Diner Reviews
  • "Perfect local gem. Excellent service. Our waiter was knowledgable, helpful and charming. Food was excellent. Great experience all around. We dined early and it was relatively quiet."

  • "We live around the corner and Lupa has been one of our favorites for years. We went for quick lunch but unfortunately we chose the Restaurants Week menu and it was definitely sub-par. For example the marinated summer squash was just a few slices sprinkled with vinegar; my wife's dessert (ricotta with honey and berries) looked like something put together from leftovers. The main courses (pork chop and fettucine with veal ragu) were just OK and portions were decidedly on the small side. It may be just the Restaurants Week but the food was not what we expect when we go to Lupa."

  • "Had a wonderful lunch during restaurant week. Every dish was fantastic. In particular the entrees of branzino and homemade pasta with veal ragu were amazing. Service was attentive but not over whelming, two of my guests were under 8 and the staff was generous and kind to them, which is always a plus."

  • "Have been here before, and always love the wonderful presentations and incredible flavors of everything I've had. It's not cheap, but it is quality!"

  • "I have been to Lupa several times in the past 6 months. Usually the food is very good, and the service and ambiance are wonderful. This last time was different, and I hope it was just an off night. Dishes I love are: Cacio e pepe, spaghetti pomodoro, spaghetti carbonara and the orechiette. Last night I had the special pasta (a kind of rigatoni with pork ragu) which would have been delicious but it was so salty it was hard to eat. Then, the artichoke appetizer was so salty I could not really eat it. But in addition, they did not sufficiently peel the artichokes so the fried outer leaves were impossible to chew. Very embarrassing while eating with someone and trying not to let them notice! Too Much Salt!!"

  • "Incredible food, great service! Everything about Lupa was great. All in our party enjoyed every item from starters through dessert. Highly recommended."

  • "Loved our lunch at Lupa, especially thr fettuccine with veal ragu which was one of the most perfect pastas I've ever enjoyed. Can't wait to go back and try the pasta tasting menu!"

  • "absolutely divine! visiting from la and got lucky to hit restaurant week. LUPA lunch: linguini w/veal ragu won our hearts, branzino moist & grilled just right! chocolate hazelnut gelato, simply heavenly! thanks victoria & cari for the ice to save my chocolates from melting in 90 degree weather & going beyond the call of duty! xo"

  • "Lupa is simply one of the best restaurants in NYC. Our server Samantha knows the menu inside and out, and recommended the special Wild Boar Ravioli. We already had decided on the Bavette Cacio E Pepe. Our antipasti was Spinach Salad with Warm Pancetta. Everything was absolutely superb! Our Sommelier helped us to choose an excellent wine. We even made room for the Hazelnut Tartuffo! What a perfect dining experience!"

  • "Outstanding service and top notch food. Just wish if patrons decide to take a 2 year old they keep him happy without encouraging noisy play. The rest of us would prefer to dine without the noise."

  • "We have been coming to Lupa for years and are never disappointed no matter the occasion! It is always a special treat to dine hear and have so much fabulous food. The service is outstanding every single time as is the quality of the food. Besides that, it's a FUN place to eat because it is such a relaxing environment in a cute neighborhood!"

  • "Luca serves impeccable food and is consistent in doing so! I live in LA and make it a point to put Luca on my "go to" restaurants to dine at, when I am in NY!"

  • "It's hard not to be delighted by the specials, the regular menu offerings, any of the outstanding pastas, a deep wine list and an imaginative array of desserts. Lupa really has something for everyone - from fish to pork, short ribs to calamari, duck and pork to vegetarian options if you prefer. Even when we try something new, it becomes our "old" favorite. It's unpretentious and seriously excellent at what it does."

  • "I've been to Lupa many times, and my most recent visit was disappointing. Our two appetizers and our contorno were lackluster compared to visits past. Perhaps our mistake was that we opted for more veggies and got only one pasta dish, the very simple bavette cacio e pepe, which was good as always, but I come to Lupa for more than good. The only two stand-out components were the great drinks (a summer-perfect cocktail and great glass of wine) and our stellar service. Next time I need a Batali fix, I'll head to Casa Mono which, as of my meal last week, was still top-notch."

  • "First time to Lupa. My wife and I were in town for a long weekend and decided to try Lupa based a recommendation from a relative. We dined in the rear dining room. I had the quail and it was excellent! I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a taste for quail. The service was excellent, as was the atmosphere. I really can't think of one negative about our evening there. I will definitely return the next time I am in NYC."

  • "I'm never disappointed when I eat at Lupa. The ingredients are always fresh and of the highest quality and then what they do with them is...... so yummy and simple yet complex. A real treat and a comfortable place to enjoy it. Wish it were easier to get a table, especially since it's in my hood."

  • "Had dinner here with a good friend and, as always, the food is amazing! We had the artichokes and the spinach salad as appetizers and both were yummy with a decent portion. We decided to just have pasta for dinner - it was also delicious but be warned the portions are small in the traditional primi pati sense. We did not have a "second course" as, for us, this was sufficient enough quantity. We shared the apricot copetta and, even if you are not a fan of apricots, it is a good choice. The ambience reminds me of a traditional osteria and that added to the enjoyment of the meal."

  • "wanted to take a friend who hadn't been to NYC in a long time somewhere nice. Food is great as is the wine But it was too noisy. Had to keep leaning over the table. But would most certainly go again."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful meal in the true Roman style. Excellent Carbonara and the spinach and warm pancetta salad was wonderful. Only quibble was the way the saltimbocca was presented - not my recollection of the traditional meal? We were a table of six people who had all lived and worked together in Rome in past years and were looking to revive memories."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "The food and service are outstanding. There are few options that are simple Italian fare. Most selections are for people who want more gourmet versions of the standard dishes."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "We dined at Lupa for a Sunday lunch. Ambiance was great and the service was fine. The big disappointment was the portion size vs price. I do realize that this is NYC, but the food cost for a carbonara is around $3.00; menu price is $16.00. The portions are small making it almost necessary to order at least two items to equate a satisfying meal. I am from Rome and an osteria a place where you can eat a simple meal for a decent price. Our tab was $200 and we left hungry. Aside from this, however, the experience was enjoyable."

  • "The food was fantastic. The noise level was high, but not so high that you couldn't talk. The tables were very close. So we ended up chatting with the couple at the next table who were visiting New York."

  • "italian food can get really repetitive, especially if you are italian! the menu at lupa was diverse, and allowed us a selection of meals we were intrigued with. everyone at our table loved their dish. we had the market fish, the octopus, the skirt steak & the veal. simple. delicious. would definitely come back."

  • "My wife and I had the Roman taster, and every dish was just about perfect. My six-year-old son was able to get some pasta, which he rated second to mine. The food, the alt-80s music and the honest, straight-forward service were a delight."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "I dined at Lupa with a friend and we both thought it was fantastic! We shared the calamari appetizer as well as the orchiette pasta and gnocchi. We then finished with the pana cotta. All was amazing and we loved every bite!!! Service was attentive. The space is small and it was loud once the place filled up - but many NYC restaurants are the same way. We will definitely be back to Lupa in the future."

  • "It was so wonderful we actually went two nights in a row... Crazy I know, but the gnocchi was devine and the cacio pepe was the best I've every had... Loved our food & service ... Go Mario!"

  • "Two words and reason enough to go, although all of their food is superb. Rustic Roman food with a well curated wine list."

  • "Overall the experience was very good. The food was delicious. We had the prosciutto, spinach and pancetta salad and the calamari for appetizers and then the veal and Sunday dinner Braciola Alla Cacciatora. Thr meat was tender and flavorful. The only disappointments were the bread and music. The bread was good but could have been great if served warm and the music was good but not Italian so it took you out of the mood set up by a nice place. Overall the waiter was nice, food was delicious but it could have used some small tweaks to make it great."

  • "If you are going to the theater or in a rush, perfect. Wine came before cocktails, pasta came while we were eating apps. Twice bus boys attempted to take away food while we were still eating it. A great place in you want in and out, the absolutely friggin worst if you want a relaxing or romantic dinner. Food was delicious."

  • "Good food, drinks and ambiance. I actually took a vegetarian client of mine to this place and there were enough options especially on a Monday (when they have their special meatless Monday special)."

  • "I've been to NYC many times, but this time I was traveling with my oldest son who is 23. He had only been once when he was much younger. We're both into the food network and wanted to try Mario Batalli's restaurant. We were excited and rightly so...the food was fantastic. Our waitress was fantastic and very patiently explained the dishes. The wine guy was also excellent. It was a fantastic experience. 5 stars!"
    Dined on 6/30/2014
  • "If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Not only did they honor all the requests I made by seating us in a private corner and remembering our anniversary, they made a rough night incredibly better. My boyfriend and I came to celebrate, but on the way there he left his bag in a taxi. The hostess and staff held our table while we made phone calls and tried to track down the cab. Once we were seated, our waiter, Charlo, led us through the menu and was incredibly understanding while we were dealing with our lost property situation. We had a wonderful meal, excellent service, and it's all due to the staff at Lupa. We will most definitely come back the next time we are in the city!"

  • "I hadn't been here since 2006 or 7 and was really looking forward to it. Huge disappointment. Except for the bubbly hostess and familiar atmosphere, all else fell short. The server(s) were curt and unhelpful to my daughter who had questions. The food was mediocre. Nicely sliced meat isn't enough. While the sweetbreads were quite good, a relatively simple dish (carbonara) was unevenly cooked and wasn't even tasty enough to finish. Highlight was coconut gelato- wow- don't have to come down from midtown for that. Such a shame."

  • "During a recent business trip to New York, my husband and I hate here for dinner. As noted by others, the rock music is a bit loud, but it didn't bother me. The food was quite good….I had their special (pasta with lamb ragu) and my husband had the gnocchi. The waiter suggested that they be brought out in four dishes, so we could split both entrees. Great idea, and both were very good. The sommelier was very helpful and knew his wines well. The tartufo dessert was fantastic…I've been dreaming of it ever since! Service was efficient and friendly, not intrusive. I would definitely return here on a future trip to NY."

  • "What a surprise to return to Lupa after a two year absence and find the master himself, Mario Batali seating up front in the restaurant. We keep coming back years after years for the food and the quiet neighborhood feel of the place. The waiting staff is always one step ahead and they know what to do, to keep you happy. Both appetizer (the coppa cotta and the fried artichoke) we're simply divine. The heat with the artichoke was a nice surprise. The riccota and sausage gnochi melted in our mouth, a simple yet elegant dish. The skirt steak was a little tough to chew and salty. The gelato del giorno was the highlight of the meal, a delicate balance of caramel that tasted like crème brulée."
