Diner Reviews
  • "While, Cosetta's has also been a favorite of ours we were excited to celebrate our daughters birthday at their new restaurant, however the food was average, I thought the menu was not very accommodating for a cross section of different tastes and the Italian dishes were trying to be to different/over the top instead of doing what they do best, the basics. We will stick to eating downstairs enjoying the classic pizza and pasta served cafeteria style."

  • "I had the lasagne and it was extremely salty. Did not finish the dish but took home leftovers for my husband to taste and he agreed that it was also extremely salty. The remaining members in our party like their dishes. I thought the service was quite slow for the restaurant only being half full due to 4th of July holiday weekend. I never give a "final verdict" on a restaurant based on only one visit, so I will be back at least one more time and then decide on future visits."

  • "We had planned for months to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Louis'. We thought a quiet, romantic Tuesday evening of Sinatra and our favorite food and wine would be the perfect way to do this. After spending 20 minutes parking the car, we walked unexpectedly into a hyper (hopping?), noisy (energetic? we had to shout) roomful of young people only a few of us from "the greatest generation". We LOVE young people, but we could barely hear our waiter, and Sinatra was only discernible in the restroom and stairway. I must confess I got a headache and couldn't wait to get out. The best part of the evening was dancing down the three levels of stairs to Sinatra. The remodeling is lovely, and could there be a place for quiet romance?"

  • "My wife and I had been to Cosetta's several times with family and friends and love the food and casual atmosphere, but we'd hadn't tried Louis' since they remodeled and added it for more elegant, sit-down meals. We were very happy with the food and the service was wonderful. We went to the patio for drinks, but passed on their 'very' abbreviated menu and opted to keep our reservation for dinner inside! The weather was perfect, so we were a little disappointed that we couldn't get the full menu outside. However, the food was wonderful and our servers were very efficient, polite and helpful. We split a primi and secondi, which was the perfect size and had wonderful flavors; Linguini alla Vongole & Gamberi Florentine. We will come back!"

  • "Being a former New Yorker, this place reminds me of "home". We went for a family dinner with relatives during the 4th of July, and had a great meal. We have been here before and the food is always delicious, the service is always good. We especially like their seafood and pasta. It wasn't very crowded this time, and therefore much quieter than usual. We even got to meet the chef (Go Vikings!). After dinner we went downstairs to the pastry shop and enjoyed some delicious desserts. Louis and Cossetta are our "go to" places whenever we want a taste of Italy."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Louis. The food was wonderful - I had the best lasagna I've ever eaten. The view of the cathedral is wonderful. If it is a nice day, being on the patio would be superb."

  • "We went to celebrate my in laws 67 yr anniversary as well as 2 other birthdays. It was so loud we could barely hear each other. Of the 6 meals, one had to be sent back as the chicken was under cooked. The other 5 meals were good."

  • "We weren't paying attention to the Xcel event calendar and booked a reservation the same night as a concert. We were able to get in timely and the server was up front that the kitchen was running a bit behind, but catching up. She brought bread and bruchetta to take the edge off while we waited. The space is very loud when crowded, but managable when it's a normal busy night. We were seated inside, but the outdoor space would be perfect for a nice night. Food was average. My son had spaghetti and meatballs (you can't go wrong at this space with that order), my husband had the rigatoni which had a nice spicy sausage, and I had chicken parm... which came out burnt so the ends were really chewy. Dessert was good enough."

  • "Couldn't get a table at a nearby fave, so decided to give Louis a try for a pre-concert dinner. Great space, including a lovely rooftop deck with cathedral view on a nice day. JAMMIN' on a pre-concert Saturday night, yet we got very good service and food. Parked at the ramp behind the building, kitty corner, for $10 (Xcel ramps were $20). Quick easy walk to Xcel after dinner. Thumbs up. Will be back!"

  • "Did not expect just average from Cossetta's Louis restaurant. Personally eating downstairs at the original Cossetta's restaurant had more atmosphere, energy and the food was just as good!"

  • "We were looking forward to our dinner at Louis with friends. None of us had been there before. We were disappointed with the menu and food choices overall. When our food was served only one pasta out of four entrees and three pastas was a real winner. We also did not appreciate having to pay $8 plus a tip when parking in the fine dinning restaurant, and had no other place to park. Overall not up to Cossetta's standard and I am not sure we will be back."

  • "Louis was the perfect "take it up a notch" restaurant for our birthday celebration. We already love the food and energy at Cossetta's so it was logical to try Louis - and they did not disappoint. The food and dining space was really lovely."

  • "Louis suffers by comparison to Cossetta's two floors below. The food was every bit as good as Cossetta's but not enough better to justify the increased price. Bar drinks were weak. Service was exemplary and enjoyable. I will definitely return, but will probably stay with the insalate and primi offerings."

  • "My sister and I went to have a fun and special dinner before a concert at the Excel. We had a great time and the food was excellent. The staff was super kind and checked in to make sure all our needs were met. It was a fun and special experience for us."

  • "Our server was very nice and attentive although she was quite busy. The food was very good. I especially liked the firm heavy pasta. The crème brulee free dessert was a very nice gift for our anniversary. You could use something in the olive oil that comes with the bread basket. Maybe some parmesan cheese or roasted garlic."

  • "Both my wife and I loved the experience at Louis. It was busy, but not overbearing. We were able to enjoy a nice dinner together on a Friday evening for what was our anniversary. I'd say the both of us have gotten used to great service when visiting restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul, on the occasions we make it out, and this was no different. Our waiter was very engaging, asking our interest in eating there that evening, and offering a couple complimentary things like an appetizer and small dessert. I think that's always a great quality in a restaurant in the service they provide. Its the people I appreciate, as well as wonderful food. I personally enjoyed both! I would definitely visit again."

  • "My wife and I went here for our 16th anniversary. Very nice, comfortable atmosphere. I decided to get a half order of the RIGATONI NORCINO prior to my main course. I'm glad I did... it was oustanding! For our main courses my wife had the POLLO FLORENTINE while I went with the POLLO AI FUNGHI E MARSALA. Both were very good (i tried hers too!). My complaints with the food were pretty minor. We both thought the dishes seemed a little salty. We don't use a lot of salt in our cooking at home so we're probably a little more sensitive to that than most. Oh, and I found out that I don't like polenta either (it was served as a side with my dish). The service was top notch. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "Always come to Louis prior to Ordway events for a fantastic Italian dinner.!"

  • "The service was excellent, and the ambience charming. I expected much more from the food and felt the food downstairs was far superior to the tasteless, salty, over-price dinner we had. I am so sorry that this was not better as I was anticipating so much more. I'd try again in hopes that this was an anomaly."

  • "This restaurant has a beautiful outdoor rooftop patio, but you can't order off the restaurant menu out there, only the bar menu. That's unfortunate. Had I known we couldn't eat outside, we would have made a reservation somewhere else. Our server was fantastic - very knowledgeable and energetic. The food portions are quite large, but the food itself is kind of blah. I'll go again to enjoy the bar, but I don't have any real urge to eat in the restaurant again."

  • "We took our son and his wife out for dinner to celebrate his birthday. We had a wonderful time! Brendan is a friend of the Louis Chef, and he was kind enough to send out some appetizers for our table. Our dinners came out promptly and we enjoyed the great food. All in all it was a lovely evening. If we had any complaints, it was a noisy crowd that night, but like us, everyone else was having fun, too."

  • "The food is excellent. The upstairs restaurant is lovely. Cosetta's, the dessert shop, and the Italian grocery store are amazing as well. My family loves the entire experience. We only wish the entire Louis menu could be served outside. We wanted to eat on the beautiful patio, but the outside menu is limited to mainly bar food. "

  • "Bruschetta featured mealy, gritty, bland tomatoes. Cesear salad was bland. Shrimp rubbery and soaking in oil. Long wait to have plares cleared. Definitely not fine dining. We will not return or reccomend anyone try Louis."

  • "Our meal was good but not great. Both the spaghetti and lasagna were very salty. I had fish which was good. Overall it was a good dining experience. Good service and ambience, but the food was not spectacular. I would likely try somewhere new before going back. "

  • "Food excellent, service good, noise level inside needs improvement. We prefer a quite dinner, unfortunately hard surfaces makes for very loud noise. I could not recommend to folks who want a quite romantic dinner. Roberto Silvagni"

  • "We sat outside on a recent Friday night. It took close to an hour to get a seat for 10 people outside (which is tough to do) so we went inside to the bar for beer/wine. The service was good and the non-full dinner menu outside was perfect for our group. Get there early and stay late."

  • "While the staff was friendly and the ambiance was great, the speed of service was horrendous! If your planning to go, make sure you get there LONG before your hungry. Our order for our party of 3 consisted of 3 drinks (took 15 minutes and only one was wine, the other two were Coke's), a caprese salad and 2 apps (another 20 minutes) and 3 entrees which were Chicken Parmigiana and 2 chicken under a bricks. It took almost an HOUR to get our entrees, and that was after we had finished our salad & apps! Between the salads and our entree's, our server was only seen once to bring us a refill and not even a mention as to why the wait was taking so long. Our server only stopped back two more times, to ask how the food was and to drop the check. "

  • "Next time we come will definitely just eat downstairs. It was very loud. Unable to get a spaghetti substitute for polenta with the chicken marsala without paying seven dollars. "
