Diner Reviews
  • "I set up a meeting with old friends and even though I arrived early for my reservation, the staff went out of their way to be accommodating, inviting us from the bar to our table for six 15 minutes early. The bar was so comfortable (with pleasant outside seating in the middle of Jack London Square), that we were slow to make the move. The place has a great selection of micro brews and I was very happy with the octopus starter I ordered. Considering its ambiance and location, the prices were to be exected -- not cheap, be everyone seemed to enjoy their time there."

  • "our first visit. we were disappointed by the lack of the choices in all categories; although the grilled squid appetizer was quite good, the soup was not as stated (was supposed to be cream of saffron, fennel, and leek-looked like a cheddar soup mess)... entrees were also very limited althoug for the more adventurous there were some eclectic choices (rabbit, octopus). we would not return again; we had the halibut (good) and the seafood stew(fair). will choose to go to one of the longer standing places next time!"

  • "My only regret was not to be able to order the budino, as I was full. The aragula basil pesto pizza was a little bit on the dry side, but the crust and the taste are very good. I had the Ligurian Fish stew, it was delicious. And, as usual, the bread served with the meal is terrific. I also wish the meatball spaghettis would be offered more often, it was so delicious when I had it in November. The meat was moist, with a perfect balance of pork/veal, and the tomato was truly awesome. This is only one of a handful of restaurants offering "real" Italian food."

  • "It was good but not great. Considering the dining scene in Oakland it did not rate in the top for me. I do have to say that the staff was very friendly and the service was excellent."

  • "Good food (maybe a tad salty?) but very good size portions on the everything. I recommend the grilled squid antipasti and orecchiette pasta. Did not have room for dessert. The lavender soda was interesting, but too sweet for my tastebuds."

  • "While the location is good, with a good view and outdoor dining, the food and service leave much to be desired. Expensive for what you get."

  • "Lungomare has a great view, the staff is very nice and even a little sassy (which I liked). The food was very good. We had garlic infused pasta with prawns which was very tasty but overall very small. There were a couple of problems... it is very loud- you are almost forced to hear other patrons conversations and it took two hours to get our food. There was a private party of 25 people that seemed to control the kitchen. Which seemed silly since there were plenty of open tables throughout the place. The Manager communicated with us a couple of times to tell us - he was sorry about the delay and then gave us some olives. I would have preferred a glass of wine or free dessert. The bill for two people - $112."

  • "This restaurant was a disappointment for our entire group of 10. The menu was not a good one for Brunch, they said we could not have the Lunch menu even though it was 1:00pm. Our reservation was not what we requested by phone (confirmed twice before arriving and still the tables were not set. I requested outside and assured that we would be outside. When we arrived all outside tables were occupied and nothing set aside for us. So inside we sat inside. Really disappointed it was a beautiful day. We went to Lungomare based on their reputation but something has happened to the restaurant and the management and food. WOW! Never again. I forgot to mention that I am a former Culinary Arts professor, food writer and chef. Ciao, ChaCha46"

  • "This is a nice restaurant on the bay. Good food and lovely setting."

  • "A very good menu that allows for special requests such as a fresh duck egg over easy. Yummy!"

  • "We find C.Pastena's restaurants well-intentioned but slightly flawed; Lungomare is no exception. The salads are good but not inspired, whereas an ox-tongue starter was superb, so good we ordered a second. But the potato-leek soup was too salty with the taste of sweet Spanish white onions, not leeks. Then it was "up" again with the orecchiette with bolognese sauce: high quality pasta with a fine homestyle sauce. Pasta was properly cooked, not the crunchy hard most places mistake for al dente, but not mushy either. But my duck breast was thin and tough, the cherries harsh with unrelieved brandy that couldn't make up for no sauce. The portion was also really small, hence the second tongue order. Espresso better than reg coffee."

  • "We were picking up our son from Oakland airport and his flight got delayed, it was raining and traffic was heavy. Needless to say our dinning plans got delayed ase well and Lungomare was very nice and accommodating. It was a late dinner but we enjoyed it!"

  • "Love the view and the constantly updated seasonal menu! Coastal Northern Italian cuisine mashed up with locally sourced, high-quality, California coastal ingredients makes for very fine dining. From the appetizers to pizzas, house-made pastas and entrees, you'll find a plethora of unique dishes - or at least unique in the Bay Area. I've always have friendly service and the wine list is impressive in range and value There's a nice bar area and beautiful dining room, with a gorgeous side room for private parties. The sexy little patio has summer-ready fans and winter-ready windscreens and mega-heaters. Bonus question: What's a Lungomare? Gotcha covered. It means promenade or waterfront in Italian."

  • "We were a group of four and were able to sample many dishes and appetizers. The chicken liver pate stood out - very mild, smooth, subtle. Scallops were delicious. The pastas were superb - housemade. Cocktails were heavenly."

  • "When the chef signs the menus, you know that there is care and love going into the food. Each dish has some extra little twist, that takes it out of the ordinary. For example, a chowder made with salmon or a steak, accompanied by smashed potatoes."

  • "The floor staff needs better training, they were all a little rough around the edges. Very attentive whe we got there. One server almost dropped an appetizer as she was putting it down, she was shaking. When our entrees arrived , one dish had to be sent back bc it was cold (which they did quickly). But after we got our entrees, it seemed we no longer existed. No one came back to check on us, take our plates, or offer dessert for over 30 minutes and that was bc we finally flagged our waiter town. I'm not sure if they were just understaffed. The food was fine, nothing to come back for. there is way too much competition in the Bay Area so if I'm going to spend that kind of dough, I want the food to be awesome. It wasn't."

  • "On 2 visits, everything we tried (seafood & vegetarian) was exceptionally fresh, unique without being bizarre, yummy! Try scallop crudo, ribollita, all the salads, cardoons ( a breaded veg that tastes like artichoke heart, with yummy garlic aioli, salmon, mussels. Can't believe it was uncrowded on a Sat. night! Do yourself a favor and try it ! (I'm not a friend of the owner!)"

  • "Had a mid-week, group lunch here. Food was pretty good, but the service was the best. We had a few picky eaters in our group at a lunch celebration. The server was very good about offering alternatives and meeting their needs."

  • "We went during restaurant week and I usually don't expect much of the food when there is a view. They also had bottomless vine and I didn't expect much of that either. We were pleasantly surprise with the prix fixe menu. The food, vine and service was much better than we expected. It is one of the best values we've had in while."

  • "The prix fixe menu for restaurant week was AMAZING !!! & the staff are all very sweet & attentive ! The choices came with a Bottomless glass of wine, which was a great BONUS!! The servings were just right so you do not feel over stuffed. Enjoyed the entire experience, will be going back on another Sunday when they will continue the 3 course meal deal!"

  • "Should have listened to the yelp reviews. Service was diner like at best. food was decent. ambiance was LOUD. had to ask for bread which turned out to be really spongy (think Hawaiian bread) focaccia? yuck. Oh well. Just another date night flop for the parents of two little ones. try again next time."

  • "Italian food is not normally my go-to, as I can't eat dairy or wheat, but Lungomare was a wonderful departure from heavy, creamy pasta dishes. We went as a group of three for Oakland Restaurant Week and were each very pleased with our choices. The menu offers a variety of options for meat-eaters, pasta lovers, and those with more sensitive bellys. The service was attentive without being rushed or pushy and the wine list is respectable. I'll definitely be returning to peruse the full menu!"

  • "Bottomless wine and delicious salads to start. Fish for the main. Blood orange, meyer lemon sorbettos to end. We had a great meal at an affordable date night price."

  • "The service was attentive but with casual demeanor, and was a bit rushed. Food was pretty good but wasn't anything special. Portions were large and dishes were well seasoned but lacked creativity. Presentation of dishes were poor. The dining room is huge but without much ambience. I was there for restaurant week and had an excellent deal of $30 prix fix dinner which included bottomless wine. Huge salad of field greens were excellent. The pork medallion was well seasoned and tasty but was over cooked. Panna cotta was pretty good. I can't complain for the value I received for prix fix special but, I am not sure if I would go back. I am just not excited about this restaurant."

  • "I think this restaurant is getting better all the time. Very relaxing and great food and service. Sat outside on a January night and was perfectly comfortable under their great space heaters. Pizza was wonderful and the gluten free crust the best I have had. Very thin and cracker like and cooked just right. Portions were good sized. Had some wonderful Gelato for dessert. Good house wine and good price"

  • "Went here for the first time during Oakland Restaurant Week. Wonderful menu choices, even for vegetarians. Fabulous butter sage sauce with decadent squash ravioli, very delish apple and celery root salad, and ample budini chocolate dessert. house viognier wine was lovely and generous. A little on the noisy side, but not terrible. Wait staff were super nice and very hard working, but maybe had too many tables? Will come again!!"

  • "Both my husband and I had a very positive experience dining here on two separate occasions during the recent Oakland restaurant week. We each went with friends a week apart. The menu for the week was varied and all choices seemed excellent. Their"bottomless" glass of wine during the promotion was also great. Good wine. Food was outstanding and service with Mikey was excellent. The restaurant is very large so not great ambiance but the glassed in "private " dining area is the place to be."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Lungomare for restaurant week and we had a great time. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and gave great suggestions on the menu. The burrata was fantastic and the salted caramel dessert was to die for! We felt like we took advantage of the fixed menu and were rewarded with a great dinner!"

  • "We've been here before for lunch, but this Oakland Restaurant meal was even better: delicious, varied, and generous. Excellent salads (one with celery root and apple), a flavorful ravioli with squash dish, and porchetta finished in the wood oven with a delightful smoky flavor layered on polenta with crisp rapini."

  • "Caipirinhas lacked sufficient limes, possibly not enough cachacha. The "bottomless glass" featured okay wine but when I asked if my husband and I must share, since we were given only one, the waiter snapped, "If you like." and then noted he'd given us a "generous pour." We never got a second glass. My grilled octopus was tasty but tough. The trout was not bad but surrounded by overcooked over-chopped veggies. My husband's pasta was much too salty although he liked it. The dessert, basically chocolate pudding, was overly sweet."

  • "We went for Oakland restaurant week. A great bargain with that bottomless glass of wine. The salad I had was must larger than expected and a really great blend of flavors and texture. Delicious and fresh! Our entrees were prepared to perfection. Our waiter was extremely attentive and kinowledgable. The budini was yummy!!!"

  • "We came during Restaurant Week for the $30 3-course meal with wine. I had checked the special menu ahead of time. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were disappointed to find 3 of the 5 wine choices (incl. the 2 we would have ordered) not listed, and the entree choice I had planned on ordering was also not on the menu. When I asked about the trout dish, I was told that they were almost out of trout, but that I could order trout from the regular menu at a higher price ($22, plus appetizer $8-$12, plus dessert $8+). So they had trout, but would not honor the listed menu online and give it to me! There were no chicken or fish options, so I ended up ordering off the full menu. The food was decent, but this really damaged our experience here."

  • "We had a great time at a Dine About Town event, and were delighted to find out that Lungomare is currently doing something similar on Sunday nights; that is, a $30 pre fixe 3 course meal with wine included. The real kicker is that the wine, from a couple of featured wines in their wine tap program, is refilled as often as you wish (probably with limits but we didn't hit them.) The food was very good and paired well with the good quality featured wines. A couple dishes a tad salty, but otherwise very creative and good. Desserts to die for. This would be a good place to split appetizers and desserts & have your own entree if you wish."

  • "My boyfriend and I had a great experience on Saturday night. We were debating what restaurant to go to when we came across the Oakland Restaurant Week menu (and the gluten free pasta/pizza offererings). I had a list of 3 restaurants to try and this was not one of them, but the menu looked so good, so we went for it. From the greeting at the front door, to the AMAZING and very knowledgeable server (Isaac) and awesome Salted Caramel Chocolate Pudding, we had a wonderful time. We were only sad that we didn't bring any friends with us. We will definitely be back for their Sunday night pri fix menu"

  • "Met a friend for appetizers. The salad was enough to split between 2 people with our drinks and the cheese plate with it gave just enough food for 3 people. It was a great place to meet and have that mid-afternoon snack."
