A word from Local Roots - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Located in Roanoke's Historic Grandin District, Local Roots Restaurant celebrates the absolute best of the region, from locally-farmed vegetables and meat to the handcrafted dining room tables produced by area artisans.

Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.

Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

Diner Reviews
  • "We stumbled across an add for this place and decided to try it out. We were very glad we did. Good food is hard to find in Roanoke - but we loved this place. We had the charcuterie, risotto, and lamb - all were creative and delicious. In addition both the service and ambiance were excellent. There was one exception - the bread pudding was a disappointment. It was more topping than bread pudding and both too rich and too salty. Hopefully they will revisit this recipe. The neighborhood is also quite charming and a place we had never been before. We will certainly go back th next time we are in Roanoke."

  • "I was passing through Roanoke for work and stopped here for dinner. It was such an amazing meal and a wonderful surprise. Everything we had was delicious, the staff were all very friendly. The chef was amazing, and the owner was the nicest woman ever!"

  • "Our food was great and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole dinner out at Local Roots. The portions were a good size and everything was cook just right. The salad was just ok, but we both loved our main course. The decor is pretty sparse and a little shabby, but I guess that's part of the charm."

  • "The food and drinks are very good and fresh although the drinks are priced on the high side. We were with friends. We shared mussels which were fabulous. We order burgers from the bar menu which are cooked to order and were delicious. Our friends had the bread pudding which has a local roots personal touch and was very tasty. My wife and I shared the chocolate (not sure what it was called), but it just was not making it. The hard chocolate was to large and could not be cut easily. We were not happy with our dessert. It was extremely pricy ($90) for a burger, a cocktail (1 ea.), a shared app & (1) dessert. We enjoy the food and the environment is pleasant, but cost does figure into our dining experience."

  • "Trout Bene! Even if you don't love Trout, they use a very thin slice (smoked?). kind of like Lox. Adds just the amount of saltiness. Veggie frittata pretty good as well. Flavor less robust of course! Blood orange mimosa thingy, yes. Get a window seat, great people watching in Grandin Village. Bring out of town guests, I did. Success."

  • "The food and service are always top-notch! A great night out with friends. You won't find anything more local or fresh in the whole city of Roanoke! It's nice to enjoy time out without having to worry about where your food comes from. Local and organic ingredients that come together in superb dishes that will leave you stratified but your taste buds wanting more. Highly recommend the 7 cheese platter, always a hit! We will assuredly be back"

  • "I like the concept of Farm to Table Food. Took my Mother here for her birthday. She was reluctant at first, but thought the whole experience was delightful. Loved the food! Servers are very good, very attentive. Have good drinks as well and have an active bar scene that is not disruptive to the dining."

  • "Since moving back to Roanoke, I've been trying to find local restaurants that are unique to the area. I've been very pleased with Local Roots and their food is amazing. I really love their ethical values and local food sources - although I wish the menu was a bit bigger, as a vegetarian, I would have trouble finding something to eat for dinner but for brunch, I encountered no problems! The place was buzzing with friendly customers and staff - it is also very kid-friendly, we really enjoyed our Sunday brunch last week."

  • "My husband and I went for the first time this past Saturday. When we walked in there was a soft ambience about the restaurant, server was very knowledgeable about the food and wine list. The food was amazing. I would definitely visit again."

  • "We always go to Local Roots for dinner and/or Sunday brunch when we are visiting in Roanoke. Always a creative and great meal with sensible portions. The bison steak, although delicious, was a little chewy this visit. We ordered custard for dessert upon strong recommendation from our server. It was incredible!! Best I've ever had!!"

  • "Local Roots is definitely one of my favorites. I went there for my birthday, and the food and the service was fantastic as it has always been. The variety of the plates is outstanding, and you can be sure that whatever you get that your dish will be a work of art and a display of a large variety of cooking techniques. It's absolutely a great experience every time!"

  • "We've always loved Local Roots. Farm to table really is the way to get the freshest, local ingredients. They are very accomidating to my special food requests (no bones, skinless chicken etc). The menu options have grown recently and the food is always beautifully prepared. The wait staff is top notch, friendly and knowledgeable. So glad to have this gem in my neighborhood."

  • "My sister and I were visiting Roanoke to attend a Virginia Tech football game. We chose a dinner at a restaurant that focused on locally grown food. I found "Local Roots" on Open Table and the reviews were excellent, so I booked it. Local Roots lived up to the wonderful reviews. Our table, right in the window, was ready for us when we got there. We chose a hand-crafted cocktail that was one of the best drinks either of us have had. My drink was the Ginger-craveworthy. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. We both had salads which contained original ingredients that blended together for a lovely first course. Then, I had the duck confit and my sister had the pork ragu. Both were perfectly cooked. I strongly recommend Local Roots!"

  • "The farm trout sounded splendid, as did the chicken breast served with wood-fired shiitakes, but something more hearty seemed in order. The waiter suggested the bar menu, where we found a pub burger drenched in spicy pimento cheese on a Brioche bun with large steak fries. It was cooked to a delightful medium to medium-rare. Quite a find on an autumn Saturday night in Roanoke."

  • "Arriving early for our reservation we were seated and selected good red wines, malbec & grannacha from a wide ranging list. The cheese plate at the start was excellent - although the cheeses were not complex - it was the points of contrast on the artfully arranged serving slate that gave us pause. Pickled onions, relish, pickles, horseradish infused chutney, fig jam, nuts, seeds and flatbread. Glorious - much as the fabulous bread pudding dessert - a range of flavors and textures. The roasted heritage chicken leg was excellent as well - flavors and texture fantastic. The special seafood mix cornmeal fried with citrus was very good. The entire meal was an inspiring work of flavor and texture pairing and presentation. Bravo!"
