  • "College towns are not generally known for classy restaurants with contemporary gourmet food. Yet this gem in an industrial area of Harrisonburg could hold its own in Chicago, DC or New York (like those cities, you'll want to reserve early). One of the best meals we've ever had, and while it's not cheap, it also won't break the bank. We had dinner for five, including a bottle of wine, shared appetizer, desserts and tip, for about $300. It was a birthday party, so they wrote Happy Birthday in chocolate on the celebrant's dessert plate and tucked a candle in her crème bruleé. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and his recommendations were outstanding--including the sticky toffee pudding (if it's available, trust me, get it)."

  • "Harrisonburg, VA will never be described as a sophisticated city within which one finds countless choices when seeking a memorable dining experience. It's instead a small college town that offers largely boring choices between burgers and pizza. The Chop & Grill House is one of only two significant exceptions. The menu is interesting and the food is always quite good. Having been there a number of times, what always has impressed me the most has been the friendliness and the quality of the wait staff, but I'll quickly add that I've never had a bad meal at this restaurant."

  • "The food is terrific. I had a rib-eye steak cooked to perfection. The parsnip puree soup was dynamite. Even the olive oil with the focaccia bread was first rate. Wine list is fine, but could be more expansive, by the glass, given the quality of the restaurant. The service was terrific at first, but then she seemed to get distracted and was no where to be seen. I would have ordered another glass of wine, for example, had I been given the opportunity to do so. Oh well. The food is still great. No hesitation. On my next visit to Harrisonburg, I am there."

  • "Waiter did an excellent job of pleasing a difficult to please octogenarian. Food was excellent. I especially enjoyed the salmon and the grits. Mango barbecue sauce was a little too heavy on the barbecue flavor for me. Restaurant did an excellent job of honoring our request to be on the 1st floor since we had two who would have had difficulty managing the steps. An excellent evening."

  • "We had heard some good things about the Local Chop & Grill House, but we were always concerned that the cost of the food would be more than it was worth. We decided to go with my parents as a late Valentine's Day meal and could not be more happy. Everyone at our table ordered a different menu item, and everyone was happy. The scallop appetizer was to die for, and the entrees were all so wonderful with terrific rubs and sauces. While the prices may seem high for an every week place, if you have any type of special occasion or want to treat yourself once a month, this is the place to go. We will definitely be going back."

  • "I have eaten at Local Chop & Grill at least 5 times since they opened and have enjoyed every time! The food is always outstanding (I've had steak and pork chops there but my friends have raved about scallops and salmon as well - and I even tried the chicken livers - never had them before - for an appetizer and they were amazing!) and the serving sizes are perfect. You feel full when you leave but there's enough room for dessert without feeling stuffed after :) The staff is also very professional and friendly and also extremely knowledgeable about the menu and can help with recommendations. While it's a little pricey, it's worth every penny. I also love the fact that a lot of the food is local!"

  • "I was really impressed with the creative menu. My daughter was thrilled with the vegetarian options. She claimed it was the best tofu she's every had. Impressive for a restaurant that put both fowl and beast on the menu as well. My husband's duck was perfect and my filet was perfect inside. A real gem of a place hidden away in downtown Harrisonburg."

I eat there fairly often, it being one of my two favorite restaurants in Harrisonburg, a small town with lots of good choices. My fiancee and I had dinner there to celebrate being together. We both ordered Salmon, one done medium and the other medium well. We both ordered the seasoned house rub; I ordered the horseradish creme fraischee (sic) and I'm not sure what her dipping sauce was, but it was fantastic. The Salmon came cooked perfectly with great flavor and seasoning. The sides were also just wonderful. We also ordered drinks: their spice Sant' Gria and a Dark and Stormy, one of my favorite drinks. Great drinks, great restaurant!"

  • "The Chop House has a good formula. Local ingredients when possible. A few simple , tasty rubs and sauces to choose from. It's hard not to order the Duck every time. It's so good. And the fat doesn't go to waste - the Duckfat fries with Peach ketchup are amazing. Their locally sourced steaks and chops are equally wonderful, full of flavor you don't get from Sysco. Another thing you wouldn't expect to rave about - you have to try their mac 'n cheese. Seriously. Presentation is nice without a paragraph on each dish. Staff is well trained-there when you need them but stealthy otherwise. You can dress up, or go casual. In the warmer weather they have special meals on the patio where the suppliers of the local fare join you for a fun dinner."

  • "I had heard that this restaurant was excellent and am glad that I finally got to find out for myself. I took my 23-year-old son there for his birthday, and the experience was superb. The atmosphere is warm, the food incredible, and the staff was very attentive and professional. I ordered the petite filet, which was cooked perfectly, with brocolli and duck fat french fries (yum!), and my son ordered a bison burger with fries. We ordered the scallop appetizer, which was also fantastic. The margaritas are a must as well! The free valet parking was definitely a nice touch, especially on a cold night."

The guy who brought us some bread and olive oil also wrote a note telling us two kinds of olive oil we were having. We did not rate the noise level because we are deaf.
