Diner Reviews
  • "Tucked away just steps from the lake is this lovely casual dining venue. Featuring only locally grown ingredients on their menu offers a refreshing option from mostly fast food choices in the area."

  • "I stumbled across Local Roots while walking to Navy Pier and was struck by the restaurant's logo and outdoor eating area. The food and service was absolutely amazing and extremely fresh. I really appreciated the emphasis on local and sustainable sources. The waiter was incredibly helpful and attentive. Everything about the restaurant was wonderful. This was by far the best meal I had while in Chicago. I hope to return!"

  • "Local Root offers interesting, flavorful food drawn as locally as possible. Our meal consisted of a pulled pork poutine appetizer (more than large enough to share), scallops, and a crab cake salad. Having recently relocated to Chicago from Massachusetts, we know the scallops were likely not local but very good and nicely spiced, but the crab cake was a bit disappointing atop an otherwise quite enjoyable salad. The coconut-lime mojito tasted like a regular mojito; the old fashioned was very subtly flavored with bourbon cherries. Local Root's decor is austere but functional. There is but a single location now, but based on our experience we suspect there will be more."

  • "Took my 13 yr old there for dinner on a recent trip to Chicago. We ordered the crab cakes, Mac and Cheese and a burger. It was all delicious. Everything is local and prepared/presented beautifully. The service was great. The prices were very reasonable too. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Chicago!"

  • "Generally I don't like dining out because of sensitivity to gluten but Beatrix I will keep going back to Beatrix whenever I get the chance. Love it!"

  • "First time to Chicago and stumbled upon this spot near the navy pier. There were many great options for drinks, starters, small plates and bigger plates. The hipster types working here are very laid back but attentive. I would definitely go back. Great dinner/drinks for two under $75 all in."

  • "Good food, but slightly overpriced for what it is."

  • "I've been coming here since it opened, and haven't had a bad experience as yet! The staff- Reggie, Jason, Chef Isaac, Abbey and more are so great and attentive. Menu items are always delicious from the burger to the salmon... and their deserts are amazing! Great for a quiet night when you want to catch up with friends and enjoy great local, wholesome food!"

  • "Good food. Server was spread out too thin. The kitchen was very slow getting our two dishes out and they were not that busy when we placed our order. Only thing that saved the meal, the food came out hot."

  • "Local Root specializes in local sourcing of all of their menu selections and catering to vegan and vegetarian as well as steak eaters. My husband enjoyed his delicious steak and frites. I chose a wild mushroom flatbread with truffle oil. It was definitely the best flatbread I have ever eaten. We shared a dinner salad that was served with a coffee balsamic dressing. The dressing had rich flavor with only a hint of coffee. The wait staff was attentive and helpful with suggestions and slight menu adjustments. Outdoor seating is on a neighborhood sidewalk with interesting people watching but not a great view of anything but a city street. Tuesday night was half price bottle of wine night which was a pleasant surprise. Worth a visit!"

  • "I wanted to keep walking when we saw this "restaurant" - it looked like a more hip Starbucks. There was a more appropriate, albeit, awkwardly decorated dining room further in, though. Everything was over seasoned - the remolaude sauce for the crab cake was so spicy, it would take your face off. And the salt - well, I've had my sodium in take for the week. Would like to see what this place does for lunch, so I'll give them another try. Only this lunch will be to go!"

  • "This place has 3.5 stars on yelp and is located really close to the W Lakeshore, where I was staying. I liked the fact that they use products from local IL farms and decided to try it out. I ordered the Champagne Chicken and fries. The chicken was really dry and the fries were too salty for my taste. I had some wine that was really good and the service was great. I might try them out for breakfast, but would not recommend, based on my meal. I went on a Thursday night and there was a live jazz band, which was also nice."

  • "I was expecting some great fresh flavors but got a stack of crumb coated rubbery eggplant slices drenched in a tomato sauce that was too heavy for the dish. A light creamy lemony sauce would have been better. The slightly burnt crumbs coating the eggplant took away from the eggplant. Freshly sourced foods deserve better."

  • "The food included lots of vegan options. Had a burger- overcooked. Others enjoyed their food. One in the party had a piece of plastic in her salad.. Not great impression. Seemed like service was a bit bored and uncommitted."

  • "We got stuck in traffic, arrived later than planned, so told waitress we didn't have much time. She paid attention and made sure we got out in time. Menu was small but very good choices that weren't all just rehash of other restaurants. Tastes were great. Food was fresh. Wine was also good."

  • "My husband had read some good reviews, so we checked it out last night. We were somewhat suspicious that the place was almost empty at 7pm, and when we stepped inside the reason started to become clear. There was such an over-whelming odor of some type of cleaning chemicals (I think that's what it was!) that we asked to be seated outside. When I ordered a glass of white wine, I was served something that had either been from a bottle opened weeks ago, else if it was a new bottle, the year was too long ago to still be good. The neighboring table said one of the items they ordered was good, but that the other one had too much oil in it (something with the mushrooms I think). We decided to pay for our drinks and leave without eating.""

  • "Was in town for a conference and wanted a quiet but good place for a small group dinner. This is the place- great food, good drinks and attentive service. Had the crab cakes and they were as good as all of the prior reviews. Then the eggplant tower- wonderful. "

  • "We love supporting Farm to Table type restaurants so we were thrilled to find Local Root. The food was so flavorful and fresh with unique combinations. The duck egg appetizer with asparagus and bacon was fabulous. Also loved the crab cakes, probably the best I've had. Vegetables were cooked perfectly and the desserts were sublime. Would love to go back and sit outside on a warm day. Great find, but wish there was valet parking. "

  • "Went with a friend who's gluten-intolerant. Almost everything on the menu, was ok, local and sounded amazing. We had chacuterie and cheese board (with Udi bread) - outstanding-- and steak frites. Wonderful bluegrass trio showed up. Staff was on their toes. Go. Great spot for the neighborhood. "

  • "Local Root was a wonderful foray into organic cuisine, and unexpected amidst the steakhouses it neighbours. Finally a restaurant that makes customers feel good about themselves and the world! I hope to see more places like this, and plan to come back soon. "

  • "Everything on the menu sounded and tasted so great! The food felt very light and my friend and I was able to order multiple items without feeling weighed down. The service was a bit slow though, but we both would be coming in again. :-) Very cute place! "

  • "The young chef came around and talked to diners during brunch. His passion for and love of local food show on the plate. The bacon is outstanding."

  • "Local Root is a bit off the beaten path but it has some really solid food. Hot warm bread delivered to our table to start the meal, solid flavors through all the small plates we ordered...was it the most amazing meal I've ever had? No but this is solid little joint that you don't have to fight to get into. Plus it's all local which I appreciate. Small plates we had included: pulled pork poutine (good but a little sweet), crab cakes (delicious!), skillet mac & cheese (meh), asparagus and duck egg (good but we let it get cold before trying it, still good IMO), flatbreads (both delicious), local salad (yum!). Waiter could have been a bit better but she was efficient and nice enough. All in all it was a good experience."

  • "While visiting from out of town we wanted a place with good food that was close to our hotel and didn't feel touristy. This fit the bill. Service was friendly and welcoming and the space was very comfortable on the snowy night. There were hits and misses with what we ordered (we ordered lots of small plates and shared and entrée). But would definitely be back. The cheese and charcuterie, baked portobello, salads were great. We ordered the poutine and figured that in order to keep it from getting soggy, as poutine tends to be, they put a heavy crisp on the potatoes. This was a great effort but it made them just taste over cooked. All in all, a small issue because the good overshadowed the over cooked potatoes. We left happy. "

  • "I'm vegan and it's just ok for me. I always want more light options: fruit bowls for dessert and edamame or some interesting protein (Chickpea fries or roasted? Lentil pate?) for starters. But my carnivorous friends were delighted with their food and the booze. It's a relaxing place to eat and so convenient to Navy Pier and the movies."

  • "The food and service were incredible. I had the soup and salad and fries. Ketchup was amazing. Who would have thought that organic can taste so good! I will be back for more when I am in town."

  • "This unprepossessing neighborhood spot has excellent locally-sourced food and attentive and knowledgeable service. The menu changes but always has great quality for the price. The chef, Isaac, came out to speak with us -- he is clearly committed to providing guests with an exceptional dining experience."

  • "When I waitperson responds to being handed the bill with two credit cards with "do you want to split it evenly, or should I charge each of you for what you ate," I'm in heaven. I are light with the caesar salad with champagne chicken. Chicken was shredded and unusually delicious. Loved the home made croutons. My guest was quite happy with the carrot/ginger soup (which looked like a puree). Reasonable prices for locally sourced ingredients. Fun ambience. Great place to go before going out to Navy Pier, which is a food desert."

  • "I chose this restaurant for its proximity to Navy pier. It was an easy walk for a lunch break during the Flower and Garden Show. All three courses were excellent. The bleu cheese fondue with the starter a particular hit."

  • "This place was amazing! The food was so great! There was tons of street parking, metered... I can' wait to go here again!"

  • "I took a customer from the area to lunch and found this to be a pretty good lunch spot. Nothing fancy, well lit, and offer light dishes. The loose tea selections were awesome. They also have a wine list and bar in back, just in case. Definitely recommend this for lunch."

  • "It's a great neighborhood restaurant that consistently has good food. The menu is varied enough for everyone's taste. We go as often as we can and we always enjoy our meal."

  • "Went here with friends for restaurant week but ended up ordering from the regular menu. The three of us each got an app and large plate and shared everything. Favorites were the truffle flatbread and the golden eggplant. Overall cozy spot with good food and atmosphere."

  • "My boyfriend and I made a reservation for restaurant week. The only special offered was a limited prix fixe, so we each ordered something different from the prepared menu. The salad was fresh, crisp and had a lovely dressing, but the meal after that was mediocre. The stuffed mushroom lacked flavor, the "frites" with the beef and potatoes were greasy and lukewarm, and the desserts were lackluster. I appreciate the concept (local and organic) but didn't think much of the execution."
