A word from Local Roots - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Located in Roanoke's Historic Grandin District, Local Roots Restaurant celebrates the absolute best of the region, from locally-farmed vegetables and meat to the handcrafted dining room tables produced by area artisans.

Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.

Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

  • "A friend recommended Local Roots, saying it was her favorite restaurant. I use only organic ingredients and this restaurant satisfies my needs. I've visited several times now and have not been disappointed once. The food is fresh, the pairings are unique, the presentation is beautiful and the staff is warm and welcoming."

  • "We found out about this restaurant cruising around the Internet and what a wonderful find it is! Unfortunately, we don't often travel to Roanoke, however, we will make an opportunity to return. The service was impeccable; the preparations were thoughtful, flavorful, and a treat!!!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Local Roots. The ambiance was cozy and artsy. A mix of ages and styles of people, it was interesting to people watch as we waited for our food and sipped on wine. The food was fresh and flavorful. The service was friendly and informed. The only downfall was perhaps the wait time for the food -- while I don't like to rush a meal, everything took a really long time to come out. In any case, we enjoyed the night and the food was exceptional."

  • "Local Roots is an excellent restaurant. We were celebrating a birthday on this particular occasion. We were allowed time to chat, catch up and relax after an hours drive. I had their eggs benedict which was exceptional. My eggs were cooked to perfection. Our waiter was attentive but not a member of our party. Everyone at our table enjoyed their choices from trout to french toast and biscuits. I am a cook and a foodie and Local Roots met my needs and left an impression. I look forward to going there for dinner."

  • "This place was a great find! We are from Washington DC, so we were pleased to experience two apps, two entrees, a decent bottle of wine and a shared dessert for around $125 before gratuity. The food was fresh and flavorful and the service was impeccable. The entree portions were adequate and on par with fine dining. Our only nit was the wine list to which one might apply some creativity and depth. Overall, this was an outstanding meal and an excellent value for the money. We shall return..."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner! The owner came over to welcome us and to tell us about his restaurant. All the food is locally grown and they have local wines as well."

  • "My wife and I love Local Roots. It's perfect if you want to splurge or simply catch a drink and lighter fare."

  • "The cheese plate was delicious as was our main courses. This place has a wonderful beer club too, and after joining you can get beer flights of their ever changing drafts (plus discounted growler fills). Wonderful place. I can't wait to come back for farther's day."

  • "I went here with a group of friends for a Sunday "family dinner," wherein the usual dinner menu is jettisoned and they serve locally-sourced, seasonal fare that is meant to be shared among a group. There were lamb, trout and vegetarian entree choices, all of which were delicious. The cocktails were delicious and the desserts were also tasty and well-done. It is certainly one of the better restaurants in the area and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates locally sourced food that is simple and cooked well."

  • "Fantastic food in a family atmosphere. The decor was wonderful and the host was truly friendly! The food was all local and delicious. If only I lived in Roanoke, I would go there every week!"

  • "Hard to say enough good - everything was spot on from the service to the wine flights to the kale salad to the oysters to the fish entrees. Presentations and combinations of flavors make this the best restaurant in Roanoke/Salem without the snootiness."

  • "The food was excellent, really enjoyed the drinks and ambiance as well. However, we had 5 people at our table and the salad had VERY small portions, maybe enough for 2 people. Kind of pricey but expected that before I came. "

  • "Each dish was amazing. The salads were the best I've had, complex and savory. So was the lamb bolognese. Wish I could try everything. A happy find while visiting Virginia."

  • "Local Roots is a great find in Roanoke. The culinary team blend delicious fresh ingredients to make incredible 5 star meals. Try the mussels ....Wow and the trout share, delicious!! "

  • "We found this restaurant on Open Table while organizing a road trip to handle family business. We opted for the Chef's tasting and also added on the wine pairings. The bill ended up being expensive, but the food, service and atmosphere were worth it. The chef prepared a unique selection of dishes, introduced us to local produce and some ecclectic dishes (lamb liver with rye crackers and "saurkraut"). The regular menu was much more reasonable in price, but since we were only passing through, we went for the gusto! We will be back for another adventure here, and highly recommend the regular menu to people looking for a delicious weeknight meal."

  • "We stumbled across an add for this place and decided to try it out. We were very glad we did. Good food is hard to find in Roanoke - but we loved this place. We had the charcuterie, risotto, and lamb - all were creative and delicious. In addition both the service and ambiance were excellent. There was one exception - the bread pudding was a disappointment. It was more topping than bread pudding and both too rich and too salty. Hopefully they will revisit this recipe. The neighborhood is also quite charming and a place we had never been before. We will certainly go back th next time we are in Roanoke."

  • "I was passing through Roanoke for work and stopped here for dinner. It was such an amazing meal and a wonderful surprise. Everything we had was delicious, the staff were all very friendly. The chef was amazing, and the owner was the nicest woman ever!"

  • "Our food was great and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole dinner out at Local Roots. The portions were a good size and everything was cook just right. The salad was just ok, but we both loved our main course. The decor is pretty sparse and a little shabby, but I guess that's part of the charm."

  • "The food and drinks are very good and fresh although the drinks are priced on the high side. We were with friends. We shared mussels which were fabulous. We order burgers from the bar menu which are cooked to order and were delicious. Our friends had the bread pudding which has a local roots personal touch and was very tasty. My wife and I shared the chocolate (not sure what it was called), but it just was not making it. The hard chocolate was to large and could not be cut easily. We were not happy with our dessert. It was extremely pricy ($90) for a burger, a cocktail (1 ea.), a shared app & (1) dessert. We enjoy the food and the environment is pleasant, but cost does figure into our dining experience."

  • "Trout Bene! Even if you don't love Trout, they use a very thin slice (smoked?). kind of like Lox. Adds just the amount of saltiness. Veggie frittata pretty good as well. Flavor less robust of course! Blood orange mimosa thingy, yes. Get a window seat, great people watching in Grandin Village. Bring out of town guests, I did. Success."

  • "The food and service are always top-notch! A great night out with friends. You won't find anything more local or fresh in the whole city of Roanoke! It's nice to enjoy time out without having to worry about where your food comes from. Local and organic ingredients that come together in superb dishes that will leave you stratified but your taste buds wanting more. Highly recommend the 7 cheese platter, always a hit! We will assuredly be back"

  • "Since moving back to Roanoke, I've been trying to find local restaurants that are unique to the area. I've been very pleased with Local Roots and their food is amazing. I really love their ethical values and local food sources - although I wish the menu was a bit bigger, as a vegetarian, I would have trouble finding something to eat for dinner but for brunch, I encountered no problems! The place was buzzing with friendly customers and staff - it is also very kid-friendly, we really enjoyed our Sunday brunch last week."

  • "My husband and I went for the first time this past Saturday. When we walked in there was a soft ambience about the restaurant, server was very knowledgeable about the food and wine list. The food was amazing. I would definitely visit again."

  • "We always go to Local Roots for dinner and/or Sunday brunch when we are visiting in Roanoke. Always a creative and great meal with sensible portions. The bison steak, although delicious, was a little chewy this visit. We ordered custard for dessert upon strong recommendation from our server. It was incredible!! Best I've ever had!!"

  • "Local Roots is definitely one of my favorites. I went there for my birthday, and the food and the service was fantastic as it has always been. The variety of the plates is outstanding, and you can be sure that whatever you get that your dish will be a work of art and a display of a large variety of cooking techniques. It's absolutely a great experience every time!"

  • "We've always loved Local Roots. Farm to table really is the way to get the freshest, local ingredients. They are very accomidating to my special food requests (no bones, skinless chicken etc). The menu options have grown recently and the food is always beautifully prepared. The wait staff is top notch, friendly and knowledgeable. So glad to have this gem in my neighborhood."

  • "My sister and I were visiting Roanoke to attend a Virginia Tech football game. We chose a dinner at a restaurant that focused on locally grown food. I found "Local Roots" on Open Table and the reviews were excellent, so I booked it. Local Roots lived up to the wonderful reviews. Our table, right in the window, was ready for us when we got there. We chose a hand-crafted cocktail that was one of the best drinks either of us have had. My drink was the Ginger-craveworthy. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. We both had salads which contained original ingredients that blended together for a lovely first course. Then, I had the duck confit and my sister had the pork ragu. Both were perfectly cooked. I strongly recommend Local Roots!"

  • "The farm trout sounded splendid, as did the chicken breast served with wood-fired shiitakes, but something more hearty seemed in order. The waiter suggested the bar menu, where we found a pub burger drenched in spicy pimento cheese on a Brioche bun with large steak fries. It was cooked to a delightful medium to medium-rare. Quite a find on an autumn Saturday night in Roanoke."

  • "Arriving early for our reservation we were seated and selected good red wines, malbec & grannacha from a wide ranging list. The cheese plate at the start was excellent - although the cheeses were not complex - it was the points of contrast on the artfully arranged serving slate that gave us pause. Pickled onions, relish, pickles, horseradish infused chutney, fig jam, nuts, seeds and flatbread. Glorious - much as the fabulous bread pudding dessert - a range of flavors and textures. The roasted heritage chicken leg was excellent as well - flavors and texture fantastic. The special seafood mix cornmeal fried with citrus was very good. The entire meal was an inspiring work of flavor and texture pairing and presentation. Bravo!"

  • "My wife & I had stopped by for brunch previously, first dinner for us. Salad starters were excellent, the arugula salad with apples and soft hen egg was delicious. Main courses, bison and trout, were both outstanding. Server was friendly, very attentive and pointed out all the ingredients in the dishes. We will be back, soon."

  • "We were passing through Roanoke and wanted something other than roadside chain restaurant fare. This was a great find, unique, authentic, freindly. Very creative presentations and combinations."

  • "Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience. The dining area is light and airy and the restaurant is located in what appears to be a somewhat ecclectic neighborhood which seems fitting for the farm-to-table concept. The menu is rather limited, so this may not be a restaurant for finnicky eaters, although my finnicky dining companion did enjoy his selections with one exception: we both agreed that tomato sorbet absolutely does not say "dessert". The portions are not large, but what we ordered was superbly cooked, and we didn't leave hungry, it's just that it made it seem slightly overpriced. I would classify the restaurant as one fit for adventurous diners on a special outing."
