A word from Macello
Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.

Macello was recently rated as the "BEST PIZZA" in Chicago by Chicago Magazine (July 2010)

Will be open for lunch in September 2010!

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Macello. I ordered the fish special, which was fantastic. The wine selection was perfect. A lovely evening."

  • "As usual this place delivers. Mon-Wed 1/2 price wine, Great wood fired authentic pizza, and excellent overall menu. Service was great and even got a complimentary limoncello after dinner drink!"

  • "After visiting Italy a few times and exploring the different regions, we like to visit Macello because the food is so similar to the what we have had in Italy. They really 'get it' in their food preparations, service and presentations. No matter the time between visits, the quality is always consistent."

  • "Go there before a Hawks game. They are fast, friendly and excellent food!!!"

  • "Last weekend was my third time at Macello's and this place just doesn't make the cut for me. Two times, the service was just so abysmal that I wondered if our waiter had been reassigned. Each time, the smoky air near the entrance was overwhelming. The menu is creative and the room is attractive. There is plenty of room between tables, so you don't feel compressed on a busy night. But...the food is average and the service is below average, which translates into a below-average experience overall. With so many great Italian places in the city, I think I've given this one its last chance."

  • "We enjoyed our first visit to Macello. Nice relaxing atmosphere. Had an early dinner before the Bulls game, so don't know what is like when it is crowded. The food was first rate -- nice to see something different than the normal Tuscan food. Lots of great seafood options. Attentive waiter, but he did get two of our dishes wrong. Would have sent them back, but didn't have time since we were on our way to the game. Great reasonably price wine list. Will definitely try them again -- but will make sure the waiter understands exactly what dish we ordered."

  • "I've been here about 5 times in last year and always have excellent prepared dishes and the service is always quick, attentive and knowledgeable. Their specials are prepared by a chef who is on the cutting edge. I have even tried their pizzas from the brick fired ovens and are excellent. Always find a free place to park on Lake st. under the el. Try it, you'll like it."

  • "We've been to Macello several times, and always really enjoyed ourselves. The pasta, pizza, salads, and entrees are delicious, and preparations are unique. Portions are generous and the staff is friendly and helpful."

  • "We had a fantastic dinner here. The menu is great, full of good options for pasta, fish or meat. We all had fish and it was excellent. Great flavor, perfectly cooked and accompanied by sides that gave us all a taste of what we wanted. The Burrata appetizer was a big hit too. The service was excellent and we relaxed there and enjoyed each other's company for a long time. The food came out quickly, yet we never felt rushed. A definite winner."

  • "great ambience, great food. The halibut was excellent and nice choice of pasta's. We didn't eat the pizza but what I saw on other diners table looked and smelled delicious. I will go back to this restaurant again and again."

  • "Took a group here this week before the game. Great place to get together and have some very good food and then a short drive to the United Center."

  • "We picked up my daughter and her college roommate at the train station and wanted to find a place nearby that offered late night hours, relaxing ambiance, and good food. Online investigation pointed me to Macello so I made a reservation. My first reaction when we walked in was that the atmosphere was perfect for just about everyone - not too dark, not too quiet, not too rushed - and we settled in quite comfortably. The food was a surprise as well. We each had different dinners along with a couple of appetizers and everything was outstanding. And although it was a tad pricey, the waiter bringing us complimentary Limoncellos was a nice touch and made us feel that they really appreciated our patronage. We will definitely return."

  • "We came on a Wednesday night, before a show at City Winery (just around the block). Only a few tables were taken, as it was on the early side on a quiet night. The waitstaff was friendly and happy to describe different menu items for us. We enjoyed the food and the ambience very much. I'd like to try the pizza next time, as they feature two wood-burning brick ovens."

  • "My daughter and her fiance lived in the West Loop for a couple of years and explored the restaurants in the neighborhood. Marcello became their "go-to" spot for a quiet dinner with great food and wine. We went with another couple for dinner before a show at the United Center. We found the service excellent, and had a bottle of Barbera for under $30 that was excellent. The pasta with seafood was wonderful. I highly recommend it."

  • "The ambience is wonderful---a cozy yet open place cleverly decorated and unpretentious. The best part for me was the gluten free menu that had 6 or 7 pasta offerings as well as dessert selections. I will definitely come back."

  • "Casual atmosphere, friendly service. In addition to the wonderful pizza, they make an appetizer of broccoli raab, grilled calamari and shrimp which is delicious and enough to share."

  • "Our waiter that we had Gustavo was awesome. We had him the first time we went there and got lucky to have him again this last time. The food has been great both times, always have wine pairings with food. Pick a Primotivo! FYI Mon-Wed its half price off some great wines!"

  • "I wish I had heard of this place years ago. The food is unbelievable! The ingredients are so fresh. Pasta must have been made the same day we went there. Appetizers are fantastic. The off the menu burata and prosciutto is a must have. Parking was easy. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "A group of 4 of us went to Macello's for dinner before a Bull's game last week. The food was very good, but our waiter, Nick was even better! We put Nick through his paces, First, I was distracted and couldn't find the cocktail list or decide on a drink. Nick was able to guide me in the right direction. Then I wasn't paying attention during his specials spiel and made him repeat what he had just said. My friend took over at that point and ordered the Sea Bass but only if it was filleted in the kitchen and she did not recognize it as fish. Then she felt bad about the fish and ordered a salad with shrimp. Then that was out as well and Nick came to the rescue and customized a vegetarian meal for her. Food was great. Nick was outstanding!"

  • "Had a delightful dinner with a friend while visiting Chicago - We were given excellent service, and we shared a few dishes that were delicious."

  • "The decor, with it's exposed brick walls and packing house equipment, is very interesting and the table layout in a large open room with a bar wall is welcoming. The location of the restaurant and the exterior facade of the building provides no clue as to what is behind the front door. The food and food service are more than adequate but the service could be warmer ( the wait staff). The shrimp risoto is outstanding with the Grouper! Will go back!"

  • "I read a lot of good reviews, but I'm not sure I agree. We had a table near the door in the winter draft, the eggplant was tough as was the beef. The presentation of the food was very nice, but it didn't taste as good as it looked. The décor was cool, but I think the chef was having an off-night. We won't go back."

  • "Macello's is wonderful. Their sea bass is the best I have had in Chicago. My husband had the prawns, which were beautifully presented and wonderful. The portions are generous and the service excellent. Definitely a Chicago jewel."

  • "My husband and I ate here on a cold, snowy night and the delicious food and cozy ambiance was just what needed to warm our souls. The service was great and the baby clams and bolognese pasta were outrageously tasty! We will definitely go back and recommend to our friends."

  • "Great for before a City Winery show, not to disparage City Winery's food, but it's hectic in there before a show. Macello's is cozy and cheerful and had good service. Wine is VERY reasonably priced. Had the Braciole which was great, just wish the sauce had a bit more flavor. Simple arugula salad before was delicious and fresh."

  • "Was looking for something new so ventured a little farther west and couldn't have been more pleased. Food was excellent and help was amazing - it struck me that they really worked as a team, were all pleasant and seemed to truly like working at Macello."

  • "We have eaten hear for years and it is one of our go-to favorites. The food is always excellent. The portions are good. And it's reasonably-priced. I love how it focuses on the delicious foods and wines of the Puglia region of Italy. The decor is fun and lively. It's a great place whether you're on a date night, going out with your kids or taking a client to dinner. Joe, the owner, is warm and welcoming. My only complaint is the service can be a bit spotty when the restaurant is busy. But that certainly has not stopped us from returning over and over!"
