Diner Reviews
  • "When we arrived, the restaurant was almost empty and the hostess was totally uninterested in the fact that we had reservations. We ordered appetizers to share and main courses. The appetizers arrived quickly. The shrimp were very good, but the Korean ribs were tough. Before we were half finished with the appetizers, the waitress appeared with our main courses and attempted to leave them on a table next to ours. We asked that they be taken back, since we weren't ready for them. The food was placed on a service area near the kitchen. Bowls were placed over the rice. Eventually they disappeared, but were redelivered to our table lukewarm. Only green tea cheesecake and unappetizing cupcakes available for dessert."

  • "I believe this to be one of the top restaurants in Columbia. The Thai shrimp basil, pork belly, and M style fried rice were delicious. The service was appropriate, and the wine list was also acceptable. Definitely plan to rturn as there are several dishes on the menu I want to try."

  • "Our group of 6 ladies was provided with extra special attention- from advice about wine to expertly cooked dishes to special dessert options and accurate and fast check out! We will be back! Thank you!"

  • "Don't know why I was surprised, but the sushi here was quite good. Some were better than others, but a new twist was the fruit sushi. Almost like a dessert, it was a typical sushi roll, but with avocado, cream cheese, mango and strawberry on a "bed" of honey. Could have done with less if the cream cheese (overwhelmed the honey), but ended up bring my favorite. Sake selection is adequate; needs a daiginjo option. Service very capable and accommodating."

  • "The food was excellent especially the sea weed salad, and Korean BBQ rib entrées. The main courses were also very good a scallops dish and a new take on Peking duck. ( a fajita twist) We didn't particularly enjoy the brown rice, but that may be a taste thing. The sorbet for desert was excellent also."

  • "My husband and I had a surprise opportunity for a date night and we chose to try M Grille for the first time. From beginning to end the experience was great. Food was fantastic and service was perfect. We will be back try out more of the interesting menu options soon."

  • "We had good food, good portions, but the service was lacking. We had a group of 7 people. He spoke quietly and the restaurant was very loud, so we had a difficult time communicating - also he could not answer basic menu questions. Some items were misunderstood, other orders were delayed. One of the appetizers came out with the entrees. It was kind of a mess in terms of service. Not sure if he was overwhelmed or just new. He was apologetic for the delays and brought the table a couple of salads on-the-house to share for the table, but did not clearly communicate what they were or who they were for, so the gesture was a bit lost on our group. It was still an enjoyable meal, but diminished by the amateur waiter."

  • "Arrived 10 minutes before our reservation, no where to sit to wait. Bar was full, but it was Valentines, so understandable. Had to stand in a corner to wait for our table. Server really did not engage us during the wait, but we were seated within 10 minutes of reservation time, which was fine. The seating is very close, I.E. you either become friends with the people beside you, or you must stare directly ahead. Couples were seated within two feet on either side of us. Our sever did a good job, he brought out our drinks promptly. The steaks were not very good, both of ours were full of fat. I have had better cuts of meat from the grocery store. I guess I should have known better than to order steak at an Asian Restaurant!"

  • "I was a little late in making Valentine's Day plans this year but I found that M Grille had an availability for 10:15. I was excited because my gf & I had been wanting to try this place & we dont mind eating late. The second we sat down, the guy who filled our drinks told us to hurry up & order b/c they were closing in 15 min. The server told us we could stay & she could tell the cooks to stay for 2 more & we could be there while they clean. The staff complained about OpenTable, which has always worked for me in the past & was how I planned my night. I have never felt so immediately uncomfortable at a restaurant. We left & will not be returning. Either dont list that time available or dont act like a paying customer on V-Day is a big hassle"

  • "My food seemed to be well-cooked, but it was cold by the time I got. My wife's scallops didn't taste fresh. The server didn't charge us for the meal, so that helped some."

  • "I was very impressed with this meal. The atmosphere was more of a crisp, modern decor. The food was well prepared. The Baby back ribs were nicely seasoned. The crispy pork belly was also worthy. I liked the Peking Duck as an appetizer. It is flavored as a Moo Shoo duck would be with hoison sauce. Finally, the Za Jan noodle is recommended. Only complaint is lack of espresso at end of meal. We did not have desert so cannot comment on that course. I am very pleased to find this restaurant and plan to return."

  • "We felt well taken care of and special requests were quickly responded to. Took a little too long for the main course to get to the table. Very delicious once we were eating."

  • "We only ate sushi and I was VERY unimpressed. I usually like ALL food.. and dont usually complain. But this sushi was MUSHY, flavor-less, and just a BIG disappointment altogether. We got 3 rolls, plus 2 glasses of wine each (2 people) and our bill was $100--not too bad for sushi and wine; HOWEVER--no one likes spending any money of that sort for poor quality food. I can not comment on any of their dinner entree options (other than sushi). Our server (girl in college at USC; brown hair) was AMAZING! She is so friendly, patient and helpful! I hate to write a bad food review but the service is exceptional!"

  • "This new entry onto the Columbia food scene had a lot of (self-generated) fanfare, so I was excited to try it. The results were disappointing. Dishes were over sauced. The ribs were chewy almost to the point of inedible. Service was fine but not great. Definitely not the crown jewel of the Miyo's chain that I had hoped for and been led to expect."

  • "M Grille is a wonderful addition to the M* restaurants in Columbia! This is our favorite of all the M* restaurants (we've been to them all): clean and open atomosphere with upscale decor and excellent service. The food is exceptional - we had fairly standard items, but all were great: edamame for appetizer, and 3 different sushi rolls - a California roll, the Prosperity roll, and Blossom roll - all excellent. We've had the M Grille Signature roll which is also very good. This is our favorite Asian restaurant in Columbia, and we'll be frequent visitors in the future."

  • "This was our second time at M Grille and let me start by saying we will return again. Overall the food is very, very good. Our chicken was a little over cooked this time but we discussed it with owner who is the nicest lady. She is always concerned that her guests are happy with the food, service, etc. I would recommend a different wine glass for white wine and any other wine that is chilled. The wine glasses do not have stems so the chilled wine becomes warm quicker when you repeatedly pick the glass up and drink from it. Also our waiter poured a little over half the bottle into just 2 glasses before I said something to him."

  • "Michelle has a real winner if she can orchestrate better. All 5 people loved the food. Regarding service, they did not have our reservation made thru open table and the server completely forgot one lunch ! The lunch arrived 5-6 minutes after everyone else's . This is the second time when an incomplete order was delivered to my table at M Grille."

  • "My colleague and I come to Columbia several times a year for business, and we try out restaurants for our evening meal. M Grille was reviewed quite positively on Open Table, so we figured it was a good bet. It was a good bet, but not as stellar as we had anticipated. The service was outstanding; the food was fine (I love seaweed salad and theirs was very good). The décor is sleek modern Asian influenced, so the surroundings were attractive. All of this was fine, but the sound level ruined the dining experience. Although we had no problem hearing one another at our small table, ambient noise and too-loud vocal music detracted notably from the experience. With all of the great restaurants in Columbia, we probably will not return to M Grille."

  • "When we dined about a month or so ago the restaurant was still working with the new staff. The owner was on site and the minute she realized we had not been attended to she was all over the situation. She really cares and wants her guests to be happy and this means a lot to us. Once the drinks and food started coming everything was wonderful. Cute little place and we will definitely return soon."

  • "My fiancé and I loved the sushi there. It is deliciously fresh. While the menu does not have as much selection as other Miyo's locations, M Grille has a more special, exclusive feel to it. there is not a huge selection of anything on the menu, but everything I tried on the menu was delicious. They also had good Happy Hour Specials."

  • "After several disappointing experiences at other restaurants, we've finally found a restaurant in Columbia we will return to. Both of us are vegetarians who occasionally eat some fish and this is a great place for us. (It also has lots of options for meat eaters!). The food is fresh and tasty and the presentations are elegant and simple - like the decor. We ate early having a show to go to so it was quiet when we arrived but was picking up before we left. The prices are reasonable, owner (manager?) was very welcoming and gracious. Overall a pleasant experience."

  • "We brought a group of USC kids to M Grille. We were not sure who would show up and the hostess was very accommodating. We ordered appetizers including the edamame, rock shrimp and chicken wings and all were good. We also ordered five different rolls, all were good . The fruit sushi was different. We also ordered the Shrimp Thai Basil and Honey Brined Southern Chicken to share. By the descriptions, both looked to be different but both dishes tasted exactly the same being dressed with the same red curry sauce. The fried chicken crust got mushy in the thick sauce but the shrimp held up fine. I wish our server told us the dishes were very similar and suggested something more different. We would definitely go again, just order sushi."

  • "Excellent food in a well designed and tastefully decorated space. The open kitchen allows diners to watch the smoothly-functioning team of chefs preparing the delicious dishes. The crispy pork belly, tuna carpaccio, and tempura rock shrimp appetizers are excellent, as are entrees like the jumbo shrimp Thai basil and the seared diver scallops. The lobster salad is delicately balanced and very refreshing. Can't wait to try the sushi on our next visit. Each new restaurant Michelle Wang opens seems to be better than the last. M Grille is the best yet!"

  • "This makes the 3rd time I've dined at M Grille. The main reason I'm hooked is this food is delicious and also healthy. I've joined the clean eating bandwagon & that is a hard wagon to stay on, especially in Columbia, SC! There are plenty of great options for me, as well as, traditional favorites that are found at the some of the other M establishments. We were celebrating a birthday this past Friday & the whole group enjoyed their entrees and had a great time. Only downside this go round was our server. He was good enough, but needs a little work. I'm thinking he must have been newer & a few more weeks, he should be up to speed!"

  • "It's like they were trying to be an upscale bistro, but the food missed the mark. Coming from a city with lots of internationally rated chefs with Michelin star restaurants, it felt like a poorly done knock off. Sorry for the rough feedback, but it was just disappointing for the price. I will say, however, the service was outstanding."

  • "The food and service was very good. I had the Honey Berry sushi and a salad. My wife had the crab cake, sweet potatoes and asparagus. Our waitress was new but very helpful, friendly and sweet. Something was missing as far as the atmosphere, I don't know how to explain it, but it seemed cool. The place seems perfect as a local dining place, but maybe because it's new, it doesn't quite have the crowd it needs to make it feel as such."
