A word from Lolita Restaurant
Lolita is a Modern Mexican Restaurant located in Philadelphia in Midtown Village. Originally opened in 2004 by restaurateurs Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, it underwent a major renovation in 2014 and reopened with a fresh look, a new Mexican street food-inspired menu and a full liquor license.

The extensive full-scale renovation highlights the addition of a 16-seat bar and chef's counter looking into the open kitchen. Lolita seats 45 guests with additional outdoor sidewalk seating in the warmer months. Reservations are accepted every day for lunch and dinner, while seating at the bar and chef’s counter is on a first come, first served basis. We have a full liquor license and accept all major credit cards.

Diner Reviews
  • "Made a reservation for a Sunday evening. We were able to snag a table outside to enjoy the beautiful evening. We arrived right on time but the other couple we were meeting were running behind. We were seated right away and proceeded to order a cocktail and enjoy the night. Our waiter was great and accepting of our tardy other two members of the party and let my boyfriend and I enjoy our cocktail. Finally the other group arrived and we got to ordering the Guac was good, but small. Chips were on point. We ordered the chicharones that were AMAZING. Great squash blossom special followed by tacos for everyone. The Tacos were okay - very small and lacked a strong flavor profile. Cocktails and apps were amazing - we will definitely be back!"

  • "We used to eat at this place all the time before it changed the menu. Not worth my time or money now. What a shame, this was one of our favorite resturants. Now we are done eating there."

  • "new Lolita has a wonderful menu and now my favorite Mexican place. I especially enjoyed their seafood tostada and fish tacos."

  • "This was my first visit to Lolita since it re-opened and was no longer a BYOB. I am sad to say that I miss the old Lolita. The food was still good, however since they added a bar and pricey cocktails, the menu is now more casual Mexican focused (tacos, nachos, tostatas) instead of their old menu that was more large plates and unique entrees. We went for a special occasion and I was disappointed that our entire meal was finished in under an hour, which made it feel more like casual dining than the quaint Mexican spot it used to be. While I'm happy the restaurant has remained in the neighborhood (and now takes reservations!) I doubt we'll return to Lolita as it has very little distinction from El Vez or the Pistola restaurants now."

  • "Went to Lolita for the first time since its reboot last week and the food was all incredible (as I've come to expect from their restaurants), but the service left a little something to be desired. Our waiter barely checked on us and at one point, we were ready to order new drinks and he was nowhere to be found - we received our second wave of small plates and had eaten almost everything by the time he even came to take our next drink order, then the drinks took forever to come out and mine wasn't even correct. It really put the entire experience out of sync and put a damper on what was really an excellent meal. Once the cocktails actually came out they were delicious, I just wish the waiter had been more attentive."

  • "I frequent center city restaurants quite often, and the noise level in this restaurant was just off the charts. We ended up leaving early. Noisier than Barbuzzo or El Vez to name two close restaurants that also can be noisy. Otherwise, nice place with some good alternatives food wise to El Vez. No authentic but good nonetheless."

  • "We had a reservation at 5PM, but showed up about 10 minutes earlier. When we tried to see if we can be seated as it was raining outside, the hostess gently but firmly told us: no, they open only after 5PM. So that shows her discipline, I guess. We picked the tasting menu from their advertisement, $45 for 3 courses plus a tequila. The food was all freshly prepared and tasty, as typified by good Spanish food. The ambiance is intentionally unrefined, with exposed brick walls so that the noise level shot up quickly, once the customers started to fill the restaurant. For the cost, this is a worthwhile dining experience."

  • "Great choice for a date night. Excellent service and food was good. The ceviche starter was delicious. Margaritas were weak and I could hardly taste the tequila -- not sure I would order a pitcher again, expected a bit more for $35+."

  • "The Late Night specials at Lolita are totally worth it. The tacos are a great price but not the size of, say, most Philadelphia taco truck tacos. They are the slightly smaller tortilla size. The sheet pan vegetarian nachos were SO FLAVORFUL if you like mushrooms. We also tried the short rib and much preferred the veggies. The house margarita was delicious - I chose no sugar or salt on the rim. I might get salt next time."

  • "We recently tried Lolita, after having eaten at Jamonera and Barbuzzo. We enjoyed the seafood prix fixe dinner tremendously! Literally every dish was delicious and the cucumber melon margarita was a great partner. Staff was friendly and it was an A+ time!"

  • "As a person who really isn't fond of Mexican food, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, how potent (and flavorful) the 'house' Margarita was. Although we chose to sit inside, we had a table that looked out onto 13th Street, allowing us to "people watch", on a very pleasant Sunday evening. While the service was good, it wasn't exceptional. I especially liked the fact that water was always on the table, to cool down the Mexican spices. I would recommend Lolita to anyone who limes Mexican food in a casual atmosphere."

  • "---it was a great dinner after theater meal..the pork belly tacos and chicharon was oustandingg..the short rib with fried egg was good but a little salty...the salmon appetitzer was OK...this shrimp with head on al a plancha was disappointing..overcooked/dry ..you can tell by the head it was not the fresh...it was OK"

  • "I haven't been here since they completely redid the menu at Lolita. It's now no longer BYO which is disappointing. However, the food and drinks are still very good. The menu now is inspired by Mexican street food--tacos, street-style corn, etc., and the emphasis is on tapas. Service was okay. The hostess sat us in the corner seat by the front window and after being served our food, the server completely forgot about us. We had to hunt her down to ask for the desert menu."

  • "food was good but not great. chips were a bit soft, perhaps from sitting outside for a while. Salsa (which i use as the acid test for any mexican restaurant) was not noteworthy. Pricey restaurant--had to pay extra for chips/salsa and rice/beans."

  • "I have been a fan of Lolita since it first opened, and was BYOT (Bring Your Own Tequila), cash only. Personally I am not bowled over by the change to full bar and small plate "Mexican street food." The restaurant is still very good, however, and certainly one of the best Mexican restaurants in Philly."

  • "When we arrived, the hostess had no record of our reservation. I showed her the reservation on my phone prior to my phone dying. She got the manager but when I indicated that she saw the reservation on my phone, she never affirmed this. The manager did not apologize. He simply said there was nothing he could do and that I would have to wait 3 hours for a table for 2 unless I wanted to sit at the bar, which was first come, first served. We sat at the bar and had wonderful service from the bartender. Within 20 minutes of sitting down, a table opened and was never sat. The manager never checked on us or offered us this table. Terrible managing. Pig ears and tails and bone marrow were great! Would eat here again"

  • "A very disappointing meal. WE had had a terrific dinner there a couple of years ago; we both got carne asada, which had a divine sauce. But the food this time was tasteless. The fried chicken in the tacos was dry and unseasoned. The queso fundida was a tasteless, oily, stringy mess that was impossible to eat with the limp tasteless tacos (no hint of corn in their taste). There was no heat, no tang from the pickled veggies. We each tasted the two dishes a couple of times, then stopped. I had the enchilades verdes, which was edible, but truly ordinary. Could have had a better meal at Taco Bell. We will not be back."

  • "Well such a let down ,we loved the old LOLITA,the new is nothing like it ,the look of the restaurant is ok but the food was not so ,very spicy and portions so little but most of we did not like the taste .There was 4 of us and sorry to say we DID NOT ENJOY IT ."

  • "Had a great time celebrating a friend's birthday. The tacos, entrees, corn, and drinks were awesome. Def going back!"

  • "The food & service were fantastic but, the noise leave was out of control! It's a very small restaurant & the tables are practically packed on top of one another; I could barely carry a conversation with the person across the table from me. I would definitely go again; next time maybe a week night though."

  • "That is what Lolita feels like, in terms of ambiance…same room as Barbuzzo: Loud, tight seating and very dim light. We ended up choosing to sit at the bar because it,felt more spacious than table seating. Hit and miss with food. Loved the grilled octopus and tacos are well done. Watermelon salad was uninspiring, even though so seasonal, and not a lot of vegetable choices, but the chopped salad was good and big enough to share. My dining partner got some enchilada thing that was huge, but looked gloppy. Hard to see with such low light. I miss the intimacy and BYOT of old Lolita."

  • "Wonderful gourmet Mexican food! There is no question that the food at Lolita is better than El Vez. One of the greatest attractions in the past was that Lolita was BYOT (Bring Your Own Tequila). While I miss this aspect, they are still pumping out delicious guacamole and specialty tacos (my two favorites)."

  • "This was the first time my fiancé and I had been back since they re-opened and we couldn't be happier. This is one of our favorite places to eat in Philly and it's still just as good. We had a table outside on a beautiful night (my fiancé's birthday) and the food was great as was our server. Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "Everything was amazing, but particularly the fried squash blossoms. And it was lovely that the menu was labeled in terms of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. What a great restaurant!"

  • "Lots of buzz, but don't know that it is worthy. Purportedly Mexican street food, but my local place has better food. Had short rib loaded nachos, but more shaved radishes and soggy chips than anything else. Stuffed squash blossoms were tasty, but seasonally limited. Renowned house margarita was akin to lemonade. Tamale with duck fat was quite tasty."

  • "Place was a bit disappointing especially given their other restaurants on the street which we really liked. Was really hoping for better. Food was good but nothing extraordinary and fell short of expectations. Food came out so quickly. Service was less than optimal. Sat down and told server of food allergy to have him come back five minutes later and ask if anyone had any food allergies. Didn't instill a lot of confidence. When will restaurants stop saying that food will come out of the kitchen as prepared? Plates kept coming before we were even done with the last. Not sure we will rush back."

  • "Food is good. Drinks are great but i miss the BYO days because it made this place very reasonible. Post BYO era has some sticker shock but not enough to drive me away."

  • "Only complaint: The family style plates were a little too big for the tables. The food was great! Very flavorful. Good portion sizes and value for the cost. The Korean BBQ tacos were the stellar standout. Best tres leches cake I've ever had. I can't wait to go back. Check it out!"

  • "Had a wonderful time with friends enjoying the DIY Taco Night special. $35 per person included a 3-course meal with chips/salsas and salad for course 1 - choice of taco for course 2 & a wonderful tres leches cake for dessert. Great drinks, great food, good service & wonderful location in the heart of the I Heart 13th street restaurant row. Highly recommend."

  • "From start to finish, my boyfriend and I were so impressed with the entire experience on our date night. Our servicer was courteous, attentive, and really went above and beyond to answer our questions and describe the dishes to us. The food was flavorful and outstanding and the prices are very reasonable! We had a blast and will definitely be back in the future!!"

  • "The pre-renovation Carne Asada was my husband's favorite dish in town and the reason we came to Lolita. The new Carne Asada might be the same recipe, but it just wasn't quite as good! It was extremely salty. There wasn't as much sauce. The plantain chip was stale. And the yucca was just OK. One of the steaks was very small. It used to be a sublime dish, and now it's just pretty good. We're hoping it was an off night (July 4th, Thursday) because we do love Lolita."

  • "We were very pleased with the variety on the menu. We do not eat meat or shellfish, but there was plenty of courses to choose from. The mixture of flavors on each plate were very interesting and delicious. Next time, hopefully we can have drinks and maybe a dessert. Will definitely return."

  • "I enjoyed the food. Very different vibe from El Vez just down the street and the other Mexican Restraunts in the city. Very small place, very cute. I am always eating late and loved that they were open late. The servers were slow...and the place was almost empty. I don't know where they were hiding. They were very professional when we they were around. It was a Tuesday night. The portions are small, but that is just fine for me any my friend. We love good food but can't eat a lot of it."

  • "We enjoyed all our meals at Lolita. The food is definitely not you father's American Mexican. Interesting spices and tastes. With small plate option for trying many dishes. Like Mexican spices this is a level up and a solid experience."

  • "Ate at Lolita for the first time on Friday night and will surely be back. Everything we tried was delicious, from the guacamole with homemade tortilla, plantain, and malanga chips to the watermelon and beet salad, grilled octopus, and two kinds of tacos (fried chicken and pork shoulder--both delicious, but the pork was my favorite). Portions aren't huge, and are meant to be shared (think tapas style dining). Drink-wise, I started with the green garden margarita (amazing) and then tried the cucumber jalapeno (also very good). Our server was friendly and extraordinarily helpful. Most of what we ordered was at her recommendation, and she did not lead us astray. Would definitely recommend!"
