A word from Lion and Compass
For over a quarter of a century, the Lion & Compass has maintained a special status in the Silicon Valley. Opening in 1982, the Lion & Compass quickly established its reputation as the premiere business dining restaurant for the high-tec cognescenti. Combining sophisticated urban cuisine with a tropical English environment, a New York Times article from the 1980's noted, "the Lion & Compass is to the Silicon Valley what Sardi's was to the theater district."

From business dining and banquets, private corporate events, wedding receptions, to a fine dining experience for two, the Lion & Compass is a culinary oasis in the Silicon Valley.

Diner Reviews
  • "The waiter made the experience very pleasant. The staff was very attentive and accomodating. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was good."

  • "Food was just average. Services were just like a late night diner, not a restaurant. The person forgot our order, interrupted our conversation multiple time, mistaken the special menu, etc."

  • "Took a new business colleague to lunch and she adored the spot! Service was impeccable...summer salad loaded with prawns, papaya and other goodies was perfect. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Have been coming here for over 20 years...it doesn't change! And I like that! Had the macadamia nut encrusted sea bass...everyone loved it...Want to go more often, but...I like a lot of places!"

  • "The food was very good, and everyone at the table enjoyed it. The host was very polite, and promptly took us to our table. The server, however, was very curt, borderline rude, and pretty inattentive. When my boss asked if he could switch the salad that came with his entree for a soup, he was told categorically that he couldn't. There was no offer of adding it for an extra amount, nor was he asked if he wanted to get the soup anyway. The server actually said "No, you can't do that." Furthermore, I asked for hot water for my tea several times, and it wasn't brought until after we got the check at the end of the meal. I would go back there again, but was disappointed in the service."

  • "The food, services, and ambience - all of the above are pretty good. It is a great place for business lunch."

  • "Went for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the ambience and good service. We were right on lunch time and the service became little slower when it became busy at 1230pm but our waiter kept us in touch and made sure we are not left out. Ordered the Vegetable lasagna and it was excellent. Did not have time to taste their coffee but left it to try it another day and time"

  • "We arrived late in the evening, the restaurant was empty. In the entire evening we feeled rushed to order and finish my plate. The waiter was not pleasant at all (difficulty to understand him and was not making my experience different). I did take the sashimi tuna as entré (the tuna was fresh, but did not taste anything) and i've taste the salmon as main dish and that was delicious. Did not take the desert since the service was always pushy. "

  • "Lovely dining room, the food was great and we had a wonderful waitress"

  • "Lion and Compass was recommended to me by a date since it was so close to my office. Its kind of hidden on the back streets, yet was better than expected. She had the rack of lamb (loved it) and I had the Tilapia and it was made just right. I would highly recommend.....especially on a Friday night since it was very quiet."

  • "It was great! We have come here as a team on several occasions and it is good food. Just be prepared our bill came to $200 for a group of 5 and there was no appetizers or alcohol. "

  • "I've been going to Lion and Compass for 30 years. The quality is good, and its consistent. A bit noisy when it's busy, but otherwise always pleasant."
    Dined on 4/23/2014
  • "We've been dining here fit for almost 20 yrs . We like the food because it's consistent but have not come for a year or so because we have found the wait staff less than friendly or welcoming. On our last visit our waitress was perfunctory in service and managed to stuff our leftovers SIDEWAYS in their paper bag so we got a leaky mess in our fridge. It's the indifferent attitude that has kept us away and sadly will continue to do till they have more soliticious wait staff."

  • "The Lion and Compass used to be the happening place in Silicon Valley. It's gone sadly downhill. Although the room is still airy and beautiful and there's a valet to park your car, the food and service are sadly lacking. Broken wine and water glasses were just the start. Service is spotty. Although still populated by some of the movers and shakers at lunch, it's basically deserted. At least you can hear yourself speak."

  • "We were a group of 10 people for lunch. The service was prompt and attentive. The lunch, either steak or sea food, was excellent. Deserts were delicious too."
    Dined on 4/16/2014
  • "The food is delicious and varied, but pricey, and the portions can be inadequate for a normal to large guy. (Portions vary in size significantly on the lunch menu.) Normally the service is excellent, but this time we went with a big party and were almost ignored by the waitress (who had a the tip built in.)"

  • "I often have business lunch meetings here because the food is great, the service staff is attentive but not overbearing, and the noise level allows for private conversations. Love the natural lighting in the place as well. Overall great place! Also convenient "mid-way" dining location on the peninsula."

  • "I had such an amazing time at this restaurant. Treated like a Queen from the minute I stepped in the door. I will definitely dine here again."

  • "The food was really good. Venison stir fry was really unique and portions were plenty for leftovers. The salads were also great: I had the prosciutto-melon with arrugula, my husband had the pear-mizuna. The bread was just the way I like it--chewy crust, good texture and flavor. The noise level was quiet, which I was very happy about. Some reviewers said it was "lively"--noisy--so I was a little worried. It may depend on when you go. Ambience is great-- they have old Welsh-looking dragon iron lights in the main dining room and a "library room" with built in shelves and stained glass for larger parties. The bar is a whole separate room. Overall , we enjoyed the evening and plan to return soon."

  • "I do have to say, parking was hard to find, we ended up across the street due to no parking available in the lot and no valet. Once inside the restaurant, it was beautiful and great service. The meal was delicious except the filet was was to peppery for our taste. The seabass was probably the best I have had. Overall nice dinner and would recommend it."

  • "Away from the crowded Silicon Valley restaurants and crowds. This is great for business lunch. The downside is their lunch menu. It is always the same for the past months."

  • "I love to take visitors to Sunnyvale to this restaurant - never disappointed"

  • "Went there as it was convenient to come from the airport . too many other better places though for that price point .. Ambience and food."

  • "Should eat here more often as it can be counted to provide a very well done meal, presented well with very good service. Had an early reservation due to a later commitment so the noise level was pretty low. Can get a bit noisy during high volume times."

  • "I have been going here for years, always the best food, best Sea Bass, best steaks, and awesome deserts."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Was not expecting to be impressed by this location. The dinner menu is limited to 8 -10 entrees, however, all were great! The bar was also unexpected, great drinks and service. Great outdoor location for seating. This is a hidden gem in Sunnyvale."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Good food. Well prepared and presented. Overpriced, though. Seating arrangements are barely adequate for lunch, but horrible for a dinner. Diners are crammed together so that conversation is impossible unless you want to talk to the couple seating 12 inches next to you."

  • "Went on Valentines Day before the rush (6pm) place was nearly empty!! I thought the service would be good since there was so much staff ready for the VDay rush. I was wrong. I almost had to waive the waitress down a few times, my gawd it was awful. No kidding there was hardly anyone there and it took like 20 minutes to get my salad. The the food came before I was even done with the salad, not good. The food was excellent and well presented, size was a little on the light side though. I think it's a wee bit pricey too. I think entrees are $5-$10 over priced and the drinks are too pricey too, what should be a $7 drink is $10 - $11. Overall very good but not a WOW. Recommended for sure."

  • "We love this place. The menu is always interesting. Every dish is beautifully prepared and presented. The macadamia crusted seabass is the best I've had anywhere... My favorite entree here. My husband had the salmon, which was perfectly done with little veggies and Peruvian potatoes. The Lavins chocolate torte was the perfect ending to a delicious meal--a little bit dark and not too sweet. M- m- m. We'll definitely be back."

  • "We were getting together with two other couples (family members and their spouses) We needed a nice place for dinner that had a noise level that would allow us to have good conversation. Lion & Compass completely fills the bill! We had a very enjoyable evening. Stayed talking until they closed. Food is definitely above average fare--love the Asian flavors mixed in. As I said in the first paragraph, we were 6 people who had not been together for about 5 yrs, and definitely needed a more quiet place to have good conversation. Thank you, Lion & Compass--you provided EXACTLY what we wanted."

  • "Orders for appetizers ranged from the spicy shrimp to the vegetarian ravioli; excellent and polished off by the party. Entrees ranged from the salmon to the scallops with pasta to steak. Good flavor was the general opinion....And my party of eight would like to come back here next time we are here on a business trip"

  • "The food and service was superb. Lion and Compass is a gem of a dining place. I'll be dining there often and encouraging others to dine there as well."

  • "Lion and Compass is always a good choice for a business lunch or dinner. The food is good - not outstanding - but good. Need to expand the beer selection to include more craft beers. The service is always friendly and efficient and it was again this past week when I dined there. It is very convenient - right off 101 which again makes it great for a quick business meal. The interior could use some updating but it continues to be a location that I patronize and recommend to others."

  • "This is one of my favorite lunch spots. The ambiance is great and the food never dissapoints. The noise level is moderate so having a business discussion is very possible."

  • "Lion and Compass is a great restaurant for business lunches - it isn't too noisy and has tables which are more private. Service is fairly consistent (in a good way) and the menu selection is good, but not extensive. It make a nice impression. They also have a full bar."
