."

  • "Crazy and busy lunch time with the Garden show on. Packed. I wish I had chosen elsewhere. Too noisy to take a conversation to any level with a friend other than "how are you?" French onion soup was awesome. Hummas plate was too expensive for the inexpensive food served on the platter."

  • "What fun to have lunch in an elegant restaurant with the ambience of times past. Nothing "trendy" here, just great service and great food in a restaurant with a history. I hope Macy's never "updates" this place. Also, I've had less than stellar experiences here, but this time everything was perfect."

  • "I had one of their signature items and it was bland. I ordered one brand of vodka which I was told they carried only to find out they ran out!!! The only good thing I can say was the popovers were as good as I remember them from 15 years ago."

  • "My husband and I make it to the cities about 6 times a year, and at least three of those times we dine at the Oak Grill. With the proliferation of mid century modern and contemporary restaurants in Minneapolis, the richly paneled and well appointed Oak Grill is at once, in comparison, familiar, warm and inviting. They've made a couple of nods to the present with some unfortunate wall sconces and new dining chairs, which lack support. After Rae, our excellent server, brought us delectable, flaky pop-overs, my husband chose a grilled flank steak dish and I had walleye. Both arrived to our linen covered table beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We followed up with a lime custard and a flour-less chocolate cake with ice cream. Yum!"

  • "Very enjoyable dinning experience! The second time I have been back for lunch in the last 90 days and the service and food was just as great as the first visit. I had the carmelized salmon and my friend chose the walleye for our entrees - both delicious. The warm popovers are always a treat and the red velvet cupcakes for dessert were also tasty. Would recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "Many Minnesotans remember coming to the Oak Grill for special occasions with mom - or extended family. It was the special treat after back-to-school shopping, or when visiting the annual flower show or holiday displays at Dayton's. The Oak Grill lives on in Macy's with the famous popovers and classic fare from an earlier era. It's great for lunch with friends - but noon on Sunday - better known as opening time at Macy's - may be a stretch for the staff. The food was great but our poor server was overwhelmed and couldn't remember what she did or didn't tell us each time she arrived at the table. Overall - we had a great time at the Oak Grill as it was everything we had expected."

  • "We always enjoy our lunch at the Oak Grill. The "clubby" feel is fun and the service is always fast and friendly. Love the popovers and the cupcake that was an unexpected treat. Great experience as usual!"

  • "My friend and I have a yearly tradition...we schedule a day for Macy's spring flower show and brunch at the Oak Grill. After the bitter winter of 2014, we found "The Secret Garden" to be exquisite, the ambiance of the Oak Grill-classic, the quiche-excellent, the complimentary red velvet cupcakes-a pleasant surprise, and the popovers-iconic. We were not disappointed as we basked in the warmth of the restaurant's fireplace - totally distracted from the still-cold days that hold Spring hostage."

  • "Lunch is always fun at the Oak Grill as our group never feels rushed. The selection of food items is excellent. One of our group eats only gluten free and she was pleased to see the selection. I really liked my Thai Chicken Salad as it was very refreshing. The various "flower" cocktails that were offered was very refreshing. It's fun to stray away from your typical glass of wine. It's a nice touch to give us the german chocolate cupcake as a "Thank you". The service was excellent as usual."

  • "A hustling, bustling place during Macy's Garden Show! It was so wonderful see the restaurant filled with people out for lunch on a Saturday afternoon!"

  • "We had a noon reservation and were seated at 12:10. Not bad considering how busy the restaurant was. Food was excellent. Service was good as they were very busy. Had two children, ages 9 & 11: great children's menu options. Prices are amazingly low for downtown and the portions were ample. Wine list small, yet something for everyone."

  • "Our last visit was March 29, 2014 while we were enjoying the Macy's Spring Flower show. We made reservations at The Oak Grill for lunch. The environmnet was great. The food was wonderful. And our server, Enrique, was outstanding. As we are from out of town, we only get the chance to visit a few times a year but one of our favorite places."

  • "We had no problem getting into the restaurant and out before our Orchestra Hall concert Friday evening. Our service was excellent. We had the fish & chips, and that was excellent also. In the past we have had other menu items which were also very good. We like the ambiance of the Oak Grill. It has an easy comfortable atmosphere. The waitresses are excellent. We especially like Rae, but everyone has been efficient and pleasant. We definitely will return when we go downtown next."
