As you walk in it has a serene
atmosphere, clean line, tastefully done dining area. I ate with 2 friends and we ordered an appetizer & a couple of rolls. My favorite was the Unagi. I ordered the duck as my entrée and it was absolute delicious - the sauce didn't over power the meat which was a plus & the plating was very pretty. Now for my cons, my friend had to look for parking because there was no valet (on a Sunday) and I wanted to order the Braised Pear for dessert, but was told they ran out of pears the day before. Overall, this is a MUST go to restaurant! My friends and I will be going back soon. You won't be disappointed."

Delicious food delightful
presentations. Trendy decor! This rates right up there with Juno!"

Great upscale sushi place in
Lakeview. Much more than a neighborhood sushi place. Really awesome food and ambience."
Dined on 2/8/2014
We dined this past Saturday night
and they had a Valentine's prix fixe menu. 7 courses for $75 and it included a glass of prosecco- nice touch! My fiance doesn't eat a ton of sushi and so he had the maguro appetizer and the cod entree-- both were excellent. The only problem was the speed of service. He finished his entree when I was only on my 2nd course. The dishes were slow in coming out of the kitchen (the restaurant filled up while we were there). It took over 2 hrs for the 7 small (but very tasty) courses. I probably wouldn't order this involved of a meal again given how long we had to wait for the food, but I will definitely go back because the flavors of the dishes and the quality of the fish was OUTSTANDING!"

Thankfully I had read other
reviews before going here so I wasn't surprised by the exceptionally slow service."
Dined on 2/14/2014
The food was terrific. Innovative
and tasty not your average sushi. A definite must try."
Dined on 2/8/2014
We love Macku and is our number
one restaurant we go to for Sushi. The quality is always fresh, they have an extensive menu of delicious combinations. This is our first time in the Halsted location and loved it there. The restaurant has very elegant/modern beautiful decor. You can have a conversation without shouting. The food is always amazing."

Can get good sushi at many places
but Macku stands out. Ordered 4 course Restaurant Week menu that was actually more than 4 courses, ample volume & delicious flavors, each course different enough to get a taste of the what Macku has to offer. Sushi dishes a notch above others with unusual flavors and additions like mushrooms & truffle oil. Incredible carrot & miso soup. Loved the desert, green tea mousse. I had an early evening reservation on a week day so it was quiet and service excellent. Had an opportunity to chat with employees which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Modern minimalist ambience."

I've been to Macku's prior
location and always had a great meal and great service. This time not so much. Maybe it was because it was restaurant week or because there were two large groups but the meal was very disjointed and our server was a bit out of it. It is a sharing style restaurant expect the tables are so small they could barely accommodate the enormous plates food is served on. Our dinners didn't come out at the same time. Two people had completed their entree when the last person at our table was finally served hers. The food is good and the sushi combination are not typical. I will give it another try, hopefully the service and timing in the kitchen will improve."
Dined on 2/1/2014
Sushi preparations are very
creative and delicious. We have gone for restaurant week and the opening special, both of which were really good deals. The regular menu is somewhat overpriced."
Dined on 1/31/2014
The evening we visited was cold
and snowy outside so the warmth and comfort of the restaurant was all the more welcome. The food was excellent."
Dined on 1/26/2014
the meal which was to celebrate a
friend's landmark birthday. he is a master of combining flavors to elevate into a whole new realm of taste. presentation of each signature is a wonderful surprise. .this new restaurant (former Irwin's) has an expanded menu and is more spacious than the other wonderful Macku on Clybourne. We decided it is our new favorite restaurant. Superb in every way."
Dined on 1/17/2014
This is a wonderful experience .
The food is outstanding the service impeccable and the presentation outstanding. I have been there three times in the past three months and can't wait to get back."
Dined on 1/18/2014
We have been going to Macku on
Clyborn for years. The food is outstanding and the presentation is nothing u see anywhere in the city. The black cod is out of this world. Never have had a bad meal."
Dined on 1/4/2014
This was hands down the best sushi
I have had in the city. Although Macku is not what I would consider to be your everyday takeout sushi location, it is a great place for a night out for great food and drinks. The sushi is amazingly fresh, innovative, and tasty. I am excited we stumbled onto this place and can't wait to visit again."
Dined on 1/4/2014
Macku personally prepared a chef's
tasting for my birthday dinner. Every course was fresh, unique and delicious. The new location on Halsted is perfect for a romantic evening!"
Dined on 12/26/2013
Maku signature has only been open
a short time but soon this will be a hot spot for sushi goodies so run now while you can still get a reservation. The sushi was super fresh and the chef makes amazing combinations of flavors that will keep you wanting more. Our waiter was well informed, friendly and made great suggestions. We will be returning soon for another night of great sushi."
Dined on 12/22/2013
The service and various foods were
wonderful. This is a new, second restaurant for the owner/chef Macku. When you arrive go to the shushi bar and say hello and look at the beautiful ingredients you will be tasting shortly!"
Dined on 12/22/2013
I have never experienced a sushi
restaurant like Macku Signature. The fish was so varied, incredibly fresh and uniquely prepared. I discovered types of sushi I had never heard of. In fact, the chef prepared several rolls just based on our suggestions. From beginning to end, the soup, sushi, dessert were all incredible. I highly recommend this place to any sushi lover looking to elevate their experience."
Dined on 12/14/2013
Food and service were great. I
always love the sushi and soup here. We tried the duck entree and it was sub par, but everything else was delicious. I like the atmosphere in the restaurant, but it was freezing! Uncomfortably cold."
Dined on 12/6/2013
My fiancé and I already loved the
original Macku in Lincoln park, and now we're extremely excited to Macku signature down the street from us in lakeview! The soups as always were to die for, the presentations were beautiful, and the taste combinations were extraordinary."
Dined on 11/22/2013
I took 3 Japanese nationals for
business dinner. At first, they thought the restaurant looked to American to be true Japanese, but when they tried the first dish they were impressed, that impression grew as did my bill. They said this was best Japanese food they have had in US. Also the Jazz vocalist was outstanding. Overall a great place for business dinner with Japanese Nationals."
Dined on 11/20/2013
We go out to dinner quite a bit
(we live in the city) and sushi is one of our favorites. We love Macku and couldn't wait to try Macku Signature. Our meal was simply outstanding and all four of us said it was one of the best meals we have ever had! From service, to presentation to the quality of the fish - unbelievable!"
Dined on 11/15/2013
The food presentation is outdone
by the freshness and taste. Our server was very knowledgable and offered many great suggestions. We were all very happy with what we ordered and will definitely be back!"
Dined on 11/14/2013
The food when we got it was OK,
sometimes really good. The service was awful, very slow. The food is not good enough to overcome the service."
Dined on 11/9/2013
Top quality food and presentation.
A real gem. We'll be back."
Dined on 11/6/2013
Arami, Sushi Dokku, and Katsu rise
above the other neighborhood sushi places in Chicago. Macku Signature joins them. Nearly identical in menu to Macku on Clybourn, MS is a much more beautiful and larger space. We've been three times and cannot wait to return! Give them time to serve your cuisine, there is some real art employed in the preparation here. The entrees are as sophisticated as their roll and sashimi offerings, and their first course offerings are incredible. The white asparagus soup is one of the finest soups I've ever had."
Dined on 11/8/2013
Really pleased with everything we
had. Highly recommend the whole fish presentation for the sashimi. Kanpachi has been one of our favorites for years. Really well done in a variety of ways. Can not wait to be back as we definitely add this to our list of frequented establishments."
Dined on 11/2/2013
I have been a huge fan for years
of Macku's Clybourne outpost, and am thrilled now to have another Macku in Lakewiew. The menu is the same, and the food is still inventive and delicious (asparagus soup remains one of the best things I've ever eaten!), but this new space (formerly Erwin) is, frankly, SO much more comfortable than it's little sister. Light, airy, open, and even a little elegant., with a lovely bar area. Cannot wait to go back. Thank you Macku!!!"

Best place in town for fabulous
food and great jazz a la Elaine Dame"
Dined on 10/15/2013
BE WARNED, the actual menu of
Macku Signature does not match what's currently posted on OpenTable. That is the OLD Vu Sua menu and for some reason it hasn't been updated yet even though the space as been "re-concepted" from Vu Sua to Macku Signature (and it appears that their OpenTable listing is their ONLY online presence). It's too bad, though, because the intriguing, creative, altogether fantastic menu of Vu Sua has been replaced by this standard sushi fare. So, we went in expecting one thing but got another...strike one. But hey, we thought, let's give it a try. But glacially slow, inept service coupled with flavors that never sang nor soared, merely sunk, led to strikes two and three. Lakeview has enough boring sushi. We won't be back."
Dined on 10/6/2013
Too bad the place was not much
busier. I don't see how they can survive without more tables full."
Dined on 8/11/2013
The food is spectacular, but its
pretty dead in there. They should spruce up the outside with lanterns, repaint and get rid of the battleship grey color, and maybe close off the kitchen. But we went and will continue going back for chef Macku's amazing creations."
Dined on 8/11/2013
This new restaurant is doing a lot
right. Seafood intensive fusion menu that is a welcome addition to the Chicago restaurant landscape. Lovely, serene, modern decor. Menu full of at least 3 dinners' worth of things I wanted to try. So what's my reservation about this restaurant? It's pricey, and I left not-quite-full. The dishes I ordered lacked enough textural variety to be satisfying -- in short, I wanted something with more chew or crunch. For this diner, I'd love to see this restaurant either step up a notch to "fine dining"(it's very close) or step down a notch to a more casual, somewhat less expensive "neighborhood gem." Give it a try -- especially on a live jazz night with Elaine Dame. Order a variety of spring rolls."
Dined on 8/10/2013
The food was special. The classic
vietnamese dishes were excellent, and so were the things we'd never heard of. Interesting, quality ingredients, unusual tastes combined with familiar things. Our wine was outstanding, and our waitress very charming. We were surprised to have live entertainment (on Wednesday night) -- a jazz singer with a beautiful voice. My only concern was that the restaurant was almost empty; I hope things pick up and the restaurant stays. We went early with little kids, and that worked out well."
Dined on 8/8/2013
Not for lack of trying....just
missed the mark. Service was excellent, but every dish was over sauced and even with it all lathered on, still lack any unique flavors."
Dined on 8/3/2013
Love this place. Every dish I
ordered were fantastic!"
Dined on 7/21/2013
The place is simple, clean and
inviting; the staff pleasant and helpful. I like the opening between the kitchen and the public...I feel connected with everyone...us eating while the musicians entertain, the chefs happily preparing the ordered food..."
Dined on 7/11/2013
a lovely spot in the old Erwin
(which took over the French L'Escargot (north), and now returning to the French roots with a sort of Japanese-Vietnamese twist that was scrumptious. Innovative presentations of classic dishes, andreally an unlimited variety of ways to enjoy the food from multiple omakase (chef choices) tailored to YOU, or just ordering a la carte from a lovely menu. Wine is fairly to even a bit underpriced for quality now, and desserts are great in themselves. Service is knowledgeable, professional, and added to the meal. cannot wait to return! you should too."
Dined on 7/7/2013
The food was excellent ! Very
unusual food but fantastic!"
