Diner Reviews
  • "Once again, dining at Lumiere was a terrific experience. It proved to be a fitting way to celebrate a 40th anniversary."

  • "My husband and our two kids and I went for my birthday dinner on a Wednesday. I managed to get a reservation at 7 p.m. for four people the same day so I was happy. For a small space on a corner on a street that is not very pretty, the inside ambiance is very warm and inviting. The drinks and food were delicious. There is no kids menu but there was a pasta special and two sides (cheesy mashed potatoes and fries!) that the kids shared. The pasta (and all the other dishes) were delicious! Good cocktail and wine choies. The hostess and wait staff were attentive. "

  • "Somewhat limited choices--especially for the vegetarian in our party--but everything we had was nicely presented and delicious with interesting, flavorful spicing. We had an excellent meal that was not cheap but a relatively good value, particularly as compared to downtown restaurants of similar quality. Well worth a trip to West Newton"

  • "Delicious oysters. The porgy was wonderful - maybe we'll start fishing for them. The lemon sorbet is not for the faint of heart - very very tart. Terrific pommes frites with the brevette steak."

  • "A good restaurant with friendly staff if you are in the West Newton area. However, not worth the $25+ cab fare each way from Cambridge."

  • "From beginning to end, a phenomenal experience. From food to drink to service. Was worth the hour and a half drive. Will be back."

  • "We celebrated a family occasion at Lumiere. The food was wonderful, the wine suggestions spot-on, and they were great about accommodating the well-behaved 9 month old who was part of our party. I'd made an early reservation and asked for a high chair, and we were sat so that there was room for us all and enough distance from other diners in case the baby got chatty. (She didn't.). We had a lovely time, everything was delicious, and Tim, our server, was friendly & gracious. It's not someplace to bring a new baby or a running toddler, but we appreciated the accommodation so we could celebrate as a whole family."

  • "Atmosphere was quiet and conducive to conversation. Food was simply prepared but certainly not special. Service was mediocre, as in "Sorry, guys, I forgot." Overall experience did not warrant the expense. Wish I wanted to go back, but I don't. Disappointing."

  • "We had an exceptionally fine meal at Lumiere. Appreciated the relaxed atmosphere, we stayed for a long time at our table and had a nice visit with our friends without feeling rushed. Love the expanded space, would definitely dine there again."

  • "Remains consistently excellent over the years where other upscale eateries are not always consistent. Every dish ordered by our party of 4 was delicious."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "OK place. Service was indifferent and inattentive. Food was good and seemed fairly priced, wine and bar really high so total bill was too high for overall quality."

  • "This restaurant rivals some of Bostons Best. The service and food are top notch. There is a lot of time and effort put into both the preparation and presentation. We were a party of 5 that left happy and full. Definitely worth the trip."

  • "We have never had a meal here that we did not consider excellent! The service is top rate, the food quality - superb. Lovely ambiance. Over the years, we find Lumiere to be one of the finest restaurants in the Boston area."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Flavors were wonderful combinations of spices and everything was fresh!"

  • "We felt very well taken care of. Our waitress had humor, skill and lots of information. We found the appetizers and sides most tempting; for our tastes, the entrees were thin on non-meat options. It was a celebratory evening with a long time friend and for that purpose, Lumiere was perfect."

  • "I ordered a special. It was a veal chop. Another veal item was 38.00 so I figured it would be around the same price point give or take. First of all there was so much grissle and fat that I gagged on my food and had to spit it into the napkin. The part I could eat was good but not great..maybe a 6/10. When we got the bill and saw that my entree was a whopping 80 bills I almost fell over. I dod not mind paying big cash for a delicacy but a special that is more than twice what anything else on the menu costs, should be explained by the waiter. More importantly, it was not worth the extra cost. The service was fine but there was nothing I ate that would make me come back especially at those surprise prices."

  • "My friend and I went here to celebrate her birthday. We had a great time. The food was outstanding. We'll be going back the next time we have something to celebrate."

  • "I have eaten here at least 5 times, mainly for special occasions, and I am constantly amazed at how good their food is. I had the chef's tasting menu this time while my co-diners had the prix fix menu, one with the wine pairing. They were generous with their portion size and we left completely sated. They served us individualized bites/snacks with our aperitif and the plating for each course was very attractive. The staff were friendly and efficient, never missing a beat, but we were not rushed at all. I would highly recommend Lumiere."

  • "Great food ; wonderful service. There were two of us and we were seated in a row of two person tables. We felt too close to our neighbors . This inhibited our conversation and we resorted to whispering to each other. That was uncomfortable.. I wouldn't want to sit in that section again."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "a good restaurant, and maybe will return, but above my usual price point/sweet spot. I loved my striped bass entree but I could tell my three companions were meh about theirs (porgy, steak, scallops). If I could afford it, I'd happily go back and try some of the other things, and I really liked the room, and the service was good. close to the movies, which makes for a fun evening combination possibility. random detail: be careful crossing the street there (seriously) - the interesection has a design flaw which can lead to cars blowing through the signalled crosswalk."

  • "my husband and i had a gc for lumiere, and we decided to give it a try. we were not disappointed. i started out with the scallops which were cooked just right. hubby started with the oysters. I had the bison short ribs on polenta which were amazing. hubby had the bass which was also amazing. of course we had the chocolate cake for dessert. very rich, so we decided to split it. my one complaint was I felt a bit rushed. our reservation was for 6:45. we were done by 8:00. While I realize that it is a small restaurant, and on a saturday night you want to get as many people in as possible, i also feel as though if i'm going to pay $28.00 for an entree, and $50 for a bottle of wine, then I do not want to be rushed."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We visited Lumiere after reading a good review in the Boston Globe, but we have to disagree with the food critic. Our scallops were dry and stringy from being overcooked. The chocolate cake could have been bought at the grocery store. Our entrees (steak with frites and chicken with gruyere mashed potatoes) were good but not worth what they cost. For a tab that comes out to over $50 per person, we expect much better."

  • "i took my wife for her birthday and we had a very special night. the taste of the food sets it apart. limited menu with only 6 options on each of the dinner and appetizer sections but it was fine. great service and explanation of the uniquer dishes. 5 stars strong"

  • "The food was very good. My husband and I felt uncomfortable because everybody there was over 80. No exaggeration. It felt like Boca at 5 o'clock for the earlybird special. Maybe it's because of lack of atmosphere.? Very small bar- 4 seats . Won't be back until I'm 80."

  • "Our appetizer (scallops) and dessert (chocolate cake with coconut ice cream) were outstanding, but our entrees (sole and veal) were good, but not great. Our waiter was very impersonal and seemed distracted. When he brought our dessert with a candle, he said he wasn't sure whose celebration it was, or what was being celebrated, so "Happy, happy." But when we left, the maitre d' wished me a happy birthday (which I had said it was on my Open Table reservation), so obviously the waiter could have found out if he'd half tried. Not our best experience with this restaurant, but certainly very good."

  • "We have been to this restaurant a few times but, usually on a Sunday night. Always good. Professional and attentive waitstaff. We've never been hurried. Features homemade desserts. A small menu and nice selection of wines. The best part, very conversation friendly. On a recent Sunday I enjoyed the excellent braised Lamb."

  • "There are a number of suburban eateries where Zagat is spot on. However Lumiere is not one of them. While the service and ambience suffice, for true foodies, the offerings fall far short. A Zagat "24" is it's more appropriate score."

  • "This must be my 4th or 5th visit over the last few years and 2nd birthday visit, and Lumiére has consistently provided a pleasurable and memorable dining experience. This visit was unique in that I sat at the bar and enjoyed the chefs tasting menu and perfectly matched wine flight - an experience I would highly recommend and look forward to duplicating. The bar has only 4 or 5 seats but affords a view into the kitchen where you can watch the magic happen."

  • "We have been to Lumiere many times and always love it. It is consistently excellent. Perhaps the best restaurant west of Boston- The waitstaff is very experienced, professional, and appropriately formal (not my best friend, my server...) On this night we ordered a bottle of medium priced wine and after drinking a glass I told the waiter I was not crazy about it and he offered to take it back at no charge. While I declined I appreciated his sincere interest and generous offer. Not many restaurants will do that. The food as usual was excellent- not too fancy but delicious and served up hot and timely."

  • "Excellent, comfortable French bistro. As good as any restaurant in Boston area. Expceially enjoyed the scallops, grilled to perfection. Apple tart is not to be missed. Exterior does not do justice to interior upscale atmosphere. We'll be back."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "We really expected a much higher level of service and cuisine based on the past ratings. Steak was mediocre. Scallops and desert were the best part of the meal. Be prepared to wait between courses and drinks as if you were forgotten."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Service was slow at the beginning and I had to catch the waiter several times for service we needed. The menu was not exciting and I did not go to an upscale restaurant to eat lamb shanks but this was the best of the choices. the dessert was fabulous. I have wanted to go to this restaurant for some time and now that I have been there I do not intend to return. It is expensive but not worth the cost. Very disappointing."

  • "Always good. One of my four favorite restaurants in the Boston area. We have been coming to this restaurant for at least 7 years and have never had a bad meal. On this visit we shared braised beef and veal tenderloin, both properly cooked, nicely presented and with the appropriate sauces. It is a great place for special occasions or just a fine dinner with friends. Excellent service staff too."

  • "We loved it here!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best veal tenderloin I've ever had."

  • "My wife and I had not been back to Lumiere for several years and were shocked to find it now had more of a bistro environment. Simple, two-person tables were prepared in the most spartan fashion imaginable -- no table cloth, silverware wrapped up in a napkin like a luncheonette. Our waiter was perfectly cordial but was dressed very casually in jeans that practically fell off his hips. The icing on the cake given the price point of this restaurant -- prix fixe at $80 per person plus $35 for the wine pairing -- was our check being delivered as a small piece of paper from a cashier's ribbon and placed directly on the table. In sum, the food itself was very good, but given the price point we would have expected a more refined dining experience."

  • "The set menu was limited. My own perception was that it would manage the amount of time that people would dine. The strategy seemed to address the volume for the occasion. It is a popular venue and has been around for many years. It is just too expensive for what is given."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Simply one of the best restaurants in town! Seasonal ingredients prepared creatively and excellent service."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "I lived few streets over from Lumiere since 2000. Always passed by it when I'm on Washington Street. Never knew what was cooking inside at night. Loved the Chef's tasting menu and the wine pairing. I'm not much into red wine so had few sips of that. Wished I remembered all the French names that the wonderful waiters doled out along with the sumptuous dishes."
    Dined on 2/10/2014
  • "I feel this is probably one of the finest restaurants in the Boston area..but the atmosphere of the restaurant was always uninviting, very quiet and a bit stark. It has somewhat improved with the extra seating at the bar and their attempt to add music although very softly, and the help seems much friendlier as of late."
