A word from Macondo
Located at 157 E. Houston Street, Macondo brings Latino comida de la calle (Latin street food) to the gourmet level with a menu offering seven different signature items representative of cuisines from all over the Spanish-speaking world. Macondo was created by f and emerging restaurateur Héctor Sanz, the pioneers of Estilo Libre Latino (Freestyle Latino) cuisine. It serves arepas from Venezuela, cocas from Barcelona, churros con chocolate from Spain, and tacos from Mexico and features a Brazilian Juice Bar with freshly-squeezed extracts. A fresh fruit cocktail menu will be designated by "fruit" + "spirit" and, in a New York City first, Macondo will introduce Escanciar Sidra, a traditional and dramatic way of pouring hard cider that originated in Spain in which the liquid cascades four feet from a spout into the customer's glass to create a brief, Champagne-like effervescence.Continued

  • "Everything was delicious from the cocktails to the empanadas and main dishes. Simply fantastic!!!"

  • "Everything on the menu is wonderful. Personal favorites are the tuna & salmon based dishes. The atmosphere is both casual & intimate, which makes it an excellent spot for relaxing with favorite friends, or having an easily romantic evening. Having a cocktail or a glass of wine at the bar is also delightful. The staff is friendly & accommodating. I would definitely say that this is one best restaurants in the city."

  • "Had a great brunch dining experience! The service was INCREDIBLE! Great drinks and even better food. I would definitely recommend Macondo for an excellent dining experience."

  • "Ordered a bunch of tapas which were yummy, though the yuca fries were under-cooked and way too hard to eat. There was an issue with drinks at the bar in the front and the back, and I felt like the service thereafter was a bit poor. Not sure if it was the corner table or if we upset them. Anyways, I'd go back in hopes of slightly better service the next round."

  • "Went here for the first time last week in the evening. The good was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately the service was seriously lacking. It felt like none of the servers had ever done this before. Constantly disappearing, taking food before we were finished, not offering us anything..."

  • "great drink list. fun cocktails either individual or in a pitcher. Menu looked good but only tried the tuna...DELISH"

  • "Went here for brunch when my sister and multiple friends were visiting. They loved it! Even though half of my party came late due to traffic in LES, we were still seated and got our full 2 hours session of unlimited mimosas. The drinks were great and the food was too."

  • "Went for brunch on the weekend and the food was delicious. We had steak and eggs and the salmon Benedict, both served with a Latin twist. They had a drink package which we didn't opt for, but it seems like good value. The service was quite slow. I don't mind waiting for food but waiting to place orders for drinks is frustrating. Overall, a decent brunch spot."

  • "The drinks were outstanding. We got a whole bunch of appetizers and empanadas to share and it was a great decision. Was full but comfortable and everything was delicious. The patatas bravas were the highlight for me. Was a bit loud which was fun for girls night but might not be a great place for a first date. "

  • "Came here for my birthday brunch with friends. Service was not great, entire staff seemed inconvenienced by us being there from the start. The food was delicious though and I'd give it another try, hopefully it will be better overall. "

  • "Made a reservation for 3 and they sat us at the counter. Would have preferred a table for easier communication, but overall the experience was positive. "

  • "not too busy on the wknd. everything was just ok. sunny side up eggs were all overcooked, but they were able to accommodate a large group and were flexible with our timing because they weren't too busy. if you have a large group that will not be on time, go here for brunch. they are very accommodating. worth it to have food that was just ok to have the flexibility."

  • "I've been here twice now -- most recently on a Wednesday night -- and it's been great each time. If you're in the area and are in the mood for tapas hit up Macondo. "

  • "Great small plates. Patata bravas very good. Tuna cubes seasoned perfectly. Gazpacho delicious. Ceviche inside an avocado very interesting. Very young crowd. All 20's and 30's. Didn't bother us at all because the food and service were really wonderful. Would return for the great food."

  • "The Latin music keeps the energy high, but it's the food coming out of Macondo's busy kitchen that'll make you want to come back. Macondo takes the greatest hits of Latin street food from many countries and puts a bunch of it on one menu. Traditional Spanish tapas mix well with arepas and empanadas from South America. Try the grilled octopus or the roasted short ribs to start. The ceviches are well prepared and fish tacos are superb. For fun, just order a bunch of stuff, some sangria or a bottle of Albarino, and share. A fun night that won't break the bank."

  • "I had brunch with a friend here and and we enjoyed ourselves a great deal. Our Spanish waiter was friendly, funny and very attentive. The food was delicious and we like the $13 for bottomless mimosas in different flavors. I'll be back."

  • "the ambiance of this restaurant is lovely, the drinks were great - we shared a carafe of a ginger and lemon margarita that packed a punch - but the food was so so. we started with the chicken empanadas, which were overly floury, a little hard, and overall just not very fresh tasting. next we had the quinoa and beet salad, which was good but a very sweet, mushy and overdressed dish in my opinion. finally, the flatbread with seared tuna which was absolutely fantastic. one of the best tuna pizzas i've ever had! if we ever return we'll just get 3 of those!"

  • "Okay, if you don't care about slow service, or the fact that you have to get up every 5 minutes so the person next to you can go pee because the tables are weirdly positioned too close to each other, and you just want to enjoy a yummy meal, then definitely check out Macondo. Way too crowded and again with that seat. But also, it's beyond annoying when you go for an AYCD brunch and have to wait about 20 minutes between each drink. The patatas bravas were delicious, however, and made up for everything."

  • "This is my second time at Macondo for boozy brunch and it was definitely a better experience then the first time! The first time wasn't bad but they have seemed to step up their game (or at least my server did) making sure your glass was never empty! The food is also delicious!"

  • "Great food. the flavors were bold and authentic with a modern trendiness to the dish. Great service. appreciate Latin beer being on the menu. lighting was dark bar like, and a little cramped. delicious, delicious food!"

  • "I made my reservation at Macando specifically for their boozy brunch, and I must say, it did not disappoint. Their selection of mimosas were great. I made sure to try all three but the more traditional ones were my favorite. I will admit that I wasn't exactly thrilled with my entrée (chicken chilaquiles) but thankfully between the yuca fries I ordered to start and the amazing cocktails, I was able to get over the disappointment of main course."

  • "Cannot complain about the food, it was great! Price was also very reasonable. On the down side, there are no individual tables, you are forced to sit at the same table with other people. Tables accommodate 6 people, would recommend going with 6 or more."

  • "The food at Macando was very good. Unfortunately, that is the most that can be said. Despite making a reservation, we were asked to wait 30 minutes because "there are people who have paid but aren't leaving their table." We asked about one of the open tables but were told "a larger party is coming in so we're holding it" even though other groups of four had been sat at similar tables. The service was dismal. We weren't asked how our food was. I understand that restaurants don't want to give unlimited alcohol, but our mimosas went un-refilled for about 25 minutes at one point. We needed to flag the waiter down repeatedly. There was a woman working at a host/waitress and she was great. Kudos to her. Overall, I would not return."

  • "Came here with a group of 8-10 ppl .. hostess and waitress very accommodating in terms of being able to give us the bigger table considering our group kept getting bigger. We were the only ones in the back, so the restaurant was quiet but perhaps it was due to the holiday (although the other time I was here it was also quiet). Food and drinks were great for sharing, a bit pricey but worth it as it all tasted great (happy hour has a better deal of course). The only thing that kinda bummed us was the fact we were expecting it to be happy hour, esp since there was a sign up for it, but were told there was none due to the holiday on Monday. Overall, service was attentive, and I would definitely return again and recommend to other people."

  • "I made reservations at 1:45, but wasn't seated until 2:15. Apparently, some customers weren't willing to get leave even though their 2 hours max was over. However, the waitress was really nice and offered a seating at the bar with a complimentary on them for making us wait. We declined because we wanted a more comfortable seating and was seated shortly after. Once seated, we were given't guac and chips on the house for making us wait, which was really generous. I love the friendly staffs and I would definitely come back."

  • "Amazing boozy brunch - loved everything, and definitely among my Top 3 brunch spots in the city. A little disappointing that tables were only for partis of 6 or more. Usually I'd avoid the bar, but in Macondo the bar was fine - great view of the dishes coming out, and each bar section was short enough that it didn't feel like everyone was in your business."

  • "The restaurant was very slow since it was a cold Sunday nigh, we were seated promptly and the wait staff came over right away, which was nice. What wasn't so nice what their lack of respect for personal space or their interest in anything other than getting our order and running back to hang out with the other waiters that we're standing around. We ordered the special, rib eye, and a chicken and rice dish. While the chicken was missing a little salt and flavor, the ribeye was missing everything. The meat tasted old, had no flavor what so ever. The only reason I ate half of it was because I was so hungry. Neither of us finished our meals. The waiter was quick to take our dishes away, not ask how the meal was wanted dessert and drop the check"

  • "This place is great! Food is absolutely delicious and the ambiance is great for a night out with friends or significant other. It's pretty loud, but only because everyone is having fun and laughing. There's spanish/caribbean music playing as well, but you can still carry on a conversation. Prices were fair...three of us shared sangria, one appetizer and three main dishes which with tip came to $34 each. Not bad for NYC! Waiters don't rush you and all staff are very friendly and accommodating. It's also in a great location. Very convenient to train and surrounded by great lounges to go hang out at after you eat. Awesome dinner spot!! I can't wait to go back. The fish tacos and vegetable empanadas are calling my name.."

  • "Just what we want when we go out to eat. Since we cook a lot at home eating out is for food we wither can't do at home or have never thought to do at home. The flavor combinations were just great for us. The Tuna Cocas was excellent. Everything else as well. We would definitely return."

  • "Great food at reasonable prices, service was also great. Only complain is the type of music playing and the level of the music. Had to shout to talk with the friends we were with. Playing Funk music, merenge, and regeton all to loud. When is regeton music for dinner? When is the trend of loud music in NYC restaurants going to a stop."
