A word from Macelleria
As one of the first restaurants to lead the Meatpacking District’s revival, Macelleria has proven itself to be a staple in an ever-changing neighborhood. Owned and operated by Violetta and Sergio Bitici, Macelleria's rustic, Northern Italian cuisine never disappoints. Using only the finest meats and home-made pastas, each visit to Macelleria is like sitting in on a Tuscan grandmother's Sunday dinner. Drop by and you're likely to see Robert DeNiro or Jay-Z dining in the restaurant's wine cellar, constructed in-part using a 16th-century fortress.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful restaurant with great service and really great food."

  • "Booked this pace last minute, and was a little concerned that I could get a table for 5 people at 8pm on a Thursday night (a few hours beforehand). The reviews were nothing to write home about, so my level of expectation was not set high. It was buzzing when we arrived (upstairs, downstairs was empty), and our table was not quite ready, so we got a drink at the bar, which is perfectly fine with me. Loved the cocktails! Service was pretty good too - they brought out a dessert (on the house) with a sparkler for my friend's birthday. Everyone loved their steaks, and my pasta was cooked al dente. Delicious! It had died down by the time we left, so it's not really a late night place, but I would definitely go back."

  • "The restaurant was mediocre at best. It was super crowded and we had a table by the bar, which turned out to be a nightmare. It took the waiter quite a while to get to us, and then rushed us along, especially when we had questions about the menu. My filet mignon was a bit dry, and I asked for medium-rare. Definitely not worth the price you're paying."

  • "This is a great place if you are looking for low key "non-crazy meatpacking" restaurant. If you want to take the family out and enjoy a meal then this is your place. Jean are fine and your parents and children will love it, too. They have a bar but it for really waiting for your table or having a meal. Don't come here thinking this is a night club type place - it is not. Food is tasty and you will have a good evening."

  • "I went with a friend because we saw it on the restaurant week website, could not have been happier with our choice. It's very cute inside with definite charm. We had a 7pm reservation and were seated right away there were only a few couples there. But within 30 minutes it was full. The food was amazing and their wine list was great also. We would not have been able to afford it without the restaurant week prices but I will be saving to come back!"

  • "Great spot with delicious food. Only complaint is that the prices are too high for the proportions that they give. I don't mind spending a lot of money on good quality food.. But I was a bit disappointed when I saw my plate come. Service was fun and cheery and the ambience was upbeat. It's a bit loud but didn't bother me. Feels festive and authentically Italian. I'm from Abruzzo, Italy and definitely felt right at home. I would go back... But won't be for a while.. Will be exploring other Italian restaurants."

  • "Like the look..brick walls, heavy wood, art work befitting a spot in Meatpacking district! Started with white bean soup...not just creamy...whole beans! Then as this is an Italian steakhouse went with the burger...cooked to order, good bun, fries, perfect. Only one dessert offered with RW menu..brownie bites..dusted with powdered sugar, no cream or ice cream...nothing to write about... Service fell off as meal progressed and not that busy..just a larger party which seems to throw places off these days!"

  • "There was nothing here that really struck me as outstanding. The regular menu selection was small. No item called to me. The daily special menu had just one appetizer and just one entree. My date didn't want wine, so I ordered by the glass. I was verbally offered varieties (eg. Cab, Pinot, Chianti) but no list. There were a few times I wondered where our waiter was. Overall the food was fine, just not compelling enough to make us rush back."

  • "Travel to NYC on business about 6 times a year and I am sad I never discovered this resto until now. Would recommend this gem to just about anyone of any age group. We had the ravioli and lasagne and both were delicious and were a perfect illustration of good home Italian cooking. Service was great also. Two thumbs up!"

  • "I go to Macelleria at least 3-4 times a month. I have friends who go 3-4 times a week. The food last night was terrible. The portions were 1/2 their normal size. What is/was really pathetic is that when I said something to the waiter, he was not & apologized but said there was nothing he can do. It comes from the owner/matre'd. He has a reputation of being cheap and nasty. You would think he would take care of his regulars. NEVER! Someone who eats there several times a week you would think he'd but a drink? Someone who eats there several times a month when something is bad or off you would think he'd do something at least change it. We are all just about done here."

  • "I thought the food was delicious, but the service was a little slow. We waited for about 20 minutes just to get a menu and have a waiter come and take our drink order. Definitely a place to go to get good Italian."

  • "Went here for Restaurant Week lunch. I had the caesar salad (good), the burger (fair, a bit bland), and the brownie dessert (fair). Service was excellent and friendly. I had no problems using a Foursquare promotion. The place was nice."

  • "The service was great, food fantastic, and for $5 I even got a hug from the cute coat check woman! (very appropriate)"

  • "What a treat! Small menu , but everything was delicious and we lived the fact that the original elements were left in the restaurant"

  • "Went here on NYE with my wife. I had the wedge salad along with the rib eye steak. My wife had the Calamaretti and the Lasagna for the main course. The Calamaretti was excellent. Unfortunately the wedge salad was not. A wedge should consist of great blue cheese or house mafe dressing with real crumbles.. good fresh pepper and tomatos, with fresh bacon bits.. This salad lacked each.. They need to remove this from there menu immediately or revise as this takes away from how excellent the steak is. Big, juicy, aged well and so tender. I would go back time and time again for the steak alone. It was just that good. Do yourself a favor and try this place and get the rib eye. I would put it up with the best steakhouses in the city."

  • "The food was excellent, but very expensive. Side dishes are charged separately. Service was nice and fast. Perfect for a New Year celebration!"

  • "We had a group of 8 all of whom loved their meals Great service with a smile and lengthy wine list They even took the boys to the 'meat room' so they could select their choice of steak"

  • "We've had a great experience. Delicious food and outstanding service. I could even practice my italian! But the most important thing for us as a family was how kid-friendly their were. They managed to make a special meal for my kid, and it happened to be the best meal he's made since the begging of our vacation trip. Couldn't forget to congratulate the restaurant for the music setlist choice! Certainly going back! Gazie mille!"

  • "become a regular. the owner gives snow in the winter to his regulars that eat there at least 2-3 times a week. however its my understanding he is also that way with everyone. i wish they would sell and there would be new ownership. he is the one that makes the place unwelcoming."

  • "The food was spot on. The butternut ravioli unbelievably great. Porterhouse perfectly cooked. The appetizers were wonderful. Difentlitaly go back."

  • "recently was able to dine at this restaurant. I am from the LA area and happened to be traveling through New York on an International trip. I would like to say that the staff are very friendly and prompt with service. The food was quite excellent as I dined on steak and chicken with some vegetables cooked perfect aldente and the pasta was fresh made. Finished off with a very nice cheese plate. Atmospehere was ok and not overbearing noise factor. I was very glad I could try this restaurant and highly recommend to a discriminating diner. Thanks for the great evening Macelleria!"

  • "I booked macelleria thru open table because my experience thus far has been excellent. The restaurant was disorganized & the staff was rude (except for the hostess who was extremely repentant & nice). The food was C grade at best. The tables were so close together that the waiters hit into my chair at least 40 times throughout the nite & gave ME a hard time about it. I have been there before several times. I will never go back."

  • "The pastas are spot on, made fresh and perfect, a great place to make steak eaters and vegetarians happy with a warm welcoming atmosphere."

  • "Great steak, original atmosphere, but very noisy accustic. Recommanded rather for larger groups (we were only 2). Prices are at the high end, yet acceptable given the good quality."

  • "This was our first time to the meatpacking district and Macelleria's did not disappoint. We shared caprese, with the best balsamic reduction. I had the butternut squash ravioli with amaretto cookie crumbles. Amazing! My friend ordered lasagna bolognese and said the pasta was definitely house-made. We will definitely return on our next trip to the city... The whole area was my favorite in all of NYC."

  • "Couldn't ask for a better place to have a Thanksgiving dinner with my wife. The waiter knew the type of wine we wanted and gave us time to enjoy it before we ordered. Service during the meal was quietly done. Thanksgiving dinner was excellent."

  • "I loved this place. It was perfect for a group brunch, we got a big table, was hassle free and has a brunch menu to please any taste. It had a cozy ambience on what was a very cold winter's day which was nice. Really attractive decor and good location. I would definitely go back, especially if I need to book somewhere for a large brunch. Has a relaxed atmosphere, but not stuffy."

  • "The decor of Macelleria gives the space warmth and gives it a very homy feel. The porterhouse steak was spectacular, every single bite. The service was above and beyond."

  • "Although the lunch menus was not very extensive, the items to choose from seemed very tasty. I had the chicken parm which was delish! And make sure you have dessert!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Macelleria. Food was great... Steaks outstanding. Ravioli was amazing. Clean plates all around. Service was great and our reserved table was ready and waiting for us when we got there. Will be back. Nice wine list. All for a very reasonable price. Fully recommend."

  • "It was a relaxing and romantic atmosphere. The food was good for the most part. The blue point oysters were delicious. The Rib - eye steak should have been a better cut as it was a little tough, but had plenty of flavor. My wife's filet mignon was just perfect. Dessert was also on the mark. I would go back and recommend to a friend but would try something different than the rib - eye."

  • "Great little area, right off a cobble stone street. Old butcher shop with a rustic modern combination. Food is fresh. Service is as Italian as it gets with the servers often Italian speaking first, English second. It's authentic and wonderful with food to be excited to serve your guests (we hosted a party of 6). They were very patient with our visitors requests for specific food and wine choices and we were very grateful as to how accommodating and how special they made our guests feel. I'll return!"

  • "my wife and I loved this place....we sat in the wine cellar downstairs and it was very romantic, upstairs seemed a little more crowded..........food was amazing, service was superb....seemed like every waiter was right from Italy.....loved it.......I don't think it's a real trendy touristy place, which we loved....seemed like a local hot spot and we'll definitely go back....."

  • "Nothing wrong with the restaurant, the atmosphere is very nice but the food was good rather than great (steaks), and in my view too expensive for what it was. My only actual complaint would be that the wine list only lists wines available by the bottle; as I was the only drinker at my table I had to rely on the waiter's recommendations for wines available by the glass; the result was that I wasn't sure what i would get and how much it was going to cost."
