A word from Little Nonna's
Little Nonna’s is an Italian-American eatery in Center City’s bustling Midtown Village. Inspired by the “red sauce” family-owned ristorantes of Italian immigrants, Chef Turney offers thoughtful interpretations of homestyle Italian-American dishes with an all-Italian wine list and handcrafted cocktails. The cozy 40-seat restaurant is evocative of an Italian grandmother’s living room, circa 1950, featuring vintage lace in the windows, hanging antique copper pots and an outdoor garden that seats an additional 40 guests.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "If I had an Italian grandmother I would hope she could cook like this. In the meantime I will come to Little Nonna's to get my fix."

  • "Long and short, the apps are better than then the entree's and the fact that they charge $2.00 for bread is a ripoff. The Arancini Balls and the straccitella were very good. We ordered their "famous" Sunday Gravy and the Half chicken and macaroni and meatballs for the table. Though pork ragu and that came with the small side of pasta for the SG was dry and overpowered by the taste of the gravy. THe pieces of meat that came with the gravy (Short Rib, sausage and BPV Meatball) were good. The meatball was very good. the others nothing to write home about. Save your money and hit the "less trendy" ask someone from South Philly where to go and they will point you to better."

  • "Really good food for a moderate price. Nice wine selections that do not rip you off. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu."

  • "Have been trying to get in and finally got a decent time for a reservation. Well worth the wait. It was fantastic. Will go back sooner and make reservations well in advance for this find."

  • "We loved the neighborhood vibe. Hubby had Sunday gravy, I had spaghetti and meatballs. He loved his meal, I was less than impressed.. Meatballs seriously overcooked with an almost burned taste. Great service. Bottle of white, delicious and affordable as was the featured antipasti for the evening."

  • "The food at Little Nonna's was outstanding. We started our meal with the fig bruschetta which melted in my mouth. I had the delicious gnocchi and my husband had a calamari special which he loved. We ended by sharing the cherry crumble and coffee. When we sat down, my husband was a little disappointed that he didn't recognize either of the 2 beer offerings. He ordered the Birra Artigianale and he loved it. I had the Italian Lemonade, a house bottled drink with a sprig of thyme. Delicious!"

  • "That's all I ate, so that's all I have to say. Oh wait, the salad was great too!"

  • "I had the gnocchi and really enjoyed my meal. The food was excellent. Everyone at the table also enjoyed the food."

  • "This is a lovely yet small restaurant in the bustling 13 th street corridor. Menu is limited but there are daily specials offered. Everything we are was awesome. Recommend the meatballs and homemade pasta. Skipped dessert and went to the gelato place on 13th"

  • "Little Nonna's was good but not great. Other Marcie Turney restaurants are better. It's very small and dark, in an old-school, Italian way but i found it a little claustrophobic. Our service was adequate, but not great. We waited quite a while for water and menus, but it picked up after that. My partner really enjoyed her pasta dish but I was underwhelmed by my seafood dish. The swordfish spiedini was very good, but the shrimp were mushy and unpalatable. I'd rather go to Barbuzzo."

  • "I was so excited to bring my girlfriends here and I had been craving Sunday Gravy since dining here with my husband. I made this reservation 5 weeks in advance. They tack on a chair on the end of a four top in the middle of the garden entrance and the server station. We got attitude from our server from the minute we were seated. Maybe it is because they have automatic gratuity for parties of 5+ (which she didn't mention at any point, we almost paid her tip twice). I'm not sure if she was just having a bad day or whatever but I will never take people there again. Such a shame."

  • "The food is wonderful - it was my second visit. Portions are not large but tastefully presented and very good. It is just too loud as tables are very close and there seems no way to reduce the noise."

  • "Like being in my grandma's kitchen. Yum. Love the ambience and food is delish. Not a huge menu but honestly you don't need it. I went with the spaghetti and meatballs and it was fantastic. My husband had the gravy as they call it--took leftovers home and it was even better! Go here!"

  • "I was a little nervous about the food as we walked in and looked at the menu but it was amazing. I would highly recommend."

  • "My husband and I loved our dinner at Little Nonnas. The only minor complaint was that the back patio, however charming, is a bit stuffy with no air movement. You may want to be able to open the roof or install a ceiling fan in the middle. The food was wonderful. We started with the wild mushroom risotto balls . . . . . . bites of heaven! We also shared a Caesar salad . .. marvelous! I had the Sunday Dinner and it was so huge that I brought back half and had it for lunch the next day. My husband had the orrechiette with broccoli rabe. He enjoyed it, but he would probably order something different next time. We will definitely be back!"

  • "This was truly a memorable lunch. I had the Chicken and Pepperoni Parmesan sandwich with salad and my wife had Spaghetti and Meatballs. Both came in huge portions of perfectly prepared food. The sauce was heavenly!"

  • "I've been here twice and I had a wonderful experience both times. Garlic bread is amazing and the desserts I've had (tiramisu, blood orange sorbet) have been fantastic. Second time around our server was a little slow but she was very attentive when she was available. Otherwise its a wonderful place to go and I suggest going with a group no greater than 4-6."

  • "Tables for two so close together you're dining elbow to elbow with strangers. We were early, so scored the window seat, which gives a nice view of Locust Street's of and ten interesting foot traffic and doesn't make you feel hemmed in. We would have preferred cocktails from a bar, rather than bottled, but that's our idiosyncrasy. It's a nice enough place, just not our personal style."

  • "Husband and I went last Friday and ate in the outdoor courtyard - it was a lovely evening, no humidity and about 80 degrees. Nonna's "laundry " is hanging from clothesline and it's a cute space. The antipasto plate (chef selects the items so it may be different each time) was delicious! Salami, capicola, proscuitto, cheese . Also the garlic bread is to die for! Definitely get the bread. Hubby had the seafood plate and said it was great. I got the spaghetti and meatballs and like a prior reviewer remarked, it did have a slight burnt taste to it. I think they deep fry the meatballs - they had a crusty outside and tender inside (with the surprise cheese inside) and were okay, but I wasn't a fan of the burnt, smoky taste of the pasta."

  • "I was looking forward to this newish restaurant by the girls and it did not disappoint. Very flavorful and fresh combos with fresh herb use the main draw to even drinks! I loved the combo of fresh thyme in my spiked (fresh)lemonade and the blood orange water ice with basil, wow. We had a great server who was friendly, accesable and very knowledgeable. Horray for another winner. If I had one complaint and it is with restaurants, these days in general,it is the season for fresh fruit!!!!! use it and lighten up on the desserts after a heavish meal."

  • "1st time diners and it was beyond amazing! Minus the fact they set us up in the outdoor seating in the alley section ( kind of awkward ) Will be back :)"

  • "I came here for lunch on my birthday. I was not disapointed! I had arancini' croquet and rigatoni with meat sauce. Amazing! Friends had roast pork sandwich! Delicious! Another had eggplant parmesan. All excellent!"

  • "Great food but air con too aggressive the night we dined. Waitron was unhelpful when we complained."

  • "The help definitely aims to please. The food is fine, though I thought my swordfish was far too salty. The plate was quickly redone when I complained."

  • "I used the opportunity of my brother's anniversary to celebrate with his family at Little Nonna's. We were all impressed with the quality of the food and the size of the portions. Each of us really enjoyed our selections and we all did our fair share of sampling each other's choices. Marcie Turney continues to delight!"

  • "The outdoor dining was not what we expected - it is covered, so extremely hot in temperature in the summer. We were there after 9pm and still uncomfortably hot. The waitress (she was very nice) commented about the set up being hot and very hot for lunch. I expected it to be a bit more charming with the award for best outdoor dining. For this reason, I would opt to eat inside. The food was good - not outstanding. We were told that the portions were "huge" so opted for sharing, but were normal sized. Be sure and ask how things are served, as not always traditional Italian - the mussels appetizer was served in a sauce with vegetables, corn, etc. The appetizer meatballs were excellent - even though bit "burnt" but the taste was perfect."

  • "We were seated about 15 minutes late for our 8:30 reservation on Saturday night which was ok, since we chose to wait for garden seats, which we'd highly recommend. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, if a little long between visits. Food was as described and pretty delicious all around. The one major disappointment with the experience was that 2 of the dishes we tried to order were sold out. It seemed a misfire to have sellouts so early on Saturday night. Overall we'd recommend it, and would probably go back, but would hope that all dishes would be available next time."

  • "Could not have been happier that I stumbled upon this quaint, tucked away gem. From start to finish, the gastonomous delicacies prepared at Little Nonna's are easily among the best in the City. The entire staff were incredibly knowledgable, attentive and happy to share their own opinions. Could not give a better review."

  • "Was really excited to try this place. had excellent reviews. We requested outdoor seating in their garden. It was not a particularly hot night but the garden is covered and there was no air moving. I suggest they put in a fan. It was much too still to be comfortable. Tried their Sunday gravy and it seems like it was cooked too long. The meat was dry even though in was in the sauce. Basically disappointed."

  • "The food was outstanding, bringing back memories of family meals cooked by my Nonna. I had the Sunday gravy (sauce) over homemade pasta with local Italian sausage. Everything, including the service was wonderful. We sat on the patio which was a bit noisy, but that would be the only thing we would change."

  • "We enjoyed the outside dining (it is not inside the building but it is under a plexiglass roof) August 7th. The food was quite good. The server was solicitous without being overly so. We were initially seated at a "picnic table" with bench seating but moved to a table when one was available. Nice table, in a corner, looking out over the patio seating. Seating is approximately 25 - 30 people. Wine choice was good. The cocktails we had were excellent albeit quite small. Tables are a bit close. The next table happened to be non-stop loud talking very self important set but that can happen to you anywhere."

  • "Wonderful food- everyone loved their dishes. Sat outside. Great vibe but very hot and loud. Difficult to have a conversation. Would recommend and would definitely go back. Great italian food."

  • "Had a very nice dinner. Prices are reasonable and food was good. Steamed mussels app was great, BVP app was a bit bland. Orecchietti was awesome but the sauce on Nonni's spaghetti & meatballs was a little Burned and very acidic. Maybe our expectation was too high?"

  • "The restaurant is well situated if you are going to a concert or a show in town. My dinner was good, but apparently the meatballs in the spaghetti and meatball main course were very dry (three of my companions order them). I had the chicken and it was well good."

  • "A friend and I dined here with no expectations. We shared the eggplant parm appetizer which was yummy, but nothing to go over board about. We both ordered the swordfish and loved it so much we could have licked the plate! I will be back for it because it was such a unique dish with so much flavor - memorable! Nice, engaging waiter. We wanted to sit outside, but the first come, first served got there first - we sat by the window which was very nice. I would return."
