A word from Lumberyard
In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.Continued

  • "While vacationing in Laguna we ate at many different establishments. The Lumberyard was our last meal, sure wish we would have found this place earlier, as we would have returned a number of times during our 5 day stay. Meal was great, service was super, friendly, informative. Nice environment, easily parked within walking distance, and it was just an all around nice place for a couple of enjoy a great time for dinner. We will come back to Laguna for sure, and will include the Lumberyard as a sure place to dine. Cannot recommend highly enough! Good prices too!!! Just try it, you will be impressed just like we were."

  • "I would recommend based on good food/service and location. Walking distance to Pageant and the Laguna Beach Theater."

  • "I've eaten at Lumberyard 3 years in a row since it is near the Pageant of the Masters. We meet friends once a year here and then go to the Pageant. It was the best food we've had in the 3 years! The fish was excellent - the Ahi and Sea Bass. Our daughter had the angel hair pasta with Shrimp and really enjoyed it. The Sangria was very refreshing. The service was very good."

  • "Something is different about this place since we were last there several months ago. Not a familiar face around. Our party of four agreed, after the fact, that the food was nearly tasteless. Perhaps there is new management or ownership."

  • "Reservations a must. Really good food and attentive service. We would go back!!"

  • "Nice, upscale rustic setting. The food was outstanding! I had perfectly grilled sea bass served over amazing corn and edamame in a delicious sauce. The goat cheese beet salad was also excellent. Delightful! We were also in easy walking distance for the Festival of the Arts Pageant of the Masters."

  • "I made reservation for 7pm prior to attending the Pageant of the Masters. Our table was already waiting for us. Our server was very attentive. I ordered the skilled corn bread and it was outstanding! Then we had the wedge, delicious. I had the crispy lobster and shrimp rolls and my husband ordered the 8 oz grilled skirt steak, it came with tender asparagus and zucchini fries. Eveything was delicious. I will definitely go back!"

  • "The Lumberyard is a great place to dine in Laguna Beach. The food was flavorful and the portions were generous. The service was very good and the atmosphere was just right. It is excellent for brunch, lunch or dinner."

  • "We loved the venue and the food was exceptional. Especially the Sole. The wait staff were also wonderful. We arrived early and were able to be seated right away and waited for the rest of our party to arrive. No one rushed us it was just great! Will definitely come back"

  • "The food was very good. And the big plus is that they service my favorite wine by the glass, not many people do that. The service was not attentive and one suggestion is that even though they don't serve bread unless requested, they should offer it at the beginning of the meal"

  • "Very convenient when going to the Laguna Playhouse."

  • "The service was very good. Food was good as well. The braised short ribs were a bit overdone, but the appetizers were very good. The tomato and buffalo mozzarella was fantastic!!!"

  • "Flexible with the menu and dietary needs. Great omletes, and nice house wine."

  • "Food was very good! Service was a bit slow to get started, but then was OK. Nice to find a place within walking distance of the Laguna Playhouse to enjoy a pre or post show meal. It IS quite noisy.... Nice small outside patio, also pretty lively/noisy"

  • "The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I had the bacon wrapped meatloaf; huge serving portion, perfectly seasoned set atop creamy mashed potatoes. The server was attentive and eager to please. This is one place I make sure to stop every time I'm in Laguna."

  • "We went there, the food was good, the service was good, the area was good, we will go back again."

  • "We have visited the Lumberyard many times because the food is always good. The location is perfect for visitors attending events at the playhouse or festival grounds. It is also a centrally located spot frequented by locals. We shall return again soon. The menu includes simple things like burgers and beef dip sandwiches up to and including full dinners. My favorite is the Tri-tip French Dip Sandwich with a side of spinach. "

  • "Went for lunch on a Saturday, before a show @ the Playhouse & were in a bit of a rush. Our waiter provided friendly, fast service to ensure we were ontime, in and out in 45 minutes. We didn't have as much time as we would have liked to relax & enjoy the atmosphere, but for the time we were there, it was very pleasant. The food was so delicious! The sole w/rice & broccolini was large enough to share. Spinach salad was fresh & very flavorful. We all agreed the fresh, high quality ingredients are what made for such a great & memorable meal. On all our lists as one of the best meals in recent memory! Reasonable prices, in line w/ most other places in Laguna beach, perhaps even a bit more inexpensive. Cannot wait to go back again! "

  • "We had a late lunch early dinner. Food was better than expected, service was great, quiet and the restaurant had a nice feel to it. The only negatives were: 2 or 3 out of five menu options (promotions at entrance) were "sold out." I think the host, at the checked in forgot her smile at home (maybe having a bad day). Waitress was great though. Would go back again, no problem!"

  • "We had a great dinner (the meatloaf is unbelievable and a specialty!) and wine. Service was prompt. The acoustics are difficult to really enjoy it all. We were sat away from the bar which was VERY noisy and it was still very challenging. Overall, would go back but would consider the noise level if you are really going for a relaxing meal. "

  • "It was girls night out and we picked this restaurant since it was very close to Laguna Playhouse and the food has always been excellent. We decided to try the Happy Hour Menu that had some great selections. We had the truffle popcorn that was a great hit, the shrimp and lobster spring rolls were OK and the artichoke dip that was very good. The dip was so hot it burnt my upper palate. My fault for not checking it first before popping it in my month but do watch for this with this dish. 2 gals had the Kale Salad which they both liked very much. I have had lunch here on prior visits and the food is most excellent. The bar server was lots of fun."

  • "My daughter graduated from CSUF and we had our family dinner there. My father-in-law had the petrale sole and absolutely loved it. It's one of his favorite dishes and it's hard to find. He said it was the best he had ever had and the biggest piece he had ever had. My mother-in-law and the salmon and loved it too. Overall it was a wonderful dinner. Also, their Sunday Brunch is great too."

  • "This was our second time at the LumberYard and our first time for dinner. We got there early, around 5pm, as we were heading to the Laguna Playhouse for a play later in the evening. There is a happy hour, but it only applies if you sit in the bar area. We were in the dining room. I ordered the meatloaf which I split with my husband along with a grilled artichoke. There was more than enough food for both of us. Both were delicious. Our friends ordered the wedge salad to split, short ribs which were lovely and the penne pasta which was over cooked and flavorless. Restaurant was full by 6pm so service suffered a bit and was quite noisy. We were there on a Thursday evening. It's a popular place!"

  • "Very much enjoyed the dinner meal. However, our waiter was indifferent, and not attentive. It made the differnce between a very good experience and a so-so experience. I would try the Lumberyard again, to give the establishment another chance."

  • "The food and service are incredible. Very kind and attentive waiters and other staff. The only drawback was the noise which made it challenging to have a conversation with four people. "

  • "The Lumberyard is my Go-To for pre-theatre dining, efficient service, good wine list, and decent set of well-prepared choices on the menu, never get tired of Lumberyard, and it's practically next door to the Pageant of Masters and Laguna Playhouse. Had the Peppercorn encrusted NY Steak - tender, spot-on medium rare and tasty. Our waiter knew his wine list, even to the region my Malbec was from, (NW Mendoza, 1200 meters). My date had the traditional Surf and Turf and was quite pleased by the way she gobbled it up."

  • "Great place to go before attending a play at the Laguna Playhouse! Great Parking."

  • "This place is VERY NOISY! It is popular for good reason. The food is consistently good and well priced but forget about a conversation...."

  • "The waitor was fabulous and he had been there since 10 am. As manager Remembered all our drinks kept us on time for play. Food very delicious I had booked incorrect date, they made sure we had a table..... Great staff Lively place "

  • "We've dined at Lumberyard over the years and have always been pleased. I was particularly happy to see the Kale salad to which I added a delicious piece of grilled salmon. You can eat big or healthy at Lumberyard, something to please everyone. I would feel comfortable bringing the family here or going for a couples night out or pre-theatre dinner. The service is polite and attentive. Seems like Lumberyard keeps getting better & better: menu offerings, wine selections, service...it's all good!"

  • "Lumberyard is a restaurant you can find any where. Not a notable menu. It is reasonable but by example: do not use Iceberg Lettuce in a salad! California has so much good fresh vegetables to offer that you should choose from other lettuce kinds. "
    Dined on 5/1/2014
  • "The food and service was good...I felt the restaurant could use a face-lift. The booth I was in had a tear in the seat and it was covered with grey tape. It looked as though it had been there for some time. When such things happen, it makes a customer feel a little nervous about the quality of care and cleanliness in the kitchen."
