A word from Lucques
Since opening in 1998 Lucques has garnered extraordinary accolades and is now recognized as one of the country’s best restaurants. It's California cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences is served in the warm and intimate setting of the rustic carriage house of the original Harold Lloyd estate.

One of the reasons for the all the acclaim is the Sunday Supper, the night that best exemplifies the original mission of owners Chef Suzanne Goin and Sommelier Caroline Styne, by offering seasonal prix fix menus that re-create the atmosphere of a relaxed family dinner.

  • "The maître de and the server were most attentive. A good feeling was achieved upon entering the venue. The ambience was fantastic, the décor had an inviting, comfortable, relaxed feeling. Try the mojito, made with ginger beer. Absolutely divine!! We indulged in a yellow peach salad, with a notable hit of arugula and mint flavors. Scrumptious! The salmon with couscous and summer squash, was served to perfection. My guest for lunch was most impressed with Lucques."

  • "Corn soup was intolerably spicy. Salad was OK nothing special, just lettuce and cherry tomatoes with average dressing. Chicken was OK, sauce overpowered it and was very salty so who knows. Desserts were the best thing they offered. Service was good. You sit so close to the next table that when that person gets up to leave they knock over the wine glass at your table. It is also hard to concentrate on talking since you have to talk over both neighboring tables and the room itself. Best to eat out doors. It is very distracting, Not sure why this restaurant has all the hoopla. It is just trendy and overpriced."

  • "The food at Lucques is always outstanding. However, this time the evening was a bit off. Perhaps it was because of DineLA the restaurant was very crowded. We had two tables pushed together that faced the outside and, inspite of one of the bussers stabilizing the tables, they were rocky all night. The service was a bit slow, and at times it was hard to get someone's attention. Our server Isabel was wonderful and I will indeed go back but will avoid the table in this location."

  • "Maybe I'm a food snob but don't see how this restaurant made it to #5 on Jonathan Gold's list. Food was very good, garden outside was pretty but tables were plastic. Service was nice. I suspect I have a bigger issue with Jonathan Gold than with the restaurant."

  • "The DineLA menu felt a bit constrained as there were not many choices, but that is only negative thing I can find to say about my dinner. The food was marvelous, the service terrific, and the ambiance on the back patio was lovely. We were seated right away despite being a bit early for the reservation, and the appetizers, entrees and desserts were truly wonderful. Don't miss it!"

  • "I picked Suzanne Goin's Lucques for the experience, and the rave. But my expectations fell flat with the crowded seating space (I was facing the bathroom watching people in line anxiously waiting to go in, something that is expected at a CPK or Cheesecake Factory chain restaurant). Buss boys buzzing in an out of the place with plate/glass crates from the bar to the kitchen or wherever...We received average attention from the waitress, our appetizers and cheese plate arrived about the same time, about 15 min. after we had our bottle of wine worked, Overall, my experience was below average for the money spent, nothing to brag about...Sorry."

  • "Flavorless fish, and the food took forever to arrive. I don't blame the servers, who were attentive and pleasant. Slow arrival for food is almost always the fault of the kitchen. The hake was garbage, the salmon mediocre. The tomatoes in the tomato salad were bland. This was overpriced food that had salt and butter but no real taste."

  • "This was our third experience at Lucques, so obviously we think it's worth returning. The heirloom tomato salad was gorgeous and featured incredibly ripe and tasty fruit, but the corn soup was little more than corn cooking water. It was so thin, and not very tasty! Entrees were excellent, and desserts were fabulous. The plum tart was most memorable. The sommelier helped us select a wine that was really too young and sharp, and did not complement our dinner. Alas! But overall, the food was well prepared, the service attentive, and the atmosphere very pleasant. We'll be back!"

  • "I came here for the first time with a group of friends. 2 of our friends were visiting from New York and are real foodies. We all were amazed by each and every bite of food. It was beautifully presented and everything tasted great. Our waiter was knowledgeable and fun and we enjoyed joking around with him. My New York friends remarked that I made a great choice in selecting Lucques. The s'mores dessert was unbelievably good! I would definitely return."

  • "Tuesday night, early reservation at 7:30, shouldn't be too much to ask for a table outside right? Sorry, there are no tables available. Really? Looks wide open to me and I know you can only request a table outside as they can't guarantee one. And no banquettes natch right? We'll look what we finally got; a tiny table at the end of a banquette in the back that the Hostess then pulled the adjoining table away from making for a postage stamp of a table. The lovely waiter (and I mean that) put the table back allowing us to actually fit plates on the table. Great food and service as always. Funny thing though, there continued to be several empty tables outside...."

  • "Great atmosphere and beautiful outdoor space. That said, the food was average at best. We went out not knowing it was Dine Out LA so maybe that was why the food was so pedestrian. There was nothing special about the bland corn soup, nicely cooked but ultimately boring chicken, and okay desserts. Just moved here from NY and my wife attributes my disappointment to NY vs LA dining but I would definitely never return or recommend Lucques to anyone."

  • "I wish We could have had a better experience. we had the pre fix meal and the appetizer came out within 10 minutes of ordering, great! our entrees didn't come out for an hour afterwards!!! the server kept on telling us 10 minutes, as we saw other tables getting their dinner. this wait ruined the entire mood for us, giving us no choice but to leave early and refuse the desert we paid for regardless."

  • "We sat in the lovely back area;you'd never know that you were near busy Melrose Ave. I was disappointed that the menu is so limited. We are fish eaters and there were only 2 fish dishes and 1 shellfish dish. We don't eat salmon (the market fish of the day) in restaurants because my husband makes it better than any restaurant, so my husband ordered the hake and I had the diver scallops with beluga lentils, wild mushrooms, braised duck and red wine. The hake was bland and boring and the scallop dish was ill-conceived. Creativity is nice, but only if it makes sense. In this case, the lentils overpowered the delicate taste of the scallops. It was also too salty. I had a glass of Chardonnay and I didn't think that it was very good either."

  • "This is my second time at Lucques. I just had to take my good friend there (she also lives out of town)!! It's an experience! Such creativity! Such combinations of flavors! Yet the dishes are not so far-out that the food loses the sense of a homey, satisfying meal. The service was professional--a nice presentation of warm friendliness without being pestering. It's such a treat eating at Lucques! Now on the not so positive side: the desserts were a bit disappointing. I couldn't quire figure this out. We ordered the ricotta fritters and the orange blossom panna cotta. The fritters were REALLY heavy, particularly after a full meal. And there seemed to be way too much going on with the panna cotta. Still a GREAT experience! I'll go back!"

  • "The good news: Lucques's food is still tops. Sunday supper was delicious -- starting with extremely fresh gazpacho, to perfectly cooked fish, and ending with fruit and brioche pudding. Fantastic. Memorable. The bad news: Service was mediocre to non-existent once we were seated (hostess was great). First, we never felt welcomed. It took forever to order drinks and the order came out wrong. Then forever to order our entrees, which is remarkable since it's a prix fixe menu where the only choice is which of 2 entrees to have. Then the gazpacho came without spoons. For most of the rest of the meal, no server was to be seen. Then, at the end, no one ever offered coffee or an after-dinner drink. All in all mediocre service."

  • "Lucques was one of the best dining experiences we have had in quite some time. We both ordered fish, ling cod and white sea bass. They were cooked to perfection and the accompanying vegetables were a compliment to the fish. Salad dressing was outstanding and it was obvious that this was made to compliment our salads. Our dessert also was outstanding. I recommend Lucques for a special occasion or just a wonderful evening meal. We will return."

  • "Food done to perfection. Best beef short rib I have ever eaten. Service was attentive but not overly so as to be annoying. Waitstaff made solid recommendations when asked. Pre-dinner cocktails (kumquat with arugula simple syrup and gin) were superb. I will be back!"

  • "Wonderful, casual, highest-quality cooking with professional, friendly service. Booked an early table on purpose and it was nearly empty, and we were made to feel like we were part of the prime-time crowd (in a good way). Other early guests (a very young couple on a date, a small family with infant, senior couple on anniversary night, reunion of college friends, a large party out in the back open-ceilinged room) were likewise welcomed and treated very cordially as special guests. The suckling pig was awesome - perfectly pulled, packed, crisped, with the correct balance of accompaniments in texture, taste, volume; desserts also awesome. This was our second time here from out of town and we were very happy that it's still a top-notch place."

  • "We had an excellent dinner to celebrate my son's graduation from UCLA. He did the research when we asked him to pick the restaurant and we were not disappointed. The setting was a beautiful indoor/outdoor seating area and the server was excellent and they even decorated his dessert plate. The food was amazing. Seasoning on everything was perfect.   • "NOBODY came to our table so we just waited for 10 minutes. I grabbed one waitress and asked whether we can order our food. The waitress told me she is not the server for our table but she just took our order. The waitress who was not entitled to our table friendly served, cleaned and checked upon us with the food throughout the night. However, there was one WAITER who asked us whether our food is good 3 times. I could easily assume that he was the ONE for our table. He did not do anything for our table except asking us questions 3 times. Even for our desserts, the waitress got our order and served them for us. YET, the WAITER gave us the check and took the check in the end, which was annoying and not understandable."

  • "It has been a year or so since I visited and I was surprised how much less everything was. The food was less delicious and less well prepared, the wait staff was VERY MUCH less able. Wow. It seems as if the best of the staff were shifted to AOC. My daughter and I both agree that Tavern is better than Lucques now. Just an absolute surprise. Still good food but now where near what it was. I do not plan to return anytime soon."
