A word from Little Bird
Little Bird, the bistro by the team behind Le Pigeon, is open from 11:30 to midnight during the week, and from 5 to midnight on the weekends. The food and ambiance are inspired by the bistros of Paris, but are Portland at heart. Little Bird features a great bar, and a large selection of wines with a focus on French, as well as a selection of local options.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We have eaten at Little Bird a number of times. This dinner was up to the quality that we have come to expect in terms of food, service, and ambience. "

  • "The ambiance from the street is compelling, hence my desire to dine here. But don’t expect a spontaneous table, prime dining hours are reserved months in advance, even my 5:30 reservation made four weeks prior lent me a table upstairs, out of the anticipated fore, Kinda like being stuck in the bleachers. The menu is fairly complex gourmet French, expect lots of butter an animal fat calories. Charcuterie tray was beautiful and unique. Salads the same. My Grouper was ok, I’ve had better. Wife’s pork was good, Friends short ribs were good,I guess the gist of it was that it was good. Not outstanding. Wait staff efficient, but a little cold...overworked? Wine list is quite good. Lots of great stuff that won’t set you back an arm and a duck leg."

  • "The food just keeps getting better - wonderful preparations, creative and tasty. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Tables are too close together and the sound is orders of magnitude too much. If you can get past those, this is a good restaurant with well made food in the modern Portland style. We visit one or two new (to us) restaurants a year where the ambient noise is so piercing and discomforting that the food and conversation are much less enjoyable. I had a hard time focusing on the food and my companion because of the din. As with those one or two others I won't be back. There are many places in Portland with excellent food and comfortable surroundings too..."

  • "From the moment you walk through the door you know you're in for a treat. I went with my fiancé to celebrate him getting in/going to business school. The waitress was so nice and helpful as she just wanted to answer any questions we had. We had oysters, gnocchi, short ribs, and pork shoulder. Every bite was amazing! We both wanted to lick our plates clean. It's a pretty expensive but worth it if it's a special occasion or you are craving some amazing french food. YUM!"

  • "Everything was just perfect. It was my birthday to went there and we both loved it."

  • "Came here for an intimate birthday dinner for two, and Little Bird Bistro did not disappointment. Excellent and creative cocktails, extensive wine list, and very delicious options for the dinner meal. I chose the moules-frites from the appetizer selections (fit for an entree!) and my boyfriend took the short ribs, which were excellently cooked and full of flavor. I chose the La Vie en Rose for the cocktail and, while more fitting for a summertime patio, it was well balanced and fully enjoyed. Definitely recommend this place."

  • "There is only good things to say, service was attentive but not intrusive The servers were happy and inviting. Food was excellent and generous portions Have recommended it already to family. Would definitely return. Short ribs were tender and could cut with a fork!"

  • "The best part was the cocktail, called "Helice". Delicious and very imaginative. We had the cod special. It was okay; the cod was nicely done and not overcooked. But the dish was not as interesting as it sounded from the description. The filled crepe under the cod tasted like just mashed potatoes. I was expecting a French restaurant. I think my expectations were too high."
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "I had the chicken fried trout. The plate was a mess. The fish did not hold up well to the technique. Many bones and fins were left on the fish to discover after you had taken a bite. The other seafood entree was drenched with paprika. The best things we had were the items off the chalkboard, the oysters and the cheese plate."

  • "Great food, great service! Will be back and I will remember to get a reservation far in advance as I now know why we could not get in when we first called. A gem in Portland!"
    Dined on 3/31/2014
  • "This was my third time theire. The presentation of the trout was wonderful as was the taste. We had the mussels & fries as well as thr clams with potatoe dumplings. All was first class."

  • "We heard the burgers were outstanding, so we had to try them. Too goat-y for the spouse, so he was not so enamoured with it. We did the Portland dining menu for the other orders with mixed results. The radicchio salad with pears and hazelnuts was best. The salt cod gnocci not so much. We split on the entrees too, with the trout interesting, but too difficult to enjoy (2 out of 3 got a bone in our trout wrap), The pork shoulder entree was good, and the potato salad with lardons was well liked. We were 2/3 on desserts too, but I'm picky about desserts (mango-ginger ice cream was too gingery for me). We'd still go back and try other things. It was a cool interior, and the bar looked interesting if we happened to be in the neighborhood."

  • "I LOVED Little Bird. I had the salt cod gnocchi to start and it was delicious and perfectly balanced out with little manilla clams and some tomatoes. But my main - the chicken fried trout - was AMAZING. So delicious, it was among the best meals I have ever eaten. Round this out with a great wine list and perfect service and I give Little Bird two thumbs up without hesitation. AND it didn't break the bank. Perfection!"

  • "Both Birds - Little Bird and Le Pigeon - always provide great service, food and ambience. I always look forward to dining there and have never been disappointed."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Again, music and noise level unacceptable for a fine dining choice. Only Piaf should be the little bird singing for the patrons. The french fried trout looked more like a failed lab experiment and the pork dish was mainly fat with only a speck of speck."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "I love the bistro atmosphere too. The service is great. It's nice to go to a restaurant where there's no rush - you actually have to ask for the bill. My only problem with Little Bird is that the accustics make it very difficult to have a conversation. We asked the server to turn the music down but even so it was still too loud to hear across the table. Noise is always an issue there but I still love the restaurant and keep going back."

  • "two of us liked our meals a lot, two thought the food not up to expectations. wine list somewhat limited and they did not have our first choice. would be willing to go back before forming a final opinion"

  • "We tried the $29 March Dine Out menu. our party of 4 were all impressed by the food. Each course was unique a litttle edgy and and outstanding. We all decided we would return and also recommend it to friends. The deep fried trout was so moist and flavorful.n - it was a "10"."

  • "Based on the reviews, I expected to have an amazing dinner. Service was lacking. In fact the table beside us had to ask for plates and the server told them they didn't need one. A homeless man came inside the restaurant and held up a sign. Our waitress never came back after we got the food to ask how good was. Manager was rude. Food was disappointing and not inspired. Won't be back."

  • "We have heard from a lot of people that this place is amazing, so when I saw that they had a menu for Portland Dining Month, I jumped at the chance to go. It did not disappoint! The atmosphere was casual, yet elegant. The service was up to par with any fine dining experience. The food was incredible! The special menu had 2 choices for each course, so we just got 1 of everything and shared. Afterward, we couldn't decide who ordered the better dish because they were all so good! We plan on going back again and again."

  • "My friend and I treat ourselves each year during Open Table month to go to a different restaurant. This year's choice was Little Bird. I think food-wise it is a favorite so far. The tables are a bit too close to each other for my taste, but the food made up for that little issue. The wait staff was knowledgeable, but seemed a bit stressed. It was a Wednesday night, not a weekend, so that was a little disturbing as well. Again, the food was so good, I can overlook that too."

  • "My wife and I dined here and ordered off the March Portland Restaurant Month menu. You are immediately drawn into a very intimate space. Our sever and the in house wine expert steered us to wonderful French Burgundy which went great with both the trout and the pork shoulder. Both of these items are on the regular menu. I would recommend the almond cake for dessert. LB is a gem in an otherwise dull neighborhood."

  • "It was to be a luncheon filled with extraordinary cuisine and charming ambience, unfortunately it was mediocre food, too salty but exceptional service. In light of the steep price tag for the less than what we expected, not sure to make a return visit. $45 for two without alcohol and the food so so, girlfriend said this is a No No next time."
    Dined on 3/17/2014
  • "Good bread with salted butter. Flavorful salad. The gnochi with clams was spicy and good. One entree was the deep fried fish - it was crispy, fried, a bit salty. The other entree was the pork shoulder - that was tender but a bit too salty for my taste. Almond Tort with cream and bing cherries dessert is ok, nothing spectacular - they need to work on improving desserts itself, it's presentation and larger portion. If you're into desserts, get it elsewhere."

  • "Knowledgeable, attentive waiter with a great attitude, food ranged from excellent (salad and gnocchi starters, fish special) to mediocre desserts. Overall good fun, very nice place. Next morning though, diarhhea for both my husband and I..."

  • "Great all around. I visited some nice restaurants over the week but this was the tops for me."

  • "I have eaten here a number of times and the food is always excellent. Two of our party ordered the Chicken Fried Trout and the presentation was lovely but it was so overfried it was like eating charcoal. There wasn't any actual fish left that hadn't been nuked to a charred rock. (Part of the Portland Dining Month menu)."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "My friend and I decided to take advantage of Portland Dining Month at Little Bird. We split the charcuterie board that was decadently exquisite without being too rich. The variety of pâtés played off each other and the cornichons, spiced apples added another dimension both in flavor and texture. My friend enjoyed the frisée salad; I dove into the radicchio salad with blue cheese from the prix fixe menu. The rest of the courses we shared from the prix fixe: a generous, flavorful pork shoulder and a light, delicate almond torte resembling a miniature cupcake served with a swoosh of blueberry sauce! We sat upstairs where the tables are not so close and observed the lively scene below. Service was friendly and efficient. What an experience!"

  • "I suggested to a couple of friends that we venture out and try a restaurant we hadn't been to during the Portland Dining Month. Little Bird exceeded our expectations big time! All three of us had the Radicchio salad and the trout. They were absolutely fabulous! We all three thought that it was right up there with the best dining experiences ever!"

  • "We went for the $29 tasting menu. The gnocchi appetizer was great. Both the pork shoulder and the trout were very tasty entrees. The only thing which might have improved the night would have been if there were one more choice of entree. We opted for their wine pairing with each course, and they were well matched."

  • "We had the Portland Dining Month special menu. It was a bargain and the portions were large. Ambience suffered from the proximity of fellow diners. The overall experience was exceptional."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Our group had a fantastic dinner. The new york strip and casoulet were big hits and the charcuterie board was amazing. our wine was very good, but be ready to spend a little more than you're used to."

  • "I ordered off the Portland Dining Month menu. I ordered the salted cod gnocchi. It was good, but it was a bit salty when paired with green olives. The clams in it weren't sweet either. Next, I ordered the chicken-fried trout. The presentation was impressive with the entire fish presented in front of you topped with thinly sliced radishes and fresh dill. They also provide fresh butter lettuce leaves for your to wrap the succulent fish meat. The server was extremely attentive and provided great service. He came by to make sure that we were well-taken care of without overdoing it. However, it did take almost 20 minutes before the almond torte came out. I didn't care for the texture of the torte. It's an enjoyable place. I would come back."

  • "This was a first visit to Little Bird. I selected it for dinner because the word-of-mouth and newspaper reviews were so impressive. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu explaining each dish, the wines, and desserts. My friend had the charcuterie platter and I had the famous burger; neither dish disappointed. My friend, a gourmet cook, said the charcuterie exceeded her expectations with such an interesting variety of cheeses, pates, and flavors. She enjoyed every bite. Burgers are not the norm for French restaurants, but mine was delicious and unique, fulfilling its reputation; my only criticism is that it was hard to eat it "neatly.""

  • "The food was inventive, well presented, and very tasty. A great place to take your friends who think they've eaten at all the superior places in town."

  • "Little Bird was everything that I was hoping for. I was with two other people so we ordered a decent amount of food. Started with the cheese which came with Goat, Cow and Sheep style cheeses, Hazelnut Crackers and Apple Butter. Next up was the Escargot with Tagliatelle Pasta and the Bone Marrow. I preferred the Tagliatelle for the flavors and the Escargot surprised me with how un-chewy it was. The Bone Marrow, my companions loved but I didn't care for. Was a little chilled leaving a layer of fat coating in the mouth. Next we got the Pan Fried Trout which came with the most delicious Gribiche sauce I have ever tasted. If you haven't had this get it. Last we got the Lobster Stuffed Chicken. Flavor was great but it was too salty."

  • "We decided it was time to leave the kidlets at home and check in with one another over a nice meal. Little Bird proved to be the perfect place: not too loud, dim lighting, lovely wine and delicious food with plenty to choose from. We connected over cassoulet and went home satisfied and happy. Great service and a smooth ambience, definitely worth checking out."
