A word from Little Nonna's
Little Nonna’s is an Italian-American eatery in Center City’s bustling Midtown Village. Inspired by the “red sauce” family-owned ristorantes of Italian immigrants, Chef Turney offers thoughtful interpretations of homestyle Italian-American dishes with an all-Italian wine list and handcrafted cocktails. The cozy 40-seat restaurant is evocative of an Italian grandmother’s living room, circa 1950, featuring vintage lace in the windows, hanging antique copper pots and an outdoor garden that seats an additional 40 guests.Continued

  • "Marcie and Valerie do it again!! I can't say enough about their establishments and what they have done with that area! Favorite restaurants in the city!!!"

  • "Short seasonal menu, which often means great food, not true in this case the food was outstanding. Outside of or trip to Rome this is the best Italian resturant I have been to!"

  • "We were touring the city for the day and were looking for something that wasn't a commercial chain or huge steakhouse. Little Nonna's fir the bill. We sat in the adorable outdoor space complete with a clothesline if "Nonna's" aprons and had a wonderful meal. The crowd was a mix of ages and types with a boisterous noise level in the petite restaurant located in a charming townhouse. We had the stracciatella which was an outstanding burrara, pasta and the mixed grill which was amazing fresh and flavorful. Portions were on the larger side and we pretty much locked out plates! Loved our evening there!"

  • "This time the food was disappointing. I ordered the meatballs which were overcooked and came much before my friend who also ordered the meatballs. Her were juicy and delicious. It was as though the meatballs put at my place were sitting around and hers were made fresh. My friend who shared with me agreed. Was disappointing."

  • "Everything was super delicious. We sat in the outdoor garden which was fun and very homey."

  • "We loved our meal here. Everything was delicious. Only thing I wish was to have been able to linger there longer over our meal. For a Monday night the place was slammed and we really felt rushed to leave :("

  • "Little Nonna ' s was a delicious, gourmet find! Friendly, fabulous and highly recommended."

  • "We heard about this restaurant from our parents and decided to give it a try. Needless to say, we were not disappointed! The food was excellent, although a little overpriced for the portions. I would not, however, let that stand my way from stopping in at this great restaurant. The Sunday Gravy is excellent!"

  • "Perhaps it's what we ordered, but all the dishes seemed to have the same mouth feel. We are vegetarians, so our options are limited. The arancini are the best I've ever eaten, and I could eat them every day, and the amount of cheese was just right. The portion of straciatelli was too large (it's a very rich dish, and a little goes a long way), and didn't need the addition of an olive garnish, and the bread, while excellent, was grilled in olive oil--more grease. The Caesar salad, although very tasty, was too heavily dressed, but I appreciated that the romaine was dark green. The addition of a few grilled stringbeans (that weren't tender) was puzzling. The gemelli pasta, in comparison, tasted plain and unexciting."

  • "Generally excellent food. The salads were very large, almost too much so. Caesar dressing was not very tasty. Gnocchi were good and not "sinkers' like most in Philly. Portions large with plenty to take home. Polenta and meatballs were excellent. Slow service. Very noisy. Wine prices too high for a neighborhood place. Not the usual "south philly italian."(fortunately) Would return"

  • "Over priced for the portion size you receive. Food tasted good."

  • "First, I would say that the food was of high quality. Both the shaved salad and meatballs/spag. were flavorful dish's at a reasonable cost. The low overall rating reflects the seating. The garden was uncomfortably hot on a moderately warm Friday evening. The addition of a ceiling fan under the hot house like plastic/glass roof would have helped. After moving inside, we were seated at a table next to the doorway leading to the outside garden. This wouldn't have been so bad if the computer station for inputting orders etc wasn't right next to the door. We spent the night getting blasted with heat and knocked about (> 10x) by customers and workers passing by. It was difficult to enjoy the nice food in such an unnerving environment."

  • "Curb appeal of Little Nonna's is outstanding - welcoming and promising. This was our first visit. The fried green tomatoes were magnificent. The serving was so large and so tasty that I ate it all and then had little appetite for my entrée. I took over half of it home. Maybe the tomatoes were intended as an entrée? If so, the server should have pointed that out. Our food was delicious, the tomato sauce outstanding; but the servings are enormous. I didn't see an option for half servings -- that would be a good idea. Regular coffee only, no espresso -- how can that be? The noise level was way above my preference. I use a cane and cannot climb steps. Nonna's is easy to navigate even though it is quite crowded."

  • "The food and service was abstained good old country Italian food. Just like nonna used to make back in the good old days. There's nothing commercialized about Nonna's it's all home cooking. I love this place and will visit again"

  • "The food was so good all four of us ate as if we had been on bread and water for a week. The servers were knowledgable and extremely pleasant. It has become our "go to" destination for dinner."

  • "LN's has been talked about in high regard. Often times one's expectations based on the hype somewhat spoils the experience. LN was great from top to bottom- not pretentious, warm, good pace of the food coming out and excellent food. Of particular high note was the eggplant app which had a crunchy outside."

  • "This place was fantastic from top to bottom. The quality of the food was incredible...certainly lived up to the hype for classic family style Italian. The "Sunday Gravy" was exactly how my grandmother would have made it. The appetizers were well portioned, and though small, the menu had just what you'd want in an Italian restaurant. When I first walked in I thought the seating options only consisted of the small indoor area but I was thrilled to find out about the much larger (almost twice the size of the inside) covered back area. It was very quaint and a touch romantic. I will certainly be going back and bringing out of town guests whenever possible. Only downside is it's not BYO, that would really set it apart for me."

  • "My 20-something daughter and I both loved the restaurant. Impressed by the generous quantities in our pasta dishes; she had a seafood pasta and I had the BVP meatballs over spaghetti. My sauce was slightly more salty than I would prefer, but I still really enjoyed it. The brocolli rabe and white bean dish was fantastic. Service was friendly and attentive. Go there!"

  • "There are so many Italian restaurants but this place by far is al fresco dining. Fresh, flavorful and reminiscent of dining in Italy. My only critic was with respect to the cannoli. It had nutella and the feeling tasting nothing like a cannoli feeling. Very misleading. We barely ate it. Change the name to something else as we expected marscapone or ricotta and it was very cocoa flavor and like buttercream cake icing."

  • "I had been wanting to go here but it is difficult to get a dinner reservation. I found that they are open for lunch and had a fabulous and relaxing lunch. Food was really great, the atmosphere is nice, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would love to find a time when I can come back for dinner."

  • "I had dined inside before, but this was my first time in the garden. Amazing. Even on a blisteringly hot night. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Great space - we had a birthday dinner in the garden, which was covered, but still provided an atmosphere of intimacy. The food was great too, serving up classic, casual Italian. The price point is about right for a more upscale restaurant in the area. Marcie and Valerie have really done great work turning Midtown Village into a mini-East Village for Philadelphia. Little Nonna's is great for a small group or special occasion dinner!"

  • "I invited clients who were visiting Philadelphia for the weekend from the Chicago area. It was also my first time dining at Little Nonna's but I took the chance because I've eaten at Lolita's and Barbuzzo's and figured it would be a good gamble. I was right, the atmosphere was cozy yet spacious and the food and service were great. My client's husband ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and loved it so much he asked the waitress to wrap up the leftovers and took it home with him on the plane to Chicago. My client said he has not stopped raving about them. Guess what I will be ordering on my next visit!"

  • "I am huge fan of Marcie and Valerie's restaurants. I have had some of the best meals ever at Barbuzzo and Lolita. I was very exited to try Little Nonna's. Sadly it fell short. Our apps were descent the garlic bread was great, but my entree the linguine and shrimp was extremely bland."

  • "With typically good home - cooked Italian meals it is curious as to why it takes so many weeks advance notice to secure a table at Little Nonna's. The food is quite good, though many places serve similarly good Italian food. The outdoor garden in the Summer is nice. It is in a perfect location, near all the action. The desserts were good too. They do have a limited wine and cocktail list, though beware if you think this is still a B.Y.O.B. because they charge a twenty - five dollar corkage fee . And that's per bottle ."

  • "Food was superb from the mussels to the canolli....can't say enough good things about this place! Service very attentive but not smothering. One more great addition to the Turney/Safran collection of great restaurants."

  • "Authentic Italian comfort food. Feels like you are eating Sunday dinner at your italian grandmother's house. Food and wine were excellent, server seemed uninterested."

  • "We were so happy to find this restaurant! The food was delicious and well-portioned, and the ambience was lovely. Most notably, our waitress was terrific. Knowledgeable, friendly and experienced, she made great recommendations, checked in on us regularly, and made us feel very well taken care of! The prices were very reasonable too, especially for such well-prepared food."

  • "This is at least my third time at Little Nonna's and I'm impressed every time I leave. It's not a huge menu but it's full of delicious choices everyone will love. The pastas are rich and delicious, salads fresh and tasty, and entrees are amazing--the fish grill and brick chicken rock. If it's nice out, you'll enjoy dining in the beautiful garden, especially with a house-made cocktail in hand. Book early--it's small and fills up fast because it's so good."

  • "We sat in the garden, which has cover in case of light rain. Nothing fancy here. Just solid Italian fare made like we remember it from our own Nonna!"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "This restaurant does not compare to the three other restaurants. The menu is limited and uninspiring. The menu and food is on a par with your local Italian restaurants at twice the price. It in no way lives up to it's reviews. The menu and food needs to be re-worked and based on a new concept."
