Diner Reviews
  • "I dined at Lupa with a friend and we both thought it was fantastic! We shared the calamari appetizer as well as the orchiette pasta and gnocchi. We then finished with the pana cotta. All was amazing and we loved every bite!!! Service was attentive. The space is small and it was loud once the place filled up - but many NYC restaurants are the same way. We will definitely be back to Lupa in the future."

  • "Have been coming here for a while and the food and service are always delicious. only place to get real bucatini alla amatriciana also. go!"

  • "It was so wonderful we actually went two nights in a row... Crazy I know, but the gnocchi was devine and the cacio pepe was the best I've every had... Loved our food & service ... Go Mario!"

  • "Bucatini All'Amatriciana is all that you have to have to want to come back again and again. And a head cheese that leaves you craving more?!? Chat with the skilled staff as they operate the busy bar, see how clean the cured meat preparation area is maintained, and sit close to the doorway to catch the summer breeze through my favorite part of NYC. Thanks LUPA - we can't wait to return..."

  • "Two words and reason enough to go, although all of their food is superb. Rustic Roman food with a well curated wine list."

  • "We had lunch at Lupa on our last day in NYC. Our server was very attentive and extremely knowledgeable. Every dish that she suggested we ordered, she did not set a stray. We started with the Crimini & Parm with Aceto and the Calamari. We both decided to order pasta, the Carbonara which was rich and creamy and crispy guancale (OMG!!!) and the Bucantini All'Amatriciana. For dessert...the Apricot Coppetta was mind-blowing and the Tartufo...the homemade marashino cherry in the middle was a little hidden gem. Thank you for an amazing last meal in NYC!!!"

  • "If you are going to the theater or in a rush, perfect. Wine came before cocktails, pasta came while we were eating apps. Twice bus boys attempted to take away food while we were still eating it. A great place in you want in and out, the absolutely friggin worst if you want a relaxing or romantic dinner. Food was delicious."

  • "Our meal was great and everything came out right on time. The staff were very attentive and welcoming. So far this summer one of my top places I've been to."

  • "I've been to NYC many times, but this time I was traveling with my oldest son who is 23. He had only been once when he was much younger. We're both into the food network and wanted to try Mario Batalli's restaurant. We were excited and rightly so...the food was fantastic. Our waitress was fantastic and very patiently explained the dishes. The wine guy was also excellent. It was a fantastic experience. 5 stars!"

  • "Good food, drinks and ambiance. I actually took a vegetarian client of mine to this place and there were enough options especially on a Monday (when they have their special meatless Monday special)."

  • "During a recent business trip to New York, my husband and I hate here for dinner. As noted by others, the rock music is a bit loud, but it didn't bother me. The food was quite good….I had their special (pasta with lamb ragu) and my husband had the gnocchi. The waiter suggested that they be brought out in four dishes, so we could split both entrees. Great idea, and both were very good. The sommelier was very helpful and knew his wines well. The tartufo dessert was fantastic…I've been dreaming of it ever since! Service was efficient and friendly, not intrusive. I would definitely return here on a future trip to NY."

  • "My fave restaurant of my one-week stay. Delicious food, great wine list. FAst service and simple but yummy flavours. Loved it. Loved being able to see the ham slicing and cheese grating too."

  • "If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Not only did they honor all the requests I made by seating us in a private corner and remembering our anniversary, they made a rough night incredibly better. My boyfriend and I came to celebrate, but on the way there he left his bag in a taxi. The hostess and staff held our table while we made phone calls and tried to track down the cab. Once we were seated, our waiter, Charlo, led us through the menu and was incredibly understanding while we were dealing with our lost property situation. We had a wonderful meal, excellent service, and it's all due to the staff at Lupa. We will most definitely come back the next time we are in the city!"

  • "I hadn't been here since 2006 or 7 and was really looking forward to it. Huge disappointment. Except for the bubbly hostess and familiar atmosphere, all else fell short. The server(s) were curt and unhelpful to my daughter who had questions. The food was mediocre. Nicely sliced meat isn't enough. While the sweetbreads were quite good, a relatively simple dish (carbonara) was unevenly cooked and wasn't even tasty enough to finish. Highlight was coconut gelato- wow- don't have to come down from midtown for that. Such a shame."

  • "What a surprise to return to Lupa after a two year absence and find the master himself, Mario Batali seating up front in the restaurant. We keep coming back years after years for the food and the quiet neighborhood feel of the place. The waiting staff is always one step ahead and they know what to do, to keep you happy. Both appetizer (the coppa cotta and the fried artichoke) we're simply divine. The heat with the artichoke was a nice surprise. The riccota and sausage gnochi melted in our mouth, a simple yet elegant dish. The skirt steak was a little tough to chew and salty. The gelato del giorno was the highlight of the meal, a delicate balance of caramel that tasted like crème brulée."

  • "Ewe like Lupa so much that we eat lunch there every time we are in NYC. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED! This time we started with sardines, then shared the special cavetelli with pork shoulder and finished with the veal sweetbreads. All accompanied by a wonderful Super Tuscan. Perfect lunch. The pastas at Lupa are the highlight and they are cooked expertly. We will be back again."

  • "Excellent food. Laid back atmosphere. Can be a bit loud (although summer is better, because they open the front)."

  • "Seated in back where every seat was taken. One server for 20-25 seats--not enough coverage. Asked what kind of water we wanted, menus were dropped. 20 minutes later, our server returned to take a formal drink order, at which point we asked for some bread, as none had been offered. We ordered apps and drinks, asked a number of questions about the Italian words on the menu, said we needed two minutes. 15 minutes later the server finally returned. Further efforts to order wine, a second carafe of wine, obtain a napkin and finally to get the check, all took inordinate amounts of time. At no point were we asked how we were enjoying our meal or if we needed anything. We felt ignored. Check was $165, but service more like a $25 meal at IHOP."

  • "While Mario Batali may enjoy listening to loud rock music, we, as paying customers in his restaurant, do not. He has been criticized for this in the past but continues to inflict this music on his restaurant customers. In our most recent dinner at Lupa, we had to ask three different people if they could please turn down the volume on the screeching rock music. Finally, a manager came to our table and asked if he could move us to another table because he COULD NOT turn down the music. Really? Why not??? You have to inconvenience us by making us change tables - great customer service! Too bad because the food at Lupa is very good. Glad to see that they brought back the Apician Spiced Dates & Mascarpone - they are heaven on earth!"

  • "Pasta was run-of-the-mill and over-priced. chef relies on salt and cured pork for flavor. asparagus dry with nothing but grated cheese and breadcrumbs, both of which fell off before the asparagus hit your mouth. menu basic. bread nothing special and olive oil less than middling quality. Other Italian restaurants in the City are far better."

  • "My wife, her sister and I dined at Lupa back on May 26. First the positives: our waiter could not have been better. He was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and prompt. The food was generally good except for the cacio e pepe which was over-salted and under-peppered. The rest of our choices were good to excellent. What spoiled the evening to a certain extent was an apparent refusal on the part of management to quiet down a large group holding a bachelor's party . They, some 16 or so revelers, had taken all the window tables, which was fine. Not fine, however, was their obnoxiously loud and infantile behavior. We were far from the only ones who found these fools to be uncommonly irritating. Management should have intervened."

  • "We had a great experience at Lupa. Food was fabulous, service outstanding and we were given a really nice table in the back room. We had not been to Lupa for a few years and were delighted to see that the quality and service has remained top rate. Shared meats as an appetizer. Entries included an ocean trout, veal saltimbocca, and a few pastas. All were exceptional. Shared Gelatos for desert - spectacular. Great wine selection as well. We will definitely be back"

  • "My wife's entree was amazing but I was disappointed in the quality of my fish. Service could have improved the situation by noticing that I didn't eat a portion of it. The atmosphere was great!"

  • "We were hungry. We love pasta. We thought we were up for the task. The Roma pasta tasting was so generous, I'm still thinking about those last delicious bites of bucatini I could not finish. Don't let that stop you from trying. It's worth it"

  • "Unique and delicious… Focus on the flavors! I just came from Vegas (and I had gone to B&B of course) and wanted similar. This is our third time back to Lupa – and a second time back to a place is just the start. Sometimes you feel a little packed in but that’s what the city is all about. Each dish is delivered to you with care. Thanks – we’ll be returning."

  • "Table was right next to service area. Service team would linger and stand overlooking our table. Very awkward. They should eliminate this table. At least give the patrons a bit of space to enjoy the great food."

  • "Staff was great, place was nice, food was average - pretty dramatically bland across all courses. Tasted each dish for each of diners in our group and was surprised that nothing even mildly memorable."

  • "Of the three dishes we had (2 of them specials of the day & 1 Spaghetti Pomodoro) non of us could choose which one was our favorite...they were all amazing. Even our 7 year old daughter loved it al! The only disappointment was that the service was slow. It was not a particularly busy time when we were there, but might have been right at shift change. However, that would not stop me from going back."

  • "Outstanding off the tourist path recommended to us by Iron Chef Michael Symon, a fellow Clevelander. Cool neighborhood, great service, on the spot good with perfectly sized portions. Try the Carbonara and Tartufo for sure! Ask your waiter for recommendations as they are spot on. A must visit for foodies."

  • "I've been to Lupa a few times now and always come away very pleased with my meal. The food is excellent and so are the staff. Bravo, Mario. Only issue is space. It's too tight in the front, but maybe that's by design...keep it quaint and trattoria-like?? Needless to say, it will not deter me from returning. A little closeness with your neighbors is worth that amazing pasta."

  • "Nice casual dining spot with terrific food. Great wine list, and generous pours on the wines by the glass. The escarole salad with the wine vinaigrette was crisp with a nice woody flavor. The rigatoni with skate and broccoli rabe was wonderful in its simplicity. A great start to the evening."

  • "Portions are small. The tables are very close together to the point of claustrophobia. Decent food - gnocchi was fine and the octopus was stellar - but don't plan on returning again."

  • "While food was fairly good to me, a non-Italian, the chef could have cooked with fresher ingredients and less commercial approach. Grilled fish was considered great by my table of 4, but the pasta was non-descript. Since service is my vice, the overall 2-star was a result of lack-luster service without heart. Was expecting much from the Lupa franchise, especially when it came much recommended by my friends abroad and local. The result was a standard run-of-the-mill commercial kitchen dishes."
