Diner Reviews
  • "Decided to try this with a group of friends. We had a great time. The hostess was friendly, the server was friendly and the food was outstanding. Definitely recommend the floating island dessert. We will definitely be back for more."

  • "My salmon carpaccio was dry and stuck to the plate, suggesting it had been cut too far in advance and left in the fridge. My wife's onion soup was good. Our rack of lamb for two was cooked properly, but was served whole, neither divided into individual chops nor even split into two servings. Absolutely bizarre. We will probably give L'Oliver one more chance, though."

  • "L'Olivier has been heavily hyped in press reviews since opening, however one year on, the service does not match its aspirations. Table service was indifferent and very slow (for all diners) on only a moderately busy weekend night. Food was good, but not outstanding. Dessert was nothing special. Wine list too short for a top class establishment."

  • "This is the second time we have had dinner here and we have been very happy with both visits. The wait staff are very attentive and service oriented, the food is great (everything we have ordered has been outstanding), and the wine list is comprehensive without being ridiculous."

  • "We have ate here many times. The best French cuisine in the city. We eat at Cafe Rabalais and Max and Julie's , both really good places, but this is best. The food here is better, the attention to detail, and they take reservations. The chef and the attention to detail are both great."

  • "After sampling a number of other French restaurants in Houston, including an old time favorite Brasserie Max & Julie, the bar was set quick high. However I am glad to report that L'Olivier did not disappoint. There was a friendly welcome at the door and we were shown promptly to out table, in the chic but comfortable dining area. Previous reviews remarked on the somewhat snooty service. I prefer to describe this as somewhat theatrical. Either the service was knowledge about the food and wine menus and very attentive. Food and wine were simply outstanding. I cannot wait to dine here again"

  • "Houston has many great restaurants, and L'Olivier's in one of them. We've eaten there several times and keep bringing our friends there because it is such a gem. The service is very good, the wine list is comprehensive, but the food...what can I say? It is outstanding. Wonderful flavored, beautiful presentation, and when L'Olivier comes to the table when the main course is presented to explain the ingredients and preparation...it very classy. Don't skip the Floating Island for dessert! It's like eating a piece of heaven."

  • "Food was very good but service was very snobby. I suggest that they visit Flemings or Eddie V's to see what a real service should be."

  • "Love French food and this came recommended from a colleague, a modern restaurant with good food and attentive staff The Chef visiting the table to ask if we enjoyed our food is a nice personal touch missing from many Houston establishments. Overall a very pleasant evening and an experience to be repeated."

  • "The service was impeccable as we dined on a special fish out of Greece. It was prepared with a lovely wine sauce and served with brussel sprouts and green beans. The food was perfectly prepared and plated beautifully. It was a semi-business luncheon meal. The servers did not rush and seemed to know it was business so kept their space, but they were there at a moment's notice when we were ready to order and asked for a check. The chef and owner came out at the end of the meal to thank us for coming and to ask about our meal. A nice touch! I really like this little restaurant and would recommend it."

  • "L'Olivier has a great wine list and excellent food. I like dining at the bar. Entertaining bartenders and I really like the raw bar. Great spot."

  • "As usual, L'Olivier is a hit. I will continue to go here for any special occasion as the food is incredibly delicious and very well presented. However, I do not think I will be doing another one of the "set menu" dinners. I was disappointed in the items for this particular serving. Both the Lamb chops and the Veal chops we tried were over cooked. The desert brownie felt like it had been left sitting in the oven for way too long, making it hard. It made me picture a factory assembly line putting out dishes, not the high end kitchen you would expect. This is not the usual quality I've come to expect from this place. I would normally give them a 5 star rating across the board, but the Valentine's set menu..not so great."

  • "The butternut squash pasta was one of the best things I have eaten in a long time - fantastic. Sea bass was very good also. Wine pairings were well matched and pleasing. Very nice meal overall, everyone left happy!"

  • "This was my first try at true French Cuisine. Although it was early in the evening, I was shocked not to see more help at the valet. It took us an extra 10-15 minutes to get into the restaurant. We ended up dining in the bar area which kept us from getting the full effect, but we were very well taken care of. Our glasses stayed full and we never wanted for anything. All 4 of each of our courses were prepared spectacularly, the only drawback being that I might not be accustomed to the taste of chicken liver pate. I am very excited about giving the regular dining menu a shot next time as we were there for a prix fixe Valentine's Day Dinner."

  • "My girlfriend and I went there for Valentine's Day. We had a 4-course Valentine Day's Menu. For the first course, she had the crab cakes and I had the smoked salmon. Both dishes were really good. For the second course, we both enjoyed the butternut squash pasta; it was exquisitely delicious. For the main course, she had the petit filet of beef, which was cooked exactly as she ordered it. I, on the other hand, had the lamb chops, which were overcooked. For dessert, we had chocolote mousse. It had the right amount of sweetness and wasn't too dense. Overall, we both enjoyed our experience there and would be happy to go back."

  • "Very good French brasserie with good wine list. Not the best in town but solid quality. Service very slow on a Saturday night not full--but very polite."

  • "Pleasant French fare, attentive service. Wine prices high, but seems to be quiet common these days in Houston restaurants..."

  • "I honestly haven't had such a bad meal in years. Most plates were below par, but my veal was terrible... And as a final touch, the check was substantially bigger than most good restaurants in Houston."

  • "We had a large party with reservation on Saturday and even though the food was great the servers were very rude. At the price point of the food, we expect good service at a minimum."

  • "My wife and I went for dinner on St Valentin's and we came out with mixed feelings about L'Olivier. L'Olivier has the makings of a very good restaurant which let us down on that particular evening. The reason being is that my wife's sirloin was not properly cooked so we have to return it and when it came back it was very well done rather than medium. Also, the service was not very friendly and got annoyed when we returned the sirloin. I think all the issues we had are due to the restaurant trying to get a lot of table rotation that night which led to a decrease in the quality of the food and service. Should we give L'Olivier another chance? Still debating it...."

  • "This place had a very nice Valentine's Prix Fixe menu as every course was the perfect size as to allow enjoyment of all 4-courses. The booth-backs and walls had a great pattern which was very French and the drink menu, wine list and valet were on par for fine dining. The only complaint I had at all is not really a complaint, but more of a curiosity...why are all of the new high-end restaurants in Houston going away from the traditional white tablecloths and solid wood tables to aged metal tables with nails to keep in-place and no tablecloth at all? I think that decor, ceilings, floors and bars can be played around with a bit to achieve a unique feel, but the tables, chairs and uniforms should always be top-notch."

  • "We dinned on V-day which happens to be our 10 yr anniversary. It was busy and we were dining late. I'm sure the servers were exhausted after a busy night but we were very disappointed in the level of attention we recieved. I have been in the restaurant business so I know the pressure you are under in those moments but I felt like we were an inconvience to the server. The food... They advertise as a French restaurant but the pri-fix menu was less than exciting and it felt as if everything was pre-made in the kitchen just waiting to be pulled out if the oven. The food lacked flavor and I noticed little to no French influence. The ingredients did not seem fresh especially the crab salad. Overall, I was very disappointed. We will not return."

  • "We had great service here! Our server had been there for 2 years, very generous with reccommendations. The only reason I gave the food a 4 and not a 5 was for 1 dish, the seabass was made with truffle oil, but too much. Seabass already has a butter taste, so this made it seem like I was eating butter out of the container. Everything else was tasty!!! Liver, veal, lobster bisque!! I reccommend this place!"

  • "My wife and I dined here on Saturday night at 8:30. There were only about 4 other tables occupied. We started with the escargots and salmon. The escargots were delicious - truly a stand out. The salmon was very good as we,, - light, tender, but a bit salty. We then split the steak frittes for our main course. The portion was perfect for two. The meat was delicious and prepared perfectly. We enjoyed our meal with a delicious Margaux and some "shredded" brussel sprouts with garlic (which had LOTS of garlic - maybe a tad too much). After dinner, we ordered a cheese plate for dessert. We got the Humboldt Fog - good. After our meal, the chef came out to say hello to the two remaining tables. He was very nice and personable."

  • "Visiting Houston, I found l'Olivier to be a darling restaurant where the décor is hip and tasteful, everyone greets you with a smile, and the food is delicious. They were even able to accommodate my dairy free, gluten free restrictions. This one is a keeper."

  • "Came in on a Friday night without reservations at prime time and was quickly seated. Menu and food was excellent. Reasonably priced, unique with great tasting food."

  • "The food was delicious and well cooked, though the salmon could have used some seasoning. Portions were just right. Wine selection was excellent. I like the decor, it is attractive but somewhat sparse. The noise level was fine but we were there early. Not sure how it will hold up if the dining room was full. Our waiter was very attentive without being burdensome."

  • "Great Dining experience. Food was over the top. Not crowded when we dined so it was very quiet."

  • "Food was overall very good! But the service was unacceptable. They tried to tell us they were wanting to let us enjoy our conversation, but in reality, the service was just poor. As an example, it took over 15 minutes to deliver an after dinner capichino, and arrive Luke warm at best. Food was delicious but below ideal serving temperature (and one of entrees was extremely under cooked from the requested medium,(I would have love my King Salmon served that way, but that is not how it was requested."

  • "NYE dinner with four courses and a great list of craft cocktails and wine. Outstanding dishes we enjoyed were: pate, pumpkin ravioli, sea bass, lamb chops and the Nutella brownie. This is my fourth time here and L'Olivier always delivers!!!"

  • "I have been here twice and they were both good. We had oysters and liver pate as starters. Then my friend had the duck confit while I have the bougonbaise. Our food were great, they made sure it was made to our liking. Our server was funny and helpful while being quite attentive. The chef came by our table to greet and made sure we had a good experience. I love the simple food and did not feel like I ate a stick of butter like most restaurant that claimed to be French."

  • "We are regulars that live in the neighborhood. Our daughter Amanda was in from Corpus and had never been with us to eat. She was wowed! From the welcoming from Mary and Chef Olivier and 5-star service to the perfection of every dish...the night was incredible! We all had fish and each one was cooked to perfection along with the sides of Brussel sprouts, creamed potatoes and bacon tart! Treat yourself...you won't be sorry!!!"

  • "The black truffle tagliatelle was delightful; but then the baramundi was just okay. It tasted a bit fishy, without much flavor. The five course tasting meal had similar bright spots but was brought down by some underperforming courses - the salmon starter could have been beat by the lox at Einstein's; pea ravioli was very good, lamb chops were like the ones I make myself at home (in other words, good, but not something I want to pay someone else for), swordfish was well seasoned and great consistency, and dessert was strange - good brownie, but thrown off by bubble gum ice cream. Overall, don't regret trying something new by going there, but wasn't impressed enough to want to return given the number of other stand outs in Houston."
