A word from Lineage
A farm to table American restaurant with a focus on seafood. Our menus change daily to reflect the best of what the markets have to offer and allows us to feature the work of many local artisans, growers and fishermen. A three course seafood tasting menu is always available. Jeremy and Lisa Sewall created Lineage Restaurant"s concept. We are a married couple with extensive culinary experience and deep New England roots. Located in the heart of Coolidge Corner, Brookline, Massachusetts, the name "Lineage" is based on Jeremy's own. In 1705, when this "Muddy River" hamlet of Boston became incorporated, Samuel Sewall, son of Judge Sewall of Salem Witch Trials fame, lent the community his services as the first Town Clerk and, it is thought, the name of his family's "Brooklin" lands, which lay between the Charles and Muddy Rivers.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This is the only restaurant I ever had diner where it was not possible to change items from the menu. The reason the manager gave to us was that the chef didn't want to change things. I think this is not very customer friendly."

  • "Lineage is our favorite local restaurant. We would travel to it even if it weren't local."

  • "The moment you're greated at the door you feel so special and it continues through the most amazing meal!!!! See you in a few days! ;-)"

  • "Don't order the N.Y. strip steak. Worst piece of meat I've had in a long time--full of fat and gristle, very tough. The potato puree was a poor substitute for mashed potatoes or some other side--let's have some real food"
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Lineage is my favorite place for visitors, visiting family, and dates The oysters at the bar are wonderful. Amy, the bartenders, and waitstaff always make me feel at home. The lives p to its billing."

  • "We have eaten at Lineage several times and have always had a great experience. Last week we went there for my husband's birthday and splurged on the three course seafood tasting with the wine pairings. The food was amazing and wines were equally good. One of them was a light, refreshing white wine from Macedonia of all places.. Of course, you must save room for the incredible desserts, such as the brownie sundae with salted caramel sauce. Lineage is a bit pricey, but worth it if you want to go out for a nice dinner."

  • "Everything came together for us this evening. Service and ambience are consistently good. Had one of the best pieces of salmon ever: perfectly cooked! Really appreciate that portions are "people sized"! Also like the fact that I get to taste my "wine by the glass" before it is poured."

  • "We have gone to Lineage 6 or 7 times now, and find the frequently updated menu interesting, the food delicious, the service excellent, and the restaurant unpretentious. All that and easy street parking or T access, too! The Hake with tiny potatoes, mushrooms, and fava beans was amazing-- highly recommended. We came here for a late dinner on a weeknight after a rough, long day at work--such a treat."

  • "When we could';t get a reservation for supper Saturday we chose brunch the next morning. Arriving at 10:30 Sunday we wondered if we had made a mistake. Everything looked lovely and the wait staff was cheerful but no one else was there! AN hour later and the place was buzzing so the neighborhood sleeps late on weekends!!!Spicy lobster tacos, eggs Benedict with asparagus and house cured salmon over a grilled slice of challah and a lobster omelette made it clear that this spot is popular because its food is terrific. Grey walls, chic furniture, skilled wait staff and clearly a kitchen that knows its business. If in Brookline, try this!"

  • "I thought the service was painfully slow, and it was very noisy. If I go back, I would ask for the dining room. The food was good, but a bit pricey for what you get."

  • "It was great. I wouldn't put it in my top ten but would go back if I lived in Boston. The atmosphere was comfortable. Service great. Had the salmon which is usually my standard rating dish and it was meh. Good but not the best. My daughter had a baked rigatoni on the specials list which was nice. Overall a lovely experience."

  • "We loved the ricotta gnocchi, salmon, and steak! Great food, drinks, and service."

  • "We had had dinner here a few time before, so we tried a Sunday brunch. The menu was extremely limited, and when we asked the waitress to check if it was possible to have a simple dish of fish or chicken grilled she said flatly no without even attempt to check in the kitchen. The place was almost empty but nevertheless we waited 40' for a cold appetizer (fish mousse)."

  • "They hosted a large group for us and painlessly dealt with several changes in the size of the group, all at the last minute!"

  • "Wonderful warm place. Great values , that is working with quality local purveyors of fine produce. Not cheap but a good value. Two fish dishes very carefully cooked to specifications and presented in very interesting ways. I felt like I got what I paid for. Also the service was attentive without being intrusive. A great place for an intimate date or special location. There were lots of both going on around us."

  • "Looong wait for entrees: one was steak, the other the appetizer size fried clams. Hostess and waitress made a point of apologizing, and we ended up with no charge for dessert (which we appreciated).Trouble was, we waited so long for dessert, we almost left without having it!"

  • "Our only problem was a chilly draft when the heating system circulated the air. They did eventually move us to another table. Food was great, service appropriately attentive."

  • "I was with a friend and we ordered the lobster tacos which were outstanding! I could have eaten 10 of them! The French toast was not as eggy as I like it , but it was still good. We were the last ones in the restaurant and the servers were great. They never made us feel like we needed to leave. It was a cold day , and it was really cozy."

  • "Menu needs reviving - same old, same old. Restaurant still plagued by service hiccups (we dined on a Wednesday night) - the disappearing waitress, the entres that take far too long to arrive with no explanation (and the restaurant was not super busy). Are the chef and management in a rut, or do they just not care?"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Fantastic choice. Also the pasta/gnocchi dish is amazing every time."

  • "Lineage has consistently proven to be a great dining experience. Varied menus, great fresh seafood, excellently prepared meat dishes...everything imaginatively prepared with the freshest of ingredients make this venue well worth a visit. It's obvious that the kitchen at Lineage knows what they're doing! Imaginative chefs, a courteous bar and restaurant staff, delicious food in a great noise-free ambiance...what's not to like?"

  • "We are fortunate to live within walking distance of Lineage Restaurant. It is a 'special occasion' restaurant that is comfortable, welcoming, and fulfilling in every aspect, especially gastronomically. The cuisine is imaginative, but never just for the sake of novelty. We are always pleased when we can introduce friends to Lineage."

  • "Superb food and service. Each year I am in Boston for a week and make a point to each at least twice at LIneage. I always have seafood and it is always the the highest quality - fresh, cooked to the perfect temperature, and with thoughtful preparations that respect the fish. The quality and reasonable prices of the wine, and the wonderful fresh rolls are each an extra bonus. Attentive staff."

  • "We found this place while staying nearby. A very good restaurant. Great service. Food was excellent and the portions were big; left no room for dessert. We both had seafood. The price fixe menu looked like a real bargain, but we opted for ala carte. Still a good bargain. We were seated on the bar side. The noise was ok, probably much quieter on the other side. So I will skip my usual rant about places insisting on background music plus a TV. Not there to watch TV or listen to music, there to have dinner and conversation. At least it was music I liked. Noise is a minor quibble, and it was the bar side. Great food, great service, great value for the price. Opt for the quiet side."

  • "At last, a grownup restaurant - where you can actually have a wonderful conversation without screaming, leaning in over your food or feeling battered by the time you leave. It was great, totally civilized, relaxing, unhurried, great food, pleasing low keyed decor. Just the way an evening should be."

  • "What was known as a nice neighborhood restaurant with good food, has definitely seen better days. Their Sunday evening special, beef brisket, was so tough that the two people who ordered it, could not finish their dish. Restaurant tried to make up for mediocre service and food, by offering us free desserts. We took two, but left not feeling very good about the dining experience."
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "The ambiance is very nice, the service friendly and responsive, but the food was a disappointment. We each ordered the special, which was a brisket. While it was flavorful, it was impossibly tough and both of us felt it wasn't worth the struggle eating it, so informed our waitress. She immediately responded and we ordered new dishes. I had the salmon and my partner had mussels and linguini. Both of us commented almost simultaneously how salty our respective entrees were. Our opinion was again solicited by the waitress and maitre d. They were sincerely apologetic and adjusted the bill to make our dessert and coffee on them. With so many great restaurants in the Brookline area, Lineage will have to do much better to get us to go back."

  • "My husband and I came her for an anniversary dinner. The ambiance and service were great, but the food left something to be desired, for the price. Our appetizers were good, but a bit bland. Entrees were OK, his was too salty, mine was tiny. Dessert just wasn't my cup of tea - less the restaurant's fault than my own perhaps - I wanted something more substantial than a mousse or pudding. Drinks were both too limey. Overall, it was an OK dinner, but not one worth the over $100 price tag."

  • "Island Creek OB is one of my favorite places in Boston, so I was excited to try Lineage. It's very nice inside... and quiet, which allows for conversation (hard to find). The service was superb; everyone -- from the host to the server -- was exceptionally nice. The food was good but uneven. Our appetizers and oysters were great, but our salmon dish was mediocre. It was overcooked (I asked for med-rare, and they recommended medium, which doesn't have to be dry, but this was), and the red curry sauce -- which sounded like a nice complement to the fish, alas, was barely detectable. And it was served on black rice, which, again is interesting but it had absolutely no flavor at all. Dessert -- flourless chocolate cake -- was great."
