A word from Loi
“Loi will offer an original twist to Greek dining for brunch, lunch, cocktails and dinner,” says Maria Loi, who was recently appointed the International Ambassador of Greek Gastronomy for the renowned Chef’s Club of Greece. “The restaurant will share many of the Loi family recipes to traditional Greek dining, which have been passed down from my great grandmother. Loi is about real food, cooked with Greek olive oil and using authentic and fresh ingredients. It is about healthy and delicious dining that brings family and friends together.”Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The key to getting one of the special dishes not on the menu is to ask. I noticed Chef Maria Loi eating something with her sister. And I wanted it. I can't tell you the name. But it was heaven potatos slowly cooked with squash, tomato and onions and lsquid grilled into a ribbon of sweet tender lemony- and low cal deliciousness. Maria Loi took the food from her table and put it on mine. How can I get this? I asked. "Just call the restaurant early in the afternoon before you come for dinner." she said handing me her card. On my husband's birthday I did, and the surprise- meatballs steamed over cabbage with lemon sauce. Learning it was his birthday out came a dish of yogurt complete with candle-- gratis. As Maria Loi promised he loved it!"

  • "I had dinner here with a long-time friend whom I had not seen in a while. We sat - undisturbed - for almost three hours over dinner. Much to our surprise and delight, Loi treated us to free desserts and later served us yogurt and honey also on the house and we talked and talked and talked. I don;y know too many other places that will give you that time and generosity. Oh, btw, the food was great."

  • "Delicious food! Hospitable handsome hosts! Glorious talented Maria Loi in the Kitchen. Arrive hungry and leave happy. Try to order the moussaka, (one version is perfect for veggetarians) or the lamb or the fish. Loi is perfect duringPassover since their menu is always very gluten free."

  • "Had dinner here to celebrate a special birthday with our mother. There were 9 of us. The food was excellent. Fish superb, lamb delicious, appetizers diverse, wine list wide ranging. Our server could not have been warmer or more professional. When I made the reservation I requested a table in a quiet section, as our mother is essentially deaf. I made the request with the comfort of the diners. There would be a lot of loud voices coming from our table, the only way for our mother to hear. They gave us a separate room, a lovely welcoming space that was perfect for our group. It made a real difference for us and I'm sure for the other diners in the restaurant. A wonderful evening!"

  • "The modern Greek Cuisine is entirely enjoyable and satisfying. The fish is fresh, the lamb melts in your mouth and if your party includes vegetarians or gluten intolerants everyone will have delicious options, including the dark chocolate cake. Loi strives to please which is exactly how it should be in hospitality business. WIGB? I go back and so should you."

  • "Excellent food, as always; gracious reception by Maria Loi herself. Only problem was excessively long delay in ordering drinks, then receiving them, after being seated. However, this was more than compensated by "comping" of alcoholic beverages on final bill."

  • "Loi is a lovely grecian oasis on the Upper West side. Within walking distance of Lincoln Center it provides an affordable pre theater menu. The food, cocktails and extensive wine list are highly recommended. The staff are attentive. On the negative, and the only fault I found, was the wait staff's limited culinary knowledge. Our waiter could not identify the ingredients in one of our dishes."

  • "Loi was so exceptional that I went back the next night. Can't say enough good about the food, service, and ambience."

  • "I feel the same way about the menu at Loi as I do about where I want to sit-- it depends. Sometimes I want the clean simple fresh taste of the sea and order the lavraki (fka bronzino). Sometimes I want lamb (always want the lemon potatos) I always want the maroulli me feta salad shredded romaine with feta, scallions, dill and if you request hot peppers. It's a classically and consistantly great salad for any meal. Follow with octopus and beans. Sometimes I want the privacy and formality of the elegant white tableclothed dining room. It still feels special to my husband and I who had our first date there before Maria Loi left Greece to save us and teach us about real Greek Food. A seat in the lounge and a gl. of Greek Rose promises Spring."

  • "The vegetarian moussaka was dried out and was not eaten. The veal shank was all right but not something to rave over. But the service was responsive, solicitous, attentive and truly caring. We were offered a second dish to replace the moussaka and were comped for both the dish and offered dessert, gratis. This was beyond our expectations."

  • "I took a friend to Loi as a birthday present. The service friendly and very efficient, the space inviting. And after a fantastic green salad with nuts and candied figs I thought I had found a truly wonderful place. Then the mains came and I have to say they were a tad disappointing given the price. The moussaka was nicely flavored but small and over reliant on a béchamel topping. The lamb was nicer but still not spectacular. The dessert was wonderful however. The wine list could use some less expensive options ... Starts at $65 and up. I'll give it another try to sample some other menu options ... But there's a lot of competition in this neighborhood."

  • "We have enjoyed our experience at LOI many times, the ambiance, spaciousness and quiet. To dine in comfort and to hear who you arrived with can get to be a feat in a NYC restaurant. Chef LOI visits her guests, charms them and is most hospitable. The freshness of the ingrediants and simplicity of preparation is delightful. The home made Greek yogurt is the best! Every dessert is fabulous. The eggplant with cheese first course is remarkable. Mousakka is delicious only a small portion for an entre."

  • "Having wanted to try Loi for a long time we finally did. The staff were very pleasant even though the waiters dropped food around as well as on the plates. The octopus was so tough as to be almost impossible to cut and chew. The aubergine in the moussaka were burnt and dried out. The baby lamb, which we requested medium rare arrived very brown and dried out. Everything was sadly overcooked. If you want good Greek food we prefer Periyali."

  • "Now that the weather has warmed up people are moving around again. Dropping in on friends and family. Great fun! But in NYC who has a refrigerator large enough to feed 8 people for dinner with no notice. Go to LOI! They'll put tables together take care of the wine and just smile if you apologize for the mixture of outfits. I know I just ran the expereiment for you. Two people from Texas, two from California, one from Westchester, one from Florida and two from Manhattan. What a pleasure to have a large group without any fuss in such a good restaurant. NOT one complaint. A First, at least in my family. The meat eaters, the vegetarians, and piscatorians ALL happy. And it's not just me, everyone thinks the housemade yogurt is the best."

  • "From the arrogant maitre 'd who responded to my request for a booth (there were 4 empty and I had asked for one when I made the reservation ) - "Madame, what did you expect, it's Friday night!" Then it took forever for the waiter to take our drink order and 45 minutes to fill it. Service went from bad to worse, bread without oil, no food order taken for another 40 minutes and then delayed, "because the kitchen didn't cook it properly", then the portions were so small that a 6 year old chlld would have left hungry and the food was tasteless. Not much else to say, except it was awful! Won't go back!!"

  • "I thought the choices for the restaurant week menu were pretty weak. I ordered the salmon. When it arrived at the table it looked comical. The salmon fillet was so tiny in this big plate. The waiter told me it was small because it's part of the restaurant week menu. The salmon wasn't even that good....plus it was lukewarm. I thought the idea of restaurant week was to impress new customers...."

  • "The chef is spectacular, the wait staff is so sweet, and the food is divine! the appetizers are as amazing as the main course (greek yogurt gets dip with pita was my favorite!), and the desserts were equally fantastic. great restaurant, i'd highly recommend it!"

  • "This is one of our favorite dining places. The restaurant is spacious and beautiful and the service attentive. A varied menu, with a number of vegetarian options. Especially notable: the grape leaves with yogurt and pita and biscuits served to everyone, the pastitsio and moussaka (you can sometimes get a vegetarian version), the lamb and fish entrees. We've been happy to bring friends there who are delighted and promise to come back."

  • "Loi has been one of my neighborhood favorites but during restaurant week it was a real disappointment. The service felt insincere, too fawning, and very long on bringing the wine. Most of all, though I am not a big eater, the portions were outrageously small. There is no sophistication in stinginess."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "The waitress told us that since it was restaurant week that the portions would be smaller...but wasn't ready for two small corners of spanikopita. She also came over with the wine in hand to pour another glass for my friend when it was not requested or wanted. Rather pushy. On the flip side, there were lovely stuffed grape leaf for amuse bouche and a yogurt and honey desert gratis. Also a great biscuit (shortbready) in the bread bowl. But overall the tiny portion of the appetizer and especially entree was a deal breaker."

  • "It's too hard to move in NYC. And they still haven't figured out how to add spandex to Sheetrock. My family is condemned to the meals that come out of a one tushy kitchen. They've survived. But everyone is much happier since Maria Loi has opened her kitchen. Yes, just like home if you love what you're eating you can order it to go for lunch, too. The moussaka nukes a dream. My son prefers Maria Loi's chicken soup to mine. I just learned I prefer Maria's stuffed cabbage to my grandmothers. If it's on special and if your most precious childhood memories involve your grandmother Order it! Request it. Apparently, the bean soup inspires equal gluttony, I'm told. A man with a Cypriot yaya keeps shutting me out. Maybe he'll swap for cabbage?"

  • "In atmosphere, Loi is a rare combination of elegance and warmth. The dining room is beautiful with attention paid to the distance between the tables, and an inventive layout that facilitates both private conversation and people-watching. The food ranks with the best Greek cuisine that I have had; each dish , though solidly grounded in the classics, has a freshness and subtlety. Loi reminded me of why it is that one goes to restaurants: to be taken care of in all ways."

  • "Went to Loi for the first time since the reviews were excellent. Thought I would select restaurant week menu, but decided on other selections. I chose arugula salad with hazelnuts and candied figs with fig dressing. The salad came which actually seemed to be baby spinach, with one tiny piece of fig, 3 hazelnuts and barely dressing. I also ordered moussaka which should be excellent. Again, major disappointment. It came in a small casserole, the eggplant on bottom burnt, and bechamel sauce, hard with sprinkled cheese on top. Very disappointed and will not return"

  • "Cutting to the chase, the grouper was amazingly delicious, different (couscous with lemon and little lemon potatoes and asparagus all on one plate. Plus the fresh, nice sized portion of grouper). The lamb, however, was barely edible. Although the gravy was tasty, it was a plate of bones and fat. If I had ordered it I would have sent it back to the kitchen. My husband is far more tolerant. I will go back for the grouper. I will crave that grouper."

  • "I loved the ambiance (lighting and soft music) and spaciousness of this restaurant. Also, the complimentary corm bread and yogurt that was offered when we were perusing the menu was delicious! But, we ordered the prix fixe menu (because it was Restaurant Week) and the food was just okay. The dessert, however, was absolutely delicious! I wish the salad and entree were as good as the ambiance and sweets!"

  • "I have dined here on many occasions with friends, family, and business associates. Each time, it felt as though we were visiting someone's beautifully appointed home rather than a restaurant. Maria, the chef/owner, effortlessly makes all of her customers feel like a VIP, whether this is their first visit or their 50th. I'm not the only one who feels this way; all my guests give me the same feedback. This truly is a gem of a restaurant, and I feel lucky to live two blocks away so that I can patronize it frequently."

  • "Authentic and absolutely delicious modern Greek food. Maria Loi is a charming and generous host. The food is a perfect combination of peasent sensibilities carefully cooked with the attention to detail that only a fine kitchen produces. The presence of visiting Greeks is a sign of the quality. The more they eat, the more they order filling their bellies and hearts with the flavors of home. We became honorary Greeks on our third visit. Highly recomended."

  • "Small portions, but no complaint, other than pita bread was dry and crisp, not the way I like it. Welcoming atmosphere! Pedestal under table, not good for folks like me who are short, and like to pull up to the table as closely as possible. Mgt. tried to be accommodating, but all the tables are thusly configured."

  • "Up front is the bar area, the lively modern Greek Taverna. Colorful, delicious with the latest and greatest Greek music, wines & food. Walk through and a lovely gracious proper white table clothed restaurant awaits your pleasure. There are also private dining rooms ranging from cozy to a grand space overloooking the busy kitchen. Most critically, for the hunger eater where ever you sit the same glorious Greek Food comes out of the same kitchen. The healthy perfectation of food- revelatory to first timers - delights Greeks from the tri state region, anywhere along the Aegean Sea, and Cyprus nearly weep from the taste that thought was lost along with their grandmothers. The key to the sucess of each is celebrated chef owner Maria Loi."

  • "The food was pedestrian at best. Indeed, there was nothing served (from soup to nuts) that demonstrated that a professional, nor even a good cook, was doing the cooking. Even the presentation was amateurish. The service was excellent as was the decor, but ultimately the real reason to go to a restaurant is for the food. Oh, did I mention that the price point was that of a 3 point Michelin star restaurant, i.e. ridiculous for the the very poor food. Don't go!!"

  • "Finally, Loi is open for Sunday lunch. You can have that only in the movies experience platters of lamb, tasty salads, brilliant fish and not have to do the dishes. The fighting and laughing is your responsilbilty. Several generations can dine happily at Loi and on Sunday at an hour that is grandma and toddler friendly. Any one can have a great meal at any time, but sunday has always been a special time for family. And, don't stress Maria Loi and her staff are all gaga for babies and small children. Sit back, have a glass or two of the newest first in New York Greek wine and relax. It's good enough to get out of your pjamas for."

She even returned after dinner and gave us a tour of the private dining rooms. All in all, a great experience."
