A word from Lion and Compass
For over a quarter of a century, the Lion & Compass has maintained a special status in the Silicon Valley. Opening in 1982, the Lion & Compass quickly established its reputation as the premiere business dining restaurant for the high-tec cognescenti. Combining sophisticated urban cuisine with a tropical English environment, a New York Times article from the 1980's noted, "the Lion & Compass is to the Silicon Valley what Sardi's was to the theater district."

From business dining and banquets, private corporate events, wedding receptions, to a fine dining experience for two, the Lion & Compass is a culinary oasis in the Silicon Valley.

Overall I loved the Lion and Compass. I found it when I was pressed for time and had to make a quick dinner reservation. I picked it because of the rating it received. Everything was delicious. Our waiter was attentive, but not overbearing. The food was amazing. However, for the price of our meal I would have preferred a level table. We were put in a spot where two table were pushed together to form a larger one, but one of the tables slanted horribly and every time one of us tried to cut something the table wobbled back and forth precariously sloshing our drinks. It was extremely distracting. This needs to be take care of immediately, as a wobbly table brings the entire atmosphere down.

Lion & Compass is one of my go-to restaurants for business lunches. It's great that they're on the Passport Unlimited program, too. The calamari, which is usually outstanding, was not so great this time around. Will be back though, thanks for lunch :)

  • Good Food, Curt Server

The food was very good, and everyone at the table enjoyed it. The host was very polite, and promptly took us to our table. The server, however, was very curt, borderline rude, and pretty inattentive. When my boss asked if he could switch the salad that came with his entree for a soup, he was told categorically that he couldn't. There was no offer of adding it for an extra amount, nor was he asked if he wanted to get the soup anyway. The server actually said "No, you can't do that." Furthermore, I asked for hot water for my tea several times, and it wasn't brought until after we got the check at the end of the meal. I would go back there again, but was disappointed in the service.

Went for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the ambience and good service. We were right on lunch time and the service became little slower when it became busy at 1230pm but our waiter kept us in touch and made sure we are not left out. Ordered the Vegetable lasagna and it was excellent. Did not have time to taste their coffee but left it to try it another day and time

We arrived late in the evening, the restaurant was empty. In the entire evening we feeled rushed to order and finish my plate. The waiter was not pleasant at all (difficulty to understand him and was not making my experience different). I did take the sashimi tuna as entré (the tuna was fresh, but did not taste anything) and i've taste the salmon as main dish and that was delicious. Did not take the desert since the service was always pushy.

Lion and Compass was recommended to me by a date since it was so close to my office. Its kind of hidden on the back streets, yet was better than expected. She had the rack of lamb (loved it) and I had the Tilapia and it was made just right. I would highly recommend.....especially on a Friday night since it was very quiet.

We've been dining here fit for almost 20 yrs . We like the food because it's consistent but have not come for a year or so because we have found the wait staff less than friendly or welcoming. On our last visit our waitress was perfunctory in service and managed to stuff our leftovers SIDEWAYS in their paper bag so we got a leaky mess in our fridge. It's the indifferent attitude that has kept us away and sadly will continue to do till they have more soliticious wait staff.

The Lion and Compass used to be the happening place in Silicon Valley. It's gone sadly downhill. Although the room is still airy and beautiful and there's a valet to park your car, the food and service are sadly lacking. Broken wine and water glasses were just the start. Service is spotty. Although still populated by some of the movers and shakers at lunch, it's basically deserted. At least you can hear yourself speak.

The food is delicious and varied, but pricey, and the portions can be inadequate for a normal to large guy. (Portions vary in size significantly on the lunch menu.) Normally the service is excellent, but this time we went with a big party and were almost ignored by the waitress (who had a the tip built in.)

I often have business lunch meetings here because the food is great, the service staff is attentive but not overbearing, and the noise level allows for private conversations. Love the natural lighting in the place as well. Overall great place! Also convenient "mid-way" dining location on the peninsula.

The food was really good. Venison stir fry was really unique and portions were plenty for leftovers. The salads were also great: I had the prosciutto-melon with arrugula, my husband had the pear-mizuna. The bread was just the way I like it--chewy crust, good texture and flavor. The noise level was quiet, which I was very happy about. Some reviewers said it was "lively"--noisy--so I was a little worried. It may depend on when you go. Ambience is great-- they have old Welsh-looking dragon iron lights in the main dining room and a "library room" with built in shelves and stained glass for larger parties. The bar is a whole separate room. Overall , we enjoyed the evening and plan to return soon.

I do have to say, parking was hard to find, we ended up across the street due to no parking available in the lot and no valet. Once inside the restaurant, it was beautiful and great service. The meal was delicious except the filet was was to peppery for our taste. The seabass was probably the best I have had. Overall nice dinner and would recommend it.

This restaurant is not downtown, or near a big box retail location. It's off North Fair Oaks in an area you're unlikely to pass when looking for a place to dine. That's a shame because the menu is very good as is the service. The prices are reasonable too. We had a great meal, and looking around the restaurant I saw waiters taking away only empty plates. I would guess everyone was enjoying the food.

Good food. Well prepared and presented. Overpriced, though. Seating arrangements are barely adequate for lunch, but horrible for a dinner. Diners are crammed together so that conversation is impossible unless you want to talk to the couple seating 12 inches next to you.

Went on Valentines Day before the rush (6pm) place was nearly empty!! I thought the service would be good since there was so much staff ready for the VDay rush. I was wrong. I almost had to waive the waitress down a few times, my gawd it was awful. No kidding there was hardly anyone there and it took like 20 minutes to get my salad. The the food came before I was even done with the salad, not good. The food was excellent and well presented, size was a little on the light side though. I think it's a wee bit pricey too. I think entrees are $5-$10 over priced and the drinks are too pricey too, what should be a $7 drink is $10 - $11. Overall very good but not a WOW. Recommended for sure.

We love this place. The menu is always interesting. Every dish is beautifully prepared and presented. The macadamia crusted seabass is the best I've had anywhere... My favorite entree here. My husband had the salmon, which was perfectly done with little veggies and Peruvian potatoes. The Lavins chocolate torte was the perfect ending to a delicious meal--a little bit dark and not too sweet. M- m- m. We'll definitely be back.

We were getting together with two other couples (family members and their spouses) We needed a nice place for dinner that had a noise level that would allow us to have good conversation. Lion & Compass completely fills the bill! We had a very enjoyable evening. Stayed talking until they closed. Food is definitely above average fare--love the Asian flavors mixed in. As I said in the first paragraph, we were 6 people who had not been together for about 5 yrs, and definitely needed a more quiet place to have good conversation. Thank you, Lion & Compass--you provided EXACTLY what we wanted.
