Local 188 is one of my top picks in Portland. It's great for any time of the day (brunch is especially killer), and the drinks are always phenomenal!! Our table was ready when we got there and I was impressed that we snagged a reservation on a Friday night!

Local 188 is satisfying. If Portland were not filled with so many great restaurants, you could be perfectly happy dining here. But with superior choices within walking distance (Petite Jacqueline, Boda, Caiola's), it's difficult to say "go here." The white sangria was relatively boring, It's such a treat to see deviled eggs on a menu, yet they were bland. The strip steak was gristly, which was disappointing, but other items, the risotto, the meatballs, the fried potatoes were good, but not remarkably good. The service was delightful--our server was well informed and engaging. The atmosphere is casual, if a little dowdy, but not in a bad way. (Similar to Boda.) The food was okay, and not overpriced. I'd go back--but not for a while.

We were with a group of 5, 3 people from out of town. We, the locals, felt we had picked a great spot to show off a lot of good things about Maine. Inviting setting, delightful wait staff, inventive menu, great food. The steak tartar with quail egg was good, but the truffle oil seemed to get in the way of the fresh taste of the rest of the dish. Goat cheese salad was oddly the best part of the meal, the Goat cheese was sort of smeared on the plate, warm, under the salad (I know it sounds goofy, but it was really tasty). Three of us had the special Blue Fish, very tasty, nicely plated, correctly seasoned. We'll be back.

We loved everything about Local 188 and will definitely go there again whenever we're back in Portland! Our food was delicious, the staff was friendly and welcoming, and the service was excellent. We loved not being rushed to order and the time between ordering and the food arriving was perfect. Unlike many restaurants, we did not feel like we were being hurried through our meal. It was a wonderful evening.

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner here Saturday night. The waitstaff was was wonderful, very knowledgeable about the food and just the right amount of attention. We split an appetizer, salad and entree which was just the right amount of food for us. We started with the chicken pinchos, which were very good but could have benefited from marinating a little longer. Next came a wonderful salad with goat cheese and a deliciously light dressing. The entree was a special for the night of halibut that knocked our socks off. Easily one of the best halibut dishes we have had. This is a wonderful restaurant with a great atmosphere. They are even pet friendly, but you don't want to miss the nice vibe inside.

The food here exceeded our expectations! We started with a few tapas - marinated feta, anchovies, and the chicken. Everything was awesome. We then ordered the classic paella to share - it was absolutely delicious! Oh, and we can't forget about the picture of red sangria. Keep doing what you're doing; this is a great place.

Local 188 is always busy for good reason. The changing tapas menu is interesting. I took an out-of-town friend for dinner on a Saturday night. One of the reasons I go to Local 188 regularly is they make a great Manhattan, one of the best in Portland. My friend drank wonderful Ishmael beer from local microbrew Rising Tide. Fresh bread came in olive-oil dipped chunks and was tasty. I had a salad with local greens and cheese, then small plates of meatballs and of roasted potato bites with a dipping sauce. My friend had a whitefish entree with local vegetables and rice, which she loved. We finished by sharing a combination of peach and cantaloupe sorbets with fresh raspberries. The service was easy and friendly.

The decor is really welcoming, but the acoustics make it hard to hear the person sitting across from you if the place is full and busy. We had the ceviche to start and it was good, but it was considerably small it looked like garnish on the plate. The winner of the evening was the mushroom risotto. EXCELLENT. That dish really shined. We also ordered the seafood paella. It was not good, the clams and muscles were super sandy and the dish in general had very little flavor. Our server was more than accommodating and took it off the final bill. The sangria was just ok. It needed some more fruit flavors, it was a bit too sharp. But we did enjoy ourselves.

We started with the deviled eggs. Nice flavors. I had the strip steak and my husband had the tomato salad and hanger steak. My steak was awesome...tender and flavorful. It was served with baby pototoes and fresh green beans. Everything was very fresh. They have a way with seasonings! It is one of our favorites that we find ourselves going back to time and again. It is casual and the staff is fun.

We selected this restaurant as something new (to us) and as a place that would suit our schedule (events later in the evening). In that regard, we made a good choice. Service was quick, friendly, and helpful. Free parking in the back was a plus. It has an excellent wine and beer selection. Focusing on the tapas was a way to eat without being rushed or leaving sated. The tapas were good; everyone enjoyed them, but none stood out as exceptional. The house salad was disappointment - dry with no dressing. The dessert portion had mixed results. Flan: tasteless; chocolate special: a real treat.

My companion and I began with chili-garlic shrimp and the Spanish tortilla. The shrimp were tender, buttery goodness! The tortilla was delicious, as well. However, I would describe it more as a Spanish quiche. It was delightful! For an entree, we shared the seafood paella. This was the most savory, mouth-watering dish that I've had in a long time! I recently had the house paella at another local restaurant, that had come highly recommended. It was definitely good, but Local's version blew it out of the water! The portion was enough for two, and the flavor was unprecedented. Dessert consisted of the flan and a chili-dark chocolate torte. Outstanding! As for the service, all of the employees we encountered were super friendly and helpful.

got a great window seat on a beautiful evening in Maine. We both ordered tapas as appetizers (meatballs and stuffed eggs) Both were yummy. I had the local pollack dish with blue potato hash and greens. It was very tasty. My husband had the steak and salad. We both raved about the herbs and seasonings that seemed to make simple dishes spectacular! I would recommend it to anyone and we will definately return.....hopefully, very soon.

The food at Local 188 is consistently great. Starter of locally harvested mushrooms was divine, the amuse bouche a crisp, fresh surprise, the risotto perfectly cooked and savory. The noise level is often not for the faint of heart on a weekend night but we tucked into a corner of the bar area and blocked some of the dining room noise. Wait staff is always friendly and helpful and easy going.

The food was pretty good, although a little more 'frou frou' and less hearty than I was hoping for. The appetizers were especially small, so I'd order a few if folks want to share. The flavors of some things were just ok (spanish tortilla, pickled veggies). However my seafood paella was delicious and full of various seafood, the goat cheese salad was wonderful, and everyone liked their entrees (tuna steak and veggie pasta). The desserts were even better; we had the chocolate brownie w/ caramel ice cream, and the flan-like pudding. YUM. The Maine honey mead was a nice inclusion on the drink menu.

My mother and I plus our spouses dined here on Mother's Day. The food was incredibly flavorful and fresh. I ordered the classic Paella and it was the best paella I have ever eaten. The atmosphere was lively as folks wandered in, music palyed but it wasn't too loud and the lighting was perfect. It was great to look at the beautiful art on the walls. On our way out we saw one of the chefs taking a break out back in the parking lot. As we went to get in our car he asked us if we enjoyed our food and experience. The food was great, but overall I would have to say the service was the best I've had in a long time dining anywhere. The servers were prompt and polite and the chef on his break made sure to thank us for dining there when we left.
