A word from Lion and Compass
For over a quarter of a century, the Lion & Compass has maintained a special status in the Silicon Valley. Opening in 1982, the Lion & Compass quickly established its reputation as the premiere business dining restaurant for the high-tec cognescenti. Combining sophisticated urban cuisine with a tropical English environment, a New York Times article from the 1980's noted, "the Lion & Compass is to the Silicon Valley what Sardi's was to the theater district."

  • "The food is delicious and varied, but pricey, and the portions can be inadequate for a normal to large guy. (Portions vary in size significantly on the lunch menu.) Normally the service is excellent, but this time we went with a big party and were almost ignored by the waitress (who had a the tip built in.)"

Love the natural lighting in the place as well. Overall great place! Also convenient "mid-way" dining location on the peninsula."

  • "The food was really good. Venison stir fry was really unique and portions were plenty for leftovers. The salads were also great: I had the prosciutto-melon with arrugula, my husband had the pear-mizuna. The bread was just the way I like it--chewy crust, good texture and flavor. The noise level was quiet, which I was very happy about. Some reviewers said it was "lively"--noisy--so I was a little worried. It may depend on when you go. Ambience is great-- they have old Welsh-looking dragon iron lights in the main dining room and a "library room" with built in shelves and stained glass for larger parties. The bar is a whole separate room. Overall , we enjoyed the evening and plan to return soon."

  • "I do have to say, parking was hard to find, we ended up across the street due to no parking available in the lot and no valet. Once inside the restaurant, it was beautiful and great service. The meal was delicious except the filet was was to peppery for our taste. The seabass was probably the best I have had. Overall nice dinner and would recommend it."

  • "We love this place. The menu is always interesting. Every dish is beautifully prepared and presented. The macadamia crusted seabass is the best I've had anywhere... My favorite entree here. My husband had the salmon, which was perfectly done with little veggies and Peruvian potatoes. The Lavins chocolate torte was the perfect ending to a delicious meal--a little bit dark and not too sweet. M- m- m. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Went on Valentines Day before the rush (6pm) place was nearly empty!! I thought the service would be good since there was so much staff ready for the VDay rush. I was wrong. I almost had to waive the waitress down a few times, my gawd it was awful. No kidding there was hardly anyone there and it took like 20 minutes to get my salad. The the food came before I was even done with the salad, not good. The food was excellent and well presented, size was a little on the light side though. I think it's a wee bit pricey too. I think entrees are $5-$10 over priced and the drinks are too pricey too, what should be a $7 drink is $10 - $11. Overall very good but not a WOW. Recommended for sure."

  • "We were getting together with two other couples (family members and their spouses) We needed a nice place for dinner that had a noise level that would allow us to have good conversation. Lion & Compass completely fills the bill! We had a very enjoyable evening. Stayed talking until they closed. Food is definitely above average fare--love the Asian flavors mixed in. As I said in the first paragraph, we were 6 people who had not been together for about 5 yrs, and definitely needed a more quiet place to have good conversation. Thank you, Lion & Compass--you provided EXACTLY what we wanted."

  • "Orders for appetizers ranged from the spicy shrimp to the vegetarian ravioli; excellent and polished off by the party. Entrees ranged from the salmon to the scallops with pasta to steak. Good flavor was the general opinion....And my party of eight would like to come back here next time we are here on a business trip"

The service is always friendly and efficient and it was again this past week when I dined there. It is very convenient - right off 101 which again makes it great for a quick business meal. The interior could use some updating but it continues to be a location that I patronize and recommend to others."

  • "Our experience at this restaurant was on a Monday night, we had a party of four. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the history of the place as well as the cocktails and menu. Our drinks and appetizers came immediately. However there was at least a 30 minute wait between the appetizers and the entrees arriving. The food was very good but we were long done with our meals and no one had returned to the table. I had to get up and find the waitress who was in another corner of the restaurant talking with another employee. I had to ask for the dessert menus and the check. Both of which then came promptly. The Lion and Compass is a beautiful little restaurant with good food. However the service was disappointing."

  • "In the '70s Compas and Lion was the absolute hottest destination lunch spot around. They would bring a phone to your table and plug it in if you received a phone call at lunch, very cool! Spin forward over 40 years and I found a very comfortable though somewhat more subdued dining experience. Food was great as was the service. The ambience is garden like in the largest open area and outdoor dining options are terrific. I guess you have to pretty much have it all to stay in busines for over 40 years in the heart of Silicon Valley!"

  • "Great for lunch, especially when you want to spend a little more time with friends catching up. Plan on being a little more leisurely than the normal 50 minute rushed lunch. Great for business occasions (birthdays, retirements, etc...) - nice menu, good specials. The drinks menu looks intriguing, but would not indulge during a business lunch...not too noisy, so you can actually have a conversation. Very well-trained wait staff- attentive yet unobtrusive. Try the butterscotch pudding for a comfort food treat!"

  • "A stand alone restaurant consistently providing above par quality food. Ordered 2 delicious appetizers, Tiger Prawn mango salad and Steamed Clams. Grilled seasoned Prawns went well with the crunchy slaw and sweet mango slices. Broth from the steamed clams great to soak up the bread slices. Huband had the Venison in a rich stock sauce with Crispy Rice balls and I had the Seafood Pot in a Coconut Cream sauce. Both entrees delicious and presented well, unable to eat all of entrees after appetizers . Had the Tiramisu and Creme Brulee for desserts. Great way to end a great meal. Without drinks, a three course meal comes to a little over $ 100 for 2. Been here before for special occasions for a good meal."
