Diner Reviews
  • "M-ST is our favorite brunch in Minnesota. We go almost every week. Everyone should give it a try."

  • "Best place in Twin Cities for brunch, food, ambience, value and service, especially service. No wonder! It's located in the award winning, historic and lovely St Paul Hotel. Our favorite restaurant for brunch for two, four or a small group. The buffet style first course with smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail, fresh fruit and green salad and soup is outstanding! Ditto the various egg offerings, including made to order omelets, the always excellent roast beef with a choice of rare to med rare to med well done, the side dishes which are always tasty with fresh sauteed veggies always available and chicken and/or fish always included. The dessert table offers a selection of mouth watering pastries, mousses, cremes and cakes. We visited 4/06/14"

  • "Just thought at $25 price point was very average quality of good Server was very nice. Ambiance I don't know felt like we were in a church basement having a very simple meal."

  • "The salad bar was good, the prime rib was great. Do not take the Eggs Benedict, they sit out way too long. The service was the worst ever. For the price the experience left us questioning why we chose this venue. The clincher was the bad service. We love the St Paul Grill but will never do brunch at M Street."

  • "We enjoyed our time at the M Street Cafe very much! Thank you!"

  • "Very pleasant breakfast following greeting out of town guests following their arrival by air. Just what we needed - a quiet setting for conversation."

  • "Charming classic ambience in St. Paul Hotel. Less frantic than St. Paul Grille. Comfortable, great lunch spot."

  • "You can't go wrong at M Street - breakfast, lunch and Sunday Brunch are all terrific. Sideboard options for lunch are great. The Fried Egg Sandwich is the best in the universe. The restaurant is relatively quiet, so this is a great place for a business meeting or for conversation. All the quality of the St Paul Grill with reasonable prices and a more intimate atmosphere."

  • "Visited on St. Patrick's Day when the sideboard featured braised corned beef, salmon, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and more! The food was warm and delicious, perfectly prepared."

  • "The M ST Cafe is a downtown gem. Located in the lower level of the historic Saint Paul Hotel, it is a welcoming and sophisticated lunch spot. A bit upscale yet affordable. Great staff - delicious food. You can't go wrong eating here."

  • "We enjoyed lunch at M St. Cafe after a morning concert at the Ordway Theater. The M St. Cafe is just a short walk from the Ordway in the lower level of the St. Paul Hotel, which also houses the St. Paul Grill. There was a variety of lunch offerings, including good salads, sandwhiches and more. We split two offerings: a grilled chicken sandwhich with melted swiss cheese on a pretzel bun and the M St. Chopped Salad. Plus, we each ordered a cup of wild rice soup. All of our choices were delicious. We had intended to split a dessert but did not have room for that. Our server was prompt and made sure our beverages glasses were refilled. An enjoyable lunch."

  • "We made reservations for 10am before the hockey tournament and had a great brunch to get us through the day!"

  • "A chronic issue with this restaurant is the slow service. Each time we come here to eat it takes forever for us to get our food, when there doesn't seem to be any good reason for it. The young man who served water was very polite however."

  • "M Street a Cafe is a convenient downtown St. Paul restaurant in the basement of the St. Paul Hotel. It lacks the foodie vibe of the restaurants that come and go in St. Paul, and it lacks the busy sophistication of the St. Paul Grille upstairs. I like it for both these reasons. It is a comfortable place to have lunch with a friend without breaking your budget. Lunch specials are just the right size, small enough to allow room for one of their $2, two bite desserts. The creme brûlée was delicious. One of my favorite cozy St. Paul experiences."

  • "M Street Cafe offers a wonderful spot for brunch on the LL of the Saint Paul Hotel. Everything from omelets, waffles, prime rib, salmon, fresh fruit and greens to yummy desserts. A perfect spot for brunch lovers!"

  • "The food was good, not one of those crazy buffets with everything under the sun. More focused, with high quality, fresh food. Service was good when we sat down. We had a party of 9. We were surprised that (a) basic beverages such as coffee and tea were an extra charge and (b) that they put an automatic 18% gratuity on the check. If it had been a full service restaurant that would have made sense, but not for a buffet. The St. Paul Hotel is a beautiful, classic place and we're lucky to have it going strong in St. Paul!"

  • "Don't look here for squid-and-peanut butter omelets, or whatever swill they're serving nowadays in hip Minneapolis locales. The M St. Café is a place to go for superb, tasty traditional breakfast and brunch fare. Amazing omelets, benedicts and other egg dishes, pancake concoctions (including lingonberry), and (optional) full brunch lineup."

  • "Had brunch before taking in ice sculptures at Rice Park. Great food and great service. Only disappointment were the Bloody Marys. Plain and bland, not worth the price."

  • "Brought a group from work. We enjoyed ourselves, we requested the check due to several who had to be at a meeting at 1. They were given their checks after asking for them. The server seemed disappointed that our party was not as big as originally planned, but still served us well. The food was great and several with us enjoyed the sideboard."

  • "We like to order off the menu rather than going with the huge brunch buffet. Our waitress seemed pretty busy (all the tables were full and looked like a wedding party in the alcove) so things were a little slower than usual but just gave us time to chat and the food when it arrived was good as always."

  • "We ate breakfast here because it was part of a Bed & Breakfast package for the St. Paul Hotel (where we had stayed the previous night). There was a breakfast buffet (the Sideboard) that was offered, plus a menu. I wish we had ordered from the menu, as the food that we saw on others tables looked much better than what we had. When we got to the buffet, the scrambled eggs dish & fruit dish were empty. My husband ordered cooked-to-order eggs (over easy) and they were crunchy on the edges & overcooked (pet peeve of his). I had cold cereal (see above for reason) and it tasted stale. We had to ask for refills on coffee. They seemed to be understaffed and harried."

  • "First time there. Had a coupon. Excellent food, nice waitperson, reasonable pricing, free parking @ Lawson a definite plus and an incentive to return."

  • "Tucked inside in the lower level of the luxurious St. Paul Hotel, this place is ideal for a special occasion brunch, whether your special occasion is an anniversary, birthday or semi-annual Pamper Me Day. Hand carved prime rib, made to order omelets with all the good ingredients (and more!), a delightful salad bar with truly fresh fruit even in the dead of winter, firmly cooked prawns with a zesty peppered cocktail sauce and a dessert bar worthy of repeat visits even if you are on a diet. The freshly brewed coffee is extraordinary as well, frequently refreshed by attentive staff."

  • "We had an excellent lunch. Some of us chose the soup and salad buffet and some from the menu. The child with us had his own menu. The only negative comment is that I would have liked to have seen a little more choice in the salads. Otherwise, everything was very good."

  • "I'm going to make a point to come here for lunch more often. There was a fabulous array of fruits and salad at the buffet ("sideboard"), and a delicious salmon Wellington entree. It's reasonably priced and in a lovely setting. Thanks !"

  • "The food was excellent, the staff helpful, attentive and most importantly - happy! We were tended to graciously while eating and sampling all the food offerings, which were delicious. I ordered a specialty coffee, excellently prepared, and my companions had mimosas that they found perfect for the festive occasion and in flavor. The decor was lovely and tranquil; we also enjoyed wandering through the lobby upstairs to admire the Christmas decorations, always lovely."

  • "Unaware that for breakfast the location was the basement of the hotel. Would not have chosen. Recommend going on a brunch day."

  • "I appreciated having a choice between the buffet and ordering from the menu since people in our party had different preferences. The food was very good, but the service was not very good. Had to wait to get water. had to wait fro her to take the menu order. Had to wait for plates to be taken away. almost seemed like they were short at least one wait staff. I would return in hopes that the poor service was the exception and not the rule."

  • "I don't normally think about going to the M Street Cafe for lunch, but I will now. It's a perfect place for a business or personal lunch. There was a buffet that had selections that were interesting, healthy, and delicious - not your run of the mill buffet. Service was quick and pleasant."

  • "The Sunday Brunch was good but not amazing. If your looking for a cheaper place go elsewhere. If your looking for a good brunch with an amazing atmosphere this is your place."
    Dined on 11/24/2013
  • "Had a business lunch here. Was great. Got the separate room for our party and it was nice and quiet for good conversation. No problem splitting the bill. We did get back at 1:30 to work - later than we had planned."

  • "Lived In area all my life and have eaten upstairs at the St Paul Grill 30 times but never knew about this little gem. My wife and I were extremely impressed with the food and service."

  • "The lunch buffet is probably the best food you can get for your money in the downtown area. You have a choice of salad, soup, and/or warm dishes. I'm pretty sure the food comes from the same kitchen as the St. Paul Grill. The atmosphere is nice, but not stuffy. This is a good place to have a business lunch where you may have some people in suits and others in jeans. Pricing is very reasonable. Try the lemonade, you'll love it!"
