Diner Reviews
  • "The table felt a little small for 4 people and that many plates coming out, but we managed. The food was delicious & interesting. Other tapas places all seem to share the same recipes and combinations, but Macarena shook this up a bit and it worked. The scallops wrapped in bacon were awesome & so were the goat cheese balls. The octopus was reminiscent of a chicken dish, nice subtle flavor and a great chew. The steak skewers were cooked to perfection, but nothing special & the spicy potatoes were excellent. The dessert was awesome as well. The chocolate balls that melted in your mouth were out of this world & the cream puffs we perfect. Their red sangria was good, but it did seem over priced for a carafe. All in all a great meal."

  • "The tapas is great but keep your expectations for service low. We've dined here serveral times and service is fair to poor. The good food keeps us coming back, for now."

  • "Glad they opened a closer locale than Naperville. Best meal I've had in a long time! Not inexpensive but you get what you lay for."

  • "Wanted to love this place. Great decor, creative menu, but they messed up 2 of my all time favorite and basic tapas (garlic potato salad and bacon wrapped dates). Service was adequate at best. Didn't seem to be a manager on the premises or we would have complained. It's all about the details, and we shouldn't have to ask for clean plates and bread/butter refills. The only one on his toes was the gentleman filling the water glasses! Look, it could have been an off night, and I know this location hasn't been open for too long, but with all of the other wonderful restaurants around, I'm not sure whether or not I'd give it a second chance."

  • "We saw a Groupon and decided to try it for a rare date night out without kids. The hostess was less than friendly and after beig seated, we waited a good 10 mins before our server finally came over. At this point it wasn't even busy. The mango lemonade I ordered tasted like a cheap mix and was not palatable. We ordered a series of cold and hot tapas to share. The food came out pretty quickly. The basics were fine (tortilla and olives). I will say the dates and goat cheese croquets were very good. We had two dishes, the plantains and the steak on bread, that were so sub par we took one bite and left the rest. At that point we decided to have dessert elsewhere. Even with the Groupon, our bill was over $50 before tip and weren't drinking."

  • "We are happy that a Spanish tapas restaurant returned to the St. Charles/Geneva area. You have to dine at Macarena's 2 or 3 times to sample all their hot and cold selections. Great margaritas! Salad and seafood choices average."

  • "We came here with a small group. Food was great and service was excellent. Enjoyed a very nice Spanish wine with a variety of Tapas."

  • "This is a great place to try many different Spanish foods all in one meal. Four people makes it easy to sample and not get full too fast. The beef medallions were cooked perfectly and so tender! I would also recommend the flavorful pork medallions, and the garlic shrimp. The only thing lacking is chocolate cake, but the pistachio dessert is good."

  • "My husband and I have been here 3 different time and each time the service, food and sangria has been outstanding!"

  • "This was our first time trying Macarena Tapas and it definitely will not be our last...what a great experience! We went there to celebrate Valentine's Day on Saturday the day after; with an early reservation we were seated easily. Everything was great - the portions were well-sized for trying a lot of different things without being stuffed and everything we had tasted fantastic. Because of how quick the food came out, the pace of the evening was ideal too: when we were done with one, we just picked something else and it was back out in a matter of minutes. We were never rushed and never waiting for food; the perfect combination. The atmosphere was great and it was topped off with excellent service from Alex - great recommendations!"

  • "We love the occasional tapas dinner but found this to be subpar. Bacon-wrapped dated were actually bland and only dipped in honey. The goat cheese/bread dish was actually tasty but served like toppings on Texas toast. Beef was tough. Garlic shrimp was good. But nothing wowwed us in a way that would make us want to come back."

  • "Very small portons. We bought 4 plates for over 40 dollars and were still hungry because the plates were so small. Food was just ok but poor value. The acoustics were also not good as it was difficult to carry on a conversation."

  • "Great service...food came out quick and hot. Server was a young man and he did a nice job. Very attentive. We will be back."

  • "Macarena is a nice addition to the St. Charles food scene. The ambiance was upbeat and pleasant. The staff were friendly. And, most importantly, the food was good. The prices were a bit high for tapas but I'm seeing price increases everywhere I eat. Maybe I need to lower my standards or drink less!? Nah! Life's too short. A great tapas joint will always have a place on my list of go-to dining experiences. Macarena fits that bill for the area."

  • "The restaurant was so loud you couldn't even converse. Service was slow, waiter forgot to order some things. Sat waiting for drinks 10 minutes. The tapas plates came out 10-15 apart. Do not order the meatballs! Chewy, poor quality meat. Finally asked for our last item to go and our check. Had to chase down the waiter to run the credit card. But at least it was expensive!! On a positive note, the garlic potato salad was good"

  • "Try everything on the menu that has goat cheese or comes on crostini, it will be worth it. The place is modest sized and very modern looking but manages to still feel warm and inviting. We will definitely be back."

  • "Chef John did a personal tasting menu for us and everything that we had was wonderful. Lots of great flavors and a nice way to try a lot of different tastes. It will become a new favorite of ours,"

  • "We went on New Years Eve so there was a preselected menu. It was very good but I had my heart set on picking my own food. Just gives us a reason to go back!!"

  • "Food and service were excellent. A bit slow on the Tapas when we first go in... but as the place filled up the tapas came out very quickly."

  • "I went out for dinner on a Sunday night with a group of family and friends, including my 10 year old son. The owners greet us at the door making us feel welcome. The decor is beautiful and the food was amazing. We ate different dishes and they were very good with a great presentation. The service was great and the owners checked on us several times to make sure that everything was ok and we were having a great time. We will definitely come back."

  • "Macarena Tapas was a pleasant surprise. Dined there on a Sunday night so the restaurant was not very crowed but still had a very nice feel. Waiter was very pleasant and asked if we had ever been there before, which we indicated no. Was very helpful in making some suggestions. For a family of 5 we ordered 8 plates and it was more then enough, our waiter also brought us on the house one of his favorites (plantain's) OMG so good. Thought all the dishes were very good. Note: (MOST) only will have 4 bite sized servings. Liked the beef skewers, fried goat cheese, plantains, potato salad the best."

  • "My husband and I decided to try Macarena Tapas and we are so glad that we did! The food and service was wonderful. I had the white sangria which was lovely. We started with the meatballs, bacon wrapped dates and garlic potato salad. All were delicious! We then ordered the plantains and pork medallions which were wrapped in crispy bacon. We loved everything we ordered! Our server was very helpful with suggesting popular dishes. We can't wait to come back!"

  • "The food is good but not great. The servers could be better informed and make recommendations to the patrons. We had a party of 4 and the server did not tell us what items were right for 4 or 3 or 2 people. We had to guess and got it right some of the times and also got it wrong sometimes. An informed server would have been a benefit to the experience. Corkage fee is a plus."

  • "Our server Alex was terrific. He was very well versed in the menu and made some excellent recommendations for our group. We ordered approx. 2 items per person (4 in total) and it was more than enough food for us. I was not a fan of the goat cheese fritters but LOVED all items wrapped in Bacon. Very interesting menu, lots to choose from, moderately priced."

  • "good food, interesting wine list with the wine we picked was good, is difficult to get food out to people with "small orders" requiring many trips to each table and was handled very well. A little "noisy" but not too bad, something like tapestries on some of the walls might help very good experience, will be back and recommended to friends. Also the "tapas meale" allow one to choose how much to eat without wasting a half of a plate of food if not too hungry one nite."

  • "Food is great but make sure you have a reservation & lots of time. Been there twice already and hope to go back again. Hopefully, they will work out their hostess issues and extra chef issues. Don't want to see another great restaurant in this location fail."

  • "Macarena Tapas is excellent! Great food, great staff, and service. They are having their grand opening in 9 days and I plan on going back to try the paella. It is a little higher priced but well worth it. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food is the star at this local tapas joint. There is a vast selection of well-executed dishes. The dining room and service are casual. This is a great place for a celebration. There are only a few choices for cocktails and wine, but this is still a new restaurant. I look forward to see if they build up these selections as there would be many reasons to pair beverages to the wonderful foods!"

  • "The food was good & drinks were good too. The service was good, but the food came out super fast. Not sure if that was a good thing... We felt a little rushed. Towards the end we were asked if we wanted anything else then okay I'll bring the check. We probably would have ordered dessert if the waiter would have marketed them to us. At that point we felt too rushed & just wanted to leave. We felt this place would be perfect for the airport."

  • "I loved that the menu labeled which items were vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options! Portion sizes were good but prices seemed high compared to other tapas places like Cafe Babareeba in Chicago. Overall, the food was just mediocre, and I wish our server would have let us know up front that they were doing a soft opening and none of the entrees were available."

  • "I was familiar with Macarena's in Naperville but the new location goes a step above. The food is outstanding and your tastebuds will thank you after you eat here. The ambience is a latin flair and will continue to get better. My wife and friends from out of town went on their first day open and I would say Macarena's is 90% spot on. This is the best opening I have attended. The food was outstanding, the people are friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere has a subtle energy to it. treat yourself to something good and try something new on the menu."
