A word from Lupa Trattoria
Situated in the congenial San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Lupa is a classic Italian trattoria with comfortable neighborhood charm, affordable prices, and destination-caliber cuisine. Using the best available local ingredients, Chef Stefano Coppola creates a seasonal menu featuring classic dishes from his home in Rome.

The menu is based on the Italian tradition of preparing food - combining simplicity with the best ingredients of the season, including quality olive oil, locally grown local vegetables and fruits, and seasonal specials of seafood, poultry, meat and game. Our bread and pastas - gnocchi, tagliatelli, parpardelle, linguini, tortelloni, and ravioli are homemade on premise.

In addition to the regular menu, our specials menu features different soups, antipasti, pastas, and main courses.

Beyond a passion for authentic Roman cuisine, our friendly Italian staff work from their hearts to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable.

The setting is Old World charm, and the authentic Italian cuisine is flavorful and freshly prepared. Their menu includes a variety of dishes for meat-lovers and those who prefer to graze. The staff cheerfully responds to requests and sometimes even anticipates your needs. Great for a romantic dinner or group celebration.

Made a reservation for 9pm on a saturday night, and they basically rushed us the whole time... I will not go back there because of the service. If they want everyone to be out by 10pm, they simply shouldn't allow to make a 9pm reservation.

I loved our meal at Lupa. The pasta was amazing (linguine with chanterelles & tomato), the veal was solid and good, and the shredded asparagus salad was really different and interesting - a really impressive dish so much better than a boring side salad. The prices were fair, the portions were generous. My big problem with a lot of Italian places is the flavors aren't well developed. Instead of being simple, they are also bland. Lupa avoided this, instead having great tomato and mushroom flavors in the pasta dish, and inserting mint and and citrus into the shredded asparagus salad in a way that was almost Vietnamese inspired. Anyhow, if you're looking for a "safe" Italian meal that's also interesting, a tough combo, this place can deliver.

Two initial gripes: 1. the gelato was not cold enough--wonderful but too much like soup--this one I lay on the kitchen. 2. this is not the kind of restaurant where parents, who should be able to afford a baby sitter, can let their kids run around--it is not as if the parents are bonding with their kids--they just ignore the kids even when they climb into their laps--this one I lay on an epidemic of bad parenting practices in Noe Valley and elsewhere. The place is really wonderful. Each dish is more delicious than the next, prices are fair for food and wine, portions just right. Everything on the menu is good, so go back often and try each dish. I have eaten here dozens of times and have never had anything but a really wonderful meal.

We were in town for my girlfriend's half marathon, and needed a place for bolognese. I'm not sure if its superstition, or her desire, or both - but that's what she wants for her pre race meal. So, I struggled to find a place in San Francisco that does a pasta with a bolognese... or at least declares so on their menu. In any event, we chose this place based partly on reviews, along with the menu. We were highly pleased. We started with a toasted crostini with melted mozzarrella, topped with either mushroom, red peppers, or prosciutto. Fantastic. She had tagiatelle with bolognese sauce (sort of a substitution, as the usual dish has a lamb bolognese); while I had a special - gnocchi with spicy sausage. Both were very good.

The only issue is that, like many SF restaurants, the tables are too close together. But, unlike some other places, they purposely seat people close to each other and don't let them spread out a bit. So, even though the restaurant wasn't even 1/2 full, we had people crammed on either side of us who could hear our conversation better than we could hear ourselves. A little more spacing would be nice!

We came here with a large group. They were very accommodating and the service was great. However, the food didn't quite meet my expectations. First off, if you are vegetarian or pescatarian avoid this place. You will be able to select from 2 pasta dishes or 1 daily fish special. The tiramisu is about a 5 out of 10.

Our reservation was for a Sunday meal at 7:00 PM. Parking on 24th Street was relatively easy. Our overall experience was just good. I ordered red wine which was very warm when I received it, thereby killing the taste. I should have sent it back, but didn't. On the plus side, they really fill up the glass with wine. The white wine that my companions ordered tasted much better. The food was good, but not great. We sat by the window as you enter the restaurant, which was a great location, but we were bothered by flying insects the entire meal. I realize that this is a difficult thing to control, but it didn't add to the dining experience. Noise level was a bit loud, but in my experience, was less than most restaurants that size.

We were the first people there and we asked for water when we sat down. We were ignored until our waiter came over and brought water and a loaf of BURNT bread with a flavorless plate of olive oil. I ordered an app of pears with mascarpone cheese wrapped in prosciutto The pears were from a can! I found dried, dead stems of parsley in the salad which was dressed in the same tasteless olive oil. My main was gnocchi with "wild boar" ragu and my husband had the special seafood pasta. The gnocchi was so heavy you could build a cabin. The ragu was salty, I could not taste wild boar. Hubby's dish was over cooked shrimp and calamari that was frozen and old. Our waiter asked how everything was and hubby told him. The waiter made a disgusted face!
