A word from Macao Trading Company
Macao Trading Co. covers two floors offering both a spacious dining room upstairs and an intimate lounge downstairs. The cuisine represents the blend of Chinese and Portuguese cuisines found in the once independent colony of its namesake. Located on Church St, at the edge of Tribeca, Macao’s décor is a dramatic composition of lighting, relics and industrial iron work. The high ceilings and tucked away location provide a fitting setting for the restaurant’s 1940s portside warehouse feel, recalling the adventure of Macao’s "red lantern district." Continued

  • "Amazing colonial ambiance, delicious fusion food, great cocktails... You will remember this for a long time!"

  • "Fantastic menu where you can order small plates and share everything if you just know you need to have a bite of everyone else's food. Great birthday dinner, love coming here as always!"

  • "Absolutely love this place. Service is top notch and you get such healthy portions for such quality food."

  • "Too loud to talk, too dark to eat. I don't think I will come back. Food is not exceptional. I hated to be downstairs. I'm claustrophobic."

  • "Now and then we just throw a dart at Open Table to find a spot in a favorite neighborhood.. This one was a bull's eye! Colin, our server, was charming and helpful. The restaurant is unpretentious, as is the "fanfare". But the setting is comfortably rustic; lighting perfect. My husband had the whole crispy fish. LOVED it! I had a spicy prawn and noodle dish, which was exactly what I was wanting. Simple wine list. Nicely priced. We will definitely return."

  • "Loved the food first and foremost. The decorations were nice - had a cool vibe."

  • "I had my doubts, Macao, but you delivered. You actually pulled off great service, and in a gorgeous, detailed space with awesome food -- that's what usually suffers. Well done. *applause"

  • "Macao is a great restaurant. My only complaint is that they often seat me downstairs where the vibe is less vibrant than upstairs and there is no lighting whatsoever. It is very difficult to read the menu and even see the food. I made a reservation (and they do warn you that there is no guarantee you will be seated upstairs) and when we arrived I could see that there were tables for 2 but they still seated us downstairs"

  • "Innovative menu with really exciting tastes and very good food. But the cocktails stand out, even the virgin cocktails were amazing."

  • "The ambiance was very fun, sophisticated, and this is probably a great place for a first date. I ate here with my husband and we had a very relaxed time. I would recommend for a low key evening with good drinks and interesting tapas."

  • "I booked a table for two the morning of Valentine's Day for my boyfriend and me. I am so glad I did, the place is truly fantastic, the ambiance is spot on, one truly feels transported back to the colonial peak of Macao. The service is phenomenal, extremely attentive and polite, both the wait staff and hostess were doting. The food was delicious and unique, you certainly cannot find this cuisine anywhere else in the city, and the drink menu was could stand on its own. The entrees were appropriately sized for the price which is not something you get from trendy restaurants. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fabulous dining experience."

  • "Had a casual dinner with 5 business collegues - and we had a great time. Delicious cocktails, solid wine list. The appetisers were a highlight. We shared 6 of them and ordered 3 mains & sides. Some of the food came out at odd times (like the rice came out 15 minutes after the mains). Service - other than the food timing, was good/friendly. Not over-priced, great vibe. i would definitely go back and recommend to friends."

  • "I have been to Macao twice in that last two months and will definitely be going back! While small, the menu is intriguing and delicious, with a variety of Chinese and Portuguese inspired dishes. The whole crispy fish is a must-have, and I would also highly recommend the char siu ribs and duck breast. Dim lighting and retro Hong Kong decor create a romantic and intimate atmosphere. Make sure to come early or stay after dinner to try one of the 20-odd cocktails at the restaurant bar, which stays crowded and increasingly rowdy late into the night."

  • "I brought my family here for dinner while they were in town. The service and food were both amazing, and ambiance was perfect."

  • "The food is terrific at Macao and the service was also good. The ambience - all dark red lights and old wood, was lovely. Definitely will be back."

  • "Reservation was for 10pm and sat us down past 11pm. Food was great but I think they take on too many reservations that they cannot handle."

  • "We celebrated a friend's birthday at Macao. The ambience is spectacular: we loved the attention to detail in the decor, but it's loud. Service was exceptional throughout from the reception, bartender and table staff. Food was good but not great, so I can't say its for truly crazed foodies like our party. We were indifferent to Ants in Climbing in Tree - the flavors were flat. The Organic African Chicken sounded enticing but we only tasted a nice peanut sauce. However, there were a couple of exceptional dishes: the Red Kale Salad and the Charred Barbecued Pork Ribs. Our favorite dish was the Dark Chocolate Diablo - the dark chocolate cake was balanced with just the right amount of heat from the Thai chili chocolate gelato - Yummy."

  • "8 of us wanted to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and we could not have picked a better place. The service was great, and the food was pheonomenal. Fit for foodies, but has some basic dishes for the less adventurous. Thanks for a great dinner celebration."

  • "We came for a live jazz show and ate several appetizers and drinks. Very pleasant experience, server was great, not a huge fan of the mushroom croquettes - they tasted like deep friend balls of Campbell's mushroom soup. The squid salad was excellent, drunken dragons milk was as enjoyable as everyone says, though I would make it a dessert/end of the night drink as it is thick, creamy and milky... The performers were very entertaining and professional. Great place to spend a few hours, have a few drinks and maybe catch some live music and be able to head out to the next place by 11PM"

  • "From the look of the place,to the mind blowing drinks, to food so amazing any description I try to give won't do it justice. I am so glad I went with 4 friends so I could taste a variety of dishes. We must of tried 1/2 the menu and I cant wait to go back to try the other 1/2. I was truly blown away. The servers were fantastic and I can't wait to go back. Do yourself a favor and make this the next restaurant you go to."

  • "We had a very nice time with my girlfriend here. They ambience is incredible. We feel like we are in an old trading boat, and the place is full of little lights and candles. Plus the food was nice, using Asian cuisine as a basis but then mixed with some other cuisines from around the world. For a romantic dinner, just go!"

  • "Super trendy Tribeca fusion spot. Amazing apps and cocktails. The mushroom croquettes and the Drunken Dragon's Milk are a must! Great mains and desserts, too. Surprisingly not that hard to get a rez, great for groups!"

  • "The food at Macau was a mixed bag. Starters of croquette and octopus were execellent. Mains of noodles and the hake were average - - both were very bland. Side of long beans (snake beans) were cooked perfectly but also could have used a bit more flavour of rice wine or dark vinegar. Overall, Macau did not meet expectations for me."

  • "If you enjoy eating mediocre overpriced food in a club like atmosphere, where you will be seated late, and where your table will be pushed up against the bar so that people are constantly hovering over your table and bumping into you, then this is the place for you!"

  • "My friend and I both had cocktails. I had a Westside which I really liked and she had a drink that was like a spicy bloody mary without the tomato juic that she liked even more. She had the kale salad which was perfect and I loved the chicken dish I ordered. The service was good and the ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant."

  • "Took a friend for a birthday dinner, the food was excellent. The squid was perfect and not gummy, dumplings we're delish, steak was cooked perfectly, and the bacon and shrimp fried rice was very tasty."

  • "Advertized as Portuguese/Chinese fusion the menu is really international, and not as imaginitive as I had hoped. Good but not great. African chicken was delicious but decidedly off-theme..."

  • "I absolutely adored my sojourn to Tribeca from midtown east to experience Macao Trading Company. The location is off the beaten path of the sinfully crowded nightmare that has become Soho and surrounding areas. I LOVED the look of the place as soon as I entered. It was like walking into a forbidden factory or place where naughty things take place. It was perfect. The food was absolutely stupendous! The prices were reasonable and the pace was perfect. Our waitstaff was adorable and very informative. I have not stopped talking about this gem since. Thank you SO much for a lovely time. I selected this restaurant to hopefully impress a lovely friend after not seeing her for over thirty years. It did the trick. Thank you ever so much."

  • "Our group of 6 loved this restaurant, from the imaginative decor to the outstanding food. At the suggestion of our server we shared everything and each bite was better than the last. The wine list had reasonably priced, nice choices. I can't wait to go back."

  • "The decor makes one feel part of pre-war Macao; the food is Portuguese-Chinese. We went early on a Sunday to celebrate a family birthday that included two five-year old twins. We all found dishes we liked: steamed and fried dumplings; ribs; croquettes; fried rice; strip steak; fish. The house-made masaladas arrive warm with a delicious sauce that made the meal even more special!"

  • "Great spot for dinner or late night eats. Drinks are great, try the Gola Lola or the Yellow Fever. Chicken and Pork Belly Dumplings are awesome (make sure you get them deep fried) and the ribs are fall off the bone deliciousness"
