Diner Reviews
  • "My expectations were high given the owner/chef. We went for lunch. The menu was OK and the prices seemed high for lunch. My companion had the salmon. The portion was incredibly small. $19 for lunch and it was probably a 2 oz portion. I had the quiche and salad. The salad consisted of rocket dressed in an olive oil dressing. That's it. The quiche was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Dessert was the highlight. We had the tapioca brule which was fabulous and the beignets. Not sure I'll be rushing back; which is too bad. The layout of the restaurant is nice."

  • "Loulay is a delightful glimpse into a little piece of France."

  • "We went for pre-show dinner. We sat upstairs at a table for two (wonderful spot!). We ordered from the small and medium menus and shared. Every dish was delicious. Our server was attentive. Can't say enough good about the place and the food. Loved the decor, too. We'll be back."

  • "Expectations were high, and they exceeded them with ease. Food was light and delightful"

  • "The food was so good, everything we ordered was wildly delicious. All the different food combos along with their presentations were a culinary adventure"

  • "We were there on a Monday evening before a concert, and we had a very good experience. We both had the lamb, which we thought was very good. We thought the ambience was very good as well. We were there early, so the noise level was only moderate. Overall we would go back, and we would recommend this restaurant. It's very convenient to many hotels, being the hotel restaurant for the Sheraton."

  • "Went for a birthday (2 of us). Food always great, service and ambiance always wonderful. Thierry is the consummate host."

  • "Took my wife there to celebrate a big birthday. We both enjoyed the quality and presentation. Highlight of our overnight stay in Seattle."

  • "We arrived at 11:30AM and the restaurant was very quiet; by noon it was full. It has a casual, open kitchen bistro atmosphere. My lunch partner said her pea soup was bland, as well as her green salad. My salad was incredibly fresh and full of flavor as well as the bourride, which was fresh and very flavorful."

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday and had a lovely meal. We shared the Duck Confit Sliders to start, which were out of this world (the sauce is amazing). I had the Halibut entrée, and that was excellently prepared with great flavor. He had the rib eye steak, and that was a bit fatty, though tasty. He also had a pecan ice cream dessert, and I had the Chef's Hot Chocolate, which was the perfect way to end the meal. We sat in the balcony (in very comfy chairs) and really didn't notice much in the way of noise. Our server was a bit perfunctory and didn't come across as warm and friendly, but she was prompt and attentive enough. We'd go back."

  • "After eating at Rovers over the years, I tried this place due to the chef. Overall I would say that the food was good to very good, but wasn't memorable. The service was good, waiter was very attentive. The ambience was good, although the table we had already had the varnish peeling off, strange since this is a brand new restaurant. I would go back to try different dishes."

  • "Excellent food-smaller portions. Pretty much as expected from the Chef in the Hat"

  • "Loulay's food is as good as Rover's. Keep in mind when making a reservation that that there are seating options which may affect your experience: at a booth for more quiet dining, or on the floor where there is more activity. Contrary to some other reviewers, we felt that the menu items were accurately described, and were not too small. Although we certainly will miss Rover's Grand Menu Degustation with Scot's wine pairing, we will definitely return to Chef Thierry's Loulay."

  • "I was expecting more. The menu was very limited. The wait was just too long to conduct business in 1 1/2 hr. We left in about 2 hours. French fries were soggy. My fish was good. Salad needed a bit more of something."

  • "The chef in the hat ambles through his new downtown restaurant greeting diners with ease. The food, ambience , and service are a tribute to him and should have diners flocking to his table. Delightful dining experience on all counts. Can't wait to try breakfast or brunch. Hat's off to Loulay!"

  • "Although the menu is a one-pager- it offers a great variety of food options. Something for any one. The food quality and taste was absolutely perfect, starting with the amuse-bouche (which quite honestly I could have just had a soup bowl of with bread and called it good!). The wine list if complimentary. The other excellent thing is that everything is priced at value. I expected to pay a lot more for Chef Thierry, and was pleasantly surprised. Good thinking! Last- thanks Chef Thierry for going table side. It was thrill to shake your hand and chat with you. Give this place a try- it's good!!!"

  • "Poor service. Orders missing items. Server needs more education on ingredients"
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "The food, drink, atmosphere, and music selection are all fantastic, but the best touch is that the Chef in the Hat comes personally to every table and chats with each of his customers. This is a total class act, and knocks it out of the park on customer service and satisfaction."

  • "a little disappointing in terms of quality of food (and quantity) but great wine's list. This is not a French restaurant, rather a French touch restaurant"

  • "I have been wanting to try the burger and frites. Added the duck egg. I ate it all. It was delicious."

  • "This was our second visit, and we enjoyed it just as much as our first. The food (chicken, salmon, house salad, onion soup) was delicious and the service was outstanding. Some tables are quite close to each other, but we were fortunate to sit at a table that allowed easy conversation without feeling as though we were talking to everyone around us. Will definitely return."

  • "Food wasn't as good as I expected and you weren't sure about portions to know how much to order. All the great media did not prepare me for the actual experience. It seemed like you were offering selections more because they were different rather than great."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Excellent in all phases, highly recommend it for a wonderful occasion."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "Food was average...seemed to be an "over-reach" in the kitchen to make it "look" great. What's with the expense account wine list?"
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "It's a cute little space, and the service was attentive, but the food was disappointing. The onion soup was much too sweet, and puff pastry made too frequent an appearance. The lamb had gristle. For French bistro, I'd take Bastille or Le Pichet anyday."

  • "Really wonderful flavors and preparations of TEENY, expensive portions. Still happy that we tried Loulay, but not sure we'd rush back. The noise in the restaurant was bizarre. One man's voice was SO grating and loud. I think it was just the acoustics of the room, sending his voice to our booth throughout our meal. Our server was solemn and unfriendly, though attentive and professional. I wish that I felt more comfortable and welcome. The whole experience was a bit precious and overwrought for my taste. Wouldn't think that would be the case in one of Thierry R's restaurants. Maybe it was just that night?"

  • "We were anticipating a foodie experience at this restaurant. The food was good and well executed, but not particularly noteworthy. Not having the founding chef participating on a daily level probably impacted the experience."

  • "Smoked Salmon was very nicely balanced with flavors and a bit of texture with the Asian pear. House salad was fine, fresh leaves and goat cheese, but I felt needed something else to balance the dressing. Halibut was nice, perhaps teetering on a little too much done, but I do not think I would go again as I found I am not a fan of caramelized fennel, but perhaps that is just a personal preference. Desert was a delicious macerated strawberry panna cotta with mint oil. Delicious. Spouse had Crab Beignets, Lamb with pancetta with no complaints. While it was an nice environment it was a little too noisy for polite conversation and very easy to listen to the next table's conversations as there was barely enough room to walk between tables."

  • "Great for dinner before theatre/movie. Fresh seasonal greens and seafood, full bar and extensive wine list. Wait staff efficient and attentive."

  • "Excellent food. Liked the listing of portion size - small, med, & large plates. Food was fresh, elegantly served, and delicious. Chef came around to chat with us. We arrived early 5:45 and service was prompt. Left around 7:40 and the place was hopping, but still did not have to wait long for our check."

  • "Two of us ordered 2 small plates and 3 medium plates and left satisfied but not stuffed. We had the chef add 1 extra scallop to the "medium" scallop plate, which was just 1 scallop...seemed odd. The scallops themselves were extremely salty, but the chef prepared a new dish almost immediately when we mentioned it to our server. We loved our table up on the first level balcony - beautiful vantage point to enjoy the atmosphere. We were disappointed to wait for our table for about 10 minutes when we had a reservation. The house red was yummy - a Washington blend."

  • "Our first trip to Loulay and it's now my favorite. It was absolutely perfect. The food, service, and wine was amazing. The famous "chef in the hat" even stopped by to say hello. The most surprising thing of the evening was that the menu was quite affordable. Still raving about the food. We will be back!"

  • "First-time visit. Went there for our wedding anniversary as someplace special, it was. The food was great, the service was great...a great setting...ALL good."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The food is very good, but a bit pricey. But it's right downtown so they must pay a ton in rent, so I can understand it. Also try the more moderately priced sister-restaurant Luc, which is farther away from the business district but very nice and tasty."

  • "It was our second time at Loulay and both the service and the food had successfully transitioned from uneven quality of our first visit. The food and service were excellent. We noticed that the staff had to manage at least two large parties, some couples, and lone diners at the busy bar and seemed to do that with unflustered seamless attention to all. The sign of experienced management. If you haven't been to the restaurant and are making reservations on line you should make a note in your request for the kind of area you want. I was with someone hard of hearing so we were given nice table upstairs away from the lower more action focused first floor. There is lively quality to first floor at tables or banquettes for more intimate seating."

  • "I love French food so this was right up my alley. I went alone as I was in town for business. This seemed to make the hostess uncomfortable and she really wanted to seat me in the bar with limited menu. Once we got over that it was pretty much smooth sailing. I think it's odd that a French place doesn't offer comp bread but ok. The scallops and foie were lovely. I would come back."

  • "Very much a Paris-like Bistrot atmosphere. Excellent food with attentive wait staff. Very nice wine list that is good for glasses, carafes, or full bottles. We will definitely return."

  • "If you are looking for an incredibly delicious gourmet hamburger, look no further than Loulay. I look forward to returning to try some of their other dishes."

  • "our reservation was for 8:30, we were there on time. We sat 22 minutes later. by the time we had our first bite 45 minutes have passed. the lady at the desk was extremely arrogant and kept rolling her eyes. this is the second time this happened"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "High ceilings, interesting adornments and trendy colors make Loulay an extremely inviting establishment. The menu is outstanding; however, the execution needs work. Brunch entrees were barely warm; potatoes were soggy; "smoked tomato hollandaise" was lovely hollandaise but there was no hint of tomato smoked or otherwise; chocolate nib popover was not a popover, rather a chocolate nib bread roll baked in a small popover pan (and quite overpriced for the size I think). I will definitely give Loulay another try or two, but am a bit surprised at these missteps after years of always exceptional dining experiences at Rovers and Luc. I'm perplexed the "Chef in the Hat" isn't paying a bit closer attention to his newest culinary endeavor."
