Diner Reviews
  • "All of the food was quite good, except for the smoked gnocchi. That was a dismal failure. It had no taste at all, let alone a smoked taste. I believe it's an experiment that just didn't work. Gnocchi should be soft, light, and simple and there's no need to try to take it to a next level that is just not attainable. I should have known better before ordering."

  • "We spent a lovely evening with friends on M's terrace. Food was good. Portions are relatively small, but our group liked that as it enabled us to try more things (and the waitress gave us a heads up on quantity). The waitress was amazing by the way. Fun, knowledgeable, attentive but never hurried us as we told her that we were catching up with friends we hadn't seen in a while. Gin and Tonic menu was astounding and perfect for a summer night."

  • "A recent dinner at M was a most enjoyable experience. While it was a hot, steamy night, the outdoor patio was still a lovely oasis. Service was first rate with just the right amount of friendliness. Although portions are on the smaller size, two ladies found sharing a first and second course and having their own third course was more than enough food leaving just enough room for dessert. The green salad, wahoo, gnocchi were all delicious with layers of flavors and beautiful presentations. The wine list had a nice selection of wine by the glass with a surprisingly good Pinot Noir for just $6."

  • "Ambiance was good, service was good; however, prices were unreasonably high and the portions were incredibly small."

  • "I go back to this gem over and over. The cheese list is terrific and service is always attentive. I especially love to dine outside on the terrace when weather permits, beautiful historic buildings, lovely garden. great food."

  • "Two requests to confirm reservation, both responded to affirmatively, were irritating. Then we found that the outdoor space was almost empty except for a music ensemble that was too loud. Told there was a "private party" in the inside space, we saw fewer than a dozen men standing at the bar. Food was excellent, but the server asked too often if everything was all right "this far". We got the distinct impression that M would have preferred that we had cancelled upon the second phone call to confirm. This place is a jewel, but it's marketing is sorely in need of refinement. Having dined here before, we got the impression M is more interested in private parties than neighbors."

  • "Small plates seem to be a part of the dining experience and landscape. But even when the food is tasty and presentation is nice and the atmostphere and service are good, the small plate thing seems to be an exercise in pretentiousness. We did enjoy the place overall, and as a restaurant used to mark a special occaision it was very nice. I am glad we celebrated our anniversary there, but I do not know when I will go back."

  • "We love to visit in warm weather. The garden is open. There is live jazz at certain times. It is very pretty outside with all the leaves moving in the breeze. The food is wonderful. Portions are not large, so if you have a large appetite, you order more courses. Everything is presented very artfully. This restaurant uses local foods."

  • "We went for the first time on a warm, breezy June evening. Entering the garden, one could forget the city noise, and enjoy a conversation over small plates of delicious and picturesque preparations. Small blue flowers and a delicate cauliflower floret in a bowel rimmed with black appeared as a tiny garden before creamy pale green soup flowed over all. Magical. But the highlight was our gracious server and manager providing such gentle service recovery over a mistake -- ours-- on the cheque. Priceless. "

  • "Great food should not come in a serving size fit for King Kong: no debate there. But a $17 Third Course of pasta should be more than a few mouthfuls. What I had was delectable, and the setting was lovely (enclosed brick courtyard, twinkly lights, white linens), the service bright, attentive. But a glass of wine and 6 bites pasta (no bread or salad) came to $40 a piece. I left insulted. And hungry. So if you enjoy good food, have money to burn, and don't work out, this is the place for you. "

  • "My fiancé and I went this past Wednesday night; weather was beautiful and we wanted to eat outside somewhere... It was apparently the first night of Center City sips, so went around 6 to take advantage of that opportunity and chat for a little while before ordering a full meal. Our waitress... LITERALLY first words out of her mouth after greeting us, "Ya know, Sips people are just the worst!... Ordering only the cheapest things on the menu and getting their $5 drinks... expecting the same service as everyone else who really came to eat..." This rant went on a little while longer. I was really looking forward to the shrimp pico de gallo! Since we now we felt quite stupid, finished our glasses of wine and assorted cheese plate and got out. "

  • "We were disappointed. Servings looked attractive enough but lacked severely in flavor and substance. After four courses we left hungry, feeling ripped off. We ate upon arrival home just to satisfy."

  • "While they were great with my kids, clearly this is a foodie place. Ingredients were all quality and local. The cheese plate offering was fabulous. Both my meal and my husband's entrees were fabulous. I love the way they have smaller plates so you can choose to sample many things. The Chinese Sausage, Fried egg and arugula dish was my favorite. Go to this place if you have an open and wide pallet."

  • "Very nice outdoor dining, a haven from the cities hustle and bustle, with a nice touch of colonial history. The food was very good, and the service courteous and pleasant. However, do not go hungry, the portions are very small, actually minuscule, while the prices are robust. For example, an order of white asparagus, which was priced at $15.00, arrived at the table, one seven inch stalk, nicely prepared but very lonely. "

  • "We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary at M Restaurant. Had a delicious 3 course dinner and dessert. We ate outdoors in a lovely garden and the service was excellent. Our waiter explained all the menu items to us and made great recommendations. We had a wonderful evening and would definitely return."

  • "We enjoyed the $45 tasting menu. The food was tasty and of good quality but not gourmet. We had four courses including dessert. Two of the courses were fish--salmon and moon fish. Both were good but I would have preferred one course to be something other than fish. Service was good."

  • "While the inside restaurant and bar are cozy and quite elegant, do try to eat outside if the weather allows. The outdoor courtyard is lovely, surrounded by ivy covered walls and the windows of the attached historic hotel. The bushes and trees are nicely lit with small lights and there's the sound of a waterfall in the back and a jazz guitarist in the front to muffle the conversation of nearby diners. The wine list is notable and the service was excellent. The menu was rather limited, comprised of small courses with some very interesting and unusual pairings. It may just have been my selections, but I didn't find the food very remarkable. That said, I would definitely recommend the restaurant, but I'll check the menu before returning. "

  • "First time to M, Very easy reasonable parking across the street. Historic well kept beautifully landscaped and tastefully decorated property. We arrived early and had a drink at the bar. Not crowded, very friendly , notable french wine list. My wife had a Bordeaux and I had a martini which was prepared perfectly. Table seating was simple but elegant. Menu was original , interesting and contained vegetables I have have never had before. Fresh baked bread was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed all courses. Wait staff was very good. First impression was excellent and will return. Over all experience was a very pleasant and enjoyable Saturday night."

  • "I would highly recommend this wonderful restaurant to everyone, foodie or not! The ambiance is great, can't wait to eat outside, and the menu small but delicious. Servers were knowledgeable and attentive. Drink and wine menu were also very good. Can't wait to go back! "

  • "The food was amazing! I enjoyed every dish I had with good wines. Also, the service was amazing. I truly felt welcome at the restaurant and got great suggestions for food. I would love to come back to the restaurant every time when I am in Philly because I want to try every dish on the menu. I know the menu is updated with new and creative dishes. That makes me feel even more excited about coming back to the restaurant. Next time, I would love to try a good drink from the bar at first. Anyway, I had a wonderful experience at M Restaurant at the Morris House, and I look forward to come back again!"

  • "Started with delicious house-infused cherry vanilla manhattan. Decided to go ala carte since there were so many interesting, fresh dishes on the menu vs. the chef's tasting. Either way I would have been happy. Mozz balloon is terrific - large and inventive. Service is friendly, and they really move to make everyone happy. I look forward to my next meal at M."

  • "M is a terrific place for a pre-theater meal. The dishes are elegant without being fussy or overpriced. The menu changes frequently so there is always something new and seasonal to try. At this visit, as always, our waiter was fully knowledgeable about the menu and able to make some excellent wine pairing suggestions. The staff was attentive to our theater schedule so there was never a concern about running late. "

  • "My best friend and I do monthly outings to places we've never been. This was a great surprise to me as this was the restuarant by friend chose. I had a few drinks at the bar, including the Cranberry Cosmo which was GREAT! We chose to have the 3 for $15 appitizers. I had the curry soup, chicken wings, popcorn shrimp and oxtail. It was all very good. We would've tried the 4 course meal but since the dishes were already chosen we decided not to. Overall this was a great experience. Plenty of parking, of course you have to pay given the part of the city it's in. It's ashame it rained, because I wouldv'e loved to sit outside in the patio area."

  • "I came here on a Sunday evening with my mom and dad for my mom's birthday and it was one of the best experiences I've had in this city. Wishing I could remember our waiter's name- he was so attentive, very sweet and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the Morris Hotel itself. We did the blind tasting, which was 4 courses which were not on the regular menu and we were anything but letdown. The flavors were so well developed and really stood out. We had chicken fricassee, roasted goat, oxtail & duck and a fantastic creme fraiche ice cream with graham crumbles. Also, the cocktails were the best I've had to date."

  • "Our waiter was very knowledge, the wait staff forgot where they were working. When the server presented our food to us, she continually said," Eat Up". Not what we would expect at a fine dining restaurant. Then, the wait staff removed our plates without asking if we were finished. Food was beautifully presented, however the duck was dry. Perhaps some sauce would help. "M," not what I expected!"

  • "First time at 'M.' The food was delicious - our server recommended a few items as we weren't sure about the amounts and the ordering. There several choices for a variety of pallets. We eat on the healthy side, low fat veggi - fish etcetera. I ordered the scallop - yep, one per serving - but it was so good- beets & Salmon . Small but satusfying! Wine was good too. I recommend you go to, 'M'- too chilly to eat outside but I will be back to experience that!"
