A word from Lumberyard
In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We went with a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday. Although the waiter was very kind, the description of the food was not accurate nor by him or in the menu. Also there were some additional charges never described or asked, such as a $25 just to cut and serve a cake we brought ourselves. We were very displeased when reviewing the ticket afterwards. It was a $500+ dinner and we felt that we were not cared for appropiately."

  • "Yet another fabulous meal at Lumberyard with impeccable service and food. This place does not disappoint and is great for all types of occasions or informal drinks/appetizers. Can't wait to return again and finally check out the bar area."

  • "Excellent food and service in Laguna. Will be going back soon."

  • "I have food allergies and always mention this to the server. This was noted and she told me that she would check with the chef regarding mushroom/truffle oil usage. When my meal was served, I was informed that the fries had been cooked in the same oil as mushrooms. They had another side order in hand that was served with my dinner just to be sure. It was a nice touch that they anticipated my problem and I didn't have to wait for an alternative."

  • "This is our grown daughter's request each year for her birthday celebration. We always enjoy the casual atmosphere and good food. The noise level is high, but manageable. In the past we've had excellent service, but this trip not great but not terrible. Just fair."

  • "The food here was great. The service was fine (refills took a long time, server didn't have any extras to share such as his favorites, etc.). We had an early reservation. The restaurant was mostly empty. For some reason, they chose to sit us right next to a loud table having a great time. Now, there is nothing wrong with a group having a good time, but I think the hostess could tell we were there for a date night by the way we were dressed. The light was burned out above our table, making it hard to read the menus and see each other. This restaurant is a very neat location and beautifully decorated. If you go, maybe speak up right away if you want a different table. We didn't, and it detracted from our fun night."

  • "We always enjoy our meals here. The fish is outstanding and everything is always piping hot and served together. The bar is always quick to deliver a favorite drink. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun evening."

  • "This was our first meal at Lumberyard and it was delicious. We were there for lunch. The menu provided many tempting choices. The menu includes appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, salads , entrees (meatloaf, BBQ pork, fish etc) and fresh soup. For lunch, the Lumberyard offers several selections for $10 along with the above menu selections. I had the 'wedge' salad and tomato bisque soup and my husband had the club sandwich. Portions are large and can be shared. Everything was fresh and delicious. The ambiance is calm and peaceful for lunch, but I think it may be more lively in the evening. The bar area looked welcoming. We were very happy with our lunch and will return to this restaurant."

  • "Took a friend to lunch and requested Birthday desert and candle when made reservation through Open Table. When got to restaurant, no one was by hosts table and I had to tell 2 people that I have reservation, hoping they'll bring out Birthday desert. Nothing happened, except the waiter asked couple times if we need anything. So surprise lunch not very surprise :( Otherwise the food is great as usual and well presented and yummy."

  • "The Lumberyard has been a favorite for years. We always enjoy the food and the service is excellent.... that is something we can count on and that's why we keep coming back. It is however, a VERY noisy place so forget about a conversation with anyone across the table....."

  • "If price is not a problem and if every seat filled in the place with happy chatter is not a problem that I highly recommend. The food was fantastic and the service A quality. Also this was my first experience with open table and booking a table ahead of time was smooth as silk"

  • "Great spot, very large dining room and bar area, good ambience. Seafood omelet was disappointing - it was made from, I believe, Alaskan crab and bay shrimp. The pan was too hot and the omelet was overcooked. More attentive preparation and better quality ingredients would have improved it. On the up side, the Hollandaise sauce topping it was fantastic. A grilled artichoke was very tasty, but it was dripping in a marinade, which made for sloppy eating. Also had a seared tuna sandwich, which was actually pretty good. Service was prompt and attentive."

  • "Fantastic food and phenomenal drinks! Finally was able to find Singapore drink that met true standards. Very pleased with food. Rib eye steak was so tender that it practically melted in your mouth. Wonderful ambience and great service. Definitely will go back and recommended for everyone to try."

  • "I like this restaurant generally. But I feel gypped about the OC Restaurant Week special menu. It appears that these $10 lunches are their regular menu, not a Restaurant Week special. The food was OK, but it was a small portion more like an appetizer than a lunch. It left all of us hungry and feeling cheated."

  • "We were here for a first time during OC Restaurant Week, two of us enjoyed a terrific $30 3 course dinner, and the other two went for the $45 dinners, one chose lobster and one chose a ribeye. The restaurant was packed, but still our service was good, and the food was excellent. An easy casual ambiance too. Nice bar area, and a very friendly bartender - and overall, it was very good, and we'd certainly return."

  • "I took some out-of-town friends to dinner here on a Saturday night. We began with drinks, Mohitos and a Strawberry Margarita, which were impressive. Two of us had the halibut special and it was cooked to perfection, flavorful and seasoned just right. The accompanying risotto was fabulous, creamy and again seasoned perfectly. My other friend had the sea bass with mashed potatoes and was extremely pleased. For dessert we shared a fruit cobbler that wowed the out-of-towners (me as well!). The service was impeccable; wait staff was upbeat and attentive without being intrusive. On our way home I received kudos for picking such a great place. Lumberyard is now my go-to restaurant for great food and service."

  • "We arrived on time and we were seated promptly. Attetnive waiters all evening. The food was delicious and good portions. We had the cornbread for an appetizer and highly reccomend it. This is out second time at Lumberyard and will continue to dine there and refer it to our friends!"

  • "I had another amazing meal at Lumberyard and the rest of my group were very pleased. The atmosphere inside the restaurant has a dark, rustic, yet modern feel. This latest visit which occurred during the evening on Valentine's Day provided an energetic scene. Despite the restaurant being extremely busy, our server was very attentive, and food delivery was timed perfectly. Some of the food items ordered by group included shrimp & lobster spring roles, french onion soup, skirt steak, short ribs, pasta Bolognese, and butter cake, all of which were phenomenal. I can't visit again soon for a great evening."

  • "We went here for Valentines dinner in hopes of having a great romantic meal. The salmon and sole we ordered were both overlooked and certainly not worth the price on their event menu. The waitress was barely present during the meal while a food runner took care of delivering the meals and others filled the water glass. Finally, desert was served. A cake with chocolate covered strawberries was the only option. The strawberries were good but the cake tasted as if it was missing an ingredient. Dry and crumbly and lacking and taste. $120.00 later we were on our way home very disappointed."

  • "I called and asked if they had a Valentines menu. They said "No Valentines Menu". When we sat down there was a Valentines menu and with higher prices than shown on their web site. food was OK . but my girlfriend enjoyed it very much. so I was happy. a little pricey for what we ate."

  • "Good food and friendly, prompt service. Can't comment much on the ambiance since we sat outside so as to not be the loud, obnoxious couple in the place (which actually did have 5 tables at around 4pm)."

  • "The food came very quickly and hot. Two couples dinning before a Laguna Playhouse program. We lingered and were not hurried. Three steak dinners and one swordfish. All top notch. Menu variety made chosing a pleasurable challenge. Split the 10oz filet with my wife with an extra side of veggies. Just right and filet was one the best I have had in a while. We ate early (5:15) so the noise level was low at first but increased as tables filled and a large group started nearby. There may be quieter corners if you are looking for a intimate dinner for two. I did not rate a 5 as at this price point as the ambience is not quite the type I look for when dinning. However, an excellent choice for a before event dinner or dinning with friends."

  • "We've dined here several times mid week and this was first time on a Saturday, arrived early and only standing room near the bar to have a drink to wait for our table. Smoked salmon and ahi apps were great, salad came drenched in dressing even though we asked for it light, main courses were very good as was service."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as we dined at a table by the fireplace with a big picture window. Food and service was good. Music, though not live that particular night, was really great. Highly recommend this restaurant - this was our first visit."

  • "I prefer eating in the bar. When we dine in the restaurant proper it always seem like the food is not quite as good. Also not as hot."

  • "FIVE STARS and then some! Very convenient if you are going to LAGUNATICS or PAGEANT of the MASTERS - walking distance. GREAT ambience - warm lighting, fireplace, PERFECT. GREAT service - from Hostess to waiters. FOOD FOOD FOOD - A++++++ - I had the parmesan crusted Filet of Sole and my husband wanted to try their ONE AND ONLY Chicken Pot Pie. This is not the type of entrée he would normally order, but..the reviews said yes, so he said yes. I took a taste since I'm into cooking with good ingredients and tasty criteria,, and WOW - unbelievable. So was my Filet of Sole!!! Prices are fine too - LUMBERYARD has it all - and we have to make sure we go the six miles to eat there more often!"

  • "They had a 30 person wedding party group on a Friday night that was not in a separate area and was out of hand. Screaming brides maids downing shooters is not my idea of a nice evening at the beach. Even without the screaming the noise level was so loud my wife and I could not talk at our own table on the other side of the restaurant. You need to add a new Noise level because Energetic would have been fine. This was way above this. Too bad, it seemed like a nice place based on prior reviews."

  • "The service and food far exceeded our expectation. We were celebrating an anniversary but wanted a casual atmosphere where we could just relax and enjoy our dinner. The food and presentation was excellent and the portions were generous."

  • "If you want good food and an energetic dinner spot, Lumberyard has got both. We have always enjoyed our selections and I always save room for the molten lava cake! A bit too loud for easy conversation, but a very fun atmosphere."

  • "The cocktails are great, and fairly priced. We eat at the Lumberyard at least once a month. My husband enjoys their steaks. I like the burger and the chicken penne. The portions are generous and the quality is first rate. They are good at honoring reservations also. If you are eating dinner you should make reservations - they get busy every night."

  • "We last visited the Lumberyard right after they first opened years ago. We were not impressed at that time but some friends invited us to join them there this weekend and we went. We were seated at a comfortable booth right in front of the fireplace, which was great on a chilly evening in Laguna. The service was good and the food selection and prices were great...all 4 of us ordered different items and everyone was pleased with their food. I had the pot pie and it was abit garlicky which I thought was weird for a chicken pot pie but it was still good and everyone else was very pleased...I would definitely recommend when in Laguna Beach."

  • "While we always enjoy the Lumberyard during the year, especially for lunch, we didn't have high expectations for NYE, as we are typically dissapointed with our dining experiences during busy holidays. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the outstanding service (our server was awesome) and the overall quality of the food. We had the salmon and the ribeye and both were delicious."
