A word from Louie's Oyster Bar
Reservations are only accepted for indoor tables. Outdoor tables are seated on a first come first serve basis.

One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck.
When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

  • "I booked our reservation 2 weeks in advance through open table and called the restaurant to request an outdoor table. I was told outdoor seating is not guaranteed and I understand that. We checked in on time and were told there was an hour wait for an outdoor table so we sat inside by the window overlooking the patio. From our table we could see at least 6 empty tables directly outside the window. I asked the hostess if there was any way we could move and was told that there was an "extensive list" of people who had been paged via cell phone that their tables were ready. The table for 4 directly outside remained available the entire time. It was a special occasion for us, but I did not enjoy the dinner I was so looking forward to."

  • "My folks were in from Texas so I took them to Louie ' for the view. We had a great time sitting on the patio. My dad and my husband both got combo plates and both said the fish was bland, but the scallops and stuff class were excellent."

  • "service was good. waiter was very attentive. food left a lot to be desired. we ordered the large cold and hot towers. baked clams were covered in bread crumbs, artichoke was canned, calamari was nothing to rave about, the marinara sauce that came long with it was good. the special peach feta salad, i did not try, but my friends said it was very tasty. the mozzarella heirloom salad was also very good. lobster tacos were ok, just some lobster meat (not fresh lobster) in a crunchy taco, lobster macaroni and cheese was watery, atlantic swordfish was swimming in oil, the halibut was floating in a broth as if it were a soup. just overall very disappointing especially since 6 of us spent $600. very pricey for quality of food."

  • "They don't tell you when you make a reservation that you can't reserve outdoor seating. We were told when we got there it would be an hour wait it was much longer than that with empty tables outside. Place is not well maintained and bar tenders were really rude."

  • "What better way to spend a sultry summer evening than by dining outside on Louie's patio. the food is always dependable...and the soft-shell crabs special was three large, plum lightly-battered crabs."

  • "Louie's is perfect for indoor but especially outdoor dining. You are right on the water and the food is spectacular. Our waiter was fun and attentive. I would recommend Louie's 100%."

  • "Food and service are always great and consistent. We have yet to have a bad experience. And the view is great."

  • "The food is prepared so nicely. All ingredients are fresh and perfectly seasoned. The bartenders know how to serve the perfect martini and the wine selection is impressive. The servers are friendly, professional and engaging. The only draw back seems to be the occasional fellow dinners who don't show respect for other people."

  • "lets start out by saying at least the manager took most of the food off the bill BUT the it was awful!ordered 5 spiced tuna w soba noodles. tuna came out with nothing on it- not even salted "inedible and overdone". My friend ordered salmon which was also bland and unremarkable. Kids dishes were..... ok.... just ok.... cheesecake was frozen in center and beyond bland.... better cheesecake from costco.... Maybe they are known for the shellfish but as a restaurant open for so long u should have nailed your menu...... They should get a new chef and/or recipes... Won't go back nor recommend to anyone. Came for the view and thats all it had....... better fish at a diner!"

  • "I've dined here several times, but I was not impressed with my entree this past visit. It was linguini with shrimp from the specials menu. It looked wonderful on then plate, but had little flavor, the linguini was overdone and mushy, and the shrimp was also overdone and rubbery."

  • "We were there on a Saturday night for a 7:45 reservation. We wanted to be outdoors, specifically asked for it when reservation was made, only to be told they don't guarantee outside seating. Inside was VERY loud, obnoxiously so! People were yelling in order to hear each other. It was ridiculous! We sat for quite a while before getting water or bread. The food was okay. My daughter ordered pan seared chicken, which came with mashed potatoes. I was suprised they didn't put a green vegetable on the plate. I've never been served with just potatoes. Not sure we will return."

  • "Went on Saturday night. Everything was bought to table wrong! Waiter never came back to check! Everything then was not only wrong but then freezing. Manager apologized, said dinner was on him and offered us coffee and dessert on him. No body ever came over to take our order for coffee and dessert! We got up, thanked the manager for his offer, explained that no one ever came over to take a dessert order. He said his name was John and if we came back to remind him dessert was on him! We left $20 on the table and left! We went to the ice cream parlor down the street! That was amazing..."

  • "For dining on the water this place is hard to beat. Had a great time and all was great. Expect a fair wait for an outdoor table if a busy night. Wide variety of menu and prices - and all was really excellent! First time customer, 90 minute drive from Westchester and highly recommended. We will return."

  • "This is a beautiful location and the food is often quite good. Unfortunately, the staff have continued to be poorer with every visit. This time the staff failed to even fill our water without multiple requests and seemed upset when we asked for something. The two waitresses were standing in a group 12 feet from our table gossiping but never noticed when a glass was empty without prompting and that includes when walking over to the table to ask how everything is (all glasses were empty at the time). There were other disappointments related to the service but it was all along the same lines. Very disappointed overall. I would not recommend this to a friend at this point and that is a loss."

  • "The spicy lobster tacos were one of the specials and they were so good! I can't stop thinking about them! All our food was great and we had an app, salad, main course and dessert! All of which were sooooooo good! It was a little pricey, but worth every penny! Not somewhere you would go for a quick lunch, much better enjoyed over a couple of hours! Can't wait to go again!"

  • "Made a reservation for a weeknight and asked for a table out on the deck. Was told a note was made that was my preference. When we arrived they said its a first come first serve for the outside deck and there would be a 30 minute wait. What's the point of reserving a table if you have to wait?"

  • "Been to Louie's many times. Can't be disappointed...or so I thought. we arrived at 4:30 for a 4:45 reservation and were seated promptly. It took the waitress or her assistant almost 20 minutes to come for a drink order. They knew we were there, bread, water, menus were placed. Will we go back? Yes. Will we seek out the servers. NO! More attention needs to be paid by desk and waiters and waitresses. 2 stars was generous. It was not that busy."

  • "After making a reservation nearly a week im advance via opentable, we were informed upon arrival that they never received the reservation. In addition to the poor service and lack of experience, the entire restaurant was overwhelmed in every area. I will never go back for dinner ever agaib."

  • "I thought it was great, there were just a few minor problems. I wanted to go for my one year anniversary, so I made a reservation online for a Saturday night at 7. In the "special instructions" box I asked for the table to be outside, as I wanted to have a nice view. I got there the next week at 6:55 to find all reservations are made inside, they do not take any outside reservations. That's fine, although I would've liked to be notified. I would've appreciated a message back letting me know they couldn't reserve my outside table. Because of this, I ended up waiting a little over an hour to get a seat. It was fine, we got drinks and an app at the bar. The food was good, and the water was beautiful. Very busy, but still nice. I would go back"

  • "And that just about says it all. There is nothing better in Port Washington, and isn't that a pity. The summertime views of the harbor at sunset are just breathtaking. And well worth your visit. Just don't expect the food to match. The oysters were so-so, the salad was good though oily, the chicken wings were awful - more of a bbq than buffalo flavor and oddly shaped: quail? rock cornish game hen? mutants? I would stick with ultra basics on the menu and keep your expectations low. Better yet, toast to the sunset and have dinner elsewhere."

  • "I go to Louie's often (about once a month) and like it very much. The food is very good (not great) and reasonably priced. There are not many restaurants in the area that offer good food and a great outdoor experience, and Louie's does. Service was good and accomodating."

  • "must have been an off day for the wait staff...horribly slow and food order was incorrect when received. overall no big deal eating here just came for the sun and the water view. whomever was sunning them selves and I think they worked there was an absolute turn off to my guest. he had his shirt open shoes off and just lounging looked gross doing it. luck we didn't gag on our food. no need to come back sorry.."

  • "Had a nice time at Louie's Oyster Bar & Grill. Food was good and so were the drinks. We did feel a little rushed because the waitress kept coming over to us to see if we had decided on our food. We ordered the crab cakes for appetizer and it came out within seconds. The inside restaurant was a bit noisy but we enjoyed our time there. Views were beautiful. Definitely recommend it."

  • "As soon as we sat down, someone came over to take our order for dinner. If you put your fork down for a second someone ran over to take your plate!! As soon as we finished dinner, someone came over to take dessert and coffee order. We had to tell them to back off and wait a few minutes. Not very pleasant experience. Felt very rushed and not able to enjoy our night out!! The food was fantastic though!!"

  • "Fresh, flavorful seafood prepared simply without overdoing the sauces, flavor additives; you can taste the wonderful fish/shellfish at its best. Lobster taco appetizer is fun and delicious!! As are the shrimp poorboy, lobster roll and FRESH corn on the cob (worthy side dish for the sandwiches)."

  • "Louie's oyster Bar was just what I expected. Good food and view. Calamari and steamers were excellent. In fact everything I ate at Louise's was delicious. We were four people and everyone loved their food. My Mojito was just right. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. I wish I could give rave report to Open Table but unfortunately I an not. I placed the reservation and received a confirmation number and time. The restaurant stated they did not have my reservation. Luckily the wait was only 30min., but could have been worse. I'm not certain whether I will use Open Table in the future or not."

  • "This was our second time at this restaurant and the food wasn't as good as the first time. Our dishes were just average nothing special. Perhaps it was the great view of the Sound that made our first experience so great. Will probably we awhile if at all before we return again"

  • " Kitchen was completely overwhelmed. We ended up leaving before the main course and the manager comped our appetizers. Unfortunately, he was also comping everyone around us as well. My recommendation is either go really early, only go for drinks for the view or don't go at all. Very disappointing. "

  • "Only got to the appetizer the service was so horrific we had to leave. Our server had no interest in serving which was the worst decision she could have made that day. We were there for a special event. Had spent 70 dollars just on the appetizer and having two people in my family in the restaurant business were prepared to eat and tip well. Had to ask for plates for appetizer drinks came slow. Our server dropped a fork in my son's beer it proceeded to bubble over no assistance in the spill had to ask for a new beer and she refused to remove the glass from the table she was to busy arguing with a co worker regarding a shift. Ruined the hole dinning experience ! Will not return"

  • "Soft shell crabs were gigantic and delicious. Could not finish them-there were three.Special salad was good too-with fresh mozzarella and sundered tomatoes. My husband had a broiled fisherman's platter. He too couldn't finish it. His New England clam chowder was great. We sat outside for an early dinner on a Friday night. It was a beautiful night. Bar was hopping. Geese and goslings were out too. Servers were friendly and prompt."

  • "My husband, another couple and myself had lunch here on Memorial Day. There were many choices on the lunch menu. Three of us had the lobster roll which was delicious and had plenty of lobster. The other diner had the swordfish which was a perfect lunch sized portion. The view was beautiful. The outdoor dining patio was covered by a canopy so that the sun was not beating down on us. The only negative, which I reduced the service by a star, was that even though we made a reservation in advance, we still had to wait about 45 minutes for an outdoor table."
