A word from Louie's Oyster Bar
Reservations are only accepted for indoor tables. Outdoor tables are seated on a first come first serve basis.

One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck.
When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

A great place to watch the Sunset over the bay on a warm summer night on the deck. Service staff were attentive. Food was just OK. My wife had fried Oysters that had pieces of oyster with lots of coating. Tasty, but very little oyster inside. I had broiled Cod. The fish was fresh and cooked just right, but it was over salted on top and took away from the excellence of the fish. I had asked for just plain broiled fish! We are not from the area, but had read good reviews. Not a place to go out of your way for the food. As an aside you can watch the Sunset from an adjacent Park on the Bay!

Service was very nice but SLOW...took a long time for our meal to be served. Waiter was lovely tho. Need better driving instructions as far as time on each road. I ordered mussels - very delicious! The seafood salad needed MUCH MORE FLAVORING... in fact we sent it back, (seafood tasted watered down) and ordered a crabcake sandwich which was very good!l Fruit platter was delicious. Serving personnel were all very kind and helpful. Setting beautiful !!!

I guess people come here because it's the only decent restaurant in the neighborhood with nice design? The food was fine not amazing. There was a strange smell inside, so we decided to sit outside. We waited probably 20 minutes before someone came to our table. We asked the busser for lemons. It never came. I think if the service was better, it would have made the experience more pleasant. NOTE TO OWNERS: your waiters need fine dine training ASAP. They did not refill water. Bread came only w/ butter, did not ask if we wanted olive oil. My brother's mac & cheese from the kids menu is NOT the traditional mac & cheese. It was shell pasta mixed w/ a little alfredo sauce and white cheese? Everyone needs to work a little harder. Too relaxed.

SOO loud, had to moved outside. A concearn since pending rain. We are not old crothety people, however, in the "room of echos", there were two very large tables of diners. They were having fun, yuking it up. HOWEVER... Waiter, Kevin, really nice, accomodating, and gracious. He set another table outside, which was quite nice. Dinner, not so great. Clams oreganata...eh! Baked clams...eh! Oysters, good. Asked for mignonette and was accommededed. Steamers, lousey, only because the butter was clarified. Never, never clarify the butter when serving steamers or lobster! Should always be DRAWN, frothy, and salty! Fried shrimp was well liked. Linguine with clam sauce...eh. Took home leftovers, thought I'd revamp and make worthy...ended up discarding.

As always the view is why Louies packs them in. The host staff always looks confused and incompetent, the wait staff is hit or miss...however the decent fresh shellfish and the view make up for the stressed out "get them in get them out" service.

Service was very poor. Took long time for food to arrive. Waiter had poor command of English language and as a result, one of the entree orders was wrong as was a drink order. Could not understand specials. More than once another server came over to bring us a dish which was not our table's. A restaurant which has been around as long as Louie's should have better service. Food was adequate, but nothing special. View was spectacular. If we were to return, it would be to bar for a drink and appetizer only.

You cannot beat the view at Louie's especially at sunset. However, they need to work on some of the wait staff that was slow and inattentive. The food was ok. There was nothing jumbo about the jumbo stuffed shrimp. It was also dry. The lobster mac n cheese needs to have a little more lobster otherwise it should be renamed to mac n cheese with lobster.

I brought my daughter there for a birthday lunch. Perfect weather, perfect outdoor dining. Had the lobster rolls which were tasty but, I think, just a bit overpriced at $22 and $23 for literally 1 scoop of lobster sitting on top of what was basically a hot dog bun. I wouldn't order that again. Everything else was wonderful.

Been coming here for years - and over time food has had its ups and downs. Pros: Takes reservations (for inside tables only) Many types of fish preparations, fish is very fresh. Beautiful view Good wine and beer list Cons: Food is overall - OK, but not great. Considering prices should be great. Dining room was almost empty when we arrived, and smelled like mildew/cleaning product. 2nd time this has occurred. When we arrived restaurant had lost our reservation - odd considering I had called about 30 minutes prior to say we'd be a little late. Dining rooms get VERY noisy. Parking lot hard to negotiate (up a very steep hill)

It face west at the sea which is perfect for sunset view. The reservation only guaranteed to have a indoor table. I waited for almost 45mins to get an outdoor table. It worthed to be waited. The view is really awesome. And the food is good too. For appetizer, I recommend the oyster, fried squid and mussel in white wine. The entree is not as good as appetizer. Anyway, it is best restaurant in that area.

The restaurant environment was quite noisy, but the view of water seemed to calm it down. The seafood was very good, and service was excellent. We requested an outdoor table and because it was a muggy day it was hot as the sun was hitting the deck-only improvement for restaurant would be to have outdoor fans.

We were seated immediately when we arrived at our reservation time and waited for the rest of our party. After 30 minutes of waiting for our friends, we got a call from them telling us that they were waiting for us for 20 minutes at another table in another room. We had checked in with the desk when we arrived and they sat us separately. The food was ok but the noise level was so high, we could hardly hear each other. We have been to Louie's several times but this time we were very disappointed. It will be a while until we go back.

Didn't have to wait for a patio table as it was 1:30pm -- I had the marinated seafood salad that came with a hefty amount of seafood and not overly soaked with dressing very tasty with the crusty bread . Mom has the grilled shrimp salad which had 12 grilled med size shrimp on it. The patio was busy but not noisy. The day we visited it was in the 80's so it was comfortable to sit out any warmer and we would have sat inside. Also -- no flying bugs....

Been before but may be last time. Waited hour twenty minutes for outside table. Was going to be hour for our reservation anyway. Enjoyed that time prob better than meal. Had few drinks out and enjoyed sunset and convo with wife, night away from kids. Waiter-very dry. Cold. Uninterested. Had seafood salad app. Lots of onion though not mentioned on menu. Each had lobster rolls which had a pathetic amount of meat Waiter didn't write down orders. AlwYs bad sign. We have paper and pens for a reason. He of course forgot her side dish order. Never got it. Too many other places to eat by water on LI. Not worth it here.

I booked our reservation 2 weeks in advance through open table and called the restaurant to request an outdoor table. I was told outdoor seating is not guaranteed and I understand that. We checked in on time and were told there was an hour wait for an outdoor table so we sat inside by the window overlooking the patio. From our table we could see at least 6 empty tables directly outside the window. I asked the hostess if there was any way we could move and was told that there was an "extensive list" of people who had been paged via cell phone that their tables were ready. The table for 4 directly outside remained available the entire time. It was a special occasion for us, but I did not enjoy the dinner I was so looking forward to.

service was good. waiter was very attentive. food left a lot to be desired. we ordered the large cold and hot towers. baked clams were covered in bread crumbs, artichoke was canned, calamari was nothing to rave about, the marinara sauce that came long with it was good. the special peach feta salad, i did not try, but my friends said it was very tasty. the mozzarella heirloom salad was also very good. lobster tacos were ok, just some lobster meat (not fresh lobster) in a crunchy taco, lobster macaroni and cheese was watery, atlantic swordfish was swimming in oil, the halibut was floating in a broth as if it were a soup. just overall very disappointing especially since 6 of us spent $600. very pricey for quality of food.
