A word from Luau - Grand Hyatt
Return to the days of ancient Hawaii. Where stories and music passed down from kupuna (elders) are shared with you, our honored guests.

The most significant style of celebration in ancient Hawaii was the luau, held to honor kings, gods and guests. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Luau welcomes you to join us for this time-honored event. The feast is sure to satisfy and the entertainment will keep you enchanted as you learn the traditional dance of the many locales of Polynesia. We invite you to experience the beauty, romance and adventure. It is an evening that you will always remember.
The blowing of the conch shell begins the evening as the soothing sounds of a Contemporary Hawaiian trio lilt through the air. The royal spread includes cuisine from the melting pot of cultures making up Hawaii. After dinner prepare to be enchanted by the historic yet exotic dances of Polynesia, from the islands of Tahiti, Samoa, and New Zealand, to our own Hawaii

Diner Reviews
  • "Lots of food, good entertainment, kid friendly. Several people had been to a previous Luau at the Grand Hyatt. If I was on the island, I would do it again."

  • "It was not what we expected for the Luau advertised online or the investment of time and money. We finally found the Luau on a 4th floor lawn, convention style rows of dinner tables and plastic chairs. The meal was served buffet style with overdone, dry meats -no wild pig from a pit that had cooked for 24 hrs in the sand. The performance was presented like a dinner show, not a Luau. It rained out at 8PM. We left thinking it was over and walked to the lobby where I complained to the concierge who said it was an independent contractor, and not their problem. At that point anyone could walk back in or out for the Luau show, free of charge. We heard it resumed but had no idea. HUGE waste of $324 for three unsatisfactory buffet dinners."

  • "The weather reports gave almost certain chance of afternoon/evening rain, yet the Luau was held outdoors without even an awning for the stage! And rain it did! ...And winds blew over large stage decorations and stands. We saw this luau last year; I estimate we only got about half the show. The fire-knife guy gave a quick conclusion under a sheltered area (which wasn't used for the evening setup because...?) and that was it! Show over, no apologies, etc. There appeared to be at least three "large" outdoor dinner/party events that evening; the Hyatt just stretched itself too far, given the weather prediction. Kudos to the staff for the many beach towels appearing when the first shower hit. We'll do Smith's luau next time."

  • "Have been to other luaus & this one was a definite disappointment! No reserved seating I was told & then all the front tables were marked reserved! It was difficult to find 4 seats for my family together so despite arriving early we were forced into a far back corner. My kids couldn't see because of all the adults sitting in front of us so they were immediately frustrated & bored. We couldn't hear the MC very well but he must have been funny as the people up front were laughing. Would not recommend when u look at price vs. what u get!"

  • "We have been to numerous resort and commercial style luaus in Hawaii over the past 25 years. This one was presented as genuine, original and with entertainment that was truly set to give the audience a great time. And the view.......doesn't get any better!"

  • "This is our 4th lauau and while the food was better than some of the others, the show was not upto par. The emcee was charismatic and costumes pretty, but it just didn't feel as 'authentic' as those on Mauai or Ohau (Polynesian Cultural Center). We still had a nice time and food was unlimited, as were drinks"

  • "Just too masstouristy in the bad way. We had expected something better from Grand Hyatt."

  • "A great time in a beautiful location. A fun show, good service, surprisingly good food for a luau--a great time!"

  • "We were not impressed. The table was so far away, we couldn't see without standing. The waiters were more concerned with being funny and flirting than waiting on the rest of us and they were noisy during the show. The food was good and plentiful. I would have liked it if they had announced last call on the buffet's instead of turning around to find all of it was gone, desserts, too."

  • "Kalua pig was the best around and enjoyed the man who prepared it..informative and funny. The host was also very entertaining and engaging with audience participation. The musicians were great and the dancers were very fun to watch, but one of the men was a bit unprofessional with ongoing laughing directed toward one of the other dancers. The man demonstrating how to make flower leis talked with someone running the business about checks and other things, not acknowledging our presence once. Felt unprofessional. Prior to the show a few dancers allowed the kids to try a skill..very cool experience. The location was beautiful with views of the beach but had a backyard feel with the plastic chairs, rows of tables and a big plain stage."

  • "Small food portions and very overpriced . Really strange little man kept sneaking up behind to remove plates. Service snail slow. Had reservations an had to wait 15 minutes to be seated with plenty of available tables in sight."

  • "The hula dancers were excellent with a lot of variety and action. MC had a great voice and comedic timing. Service was impeccable!"

  • "This was our first Luau and we really enjoyed it! The open bar is a plus and the buffet food was really good, there was a variety of food to choose from, but the dessert table was especially to die for! The macadamia nut cake and the coconut mousse was particularly yummy. The show was also very good, the dancers were very impressive, especially lived the Haka. Waiters were also very attentive and kept passing to check if you needed a refill. Would thoroughly recommend this Luau:)"

  • "Expected more show and more history; more options at the bar."

  • "First it cost $206 for a couple and for hawaii that's not too bad but we didn't feel like it was worth it. The luau took place in a small garden in the back corner of the resort (no beach view) with a small stage and cheap plastic chairs. The food was delicious. The show was decent, nothing outrageous. There was no ambience to make it feel like a 'once in a lifetime event'. The entire event dragged. Definitely our least favorite event on our honeymoon. Definitely a shame because we were really looking forward to it. However, everything else at the resort was second to none."

  • "This has been my first and only luau, so I can't compare it to others, but we had a great time! The food was delicious, with a little something for everyone (salad, bread, poi, fish, pork, chicken, pineapple and other fruit, pasta salad, many types of desserts, etc.) and unlimited mai tais. Service was great (our waiter was very attentive and brought refills during the show without distraction). The entertainment began with a little group participation in a hula dance - optional to go on stage and not too embarrassing. The professionals then performed what I would guess to be at least 10 different songs and dances over the course of the evening. Overall lots of fun - recommend arriving early if you are in a large group or want a good view."

  • "This was my first luau. It was a great experience. The entertainment was lively and engaging. It is group seating so get friendly and the open bar certainly helps with that. Staff was friendly and accessible considering the size of the dinner. The menubis broad enough to fit all tastes. I believe there are even a few vegataian options."

  • "It rained the night before so they moved out luau inside due to a 50% chance of rain. It ended up being a beautiful night and we had our luau indoors. We were really disappointed. They did offer to refund and reschedule which was appreciated but we couldn't do that due to our travel schedule. The entertainment was great and food was pretty good. Would have probably been great if only outside."

  • "The Luau at the Hyatt offered many of the traditional Hawaiian foods. There was good variation in the food choices as well. The entertainment was exciting and pleasant, with professional hula dancers and fire dancers. Despite a few rain drops, which the staff at the Hyatt helped circumvent by passing out towels, it was a great evening. I definitely recommend it."

  • "Great show, particularly the fire act towards the end. The only set back was that it was held indoors due to weather conditions."

  • "We had a great time. My husband and I enjoyed the atmosphere and the show! Food was great, especially the desserts (coconut cake and pineapple upside down cake) and the crafts were fun to see too. Would definitely recommend this to anyone traveling and looking for some Hawaiian culture. Beautiful night!"

  • "The show, food, and waiter service were excellent. Our waiter provided our group with drinks throughout the two and one-half hours as well as removed all used dishes promptly, There was a large variety of food, all of which were excellent, Despite the large crowd the two buffet lines moved very quickly with little wait, and no wait on return visit or for the many assorted desserts. The show was very entertaining. After the show we were able to take pictures with the performers. The MC did a fine job introducing the various dances and explaining their origins. We were somewhat disappointed that the luau was moved indoors but the weather warranted the move. But the location was very large and open with an outdoor feel open feel to it."

  • "Good entertainment and great food. Get there early. The line is long and if you are at the end you end up in the back of the luau where it is hard to see and harder to hear. Reservations thru open table are not pre paid. Paying is a separate line. Have most of your party stand in the entrance line and send one person to pay so you can go in when it is your time."

  • "Ridiculously expensive. Other luaus more authentic and enjoyable."

  • "I loved the Luau, everything was great. The few things that were not Ideal were the seating seemed really tight, we could hardly get in and out of our seats. Also we were on the 2nd row of tables and the music seemed really loud."
    Dined on 12/31/2012
  • "It seemed to me that booking thru Open Table gets you a seat in the far back tables instead of going thru the Concierge. Then after getting seated in the back the waiters serving the middle tables in front of you continue to serve drinks to those tables which means they are in your way so you can't view the stage. For the money they charge everyone should get a good seat."

  • "I think what made this luau a big success was the combination of entertainment and variety of food. We were with a wedding party (the couple were married the day before) so the luau was suggested as an activity where everyone can pay for themselves but be seated close together and have fun together. Frankly, my hubby was a bit relucant to go because he could not understand why the price is that expensive ($93 per person) but I'm glad that he loved the experience. He told me he was happy that we tried going to the luau because he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the entertainment. The food and desserts were excellent and we're happy that they included the traditional turkey, gravy and cranberry."

  • "I would not recommend the luau at The Grand Hyatt Kauai. We stood in line for some time, there were long plastic tables set up, with uncomfortable chairs. The entertainment was a bit lackluster, and it was difficult to see from where we were sitting. The food was just OK, there were only a few choices, and again, long lines to get through the buffet. For $100 per person, we would have been better off going to a nice restaurant on the beach.... unfortunately."

  • "We were so fortunate to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with this Luau at the Hyatt. This was our first, but the people with us said it was their best out of three! The food was EXCELLENT and we came with low expectations. The Hyatt and Tihati know how to do this right. A great night with quality entertainment and food."

  • "Food and entertainment were good. What wasn't too wonderful was geting a bill for $195.83 for two people when the reservations were made at $75/each."
    Dined on 11/22/2012
  • "The show probably would have been better if held outside. Not worth holding indoors. Too much money and not enough effect."
    Dined on 11/15/2012
  • "The food, for the most part only fair, doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for this luau. The setting is glorious. The show is a real pleasure. So the buffet didn't rock my world, the evening was a delight."

  • "I went to the Luau with low expectations. Communal seating is not something I enjoy. Still don't. The food was actually good(all you can eat) and the open bar was a nice surprise. But the entertainment saved the night for me. The emcee/singer was fun and entertaining and the hula dancers and fire dancer were great. I probably wouldn't go to another Luau, but I think it is something you have to do once when in Hawaii."

  • "Aloha, I am a concierge with Expedia on the Island of Kauai. I booked this luau for my guests. The ratings I filled in are based on their feedback to me. How to I get a Concierge Sign On? I am limited to 3 bookings a day. This limits my ability to be of service to my guests. Many Mahalos!"
