A word from Local 188
Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine using local ingredients.
We have two versions of the classic paella, one has chourico and chicken and the other is all seafood. Menu is printed nightly with frequent changes in steak, soup, tortilla, gnocchi and risotto, as well as appetizer and fish specials.
Our menu offers a full range from tapas (small plates), raciones (medium plates) to entrees (large plates), creating a set of choices for any size appetite.
Weekend brunch is served from 9am till 2pm, Saturday and Sunday.
Our wine list is extensive featuring over 150 bottles with specialization in Spain, France and Italy.
Our beer list features local micros, seasonal, imports and domestics with selections from Bunker, Allagash, Dogfish head, Oxbow, Unibroue, Brooklyn and Smuttynose to name but a few.
Not to be overlooked is the ever changing array of house designed and made cocktails, many of which feature intriguing and delicious infusions.

  • "At the time of reservation, I mentioned it was for our 3 year wedding anniversary. Upon our arrival, we were seated to a nice quiet corner table away from crowds and greeted by a friendly waitperson. The service and meal were both wonderful and so were desserts; lemon & blood orange sorbet with black sesame paste and maple ricotta cheesecake with black peppered bacon. At the end of our dinner, we were told that not just one but both fabulous desserts were on house to wish us a happy anniversary! We also received a lovely print by Patrick Corrigan, an artist and a co-owner of the restaurant as a gift. We would have given them 5 stars just for their food and service regardless, but with their hospitality, we would like to add one more star!"

  • "Food was very different and good. We were worried about portion sizes and wondered if we might not still be hungry based on what our waitress had said, but that wasn't the case at all. We shared a few tapas appetizers and each had a fresh, delicious salad before each picking a different raciones to indulge in. Everything was out of this world and we had no room for dessert."

Trying a few different tapas and dishes and sharing them with your party is perhaps the best way to experience what they have to offer. Often their food is local, organic, healthy and tasty. I would describe the ambience as eclectic ellegance. They have an elegant bar as well as a nice dinning area. Excellent service, atmosphere, and food!"

  • "My second time here but my husbands first. We both had a starter salad and an entree. We both enjoyed everything . The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped me find dairy free alternatives. Everything was fresh and tasty. The place was hopping but we were never rushed. I would recommend this restaurant and an added bonus is that they have off street parking!"

  • "Local 188 was great..we originally had a reservation at a restaurant we have been to , but looking for somewhere new worked out We got an 8:30pm reservation (the only one left aside from a 5:30pm), place was very loud, and tables filled up fast. We started with 3 tapas, the patatas bravas, pickle plate, and deviled eggs...all awesome. We then shared the seafood paella, which took a long time to come out due to a misunderstanding between the waitress and chef, which the waitress apologized for. When it finally came out, it was delicious!! though a little salty. We got a comp. dessert as an apology. Overall, great dinner although we wish it was a little quieter and also not so smokey. The open kitchen was good/bad because of this."

  • "Showed up on time and were seated promptly which was great. Being a Spanish restaurant my girlfriend tried the house Sangria which was not a good choice and tasted of poor champagne mostly. For our appetizer we had the deviled eggs which tasted mainly like fried onions yet I can't recall there being mention of onions on the menu and were a bit runny. For my main entree and something not found often in America I tried the pallella, that tasted more like brown rice soup and nothing like I recall in Barcelona. I now know why this is rarely served in the US despite its simplicity. To top the whole thing off the meal was $100 and not close to worth half. It's a wonder how this place is so highly regarded in the area."

  • "We had read about Local 188 before dining there. In our experience, it lives up to its press. Service was excellent: our waitress was very helpful and patient with our questions about the Spanish names on the menu, and food was served promptly. Dishes were attractively presented and delicious. We were there on a relatively slow Sunday evening, and the dining room was less than half-full, but there were two large parties there (apparently a frequent occurrence as there are two or more tables that seat 10+ people), both having a great time. There's also lounge seating with sofas and low tables in the middle of the room, very inviting. As we were in an alcove, we had no trouble with the noise of the large parties, but the room can be loud."

  • "Portions have gotten more "small plate" than in the past. Waitperson made a point of telling me the hangar steak was "only 4 oz. so you might want to order something else with it." Felt a little strange...suspected she had been directed to do so with a goal toward trying to up the tab. My dinner mate and I shared a delicious but very small appetizer (3 stuffed dates), and we each had a good, but under-dressed beet salad. I definitely would have still felt hungry if I had only ordered the entree, which by the way, was very good. It's not the best restaurant in town but it's consistently good and a fun place to meet a friend for dinner."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in Portland. Every time I go there, each menu item elicits a "this is sooooo good!" Most recently dined on heavenly olives, fresh scallop ceviche, sweet potato gnocchi, and incredibly fresh salad. Their sangria is wonderful, too! Desserts are not as impressive, but very good cappucino. The atmosphere is comfy and homey - the lighting is great and there is always big new art from local artists on the walls.Love it!!"

  • "This was the second time we have been here, and once again it was outstanding. Their menu was slightly different so we tried a few new things off their tapas menu, and got a salad and an entree. Everything was fantastic (we got the Beet Salad, the Gnocchi, the Mussels, the Patatas Bravas, and the Flat Bread with Hummus) and we would have ordered all of those things again. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Portland!"

  • "Whether we're at Local for brunch, dinner, or drinks and tapas at the bar, we consistently receive great service, and excellent food. It's not a typical restaurant, but rather a hipstery mish-mash of locally-sourced Spanish/new world cuisine. Never had a bad dish, although I often end up with something I never thought would be a fave, and turned out to be awesome. Diners must be willing to try new foods and styles of preparation!"

The bread was 5 star, the wine was 5 star, chicken livers 10 stars, beet salad 5 star, fish special 2, flank steak was cold and ribs were 2. the food was better over a year ago but the restaurant did not promote itself as "Spanish cuisine". Still called Local 188 but very inconsistent food - what has changed? Would try again no my own but if the same would not recommend for a group outing."

  • "We ordered seared scallops and thinly sliced, marinated steak plate from the Tapas menu. The scallops had a medium sear to them with a nice taste of the butter they were cooked in. My steak was very tender and similarly marinated so not an overpowering taste, just enough to enhance the flavor of the meat. Maine courses were paella with chourico, mussels, clams, and saffron rice. It was in a flavorful broth that didn't drown the ingredients but fused with the rice and proteins equally. My dish, braised short rib with mashed potatoes, and kale. The meat was flavorful, tender, and extremely delicious. The portion was enough so I took nearly half of my meal home. Great service, attentive without the server hovering."

  • "The atmosphere at Local 188 is really quite artsy, comfortable and attractive. After perusing the menu, we decided to go with tapas and small plates. 5 tapas was more than enough for the 2 of us and we had leftovers. My husband ordered a lemon ginger drink that was out of this world. My only criticism is that the tapas almost all came out at the same time. We both absolutely loved the fish cakes. The flat bread with humus and the olives were great. I loved the mushroom and almond sauté, but my husband did not. My husband loved the gnocchi, but I found the sauce a bit spicy, although the kale on the side was yummy. For desert we shared the dark chocolate panna cota - so rich we could not finish it between the two of us. We'll be back!"
