Food was fabulous, plate
presentation was exquisite, and service was top-notch. Glad to have this place in the neighborhood."
Dined on 4/12/2014
Service: Server brought one
incorrect dish then was clumsy about rectifying the problem, completely failed to bring another dish, and recommended one cocktail as not sweet (it was very sweet) while advising that another was even sweeter (it wasn't). Food: We loved Mirai Sushi back in its early days, and hoped to find the same inventive delicious "new style" Japanese at Macku. Not quite. A blue marlin special was gorgeously presented and was quite scrumptious; the individual new style nigiri also were mouth-wateringly good, but the rolls were a bit bland and a kitchen dish - black cod with chocolate miso - was overcomplicated and far less satisfying than some of the chef's old dishes at Mirai (i.e., steamed white fish ginger)."

Yum! Not authentic but pretty much
the closet you can get in THE MID WEST."
Dined on 4/2/2014
We went with a group of four,
unsure of the quality of the dishes, given that lots of trendy Asian fusion places often insult the food of the cultures that they are trying to blend together. The signature dishes at Macku were outstanding. The carrot and sweet potato soups were well balanced and tasty as was the lobster dumpling in a broth. The rolls were flat. Remember! Stick with the signature items and you can't go wrong!"

I have never written a review
featuring on the service at a restaurant, but our waiter was extraordinary, the best I've had anywhere. Not only was he responsive in the usual ways expected for a waiter at an upscale restaurant, but he was also very down to earth, making what would have been a hushed upscale experience into something very relaxing and even fun. His love for the food mainly came through, and his enthusiasm was infectious. He was an excellent guide to ordering, and we enjoyed the more "adventurous" sushi he recommended."
Dined on 3/29/2014
The service was just awful. It
took us a half hour to order (restaurant empty) and when we hadn't gotten our sushi an hour and a half later I lost my patience. The appetizer special was not good, the salad was not fresh, the toro was not good (hard to do!). Everything was disappointing for over $100 of sushi. I came home and ate a balance bar."
Dined on 3/29/2014
Delicious food, not your typical
sushi menu. Service was poor however. We had a reservation but I was asked to wait at bar until my friend arrived. Lost a nice window booth because of that and ended up sitting right in front of the kitchen. The portions were very small, so we had to keep ordering dishes and each time we did, it would take about 20 min to a half hour for our dish to be served. It was a meal that lasted much longer than it should have. The waitress was apologetic but the restaurant wasn't even at capacity."
Dined on 3/20/2014
Macku's signature nigiri, while
pricey, were some of the BEST pieces of sushi I've ever had! The fish was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the toppings that the chef prepared each piece of nigiri with were unexpectedly delicious. Because of the prices, however ($4-10 per piece), one probably would not make a meal of the signature nigiri. That said, Macku's sushi rolls are also quite tasty (and less pricey, making them a more cost-efficient option). Overall, while the sushi is delicious, when you factor in cost, I would have to say that Macku is probably 4 out of 5 stars. Get a Groupon if you can--only then is it TRULY worth it!"

Arrived too close to end of happy
hour. Upon arrival, asked Hostess if it was too late. She seated us and went to ask chef. I entered happy hour in the reservation comments also. Would have been happy to wait at front desk so she could come back to let us know if it was too late and if so we would have left to come back another night for happy hour as being a Monday night we did not want to splurge on dinner. Instead, we waited. The waiter came to take our order and we had to tell him we were waiting to hear if it was too late for happy hour. He went over to her and at this point she came over to let us know yes too late. Which was fine as we should have arrived earlier but situation was not handled well. Regrettably got up and left."

This place is great, the service
is wonderful and waitstaff are knowledgable, food is outstanding. Great place for a date or group."
Dined on 2/20/2014
Consistent with it's Clybourn
location, the menu has very good price points, especially for its entrees. The duck is consistently excellent, the portion is generous enough to be a full entree. This time we tried the crispy cod that was served with chocolate miso and sliced strawberry, which was good when taken together but separately it's a little disparate. Macku is wonderful addition to the neighborhood, the space is open enough for groups, the well edited decor lends itself to a modern feel without being contrived. This is our fourth visit since opening and will be our neighborhood go to for a nice dinner out, approx $60 for two with appetizers, entrees, drinks and tip."

Our waiter recommended that we try
the nigiri and sashimi, he said it was their specialty, and boy was he correct. Talk about a flavor explosion in my mouth. The nigiri we ordered was phenomenal, Tako, Suzuki and Shiro Maguro. In addition, we order some makimono that was also delightful. The ambiance of the place was a plus, very intimate. The staff, also, was something to rave about. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the food and extremely friendly and attentive. I would most definitely recommend this joint."

It's nice to find a sushi place
that is upscale, unique, has a FULL BAR (BYOB is ok once in awhile, but...) and is doing something high-end when it comes to the food - not just covering it all up with sauces and mayo. This place is about SUSHI and while the chef is creative, it's not designed for "the masses". By that, I mean that many places cator to the less "adventerous" sushi eater and they create these crazy maki that you can't even tell there's fish in there because of everything else that's bundled in or the gobs of pretty-colored mayo that supposedly makes it a "foodie" experience. Not. This place is about fish - and quality - and while you will pay more here, you wlil get more. Service is a little slow, but worth the wait. GO!"
Dined on 3/10/2014
Absolutely love Macku. I had only
ever been to the location on Clybourn. I think this location might be new. The chef is here and he does an amazing job. Everything was delicious. Especially the rolls topped with truffle oil!"
Dined on 3/10/2014
Our server was Bianca, she was
pleasant and friendly. Made great recommendation of menu items. We tried out several of the special off-menu items like the Rock Fish (whole fish presentation), Live Uni, and Ishidai, and all were excellent in presentation and taste. Definitely a place for foodies out there and a romantic experience. The green Tea mousse was to die for, I miss it already!"

As you walk in it has a serene
atmosphere, clean line, tastefully done dining area. I ate with 2 friends and we ordered an appetizer & a couple of rolls. My favorite was the Unagi. I ordered the duck as my entrée and it was absolute delicious - the sauce didn't over power the meat which was a plus & the plating was very pretty. Now for my cons, my friend had to look for parking because there was no valet (on a Sunday) and I wanted to order the Braised Pear for dessert, but was told they ran out of pears the day before. Overall, this is a MUST go to restaurant! My friends and I will be going back soon. You won't be disappointed."

Delicious food delightful
presentations. Trendy decor! This rates right up there with Juno!"

Great upscale sushi place in
Lakeview. Much more than a neighborhood sushi place. Really awesome food and ambience."
Dined on 2/8/2014
We dined this past Saturday night
and they had a Valentine's prix fixe menu. 7 courses for $75 and it included a glass of prosecco- nice touch! My fiance doesn't eat a ton of sushi and so he had the maguro appetizer and the cod entree-- both were excellent. The only problem was the speed of service. He finished his entree when I was only on my 2nd course. The dishes were slow in coming out of the kitchen (the restaurant filled up while we were there). It took over 2 hrs for the 7 small (but very tasty) courses. I probably wouldn't order this involved of a meal again given how long we had to wait for the food, but I will definitely go back because the flavors of the dishes and the quality of the fish was OUTSTANDING!"
Dined on 2/15/2014
Thankfully I had read other
reviews before going here so I wasn't surprised by the exceptionally slow service."
Dined on 2/14/2014
The food was terrific. Innovative
and tasty not your average sushi. A definite must try."
Dined on 2/8/2014
We love Macku and is our number
one restaurant we go to for Sushi. The quality is always fresh, they have an extensive menu of delicious combinations. This is our first time in the Halsted location and loved it there. The restaurant has very elegant/modern beautiful decor. You can have a conversation without shouting. The food is always amazing."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Can get good sushi at many places
but Macku stands out. Ordered 4 course Restaurant Week menu that was actually more than 4 courses, ample volume & delicious flavors, each course different enough to get a taste of the what Macku has to offer. Sushi dishes a notch above others with unusual flavors and additions like mushrooms & truffle oil. Incredible carrot & miso soup. Loved the desert, green tea mousse. I had an early evening reservation on a week day so it was quiet and service excellent. Had an opportunity to chat with employees which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Modern minimalist ambience."
Dined on 2/6/2014
I've been to Macku's prior
location and always had a great meal and great service. This time not so much. Maybe it was because it was restaurant week or because there were two large groups but the meal was very disjointed and our server was a bit out of it. It is a sharing style restaurant expect the tables are so small they could barely accommodate the enormous plates food is served on. Our dinners didn't come out at the same time. Two people had completed their entree when the last person at our table was finally served hers. The food is good and the sushi combination are not typical. I will give it another try, hopefully the service and timing in the kitchen will improve."
Dined on 2/1/2014
Sushi preparations are very
creative and delicious. We have gone for restaurant week and the opening special, both of which were really good deals. The regular menu is somewhat overpriced."
Dined on 1/31/2014
The evening we visited was cold
and snowy outside so the warmth and comfort of the restaurant was all the more welcome. The food was excellent."
Dined on 1/26/2014
the meal which was to celebrate a
friend's landmark birthday. he is a master of combining flavors to elevate into a whole new realm of taste. presentation of each signature is a wonderful surprise. .this new restaurant (former Irwin's) has an expanded menu and is more spacious than the other wonderful Macku on Clybourne. We decided it is our new favorite restaurant. Superb in every way."
Dined on 1/17/2014
This is a wonderful experience .
The food is outstanding the service impeccable and the presentation outstanding. I have been there three times in the past three months and can't wait to get back."
Dined on 1/18/2014
We have been going to Macku on
Clyborn for years. The food is outstanding and the presentation is nothing u see anywhere in the city. The black cod is out of this world. Never have had a bad meal."
Dined on 1/4/2014
This was hands down the best sushi
I have had in the city. Although Macku is not what I would consider to be your everyday takeout sushi location, it is a great place for a night out for great food and drinks. The sushi is amazingly fresh, innovative, and tasty. I am excited we stumbled onto this place and can't wait to visit again."
Dined on 1/4/2014
Macku personally prepared a chef's
tasting for my birthday dinner. Every course was fresh, unique and delicious. The new location on Halsted is perfect for a romantic evening!"
Dined on 12/26/2013
Maku signature has only been open
a short time but soon this will be a hot spot for sushi goodies so run now while you can still get a reservation. The sushi was super fresh and the chef makes amazing combinations of flavors that will keep you wanting more. Our waiter was well informed, friendly and made great suggestions. We will be returning soon for another night of great sushi."
Dined on 12/22/2013
The service and various foods were
wonderful. This is a new, second restaurant for the owner/chef Macku. When you arrive go to the shushi bar and say hello and look at the beautiful ingredients you will be tasting shortly!"
Dined on 12/22/2013
I have never experienced a sushi
restaurant like Macku Signature. The fish was so varied, incredibly fresh and uniquely prepared. I discovered types of sushi I had never heard of. In fact, the chef prepared several rolls just based on our suggestions. From beginning to end, the soup, sushi, dessert were all incredible. I highly recommend this place to any sushi lover looking to elevate their experience."
Dined on 12/14/2013
Food and service were great. I
always love the sushi and soup here. We tried the duck entree and it was sub par, but everything else was delicious. I like the atmosphere in the restaurant, but it was freezing! Uncomfortably cold."
Dined on 12/6/2013
My fiancé and I already loved the
original Macku in Lincoln park, and now we're extremely excited to Macku signature down the street from us in lakeview! The soups as always were to die for, the presentations were beautiful, and the taste combinations were extraordinary."
Dined on 11/22/2013
I took 3 Japanese nationals for
business dinner. At first, they thought the restaurant looked to American to be true Japanese, but when they tried the first dish they were impressed, that impression grew as did my bill. They said this was best Japanese food they have had in US. Also the Jazz vocalist was outstanding. Overall a great place for business dinner with Japanese Nationals."
Dined on 11/20/2013
We go out to dinner quite a bit
(we live in the city) and sushi is one of our favorites. We love Macku and couldn't wait to try Macku Signature. Our meal was simply outstanding and all four of us said it was one of the best meals we have ever had! From service, to presentation to the quality of the fish - unbelievable!"
Dined on 11/15/2013
The food presentation is outdone
by the freshness and taste. Our server was very knowledgable and offered many great suggestions. We were all very happy with what we ordered and will definitely be back!"
Dined on 11/14/2013
The food when we got it was OK,
sometimes really good. The service was awful, very slow. The food is not good enough to overcome the service."
