Diner Reviews
  • "The best food I had during my trip to Chicago. Three separate friends had told me that Lula was their favorite Chicago restaurant, and now I agree with all of them."

  • "From the special cocktails, to the appetizers and daily specials, to the wait staff, this place sets the bar at excellence. The chef and pastry chef put on a show each day(except Tuesday) that is truly magical. If you've been looking for that next great restaurant to try in this great restaurant town, don't wait and make a reservation at this remarkable eatery."

  • "This is an always inventive and tasty take on american food. We have never been disappointed. There are unexpected combinations and flavors The servers know the menu and the kitchen gets things out when they should."

  • "Great place for vegetarians. Fresh seasonably appropriate ingredients in delicious combinations. Interesting (and intoxiacating) cocktails. Prices are very reasonable for the overall quality provided. Service was friendly and spot on. My wife and I have gone here three times over the past 5 years and are wondering why it it hasn't been much more often. In combo with a late movie at the Logan it a swellegant date option."

  • "Lula Cafe is a warm, welcoming environment with a very attentive waitstaff. I was out with a friend who has dietary restrictions (e.g. Lactose intolerant). We had no problem finding really delicious dishes that satisfied her restrictions as well as my sense of adventure. We started with Beet Bruschetta, beautifully prepared and so yummy. Our waitress was very familiar with the menu. She gave us an excellent recommendation for wine which by the way was not the priciest wine of this kind. I had the Rutabaga Gnudi which is kind of like rutabaga meets gnocchi. I absolutely loved it. My friend had a chicken dish which was full of wonderful flavors. Lula's was a great environment that was bustling before 7 pm on a week night. We loved it"

  • "We had been meaning to try Lula Cafe for many years, but after moving to the 'burbs it kind of fell off our radar. We won't forget it anymore! For starters, the service was excellent. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, and was so kind and helpful in figuring out what I could eat off the menu with my food allergies. The food was outstanding, you simply can't go wrong at this place. Steamed black cod, danG! The atmosphere was great for date night with my main squeeze, parking was easy, happy lady."

  • "From being late to our reservations and the staff common understanding, it was quite brilliant. Expectation is men core demand to excellency, and Lula delivered. The timing and delivery was slick, smarmy and classy. From the first order to the last, the staff delivered an outstanding cordial service that few restaurants in an urban setting commits."

  • "Going to Lula Cafe is a great way to end the week. The staff is attentive. The food is wonderful. The restaurant has great vibe."

  • "This is a place that allows one person at the table to order the tasting menu, even if others aren't which is nice. The vegetarian tasting menu was interesting and varied, and I really appreciated the availability. I was a little disappointed at the inclusion of the cheese plate: there were other vegetarian things available on the cafe menu that they could have included that would definitely been more interesting, but all the other items were interesting and well done. The menu was very seasonal and local."

  • "We went with a group for a casual business dinner and our guest of honor's flight was late. Lula cafe was incredibly accomodating, kept our table for us, and even turned down the music so we could talk. The food was delicious. The duck confit was the table favorite. The drinks could have been better balanced but were original and interesting. The service was very well paced. We were given exactly the right amount of time to talk and our waiter was available but not intrusive. It was perfect!"

  • "The food was delicious. The Beet Bruschetta and the Risotto were particularly excellent. Note: My boyfriend and I came here for dinner during a visit to Chicago. Wile ordering, we stayed in East Coast mode and forgot about the midwestern portions (the "side salad" was huge)!! We had a lot of food left over, and probably could have done with one less appetizer."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The mushrooms and potato puree in the soft egg were comforting without being heavy. The Isle of Rhodes dish was visually stunning and hit all the key taste notes (savory, bright with texture). The rushing waters trout was also great with the grapefruit and fennel. The stuffed rabbit saddle was good, but it paled in comparison to the other dishes last night."

  • "so nice to go out and have a wonderful "top chef" meal! high quality, interesting flavors and ingredient combinations."

  • "Excellent food for the most part but portions not adequate side dishes on dinners could be larger. Wines on the high side"

  • "I have been to lula's several times although not since summer of2012. We ate several small astonishling good appetizer , squid, rabbit, mushroom and then shared a trout main that was out of this world. The sauces and glazes used each were creative and deep with favors, but never overwhelming. Wines by the glass were sufficient and good. Portion sizes tend to be smaller than most places but what they lack I size, they make up in flavor."

  • "I have been coming to Lula for ten or more years. First, with my parents when I was in high school and now as a place to have valentines day with my husband or brunch with a friend. I even almost had my wedding reception here! The food is extremely flavorful and well crafted. It is definetly created with love and inspiration and I appreciate the commitment to seasonality and integrity of the ingredients. I love everything about Lula."

  • "This place has fancy food in a relaxed atmosphere. dark inside at night, enough to make the meat look more cooked than it is... Food was nicely arranged, and well prepared. the menu had a good variety of dinner dishes for a places like that, although most of the appetizers did not appeal to me... cheese plate appetizer. great! There were three or four cheeses you never have, softer cheeses-not Brie- these had huge flavor- you only eat a little on the good bread. perfect amount. We had a cocktail with mezcal. We tried it because it looked interesting and it was! It was smooth, flavorful. Desert menu is very good, very very delicious stuff. I usually skip desert in favor of coffee. Not here meat order- if you want medium well, order well"

  • "Lula Cafe once was a downscale diner with good veg offerings. Now it is all grown up to fit in with the hipster set. Still great food, now great atmosphere to go with it."

  • "You can't be the deliciousness that comes from Lula Cafe. I also love that they have 2 menu options which affords anyone you are dining with the option to touch on fine dining, farm to table, of season now, etc which of course is more expensive. Or, they still offer the original Lula Cafe menu that is still chock full of the best local ingredients, broad variety and better for those on a tighter budget. The cocktails are delicious, so if you have to wait at the expanded bar it's another taste treat to be had and offers a nice scene. Go check out Lula Cafe!! Then if you love it, venture down to Pilsen and try out Nightwood!"

  • "I have been to Lula Cafe many times for lunch, but my dinner experience was amazing!"
    Dined on 1/12/2014
  • "Wonderful food but the entree portions were so small--and expensive! My boyfriend and I actually went home and had a bowl of cereal after our meal, despite ordering hearty soundin entrees, a side, and two desserts! This place is not a good value, especially when there are so many other options in the neighborhood."

  • "Lula is my favorite Chicago restaurant. It's got something for everyone, anytime - Brunch, Lunch, Dinner. The wait staff is always pleasant and knowledgeable, with great recommendations. Lula is always the first restaurant I recommend to friends in from out of town for its versatility, contemporary flavors, delicious cocktail selection, and beautiful atmosphere."

  • "Brunch, lunch or dinner, Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter: Lula Cafe is consistently a wonderful restaurant. Impeccable standards observed by all staff members, consistently delicious menus that change with the seasons (and this is one of the few places where I make room for dessert because it never let's you down), effortless comfort. A rare place where you can have a stupendous meal that is affordable, and suitable for any occasion."

  • "We were in Chicago and looking for a decent, not overly touristy, not over-priced restaurant for dinner. A Google search turned up this place as one of the best in the city and I have to agree. I had the vegetarian tasting menu, which is full of fun, unusual, well composed dishes. I enjoyed every single thing I ate and you get to taste a little bit of several things on the menu. One of the highlights for me was the mushroom soup, with hints of chocolate. Sounds weird but it was perfect. The service was impeccable throughout the meal, with our waitstaff explaining every dish and coming by frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. We really had a lovely evening here."

  • "I've been to Lula too many times to count now, but the food is always amazing-- be it brunch, lunch or dinner! They rotate their menu fairly often, so I'm always trying something new and am never disappointed. I'm also vegetarian, and it's one of the easier places to find more than one option that I can eat, and it's especially cool that they rotate in a vegetarian farm dinner! Service is always great, and the people friendly and helpful."

  • "We got the vegetarian tasting menu, and it was outstanding. At only $45/person, it felt like we were ripping them off!"
    Dined on 12/27/2013
  • "Even if you're not vegetarian, six courses for $45 is an incredible value and portions are generous. Really loved all the dishes we had, the mushroom beer bisque was a standout, with pomegranate seeds, roasted leeks and barley chips for a garnish. Perfect for dipping their sourdough rye bread from Cellar Door Provisions. Also enjoyed the rutabaga gnudi, cheese course and apricot chestnut tart with coffee ice cream. A really filling, hearty winter meal. The vegetarian tasting is basically all the vegetarian items on their regular menu. People often complain about service here, but we had Natalie and she was great. She's been there e since they opened 14 years ago!"

  • "I have been to Lula Cafe 5 times and was excited to come back. Unfortunately I was disappointed this time. Based on the waiter's recommendation, I ordered the short rib. It was not very tastey. I have to admit the other 4 at our table did not complain about their entrees. For my son's 23rd bday they gave us carrot cake with a candle which was a nice touch and tasted terrific. We also ordered an apricot & chestnut tart which no one at the table liked at all. There are too many good restaurants around Logan Square for me to bother returning to Lula."
