We were seated in the "library" right by the door on a very cold Saturday evening. The wait staff could only access the room by opening the door which was right next to our table.....on a cold night, it was not only disconcerting but quite uncomfortable. The food and service were good. Our suggestion? Loose that table. Not worth having guests who will likely not return or recommend it to others.

This is a very nice but small restaurant close to the Walnut Street Theater and we decided to try it before a show. The chef recommends three dishes (all are "small plates" and you should take that advice to heart! The portions are small, but tasty. They had some difficulty getting us out on time for our show, even though we told them inadvance and ordered teh "pre-theater dinner". We willlikely try it again, but will not abandon the other restaurants in the area, either.

If you're not looking to stuff your face, and you appreciate well-crafted dishes, this is the place for you. The portions are small, but there's a lot going on in each one. Try the Pre-Theatre Special for a great bargain.

Exotic Mushrooms, homemade gnocchi, short ribs and striped bass. A delicious dinner in a quiet, beautiful dining room allowed my partner and I to have a real date night and catch up with our very busy lives. Our waiter Ryan was attentive, funny and very knowledgeable. This cozy tucked away restaurant near Washington Square is a find and in a lovely garden setting, and even though it was too cold to sit outside, we still liked being able to look out and see the twinkling lights and pretty fall plantings. This place is like no other. Worth going to and enjoying the feeling that you are in another world. Very fair bottled wine prices and exceptional cocktails too!

The menu is VERY limited, and a couple dishes we had [roasted pumpkin soup, gnocchi] were very rich, lots of cream, even without options that would add yet more cream. The steak is outstanding. Wines by the glass unusually superb. Espresso was appropriately hot, good. Passed on some very attractive desserts. First time here -- will definitely be back. Very good experience in a nice setting.

I'm not a big fan of restaurants that try to stuff me or blow me away. The chef at M wants you to have a 4 course meal and portions his food accordingly. I had 4 courses and was very satisfied, but not so stuffed that I didn't relish the meal. I also find that too many chefs try to get too exotic and the average person's tastebuds can't handle the flavors. Yet the chef at M fantastically blended many different flavors to keep my tastebuds dancing but not overwhelming them. And the food was very reasonably priced. Add in some jazz and a well selected (but not exotically expensive) wine list and what an enjoyable evening! I highly recommend M!

I used to walk by M not knowing whether it was a restaurant or a special event venue. Now that my eyes are opened to the fact that it's all of the above I go here as often as possible, even if just to sit at the bar or in the courtyard for an amazing cocktail or two. It was so eye-opening to find out that a lot of the herbs used in the drinks were actually being grown right in the garden! (Try the Rosemary's Baby martini. FABULOUS!!! The scent just envelopes you in serenity!) Top your drink experience with a night of live music & a meal that could constitute as the most delectable artwork that you'll ever eat & you've got yourself a very romantic date night! (I love sitting by the fountain for a romantic date!) You won't regret stopping by!

If you are looking for a large plate meal like your typical chain restaurant serves, M Restaurant is not for you. Portions are moderate to small, but every bite is delectable! My wife and I chose to be adventurous and opted for the Chef's "blind tasting". We were not to be disappointed. We had four expertly crafted gourmet courses. If you enjoy gourmet dining and don't mind small tasting portions, M Restaurant is for you. The pricing is reasonable, atmosphere quaint and for us; it was very quite as we were the only diners at 4pm pre-show meal. Our waiter, Ryan was absolutely completely attentive, had a great personality and provided us with exemplary service. It was a perfect meal!

I brought work colleagues from out of town to M Restaurant in order to show off a 'neighborhood gem' type of restaurant in Philly! We were thrilled. Plenty of room for the group on the patio. The twinkly lights and waterfall sounds were lovely. The food was excellent all around. Everyone enjoyed every course. The service was also excellent. Started raining while we ate dessert but no problem because we were covered! The staff even called us a cab since we didn't want to walk home in the rain. The only tiny complaint I had was that the seats were metal and difficult to maneuver and a bit uncomfortable, but not terribly so. Absolutely recommend this place!

I came here on a Friday night after work with a girlfriend. We shared drinks and appetizers in the courtyard and I loved the relaxed and picturesque ambiance! The staff was very attentive and engaged my friend and I on a professional and personal level. The noise level was perfect for conversation and the food was fresh and prepared well. I would recommend this restaurant for drinks with girlfriends, a romantic date night, or a private event. I had the opportunity to look around the hotel and they have a BEAUTIFUL event space! I wish I knew this place existed when I got married 3 years ago.

Good food. Solid service. The patio was great, and the love jazz really set the mood. The only negative was tht they handed us a menu that had happy hour bar food on it, and it was still happy hour so we decided to get a few of the appitizers to save money. We were told that because we weren't seated in a specific area (3 ft away!) that we could not order those items. To my surprise I noticed the women next to is had ordered off that menu-- and I asked why? His reply: "well she is one of the owners!" As a former restaurant owner, I know that I would always accommodate a guest before myself... And wouldn't have double standards. What a horrible example to set for employees and customers.

I cannot say enough about this place, every time I come I am wowed by the inventive menu items and friendly staff. This past visit I was more looking to have drinks, cheese and listen to jazz and I am thrilled I did so because it gave me a chance to try, sinfully, a couple cocktails. The tomato one was delicious, hot lips was a delight but my goodness the Pickled Veg Martini. - Different - Mouth Watering - Sinful. Cannot wait to go back next time I am in town!

We enjoyed the beautiful garden and the background live jazz - just the right volume and not intrusive. The appetizers we had were very nice - wild mushrooms and corn soup. Thought the second course halibut was dry. The entrees (duck and steak) were both disappointing. I thought the portion sizes for the price of the food was poor. Both the duck, and we like rare duck, and the steak, cooked medium-rare as requested, here stringy and tough. If I went again, I would sit in the lovely garden and order appetizers and a cheese selection, and would skip the entrees entirely.

The food was very good but the portions and price do not warrant a return. It would be a better choice for cocktails and snacks, rather than dinner. Also was disappointed that the bar menu was not available in the garden, especially since the bar area is small and congested and the evening that we dined, the garden was only half full.

We went to celebrate our marriage! Wanted a quiet romantic dinner for this special occasion. The garden was lovely setting right beside the fountain. It was, however, very hot and none of the installed fans were pointed at us. Very uncomfortable. Gluten free choices were minimal. Cheeses were wonderful and nicely presented. My drink seemed a bit light on JD, nothing special at all. I ordered a well done steak, telling our server specifically to ask the chef to prepare the steak well done. ( I know this bugs some chefs). Regardless of my request, the steak came red, not pink, in the middle. Our server and related staff were efficient, friendly, and very well timed.

The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great, the price was high, but expected; the drinks were good, but small. The problem was the food. The mackerel was too fishy, the lamb would have benefited from a chain saw to cut it. I had to change each item with my wife who gamely ate them. Upside? Great place to start a diet.

It remains a mystery to me why people are standing in line to eat at restaurants with curbside seating---shouting over traffic noise and breathing in bus fumes when they could be dining in a romantic 18th century Georgian garden. It's excellent food and service, for people who've outgrown city sidewalk dining.

The restaurant is lovely, the service excellent; the waiter was knowledgeable and candid about the offerings on the menu, and the food delicious; but the M is quite expensive and the dishes are all rather small - our bill was over $80/person with 1 drink each, and though I didn't leave hungry, I was certainly not very full. And if you don't like sushi, don't order fish, as all the fish dishes are served very rare - and the chef will not alter this, even on request. Similarly, I ordered the duck, which the waiter said comes "medium rare," I asked if it could be done medium, was told yes, and it was, at most, medium rare, so my request was ignored or overlooked. In sum, I found M good but overpriced, with a limited menu not to my taste.

Every dish arrives as a small piece of art to enjoy before the first taste. Every dish enticed with an array of lovely and colorful ingredients. Of the eight different plates ordered among us, each was unique, special, and delicious. This was a second visit and it didn't disappoint. While the weather gods provided the evening for al fresco dining this time, the kitchen and staff provided the special experience..Two different red wines proved great choices at very reasonable by the glass prices. Small plate options allow for fantastic variety. Totally our favorite neighborhood place for the best in great and memorable food. Truly a place for ALL seasons!

After a "bad" experience a number of years ago, I said I would never return. However since this restaurant is a short walk we tried it and must say they "really" turned it around. Can only say the food is superb. My hat off to the chef!

  • Under a tent-not really outdoors

M is advertised as dining outdoors under trees with lights & a prix fix menu. Reality: we sat under a tent (with lights) and was told 1) The tent is up all summer for weddings and 2) the chef didn't choose to do prix fix that night". Cheese, appetizers and desert excellent, but the main courses were not as interesting/flavorful. Couldn't really hear jazz music. The noise level inside the tent was higher than expected & 60" round tables are too large for parties of 4 (so hard to hear people at your own table). Although reviews said small portions, I do not agree. Portion size 4oz of meat OK. Smoked gnocchi not too good. First 2 courses & desert excellent. Main courses weak in flavor. Excellent wait staff!

We have a wonderful dining experience at M. The food was great, the service was superb, and dining in the courtyard was wonderfully quiet and peaceful.
