  • "Excellent Italian restaurant with very helpful wait staff."

  • "It's a really cute Italian restaurant. The lasagna was my favorite - so yummy and the perfect portion size! We arrived early and had 2 additional diners with us and they immediately accommodated us.Excellent service."

  • "I selected this restaurant because of location. I was having dinner with my son and he lives up the street. Being from the East Coast where we have wonderful Italian food, I believe I'm a bit spoiled and picky when it comes to Italian food. It was just okay. I had the capres salad as an appetizer which actually was very good. For dinner I had cannelloni stuffed with spinach and cheese. I thought the pasta sheets are too thick and the spinach tasted like creamed spinach. It was supposed to have a creamy tomato sauce over-the-top. Very little sauce on it and to me to seemed a little bit on the dry side. We did not have any dessert so I cannot comment on the desserts. It was just okay not a place that I would go back to"

  • "My husband and I were looking for a quiet dinner and excellent food. Definitely some of the best Italian we've ever had! Our waitress was attentive and knowledgable and wine she paired for us was excellent. We will definitely return."

  • "Three of us dined here. We had reservations, and were given what appeared to be a terrific table in a quiet part of the restaurant. Unfortunately, a group of 6 came in soon after us, and were placed across from us. The acoustics in the place are not great, and we could barely have a conversation because the group was so loud. That said, the food was excellent. I had the red snapper, and the fish was fresh, the preparation terrific. While I would not necessarily travel across the city to come here, the location near Union Square is good, and the food is good. Maybe go on a night when there might be fewer parties."

  • "I was in town for a conference and didn't know where to dine. I found this restaurant on a list of places close to the hotel and decided to try it. We had a late dinner and had the place practically to ourselves. The waitress was incredible...friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating to requests for off menu items. The food was simply amazing. I wish this restaurant was in my home town, I'd be a regular there for sure!!"

  • "this was a nice, quiet restaurant. the mango salad was excellent. the fish of the day was very boring and mediocre."

  • "We stayed at the Ritz Carlton and asked the concierge for a recommendation. I had passed this restaurant walking a few blocks away. He was not aware of it and sent us somewhere else. His recommended spot was ordinary at best. The next night we went here and could not have been more pleased. This is the type restaurant a hotel like the Ritz Carlton should refer their guests to."

  • "My sister and I had dinner here on our last night in the City. It was exactly what we needed - nice trattoria style ambiance, great food, good service and a moderately quiet place to still be able to visit."

  • "Restaurant was recommended by our hotel - Wyndham Canterbury. Great food and service. Loved the spinach salad and the pasta is definitely homemade. Will definitely eat there again next time we're in town."

  • "I was tempted to shove some sugar packs under the table leg to stop the wobbling, but I just dealt with it. A small place and I really like that. Low light and candles are a nice mood-set. Waitresses were quick and responsive, meals were served hot and promptly. The prices were right for SF and the quality of food did NOT disappoint. Definately look forward to returning soon."

  • "The restaurant is small with a traditional Italian decor. It's cozy and charming. Service was pleasant and competent. The restaurant filled up and was lively, but quiet enough to chat. We had an eggplant appetizer which was tasty and light with an excellent light tomato sauce. We shared a spinach salad, also elegant and tasty. We shared a stuffed chicken breast. The meat was a little on the dry side, but the overall flavor profile was good. It was served with penne and a delicious rich white sauce. Pasta dishes we observed on other tables looked really good. We felt comfortable and welcome. It's a good choice if you have tickets for ACT, 2 blocks away."

  • "We visited San Francisco, staying in Union Square and consulted Open Table for Italian Restaurants. Decided on this one based on menu and reviews and it did not disappoint. Service was great, food was classic Italian. Would definitely return again."

  • "A real find, a neighborhood restaurant well patronized. Despite it being full, we were promptly seated at the OT reservation time. Excellent food & wine."

  • "We enjoyed it both times. We brought couples who had not been there before and they were pleased, also. We'll definitely keep coming as the food is good, the prices reasonable and the service warm and friendly."

  • "It was okay. The food was good, but the food took a long time (it was a large group) and the food wasn't as hot as it should have been. They were fast to seat us after we reserved on Open Table."

  • "We were attending Dreamforce 2013 and were looking for a good Italian meal, and found it in this old neighborhood restaurant. The place was almost empty, but we never felt alone. Food was great, atmosphere was conducive to conversation, staff was attentive, but not overly so. Not sure how much buzz would be in the air with a full house, but it was clear that this restaurant staff had years of experience. I'd love to give it another go next time I'm in San Francisco."

  • "Amazing food, amazing place. This is the first place I come to when I visit SF. Lasagna was to die for!"

  • "L'Ottavo is a small italian restaurant about 2 blocks off Union Square in San Francisco. The Beef and Salmon Carpaccio were very good. The Antipasto was so so, because they substitute thing like the dry tomatos for fresh tomato slices. The main dishes such as the lobster Ravioli, the Lasagna, the New York steak were great. The wine list was small but had some good choices."

  • "Nice little neighborhood restaurant. Service was quick.........nice wine list. Food very good. Definitely would go back when in SF."

  • "Very light for Italian. Full of flavor and the dishes were not overpowered by sauces, like many other Italian restaurants. Small place. I recommend for small parties who want to enjoy a simple site but still elegant."

  • "Good unpretentious Italian food at a reasonable price close to Union Square. A little noisy but the service was prompt and courteous despite being short of wait staff."

  • "I'd recommend this spot for casual dinner in the Union Square/TenderNob area. It can get busy, so definitely make a reservation ahead of time. Could be considered on the romantic side, but probably not the best place for a first date. Pretty good wine list, large dinner portions, and all of the pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly."

  • "Good small neighborhood style restaurant. Service was OK. Food was OK. Place was small with only a few tables. Menu was OK. Nothing unique or different."

  • "Quieter than most San Francisco's restaurant. The house carafe is a great selection and great value at $25 for 4 people. The entree selections have a great presentation and the serving size is not oversized like similar sfo restaurants - What a secret gem."

  • "We went to Marines Memorial Theatre on a Saturday and dined afterwards. We were 1/2 hour early and they were able to accommodate us. Family of four - I think everyone enjoyed their food. Two lasagnas, a ravioli, and a seafood pasta. All was good, but the seafood pasta - no flavor, seemed less than fresh. A salad and soup and bruschetta were ordered and all three were good. We had some wines by the glass and that was good. Bill was ~$180.00"

  • "L'Ottavo is an adequate restaurant if you are in the neighborhood. We used to go there several years ago and I suspect that there has been an ownership change since then. Service was attentive and the food was satisfactory but nothing remarkable. The selection of Italian wines by the glass was good."

  • "Have eaten at L'Ottavo several times, and they never disappoint! The food is always great Italian food, with large portions. They have some of the best soups around, so I always start with the soup of the day (particularly if it is a lobster or crab bisque). I've tried several different pasta dishes, so would recommend the Fettucini L'Ottavo (Bacon, mushrooms & peas in a light creamy tomato sauce, although I leave off the mushrooms) or one of the Ravioli's or the Linguini Carbonara. This last time I had a grilled chicken breast that was delicious! My bother has had great success with the veal (not my favorite type of meat usually), while my mother and another friend of ours usually stick with the pastas. And leave room for dessert!"

  • "We were happy to have had a reservation as there is a small number of tables. The food was outstanding. We had the bruschetta to start with some Chianti. I had the house made pasta, another in our party had a lasagna which looked delicious. What a great little neighborhood restaurant!"
