  • "We had a very enjoyable meal here. Service was excellent and the food very good. Well rounded selection for all tastes and well prepared"

  • "This is our third time at MacCallum House. This visit, the duck and daily fish (black cod) were amazing - paired with full wine list that included many local wineries. Ask for corner or window seating to add to the romance."

  • "Great food, great ambiance.. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at MacCallum House. The suit was peaceful with the breakfast waiting to great us at the restaurant, I found myself wishing we had stayed more than one night."

  • "The food was generally ok/good. The Clam Chowder was the highlight. But expect the service to be slow and not great, it is a small town after all, I assume the pool of applicants for service jobs is lacking."

  • "Breakfast all 4 mornings was exceptional. Recommend the eggs benedict. Dinner 2 evenings and on both nights the food was excellent. We recommend the caprese salad - filet and Ahi entrees. Service first night was befitting the prices and ambience. The service level dropped the 2nd night. We will return and would recommend"

  • "Loved everything on the menu. If you go during this summer season (2014) order the clam chowder, light and delicious. Not at all what you'll expect. Also recommend the Fried Chicken big plate and Grilled corn side."

  • "Charming restaurant in Victorian house. Romantic atmosphere w cozy fireplaces. Excellent service. We had Clam Chowder which surprised us with a dozen fresh clams in shells and a light broth. tasty. Salmon and the duck were delicious and cooked perfectly. Try the Praline Taco served with small scoops of their homemade ice cream for dessert. Good wine list. very good meal. Highly recommend."

  • "Lovely brunch. Outdoor garden seating, weather permitting, excellent service, variety of typical breakfast choices done well with flexibility, and a fabulous breakfast burrito. Dinner dishes are well prepared and plentiful, high quality meats, but as many places not a lot of vegetarian options. Wine list is lacking."

  • "For the price, the I expected more from the food. To start, We had Niman Ranch Carpaccio with a pastrami rub. This dish was adequate, but nothing to wow the senses. We also had the duck breast and the scallops. It again was good, but nothing outstanding. I think to substantiate the prices charged for the entrees and food, it needs the wow factor. I was also thrilled when our waiter exchanged our wine glasses for the more open bouquet glasses needed for the red wine we were drinking with dinner but disappointed when they appeared with water drops and clearly had not been wiped dry"

  • "The food was very good but portions were small. We had to order an extra side of potatoes in order to get enough. Bloody Mary's are excellent with fresh tomato juice. They usually only serve breakfast until 11. Because we inquired, we got to have brunch at noon when almost no one was there. We sat on the front porch in the sun and admired the sparkly day with a view of the gorgeous garden, the town and the ocean."

  • "Beautiful historic house. All persons from the host to the servers were wonderful. Pricey menu so we expected more from our dining experience. Food was mediocre. My husband's steak was not a distinguished cut of meat, was not cook to order and was barely warm which is the reason for the 'poor' food rating. All else was fair. The only highlight may have been the souffle special ordered for dessert."

  • "This place has it all for couples - excellent food, scrumptious drinks and very romantic ambience. The food is a great standout - excellent chef!"

  • "Their version of clam chowder was really different and really good more like a cioppino with white broth but it worked.Torta and duck breast were excellent.Desserts were really good too."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Very bad service. Everyone from the host to the waitress seemed rushed and dis-interested. They were "sold out" of their signature dessert, the souffle. That seemed so odd early in the evening The food was not well preparef. There is plenty of good places to eat in Mendocino so we will not be back."

  • "We enjoyed dinner here recently during a visit to Mendocino. They have a nice selection on the menu - not overly creative but all tasty sounding. I enjoyed my beef tenderloin a lot, it was cut it with a fork tender and nice to have something more straightforward after a round of fancier cooking in San Francisco. My husband loved the wild mushroom gnocchi and he had a souffle for desert that he especially liked with the chocolate sauce. There was a nice fire going in the room where we sat. Be advised that they are particular about reservations and won't seat you if you arrive early so as not to get the wait staff and kitchen backed up. The bar is nice and you can drink there while waiting. We will definitely return. Our server was great."

  • "I'm not playing this stupid game of maximum minimum characters for a review. You can't get anything accepted. We are unlikely to return because at these prices our evening fell short of our expectations."

  • "Food was very good although pricey. Very limited menu. Has dinner two nights. First night service was excellent. Second night service was slow and the waitress wasn't very attentive."

  • "Fresh Dungeness Salad, lots of crab, and enough for dinner with the Delicious potato leek soup. Skate wing with crab cake was excellent. Very cozy atmosphere. Cocktails in front of fire in bar area. Huckleberry Cosmo was superior."

  • "The MacCallum House has terrific ambience. We were there in the evening for dinner, and the noise level was fit for both group chatter as well as romantic settings, as the restaurant had various corners adjacent to fireplaces that would serve the purpose well. The service was great! There was a water girl that was very patient with us, even went into the back to speak with the chef when we had a question about the meal we ordered. Our waitress was patient and knowledgeable as well. The manager even came by to see how we were, and took our check so that we wouldn't have to wait to reconcile our bill. Terrific place. Would highly recommend it."

  • "We enjoyed our time at MacCallum House. We were in the bar before dinner and liked the REAL wood fire. Then we moved to the dining room and had delicious food and good service. If we're in Mendocino again, we would return."

  • "Another anniversary dinner on our vacation up to Mendocino. Unfortunately, it isn't what we expected. The hostess nor the server acknowledged my anniversary notes. Our server was new (we've all been there, I'm not mad) but the lady training her was rude in front of us to her. We didn't mind the new server, actually preferred her. We had the duck four ways and it just wasn't good. Also our entrees weren't all that great either. We would have bought another cocktail or 2 and even dessert but we didn't feel that anyone actually cared for our service there and since our bill was already well over $120 dollars, why should we keep spending money? We left and went down the street for another cocktail and dessert elsewhere. We regret going here."

  • "Food and ambience has always been wonderful at this restaurant. Have been dining here every year for our birthday celebrations. Prices have climbed over the years but the food and atmosphere is still the best in Mendocino."

  • "We loved the freshness of the food. Presentation was incredible too."

  • "We have been to the McCallum house many times in the past and enjoyed it immensely. However, the last time we were there (a number of years ago), we didn't find it as good as it had once been. We are very happy to report that the McCallum House is back on top again! We had drinks in the intimate bar beforehand and then we were escorted to our table in the cozy back room, near the window. Our wait person was quite attentive and had an engaging personality as well. The food was outstanding and the presentation was well done. We will definitely be back again."

  • "Really lovely restaurant with great food and good service."

  • "The food or the presentation was not what it used to be 2 years ago when I went there for the first time. I had the duck. That was very good but the presentation was horrible. IT was served with some stuff (Could not tell what it was, because it was all smashed together) The goat cheese that was with it was good, the spinach overcooked. My husband had the pork chops and he said it was very dry. I think in general it was overcooked."

  • "Didn't know what to expect while staying on the Mendocino coast. Very good food and attentive service. Seafood was delicious, well presented with out of the ordinary flavors and the ambiance unique. Glad we stumbled on this place."
    Dined on 9/19/2013
  • "The food was ho-hum and incredibly overpriced. I ordered a pork chop which was slightly overcooked and dry and lacking flavor. Really nothing special. The wait staff was friendly enough and attentive early on in the night, but towards the peak dinner hour they were difficult to flag down for simple requests like the check. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, however. Perhaps this is better as a breakfast/brunch place."
    Dined on 9/4/2013
  • "We had both breakfast and dinner there; both were excellent, especially the dinner as it was less predictable. The restaurant is in a quasi-Victorian building, surrounded by a cottage garden, and within walking distance of the incredible Mendocino headlands. An experience to remember!"

  • "We were guests if the hotel. We had a 6:30 reservation and wanted to change it to 7:00. They said only 8 was available. When we arrived the restaurant was completely empty. We decide to eat on the cafe side Instead because it felt like a ghost town in the restaurant. Very average food with high prices."

  • "My wife and I have eaten at MacCallum House since the 1970s. We ate there several years ago and thought the ambience and charm continued to be wonderful but the quality of the food had slipped. But at our recent visit the food represented the Mendocino coast in fine fashion. The service was very good, professional, friendly and easy-going. The wine list with local wines from the Anderson Valley was excellent representing many small wineries. The best two dishes was the grilled pork chop which was tender and moist with superb grilled flavor and the accompanied vegetables were tasty and nicely cooked. The chocolate decadent browny desert was the best we had in the years. Overall, a very fine Mendocino coast dining experience!"

  • "Certain things McH does very well. Their sauces are superb; the cherry-Cab sauce with lamb chops and sherry-butter sauce with filet. They don't oversalt, which is WONDERFUL. Duck liver pate wasn't super-rich but had lovely intense flavor--excellent! Lavender popover side with lamb was uninteresting; breadbasket was stale. Dessert menu was overpriced diner standards; banana splits and fudge brownies at an expensive restaurant? Ordered the cherry souffle; note it comes with sweet dark chocolate sauce, not bittersweet. Spouse ate it; I dislike sweet dark. Service was a little slow but thorough, always cheerful/friendly. We prefer McH for breakfast; the cook never, ever overcooks the eggs; housemade jams are very fine."

  • "One of the best breakfasts in Northern California! High quality ingredients, like wild mushrooms for a great omelet made correctly ! We made a point of coming here for breakfast even though we were not staying at the hotel."
    Dined on 6/18/2013
  • "Both of us had the Halibut which was outstanding. However some people staying at the same resort told us the next morning they had the lamb and the duck and it was the worst meal they have ever had. I'm not sure about the inconsistency and the resort owner said she had not heard good things about MacCallum House. Never the less our meal was fantastic."

  • "We will not return to this restaurant. Our waiter seemed inconvenienced by our mere presence in his section. We tried to order two different wines but they were out of both. The food was ok but nothing special especially for the price."

  • "Had a great meal there 30 years ago. Similar experience this time for our wedding anniversary."
    Dined on 5/25/2013
  • "while the food was good the wait-staff needs training: reaching in front of diner to pour water; the maitre d' seems to be an errand runner and doesn't know much about the menu or wine list. there are plenty of other places for fine dining in Mendocino..."

  • "Everything was good until our entree came. We took a little long with our appetizers so when the rack of lamb (especially) came, you could see the fat starting to solidify. My husband's sturgeon's sauce had a film over it (sitting too long under the heating lamp in the I think). I insisted having the rack of lamb redone cos of the fat and the meat was over cooked. I had to wait 1/2hr while my husband ate."
