A word from L'Olivier
The main dining room, decorated with French antiques, exudes quiet, inviting grace and opens onto a large greenhouse filled with plants and fresh flowers. This airy room's elegantly casual ambience is the perfect complement to the more formal dining room.

The private dining rooms offer banquet facilities for business groups with free wi-fi, as well as social events such as weddings, birthdays, and rehersal dinners. The kitchen offers a menu borrowed from French country style recipes that are classical yet light in calories. Suberbly rich desserts include a delectable soufflé and signature crème brulée.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food took us back to 30 years ago when three course French dinners were eaten without guilt. The trio of salmon appetizer was outstanding as was a superb beet salad. All of our entrees were amazing including the cassoulet which was on the very reasonably priced prix fixe menu. Don't miss the light, fluffy soufflé."

  • "Decore is circa 1990s hotel lobby cafe. The food wasn't but unmemorable and slightly salty. The wine list is very limited. The prices are fair and the waiter was nice. The desserts were the best part of the meal. "

  • "We had a lovely dinner with Classic French food and service. Fresh flowers on the table, rare lamb, scallops that still glisten, demi-glace sauce perfectly rendered..... Quiet, helpful service."

  • "We find that for a really nice meal in a lovely setting with ambiance you can enjoy for conversation around a round table with friends and plenty of nice service so you can relax, L'olivier is ever pleasing! We go and take friends for birthdays, special nights out, before the 42nd Street Moon musicals nearby at the Eureka Theater, and to just have a lovely french supper of fish or lamb that is delicious and beautifully presented."

  • "I hadn't tried this restaurant before and was pleased with the overall experience. It's a short walk from the FiDi, is quiet, has good, basic food and good service at reasonable prices. I liked the fact that the large group was seated in a separate room and I could actually talk with my dinner companion in a normal tone of voice -- that's so hard to find these days! I had an excellent salad w/ tasty dressing and my companion enjoyed her onion soup. We both had sole, which was pan seared, nicely cooked with a very simple lemon sauce."

  • "This is an old traditional french restaurant and the food is really really good, especially the grand marnier souffles. The prices are moderate and the wine list is good. However it is showing its age, there was hardly anyone there on a Friday night and it needs some sprucing up and better pr."

  • "We always enjoy this restaurant --nice facility - very good staff - the food is delicious/well prepared - and the price is right. Parking could be an issue as it is street metered only. There are some facilities in the area but not well signed nor easy to locate. However to be sure this restaurant is high on our must visit list.."

  • "I had never been to L'Olivier before, but the special Valentine's Day prix-fixe menu looked interesting (and much more affordable than others in the area). We were very happy with the result. The food is quite good, and we were especially impressed by the lamb ribs: a perfect carbon crust while remaining rare in the middle, with a delicious fig sauce and roasted vegetables on the side. We were less impressed with the creme brûlée, which was oddly shallow and a bit under-torched, but given the mass-production nature of a prix-fixe event we gave them a pass. All in all we were impressed (and very well-fed). I'm sure we'll be back to sample the normal menu."

  • "We went for a team lunch. The food was good as was the atmosphere. It was VERY slow service in a mostly empty late lunch restaurant. Go if you have plenty of time and enjoy a nice leisurely lunch that has a good prie fix menu."

  • "New décor helps but apparently not too many people know that as lunch was sparsley attended...though private room has large party I had salmon and my guest had duck--both were excellent and I thought the salmon salad was particularly well prepared. Service friendly and efficient...Maria was a great waiter Wine selections limited. Atmosphere is great (though somewhat lonely) as it is one of the few places that allows conversations without raising your voice--a definite plus! PS FYI- Tried to respond to request for review of Armenea that evening but had to cancel and your form does not allow that feedback"

  • "We were a group of seven men and women who hadn't seen each other in a long time. Asked for the small room off the lobby and it was waiting for us. A perfect setting. We were able to carry on normal-decibel conversations. Food was, as always, wonderful. Lamb dishes were standouts. Creme brulee and souffle were just as great as we remembered."

  • "There were four of us, old time friends living far apart.a reunion of sorts. The food and ambience were great but what we especially appreciated was the fact that it was quiet and you could hear yourself talk(unlike a recent experience at a large busy restaurant) We recommend without hesitation."

  • "This felt like a Fellini film experience. Though the name may be French this place, all the waiters and diners were Russian. There are several large, brightly lit (hurts the eyes) rooms. The room the two of us were seated in was empty and cavernous. The only other guests seated during our "dining experience" were two parties in wheel chairs. The other rooms held a few large parties of Russians. The wine and food were edible, fairly tasteless and expensive. Do yourself a favor and don't go there. We would have left but had theater tickets and didn't have time to find anything else. Big mistake."

  • "The most disappointing aspect of our Christmas Dinner was the lack of The prize Fixed menu entrée. At the last minute they substituted something not even on the menu. Left overs at l'Oliver's will be a family joke for years to come."

  • "1. Service was cheerful, but slow. Perhaps understandable on a busy night, but one would expect management to have anticipated that. Additionally, the waiter had to be reminded twice that cutlery was missing. 2. The pumpkin bisque soup was delicious, but not served hot enough. 3. Our reservation was for 7:45 p.m., and the restaurant had already run out of the filet mignon tournedos. Sigh. Again, an indication that management had underestimated how busy they would be that day. Our guests were happy with their lamb shanks, but the sea bass was barely warm when served, and somewhat tasteless. Sigh. Desserts were good. Overall, only a "good" rating."

  • "This was our first time here and the special menu was served that night for Holiday dinner. We started with a very creamy pumpkin bisque that was very Tasty. Then salmon with caviar which was perfect over the crisp toasts that came with it. I had the Turkey with stuffing and a chestnut gravy. That was delicious. There was also a chestnut mousse That I was not too fond of but can't like everything. Dessert was a chocolate surprise cake . That was Fantastic !"

  • "We had reservations at L'Olivier on Christmas evening. We arrived a little early but our table was available and we enjoyed the special four-course dinner that evening. The restaurant was full, pacing of the dinner was very good as was the service that we had that night. This is a favorite restaurant of ours - a little tucked away but popular with locals. Will definitely be going back again."

  • "The setting is the perfect place for a Holiday feast, Quite charming. The food was excellent from soup to dessert. The service was a little shakey, the waiter was a new comer to this country, and while he was quite charming, he had not been property trained as to placement of plates (ladies first, etc.) He was eager to place, but was not knowledgabel about the drink menu, then brought the wrong drink, and he did not have knowledge of the wine list. All in all it was a pleasant dinner with wonderful food. I would ask the restaurant to work with the waiter on protocol. He was eager and will be a wonderful wait person one day.' Definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Finding a high quality yet reasonably priced venue for a Christmas dinner with family members was not easy, but L'Olivier came through for us. The staff were very friendly, the decor was festive yet elegant, the food was very good, the menu was fixed but still varied enough to suit most diners, and the price was reasonable. Tres Bien! We'll come again."

  • "The atmosphere for the holidays is especially warm, tasteful and inviting - the perfect place to enjoy excellent food and service. The food is consistently excellent and the menu items are very reasonably priced. The fixed price lunch and dinner menus are a great - the quality and presentation of the food is great for a food lover. I've been coming to L'Olivier for over 20 years and have never been disappointed for a wonderful dining experience, especially for special occasions."

  • "The service to the very end was good. A little more care should be given as to who gets what item rather than having to ask us. And as it happens in many restaurants, there was a wait for the bill after it was obvious that we were all finished."

  • "We decided to have a break from the usual Thanksgiving tradition and arranged a late afternoon meal with our son & his family. L'Olivier was the perfect place for our small group. We had a delightful meal, our choice of dishes - all of which were delicious. THe staff were all kind and treated our grandson very well. Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon."

  • "Three of us went for 4-course Thanksgiving dinner. It was wonderful. L'Olivier is a charming French restaurant in the Financial District near Embarcadero Ctr--in existence for 35 yrs. Consistently excellent French cuisine and warm, attentive service. Good for business lunches also since tables are not so close together that you hear every word next to you."

  • "The main dining room & their front atrium rooms are excellent but they had a private party so they sat us in a brightly brightly lit room which took away all the charm of the restaurant. Felt like I was in a conference room with no ambience. I would not have eaten there had I known . This restaurant does a lot of pvt parties they should let the patron know ahead of time."

  • "I often go to L'Olivier with friends before a show. The meals are reasonably priced. The menu is uninspired but the food is good. Unfortunately the service is poor. We always tell the waiters -- I've never seen a waitress -- the curtain time and are assured there won't be a problem, the meal always ends up rushed. The food is slow in coming out of the kitchen and the waiters either disappear or to ignore attempts to get their attention. This is odd b/c I imagine it's popular pre-theatre dining b/c of its location. Several years ago, I took over the restaurant for an event and was very pleased. The food was excellent; the atmosphere perfect and the staff was accommodating and very easy to work with."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant in all of San Francisco. I have been here for work-related events in the private dining room, and for dinner with our adult children and on many occasions for just the two of us. Food is always amazing (especially the Filo dough/brie starter) and the quiet atmosphere allows conversation. This an adult oasis of elegance in SF and moderately priced so you can relax and enjoy. Perfect."

  • "The food was good and although we allowed enough time for a longer lunch, we didn't expect to spend so much time waiting to order, waiting for the food, waving down the waiter, etc. when the restaurant was not very crowded. Might be a better choice for dinner when there are no time constraints, but when on a limited time frame, this would not be an optimal choice when there are so many other options."

  • "Fresh and well prepared and well served. Three different generations at the table enjoyed the food. All dishes were enjoyed from the piquant roasted red bell pepper soup to a wonderful entrée of seafood risotto to desserts that were not only beautiful but, delicious. From a crème brulee to a Valhona chocolate mousse cake with white chocolate and dots of raspberry sauce. One of the most delicious and simple apple tarts. The service was outstanding. Even if you haven't been in awhile - go back! They also have a full bar and I didn't partake but, noted all the drinks as they passed by to other tables."
