A word from Lüke San Antonio
San Antonio is now home to acclaimed Chef John Besh’s restaurant, Lüke, on the city's famed Riverwalk, Besh's first restaurant outside of his home state of Louisiana. The casual chic bistro features a menu of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques served in a warm and inviting space of stylish vintage interior, situated in San Antonio's popular downtown district.

At the helm of the kitchen of Lüke is Executive Chef John Russ, born and raised in New Orleans. At Restaurant August, Chef Russ began to form the relationship with John Besh and he learned the importance of forming relationships with farmers and fisherman, which would later be reinforced by his time working on farms in Alabama, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Chef Russ returned to the Besh Restaurant Group as Chef de Cuisine on the invitation of Chef Besh.

To complement its cuisine, Lüke offers an extensive wine list and beer selection.

  • "Get yourself a reservation for Tuesday night and get down there. If you like oysters along with good louisiana food, the scene can't be beat."

  • "Although the food was good, not exceptional, the web description of German inspired French/New Orleans was not to be found. My party said the shrimp and grits were alright but not inspiring. The ribs were very good. I had the steak - it was fair, certainly not aged and full of flavor. My biggest complaint, noise. We could hardly converse, and after the meal was over we hurried out. I believe the manager noted it too, but she failed to come by during the meal. Serving bread in what I consider to be bar napkins was a little odd. Service was decent but the wait staff kept inverting the seating arrangement and gave us all the wrong orders. Afterwards we agreed it probably isn't a place we would come back to again."

  • "We booked for Restaurant Week, the time when restaurants get to show off their philosophy, their talent, and their signature to people who may have never been or thought they could afford to go. I love Chef John Besh. Watch his show on PBS as often as possible. I was so looking forward to introducing Luke to my husband. I've been for lunch once over a year ago and enjoyed it. We walked in to a menu that did nothing to showcase Chef Besh's philosophy or Chef John Russ' creative talents. Dry short rib with a replacement that was no better. Kimchee for starter? Didn't understand that. Only saver was the bread pudding named after Chef Besh's son. What an overall disappointment."

  • "Our experience started out with the elevator taking us beyond the main floor of the restaurant. One of the cooks very kindly escorted us back downstairs and then notified the hostess of our arrival. Our waiter was professional and helpful. When asked his opinion of the menu, he did not hesitate to tell us his personal favorite dishes. We ordered the frog legs based on his recommendation as an appetizer, and they were amazing! For the main course, my husband ordered the étouffée and I ordered the shrimp and grits. The flavor of both the dishes was superb! The only critique I have of the restaurant is of the napkins. It seemed odd to me to have such a pristine atmosphere and use what looked like dishrags for the napkins."

  • "Great Happy hour prices.. Half off drafts..50cent oysters. Everyone behind the bar seem to not want to be there. Not many smiles. Will only go there for Happy Hour"

  • "This was the second time we ate at Luke and this time we took my in-laws. They loved it! The food has delightful flavors and is generally very good. Portion sizes are reasonable to small which is great! I recommend going during happy hour or on Tuesdays before 8. They will split plates and serve 1/2 portions on each. So far there has not been a plate charge for this which i really appreciate! The food tends to be spicey and well seasoned. The food is all very well balanced and offers complex flavors. Enjoy! Note: the hard ceilings and floors make it abit noisy when it is busy."

  • "Had great food, drinks and company to show them the gem that Luke is! Really love the open feel and great service. Thanks"

  • "Food was terrific and service was attentive, knowledgable and friendly. While the San Antonio location lacks the intimacy and character of Besh's New Orleans location, we had a very enjoyable evening. Basically, in NO you know you're by the Quarter while in SA you can't escape the fact you're on the Riverwalk."

  • "My boyfriend and I decided to have our date night here. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the crab étouffée and my hunny had the ribeye, both five stars and cooked to perfection. However, our waiter was very un attentive. There was also an older women checking on the customers that gave me a weird vibe and had an eery feel to her. Overall, I had a very nice time and will be returning soon"

  • "We were visiting San Antonio and wanted to enjoy a special dinner down on the River Walk. While searching on-line, I was surprised to see a John Bess restaurant, Luke. I couldn't pass up the opportunity. We ordered the special appetizer, a tray of pâté and meats. It was excellent. For entres, my wife ordered the gnocchi and I, the shrimp and grits with a few oysters added to the dish. Both were fantastic! Great favors and prepared perfectly. The presentation of each dish was excellent. We ordered a key lime pie for dessert which was wonderful as well. We were seated at a quiet table overlooking the River Walk andtheservice was prompt and professional. Can't wait to go there again."

  • "My husband's birthday dinner was fantastic. Luke is his favorite San Antonio restaurant and the staff and chef made this dinner extra special."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "We were very disappointed with our experience at Luke. It took probably 15 minutes to be greeted after being seated. After getting our drinks the waiter stumbled through explaining the special starter, which turned out to be nothing like he described. After taking our order, we didn't see our waiter again until we were well past done with our entrees. We had to flag down another server to get a drink refill after sitting empty halfway through the meal. Keep in mind they were not the least bit busy. My steak was cooked well but was covered in an extremely salty broth. I couldn't even find a manager to speak to. I can easily overlook a few miscues but there was nothing good about our meal, especially for over $100."

  • "My daughter wanted me to pick a place to celebrate my birthday. I had been at Luke's once before and thought your food was great so suggested we come again. Except for the noise level everything was great. I would recommend Luke's for any celebration or evening out. If the weather is nice the outdoor dining is great."

  • "Happy hour was awesome!! The Gulf Oysters were wonderful. The meat pies were hot and flavorful, not to mention fifty cents a piece!! Can't wait to go again!!"

  • "The entire experience this evening was fantastic. We entertained family from out of state and friends from here and all were treated like royalty. Jay, the waiter, was perfect and the food was excellent."

  • "There was going an event on the second floor, and there was noise. Sometimes I couldn't even hear what I was saying. Besides that everything was good, service, food, and cocktails."

  • "Solid but not wowed by Luke, though not entirely their fault. There was an event upstairs & it was insanely loud. Not sure if it is possible create some sort of boundary between upstairs & downstairs or perhaps some sound dampening or acoustical panels for sound absorption. We ordered Luke burger and étouffée. The burger was solid, filling & with caramelized onions. The étouffée was excellent, but they were out of the wine we wanted. A replacement was suggested, which we agreed to but it was a disappointment. The wine was lacking flavor, but it was comped & we appreciate that gesture. For dessert we had the excellent bread pudding. Our waiter was a gentlemen & very attentive. We'll give it another chance. Hopefully not so loud next time."

  • "Luke's gumbo is superb! My husband is from Louisiana and he "licked" the bowl clean. The service is also worth mentioning. The staff is attentive without being overbearing."

  • "I let them know it was our 10th Anniversary and they took such good care of us!"

  • "Luke is happening on Tuesday! The food was excellent and the happy hour pricing was great! I took my wife for a date night and we had a good time enjoying many tasty courses. Try the meat pies and zucchini sliders! The charbroiled oysters were good as well. Everything we ordered had a diverse flavor and was enjoyable. The hard floors, walls, and ceilings do make it noisy but it seemed to quiet down as the sun set."

  • "Service and food has not been better here. Javier was the server, got to meet the chef, and made it to the majestic in time for our show. Thank you John Besh for bringing this gem to SA."

  • "food well prepared and tasty; friendly service but (acceptably) slow; restaurant very noisy -- not conducive for casual dinner conversation"

  • "In my trips to Luke, I have never been disappointed! The staff and management have always been top notch. Whether it is for happy hour and their fantastic specials, or dinner before catching a show at The Majestic Theater, Luke is my spot. They always make it a point to ask if I am going to a show to ensure that my meal comes out in a timely matter that won't make me late for the curtain. They also always have a great selection of Texas beer on draft! I love Luke San Antonio and will return again! Make sure you leave room for dessert, and try Brendan's Bread pudding!"

  • "We had an excellent overall experience with Very good food, good service, nice setting (although a bit loud for casual conversation) and reasonable prices. Will definitely try again and recommend to friends. Would help a lot if they offered free or subsidized parking for diners."

  • "The food was definitely tasty. The oysters very fresh, and the drum special well prepared. However, the drinks came out staggered too much apart. One had to ask for iced tea as it never came, and then had to ask for bread and butter before entrees would have been finished. Only our birthday person was asked if she wanted desert, and no inquiry by our server as to whether we wanted coffee or after dinner drinks. All in all the service was off just enough at every stage to be noticed, which is definitely not what you want. The noise level was also fairly high, but I suspect the outdoor patio would have been okay on that note."

  • "I asked for a romantic table, it was given away and we sat by the door, which kept being left open. Many bugs and noise. Only our wonderful waitress seemed to care."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "The food was wonderful! Will go back to continue trying new things. A wide variety of what is served is the greatest part about the menu and its in a great location!"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "This was my third visit to Luke and it was a disappointment. The service was slow and a little disorganized to start. After waiting about 15 minutes to place a drink order, our waiter returned to tell us they were out of sparkling water. The food was good, but not up to the standard that I had experienced in the past and definitely not what you'd expect from a John Besh establishment. Our waiter eventually came around and was much more attentive after we placed out initial orders."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "Nice location and the food was reasonably priced. Happy hour until 8pm instead of the usual 6 or 7 was also great. Food and wine specials during happy hour!"

  • "The food was delicious but the service was excellent. Our waiter was so attentive and helpful. Will definitely go back!"

  • "Mr. Besh would had been disappointed as well. It being Spurs weekend, I can understand the excitement akin to a sports bar rather than a fine dining establishment. There was food on the floor next to our table. A banana peel slipping accident waiting to happen. Our server was forewarned and the mess was promptly removed. I assume from a previous diner. Waited too long for my cocktail. My white wine was served in a dirty wine glass(looked like red wine). The chef saturated my seafood entre with too much salt. It's seafood! Suffice it to say, that will be my last dining experience at Luke's."

  • "It's like having a little taste of NOLA in SA. I would've preferred sitting on the balcony but it seemed tame for a Friday night. Although when we were leaving, there were a lot of people at the bar."
